I think apple learned their lesson from the first port transition. As you mentioned, apple introduced lightning as an entirely new connector that no one had at the time. Their old accessories and chargers wouldn’t work. With usb-c, apple rolled that in with the MacBook Air (2015), which did not make up a major portion of their sales. Manufacturers started making usb c accessories and then the industry followed suit on phones/accessories. Now the pain point is that apple should have transitioned the iPhone port a few years ago, rather than users complaining that they didn’t have usbc cords to use with their phones. Fun fact: apple originally planned to have type c for the iPhone 5 and they supported development but because it took them too long to develop type c apple decided to make their own cable to meet the deadlines for iPhone 5 launch
Apple died when Steve jobs died. It was 1985 all over again for apple. Its just that everybody finally figured out that apple what's doing with the people wanted and people in Mass are usually behind the curve. I'm sure with the cash flow that Apple has it'll be a long time for them to bottom up this time but it is starting to fall apart and become unfocused like before. RIP Steve Jobs
USB-C is looking very promising for a universal data/charging platform. It can stream high resolution movies to a home theater, it can store massive amounts of data in a small thumb drive, it can power an entire extension hub with every port in use, and so on.
As an Apple user, I was thrilled about the USB Type-C when I upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro from an iPhone 11. Growing up, I faced so many issues with different ports. I owned a 2G, 3G, and a 4S, while my friends had newer models like the 5 and 6. My family wouldn't let me have a "good phone" in case it got stolen, which I understand. But it was frustrating needing to charge my phone and finding out nobody had the 40-pin connectors. When I got a phone with Lightning, nobody seemed to have one, except my friends who had already moved on to USB Type-C. I remember classes full of students arguing and trying to borrow a USB-C or a Lightning cable. Now that iPhones finally have USB Type-C, I'm excited, but then I realized I don't need to be. I'm not in school anymore; I don't have the constant struggle with friends over who has the right charger. Instead, I have my own charger that I always keep around my house.
Apple went from thinking about consumers to all the way to thinking out of the box to make money 💰 and harass thier own consumers.Shame on apple's thirst for making terrible solutions just for the sake of making extra money, and people saying lightning cable shouldn't have been removed u need to get some therapy.
This is in no way defending Apple, but the reason the 15 and 15 Plus have USB 2.0 because they used the A16 Bionic from last year which does not have the controller on the chip. This is why the 16 and 16 Plus will have it next year.
And thank god for that. I remember when my Samsung note 3 had a plastic back that allowed you to change your battery whenever you wanted; made it last for about 7 years. The only reason I upgraded was because my charging port finally died on it and I couldn’t get it fixed, so I was forced to upgrade to the Galaxy s20, which has the battery permanently installed inside the phone. I was so pissed off about that and still can’t get over it today
@@lacosta0892 You could have done wireless charging. I had a note 3 and Note 4. You just have to add the wireless receiver. That would have saved your charging port
@@thejpkotor I think most phones that are sealed are already to some level of water resistance. Even if they aren't water seal phone cases have been around for ages. Even phoes that had plastic removable backs had an IP rating. The plastic Galaxy s5 which was realeased in 2014 had an IP67 rating.
Was it the connector or the cable? If it was the cable it could be the silicone insulation on the cable that Apple uses and not the connector itself. USB cables usually are PVC which is quite durable.
My mom was actually very excited when I told my mom about the iphone 15 had usb c. Unfortunately she doesn't buy phones, she usually just get cheap phones from people who give them away when they upgrade, in fact, the newest phone she has ever had was the iphone x (before it was an old iphone, I'm pretty sure it was on ios 12). Personally I'm an android user, but the only phones I've had were the galaxy s7, and the pixel 6a. When I got my 6a, I had to get a churching block as well as an audio adapter because it was the first device that anyone in my family has had that requires a good cord, not a cheap usb c cord, although I have no idea if it was the block or the cord, because I could charge it with my portable battery with my cheap usb c cord, or with my computer.
iphone 15 and 15plus use the A16 chip... a chip made for iphone 14pro and pro max... phones wtih lighting ports... that chip doesn't have a USB 3.0 controller because it didn't need to have one
"Government regulation is a scary precedent", U will get a lot of hate for this but u are spot on. Obviously Im happy that apple is finally switching, but it's clear all the people who blindly support the EU laws know very little about how technology is actually made. It would be great if u could make a video on this, although as I said before, u will get a lot of hate for this because the internet blindly supports it (Just look at how much criticism MKBHD got for being slightly skeptical about the law)
19:37 I feel like I was the only one who thought exactly the same... Literally can't find anyone else on RUclips either who talks about this. Sometimes I feel like if Apple just removed the charging brick and added a Lightning to USB-C cable without the whole story about it being for the sake of e-waste it would have been more acceptable. Their story about e-waste can thrown completely out the window when new users to the iPhone has buy a charging brick with a USB-C port on the side actually contributing to more e-waste. It was not only an anti-consumer move it was an anti e-waste move, but they pledged to their story about it being for the sake of the environment, which is disgusting.
