I'd like to imagine a reality where the iPhone 9 met Windows 9 and they all lived happily ever after. ...But assuming this isn't the case, what's your personal theory? What happened to the iPhone 9, and why'd Apple decide to skip it? Very curious to hear opinions on this one!
I heard that Samsung went from S10 to S20 because it was 2020 and they wanted the releases to coincide with the year, ie 2020 =S20, 2021 =S21, 2022 =S22, etc.
Never really thought about it, as Apple simply wanted to make their fully redesigned iPhone on the 10th year anniversary have a milestone name, so iPhone X made way more sense than iPhone 9 or a third iPhone 8 (i.e 8s, 8 Pro, or similar). Makes enough sense to me. But if we were going to ask where the iPhone 9 went, I'd say the XR or the second iPhone SE fits the bill.
To me the XR is the true iPhone 9. It's a redesigned iPhone 8. Same build materials, but into the modern era. I would've loved if that was the iPhone 9 instead of the XR. That made no sense at all in terms of nomenclature.
Apple shouldn't skip numbers its dont make no sense why iphone se 1 and iphone se 2 including iphone se 3 have fake names apple should rename iphone se be call iphone mini 6 for iphone se 1 and mini iphone 8 for iphone se 2 including mini 7 iphone for iphone se 3 more processor chip power
The XR is the iPhone 9 in my book. Granted, we may never know the true reasoning behind the jump from the 8 to the X, but in this case I think we can assume (to a reasonable degree) that the XR was the iPhone 9.
There was rumors that the XR was originally called iPhone 9 but it was changed to XR last second right before it’s announcement. To be fair; it was probably a better idea.
I had the XR for five years i got it when it was first out and it was brilliant for me. Only upgarded to the iphone 15 last October. It does seem like a good middle ground between the 8 and the iphone X.
I'd say iPhone SE 2020 is the missing iPhone 9, and SE 2022 is the iPhone 10 (not X). It's weird but so is Apple naming convention, iPad 4 was high end in 2012, but 5 years later they released the iPad 5 which was the cheapest iPad. Same could be said about iPad Air 2 and Air 3, high end to mid range. Kinda similar to the iPhone situation in my books.
List of iPhones naming schemes in the SE lineup if a year later after the IPhone SE (1st gen) were the SE naming scheme are being scrap, and cancel. iPhone SE (1st gen), 2016, 1 model (SE (1st gen)). iPhone 9R, 2020, 3 Models (9R, 9R Pro, and 9R Pro Max). iPhone 9R-2, 2022, 4 Models (9R-2, 9R-2 Mini, 9R-2 Pro, and 9R-2 Pro Max). iPhone 9, 2024, 4 Models (9, 9 Plus, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro Max). iPhone 19, 2027, 4 Models (19, 19 Plus, 19 Pro, and 19 Pro Max). iPhone 20R, 2027, 4 Models (20R, 20R Plus, 20R Pro, and 20R Pro Max). iPhone 21R, 2028, 4 Models (21R, 21R Plus, 21R Pro, and 21R Pro Max). iPhone 22R, 2029, 4 Models (22R, 22R Plus, 22R Pro, and 22R Pro Max).
It’s pretty crazy just how little has changed over the years with the iPhone other than the camera in the last five years or so. Apple really should consider some sort of UI refresh after all of these years. They’re still going with the same parallax UI from iOS 7 at this point.
Or, the iPhone X was released in 2017 with only one size because they already had issues securing enough OLED Panels and Face ID sensors. It was a great way to start shipping a better iPhone despite these constraints.
Apple should’ve called the iPhone 8 the iPhone 7 S, because that is what it really was. The iPhone 8 didn’t add anything new externally except for a glass back that’s it.

The reason is simple. The number 9 is considered bad luck in Japan. It holds a superstition the way 9 is pronounced it shares “ku” and that’s can be associated with agony
We are only 3 years away from the iPhone 20 anniversary edition so there may not be an iPhone 19 , but it's actually crazy that we have had iPhones for nearly 20 years now. I thought it was great to get a special anniversary edition iPhone that was totally redesigned and was the blueprint for all there future phones, i got one as a secondary phone and it's still such a capable device that's quite fast and the battery lasts all day even though it's at 87% battery health, i love it's size too because it's slightly smaller than the plus/pro models so it's easier to hold in daily settings. I definitely think the Xr was the iPhone 9 and i think it should have been named that because a lot of the backlash it received was because it was in the X family name which was quite high end, I think that's why the SE models work so well because they are their own family line and people know they are not the high end models whereas the Xr made it seem like you couldn't afford the X/Xs models.
12:49 Also from Samsung on why the Note series went from 5 to 7 and skipping the 6, is so the Galaxy Note lineup won’t appear as a generation behind from the flagship Galaxy S series.
iPhone XS is so underrated. It has so many improvements over the X, it started the new era that’s until today, the iPhone X ended the 6s -X era. It’s so much better, you should definitely check better and even use them side by side.
