  • This lesson is about how to use the 한자 word 적, and how it can attach to the end of nouns to change their meaning. Specifically, 적 can transform a noun into an adverb, an adjective, and a descriptive verb. This will become 적으로, 적이다, and 적인.

Just realised how different pronounciation and meaning can differ between Korean and Chinese the pronounciation of 的 in Chinese is 'de' and is a possesive marker in Chinese.
Anyway A great lesson 빌리 선생님 😀😀 love your videos 😀😀

It might have evolved from how the character sounded to Koreans. I know in at least in the Changzhou dialect of Wu, 的 is pronounced something like tik meaning it keeps the glottal stop present in older forms of Chinese. So its actually really beneficial if you can speak other dialects of Chinese other than Mandarin.

Timing! In them last week or so I've been noticing 적 and beginning to get a feel that there was some consistent meaning to it, but to be honest think o was noticing the other 적...so this video has saved me from developing a misleading little theory in my head that would have lead to my disappointment. Coincidentally today is my birthday and my birthday gift to myself was TTMIK's Hanja guide ...which demonstrates how wonderfully timely this video is for me AND how very interested I am. Thanks so much for these windows into the language

Hi Billy! Is this the same phenomenon used in 개인적으로? 🧐

Hi, Jonathan! I will try to help answer. Yes, it is! 개인 is a Hanja word. The Hanja form of the word 개인적 is 個人的. You can see the third character looks similar as what Billy wrote in the video.

Korean Hanja and the way Hanja is used is shockingly similar to Japanese Kanji and the way Kanji is used. Now that I have learned Japanese, I feel it almost like committing a crime if I didn't go on learning Korean. The vocabulary is 'already there'. I simply need to go pick them up by converting my Kanji words into Hanja words!

Hello, Billy! Thanks for the great video!
I have a question? What's the difference in usage between -적으로 and -적이게? Aren't they both used as adverbs?