The difference between now and then. Then, Apple didn't ship junk to the customers. Now, Apple don't ship junk to investors, and don't consider their customers to be smart and nerdy any longer, but as a flock in dire need of a status symbol and an expensive piece of gear to show off. Apple users don't use phone cases for this reason. The case cover the trio of lenses whose design was inspired from Gillette razors "The best for a men". If you think USB-C Gen 2x1 of the iPhone 15 is fast at 20 Gbps, check the Sony Xperia 1 that this year is fully compatible with Thunderbolt and transfers data at 40 Gbps. Thank you for your rant, I'm not an Apple customer, I don't like their walled garden concept. Greetings, Anthony
But on the plus side to this is that the iPhone 15 users will now have a much more easier way of getting Type-C cables. Due to the fact that type-C has been around for at least 6 years now and Android phones are one of the leading devices to use them. So now when you go over to the charging cable section at your local supermarket you don't need to really look hard enough to find the right cable. Even then you might already have some lying around the house since you already have some other USB-C devices. At this point USB-C is now really becoming the default standard and is also slowly replacing the oldest Type-A.
Technically we can't say that the iPhone charging plug was around in 2003 because the IPhone wasn't released until 2007. However, a better title for the video might be "The History of the Apple charging port/cable". The reason I say this is because the cover graphic is sort of "wrong" in that the iPHone did not exist in 2003.
I think it’s a combination of your voice, tone, inflection, well researched videos and text that make me love your long form videos. Please keep them coming!!
i thought that apple would only have all new european iphones have usb-c and everyone else would keep the lightning port because apple has always been an anti-consumer company
I’ve been waiting to upgrade. There’s been features that I’ve wanted but I told myself I’m waiting until iPhone get USB-C now I can keep the iPhone 15 for years to come. I can’t wait for it to arrive.
the iPhone 15 model only supporting USB2 speeds was a surprise to no one... not sure why you think it is so stupid. we all knew that device would ship with the A16 bionic from the previous year's iPhone 14 pro. which had a USB2.0 controller. they weren't going to redesign the A16 bionic with a new usb controller. so Apple could have only introduce USB-C on the iPhone 15 pro, or... they could release iPhone 15 with USB power delivery, and USB2.0 speeds. I think they made the right choice. and as a iPhone user that hasn't used a cable for anything but charging since iPhone 5S, I don't care what the transfer speeds are anyway. This is a non-issue for just about everyone.
The iPad 3 was the very first iPad I bought. 5 years later got the iPad Pro 9.7 inch. 5 years later again, got the iPad 9th gen and that’s where I am today! Love what I have right now until I’m ready for another one!
I've had to replace my iPad 5 times because using non-Apple USB-C to-USB C cables cauaes the device firmware to recognize non-Apple cables and then, over time, the device stops charging.
For the people who complain about Apple "changing the connector again" so are you saying nothing should ever change? What is an acceptable time frame for a company to change things up? If Apple did not have to change to USB C should they keep the lightning port until 2050?
I don't think really anyone is complaining lol. He mentioned that in his vids, but I am in a ton of Apple forums and I haven't seen anyone mention "change again". Some are bummed that their invested cables are essentially obsolete after upgrade, but the vast majority understand change is inevitable.
Yeah except a separate charging brick comes in its own packaging making it even more wasteful packaging than before I think the best way to balance everything out is to just throw rocks through Apple store windows in the middle of the night until the costs of replacing broken glass equals out with the costs of missing charging blocks At least broken glass really is recyclable
This video completely skips Apple’s own hand in supporting the development of USB-C and marketing it. They were among the first to push it aggressively with their 2015 Macbook. They are also a part of the group of companies that collaborated to develop it.
iPhone 5 was my first iPhone. I was always a blackberry before. Since sept 2012 I have gotten the newest iPhone on launch day. What a ride it’s been with iPhone
I still have a FireWire Dock Connector from the iPod Mini my parents bought the year I was born (04). Haven’t used it, because that mini died when I was like 3, but the USB dock connector is still in my life for my older nostalgia devices. I remember the lightning switch, and finally getting a lightning enabled iPad, it really was cool for some reason.
“Or at least they care about making their public image look good.” Exactly. Just bought the 15 Pro btw. ;) But most people by far use Android. And I did consider it, moreso than before. I have a MacBook so iPhone makes sense. But I 100% agree that Apple isn’t the innovator they once were.
Its because of the EU forcing them to do so and they still fucked it up making you pay for the most expensive model if you want usb 3.0 which still isn't the fastest. They would not have changed the lightning port if they were not forced to do so.