I always thought they skipped the nine because the 10 was so advanced that they wanted people to know it was so advanced that it even leaked over number nine.
When the Model Number is matching the Year it is much more easier for anyone to understand, so 2020 Galaxy S20, 2021 Galaxy S21... - 2023 Galaxy S23 etc.
Samsungs s8 was a very cool phone and a big upgrade but iPhone X was the biggest advancement in iPhone ever and was truly different than everything else out at the time. There will never be anything that different and innovative ever again

I have seen online where the iPhone model numbers (15,14,13 etc) are meant to be pronounced in English everywhere and written in Arabic numbers. Its not iPhone quince but iPhone fifteen and so on. That meant that if Apple did an "iPhone nine", Germans would mistake it for "iPhone NO" and Apple didn't want to do that.
I often felt that Apple error in naming their iPhone device releases were fumbled between the years of 2011 through 2013 with the S’s & C’s. I always felt that the S models weren’t necessarily needed to name the same current model touting speed. In 2013 the iPhone 5 & the 5C, and 5S was totally not needed. Given that is my reasoning of why there was no iPhone 9 to rush the anniversary model X in 2017.
Hey thanks for the video. I'm enjoying your take a step back and look at tech videos. I'm not sure what else to call them but anyway they're really interesting
Does it all really matter? 2017 was a bloody long time ago. Nearly all original iPhone X purchasers from that time have moved on to newer models. Some did not make it through the pandemic.
the XR was a beast. my son had it for 5 years, only trading it in because it was $80 trade in plus a $320 promo, meaning if i didnt trade it up it wouldnt be worth anything at all. got him a 13 pro while the 14 was out so it was cheap and a good trade in value. XR screen was decent too.
I like how things turned out. X fits well as the 10 aniversary but because they released the Xs, now they will have to skip iphone 19 again because in 2027 iphone 19 is supposed to be iphone XX
Basically the 2018 iPhone lineup was also testing of names for models because the Xs and Xs Max are the pros of 2018 while the XR is the base of the 2018, the next year the iPhone 11 was the replacement for the XR being the base model and the 11 pro replacing the XS and the 11 Pro Max replacing the XS Max. I guess they just didn’t want to call them the pros yet or didn’t think of it that early.
I went from thinking it was some far fetched theory to being convinced by the end that you are right. Most likely the X would never have existed and instead of XS it would have been iPhone 9, 9 Pro and 9 Plus. But the form factor of 8 was so old at that point that they had to do release the X that year. And it seemed to have worked considering Android phones for years copied the notch. Unfortunately it’s unlikely Apple would ever say if you are right.
What flagship phones tried copying the notch? I mean, I guess budget Chinese phones, but I can't think of a phone from samsung, Google, oneplus, Sony, or any other major brand that decided to use the notch. It was very largely unpopular amongst android users and even many iphone users still wish their screen was uninterrupted. It kept me from iphone for a very long time. I still hate it, although I'm used to it.
I would only be ok with apple adding an option to turn off the grid layout. I prefer the grid layout and how the home screen works. It's one of the reasons I haven't jump to android (but is one reason I could ignore if apple continue to refuse changing the battery in my iPhone)
The iPhone X coming in only black and white could be a callback to the iPod classics(5th-7th gens) which only came in two colors (other than the occasional U2 color-ways)
Apple finally moved from macOS “X” to 11 and onwards beginning in 2020 - maybe because Microsoft was moving from Windows 10 to 11 then, too? Was it a marketing ploy? Was the release of the M1 chip finally enough to move macOS to version 11?
I've had this theory since I was about 9, but I think windows 8.1 was windows 9 in a way. Obviously it would have made more sense to either make a windows 9 or call windows 8.1 windows 9 but that windows 8.1 was technically the 9th windows since it was considered a major update. The iphone 9 makes less sense...
Basically samsung was making phones so fast that their number caught up to apples, so they skipped to 10. In response to that samsung skipped to 20 to be petty 😂
I like to think like in some weird way that the iPhone SE 3 is the spiritual iPhone 9. It has some significant improvements over the 8 like 5G and a faster chip. of course this wouldn't make sense because the iPhone 10 didn't have 5G and the iPhone 15 chip but I like to think that if the iPhone 9 did exist, it would look like the 3rd gen SE. I don't know, just an interesting thought (:
iPhone X should've been the iPhone 8: 10Yr Anniversary Edition for the new design. Then continue the new design for 9 and 10, design update for 11 and so forth.