The iPhone 15 has absolutely infuriated me because Apple has milked the lightning port for far too long and now it’s gone too far and now they segregated the iPhone from one another even more by having the 5 times telephoto to the promax and *only* the pro max. There’s no reason for them to do this other than to push the more expensive phone on the consumer.

So basically The EU forced Apple to switch to USB-C and people don’t like it
Remember Apple was part of the team that designed USB C
You would've thought when they switched all of their laptops and iPads to USB-C that they would be desperate to put it on the iPhone
When did he die
USB-C is looking very promising for a universal data/charging platform. It can stream high resolution movies to a home theater, it can store massive amounts of data in a small thumb drive, it can power an entire extension hub with every port in use, and so on.
USB-C in my opinion is a poor choice to be the unverisal port on technology devices
@@imguestie Why?
I’ll never forget the iPad 3rd gen to 4th gen update. I had JUST bought a 3rd gen literally 3 weeks before they announced the 4.
I. Was. Pissed.
R. I. P.
RIP, literally the worst timing possible
I just hope that the EU forces Apple to start including the charging bricks in the next iPhone models.
Lightning was wayyyyyyyy better than usb micro
And to be honest it's not much worse than usb C,,,,.
Physically, it’s better than USB c but the fact that usbc is universal makes it the right choice
My s23 Ultra is laughing at this... 😂😂😂
Thank the tech gods, I would never see the day but USB-C iPhone !!!!!! Thanks to EU 😁
Now I'm gonna use my Xiaomi charger into an apple phone now (joke)
Apple went from thinking about consumers to all the way to thinking out of the box to make money 💰 and harass thier own consumers.Shame on apple's thirst for making terrible solutions just for the sake of making extra money, and people saying lightning cable shouldn't have been removed u need to get some therapy.
This is in no way defending Apple, but the reason the 15 and 15 Plus have USB 2.0 because they used the A16 Bionic from last year which does not have the controller on the chip. This is why the 16 and 16 Plus will have it next year.
What’s wrong with defending Apple? It’s ok, you’re allowed to.
In the future they’ll remove Bluetooth and come up with a new wireless solution in order to play hi res lossless audio.
As others have said - it’s cuz of the EU. And in a couple years, they will have replaceable batteries because of the EU.
I like my stuff to be waterproof. I don’t really care about anything else.
When the EU says that USB-C has to be the charging port of devices, then all companies operating inside the EU Single Market have to abide by that
I hate how many lightning cables slowly fail over time, whereas I've never had a microUSB or USB-C fail. Lightning just sucked.
Lightning 4-7 year
Was it the connector or the cable? If it was the cable it could be the silicone insulation on the cable that Apple uses and not the connector itself. USB cables usually are PVC which is quite durable.
Yep. I miss Steve jobs. iPhone would be better today then what it is now
Same I miss Steve Jobs apple has been ruined with Tim Cook
My mom was actually very excited when I told my mom about the iphone 15 had usb c. Unfortunately she doesn't buy phones, she usually just get cheap phones from people who give them away when they upgrade, in fact, the newest phone she has ever had was the iphone x (before it was an old iphone, I'm pretty sure it was on ios 12).
Personally I'm an android user, but the only phones I've had were the galaxy s7, and the pixel 6a. When I got my 6a, I had to get a churching block as well as an audio adapter because it was the first device that anyone in my family has had that requires a good cord, not a cheap usb c cord, although I have no idea if it was the block or the cord, because I could charge it with my portable battery with my cheap usb c cord, or with my computer.
iphone 15 and 15plus use the A16 chip... a chip made for iphone 14pro and pro max... phones wtih lighting ports... that chip doesn't have a USB 3.0 controller because it didn't need to have one
cool video bro lol
thanks bro lol
ok lol
These are the type of videos I want to see, so little of people will call Apple out on there BS!
Lightning was the best in my opinion
"Government regulation is a scary precedent", U will get a lot of hate for this but u are spot on. Obviously Im happy that apple is finally switching, but it's clear all the people who blindly support the EU laws know very little about how technology is actually made. It would be great if u could make a video on this, although as I said before, u will get a lot of hate for this because the internet blindly supports it (Just look at how much criticism MKBHD got for being slightly skeptical about the law)
Thank you EU regulators, lightning need too die. 🗑️ i give Apple zero credit for charging it.
Greetings,
Anthony
Summary for the people who don't want to spend 28 minutes on the video:
- The European Union forced Apple.
The end.