The name R baffled everyone for months until someone who I don’t remember made the simple point that R comes before S in the alphabet. There’s nothing deeper about it, it’s just the iPhone before the XS
i would’ve believed the iPhone X is supposed to be the iPhone 9 because the specs had no significant improvement compared to its predecessor-iPhone 8 series. say the processor, the double stereo speaker. except the visuals, display, and the camera modules. and they had to name it iPhone X due to the anniversary thing, which idealistically the product should be aligned with the event. to which, this leads us to another theory what happened to the iPhone X then? well the iPhone XS and XS Max are supposed to be the OG ten series. you can tell by the specs were improved, but the visuals remain the same. and the fact that iPhone XS has bigger model but they named it Max instead of plus. so i would say they are iPhone X and iPhone X plus-as this would’ve been the last plus model. and what about the iPhone XR? well since the model came out along with the XS and XS Max but the spec is a bit lower than those two, i would say the R series would’ve been the next iPhone SE. why? the specs were downgraded/cut down a bit from the main line-ups, and it was released 2 years after the 1st gen. if we recognised the pattern of the SE, Apple always release the SE once per 2 years. say iPhone SE 2 and 3 that have been released in 2020 then 2022. but that was my only guessing, Guys. feel free to comment.
I also think the XR is actually the iPhone 9...maybe if apple didnt mess up their lineup release, they will announce the X according to their plans and at the end 8 series got abandoned too soon.
na i think they just wanted to do their big change on the 10th anniversary tbh and they held off with the max version just so in 2018 people had a reason to upgrade from their iphone x + samsung did not just want to have a higher number lmao... they just wanted to make the number match the year...so 2020 = s20, 2021 s21 etc...
Straightforward explanation, they dropped the iPhone 9 in the sewer and now only the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are enjoying the phone-Codrin Bradea Satana
I'm still a firm believer that the iPhone 8 was just the iPhone 10 in the better form factor. I'll only consider returning to Apple if they make an 5.5 inch SE Plus.
I'd like to imagine a reality where the iPhone 9 met Windows 9 and they all lived happily ever after.

12:46 not really, it's to keep their naming consistent with the release date. S20 in 2020, S21 in 2021 and so on :P
Samsung switched to match the calendar year.... S20 for 2020
Simple and highly effective naming... The current year is the current model.
You skipped iPhone 2 also
The iPhone X is still a beautiful phone surprisingly.
That’s just a theory,an iPhone 9 theory, thanks for watching
Apple said during 2016 that 2017 was gonna be something special so the X was definitely planned regardless if it was rushed or not.
I wanted it to be like with Megaman, having an iPhone 9 and an iPhone X2 the next year the iPhone X released
“An iPhone theory” I loved that reference 😂🎉
The name R baffled everyone for months until someone who I don’t remember made the simple point that R comes before S in the alphabet. There’s nothing deeper about it, it’s just the iPhone before the XS
And i saw this video 9 hours after release 😂 pure coincidence? I THINK NOT!
I never thought about it like this, but your theory makes complete sense.
i would’ve believed the iPhone X is supposed to be the iPhone 9 because the specs had no significant improvement compared to its predecessor-iPhone 8 series. say the processor, the double stereo speaker. except the visuals, display, and the camera modules. and they had to name it iPhone X due to the anniversary thing, which idealistically the product should be aligned with the event.
to which, this leads us to another theory what happened to the iPhone X then? well the iPhone XS and XS Max are supposed to be the OG ten series. you can tell by the specs were improved, but the visuals remain the same. and the fact that iPhone XS has bigger model but they named it Max instead of plus. so i would say they are iPhone X and iPhone X plus-as this would’ve been the last plus model.
and what about the iPhone XR? well since the model came out along with the XS and XS Max but the spec is a bit lower than those two, i would say the R series would’ve been the next iPhone SE. why? the specs were downgraded/cut down a bit from the main line-ups, and it was released 2 years after the 1st gen. if we recognised the pattern of the SE, Apple always release the SE once per 2 years. say iPhone SE 2 and 3 that have been released in 2020 then 2022.
but that was my only guessing, Guys. feel free to comment.
Always a big fan! 🎅🏻🧑🎄🤶
I also think the XR is actually the iPhone 9...maybe if apple didnt mess up their lineup release, they will announce the X according to their plans and at the end 8 series got abandoned too soon.
na i think they just wanted to do their big change on the 10th anniversary tbh and they held off with the max version just so in 2018 people had a reason to upgrade from their iphone x
+ samsung did not just want to have a higher number lmao... they just wanted to make the number match the year...so 2020 = s20, 2021 s21 etc...
Watching this video 9 months after it was posted.
iphone 9 is just the friends we made along the way
I assumed it was a similar reason that Windows went from 8 to 10. To avoid confusion on servers with Windows 95/98 which both start with 9.
The iPhone 9 is the friends you made along the way
Straightforward explanation, they dropped the iPhone 9 in the sewer and now only the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are enjoying the phone-Codrin Bradea Satana
Perfect channel to watch while eating.
I think Apple wanted to make the new iPhones since the X stand out from the "oldschool" iPhones before the X.
The iPhone Nine would have introduced the power button touch ID and ditch the home button and the Use Three was supposed to have the nine design
I'm still a firm believer that the iPhone 8 was just the iPhone 10 in the better form factor. I'll only consider returning to Apple if they make an 5.5 inch SE Plus.
Where's Windows 9? 9 is the cursed updated sequential naming convention.