30 pin is actually faster then lightning, if it’s used over fire wire
But on the plus side to this is that the iPhone 15 users will now have a much more easier way of getting Type-C cables. Due to the fact that type-C has been around for at least 6 years now and Android phones are one of the leading devices to use them. So now when you go over to the charging cable section at your local supermarket you don't need to really look hard enough to find the right cable. Even then you might already have some lying around the house since you already have some other USB-C devices. At this point USB-C is now really becoming the default standard and is also slowly replacing the oldest Type-A.
The Lightning is More better I’m not switching The iPhones this why old iPhone are better :(
We all know why it was changed 🇪🇺
"Why Apple Changed the iPhone Charging Port" dude we know why you didnt have to make this video
I dont like Apple but the Lightning port is better. Ive had so many Tyoe c ports break and not even once a Lightning port.
Watching this while setting up my New iphone 15 Pro max. Well done!
Man… maybe I’m just early but your videos haven’t been getting the kind of views they deserve recently
Why does the Thumbnail on the left say 2003 when the iPhone Released in 2007?
It’s because of the EU and it’s new laws/policies. Saved you 20 minutes of your life
The iPad 3 was the very first iPad I bought.
Maybe that is question you should ask “Chy-na.”
i can charge any gadget that has usb c nice 🎉
Yo wasn’t it because the EU forced them to?
2015: Apple makes a laptop with only two ports: usb c and headphone jack. 2023: Europe forces them to have usb c iPhones. They played themselves.
Short answer - EU
Long answer - This video
For the people who complain about Apple "changing the connector again" so are you saying nothing should ever change? What is an acceptable time frame for a company to change things up? If Apple did not have to change to USB C should they keep the lightning port until 2050?
dont care abt this change tbh, will probably be using this iphone 5 until 2030
@@georgewashington6171iPhone 5 cant use RUclips app
I don't think really anyone is complaining lol. He mentioned that in his vids, but I am in a ton of Apple forums and I haven't seen anyone mention "change again". Some are bummed that their invested cables are essentially obsolete after upgrade, but the vast majority understand change is inevitable.
I like lightning and I prefer android and type c for more availability to devices but lightning to me seems durable.
@@robmalcolm8042 Yep. It is difficult to argue against that fact. Lightning is indeed more durable than USB-c and is a better port design wise.
First
Apple:THE EU FORCED US TO MAKE A USB-C CARGER FOR THE IPHONE 15 AND IPAD PRO
Yeah except a separate charging brick comes in its own packaging making it even more wasteful packaging than before
I think the best way to balance everything out is to just throw rocks through Apple store windows in the middle of the night until the costs of replacing broken glass equals out with the costs of missing charging blocks
At least broken glass really is recyclable
This video completely skips Apple’s own hand in supporting the development of USB-C and marketing it. They were among the first to push it aggressively with their 2015 Macbook. They are also a part of the group of companies that collaborated to develop it.
Great video! Love these types of videos, and music as always slaps!
@91Tech, how old were you in 2003? Just wondering lol
They could've just made the European model with USB-C and the American and Asian models with lightning port.
iPhone 5 was my first iPhone.
The big difference this time is that a ton of people already have usb c cords. No one had any lightning cords for other devices.
Lightening cables are really weak in my opinion. My wife managed to break the end of her cable off in the port on her iPad not just once...but twice.
Only og people that can like remember when the iPad and iPhone had the app videos
👇
“Or at least they care about making their public image look good.”
Exactly.
Just bought the 15 Pro btw. ;)
But most people by far use Android. And I did consider it, moreso than before. I have a MacBook so iPhone makes sense. But I 100% agree that Apple isn’t the innovator they once were.
Does anyone know remember how hard the 30 pin connector was to clean? My charger would never fully go in
Its because of the EU forcing them to do so and they still fucked it up making you pay for the most expensive model if you want usb 3.0 which still isn't the fastest. They would not have changed the lightning port if they were not forced to do so.
I still have a 30-pin cable and an iPod it connects to. Also, Apple still lets me use both with iTunes
“I’m the eu lol, I make rules”
my 2018 car is equiped with USB ports still gona need lightning to usb for years to come or usb c to a
Yeah usb c to usb a cables are very common and not so expensive
USB C eventually will replace USB A completely......
.it also will replace HDMi eventually also .it is superior to HDMi is Every way ......
USB A shouldn't be a thing besides compatibility. Companies that ship with a brick should just switch to USB C chargers.
@@claudiobizama5603 I think it's mostly still around because of the legacy international markets
@@claudiobizama5603 I think he is referring to and old car. My 2020 Mazda cx-3 still has usb a ports and I’m not planing on upgrading just because usb c ports on the car
Because EU forced them
The #1 advantage of lightning ports is that you can clean them so easily. That’s why I don’t like USB C. It’s like the 30 Pin Connector hard to clean.
Liked and commented to maybe help the RUclips algorithm a bit more. Nice video and some good points about Apple!
Because money and eventually they looked out of date with lighting
