They put it on their macs before windows OEMs did too, which makes it stranger. I dunno, they must have over over over spent on RND for it, i don't see why they didn't change from lightning to USB C like 5 years ago.
Apple said Lightning will be the port for the next decade. That's why they kept it for exactly one decade. When Apple does stuff, people get extremely annoyed. Every time and no matter what. That's why Apple is playing really really safe here and that's why they kept it so long and not changed it after only 5-6 years.
@@Raja995mh33 They put USBC on their other products years ago, including mobile devices like iPad. There was no reason to keep lightning on phones for this long other than to charge for cables.

The $1000 phones problem is kinda like suddenly everyone is using a Ferrari as a daily driver. This new incredible chip will be 90% used to doom scroll pictures of friends and family
That's something that I can't wrap my mind around. Most people just use phones for scrolling social media, yet they are more than willing to shell out four figures for a device to do that on. I get most people aren't tech savvy, but when a $300 Chomebook can perform that same task, but with a much larger screen and probably better battery life, you'd think people would smarten up to buying flagship phones all the time.
Yeah, $500 is too much for a phone for me, even though it's something I use daily. As someone who doesn't game or hardly takes pictures on my phone, none of this new stuff matters to me.
It's funny how lightning began life as being one of the great advantages of being in the apple wall garden and proving competition is good for the space (forcing the adoption of usb c over micro b) You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain
@@commonname571more accurately the only advantage USB-C has over lightning is the extra conductors (and it being open to anybody), but my point was lightning was both an improvement over apples own 30 pin and USB micro b and at it’s introduction it was by far the best SFF connector on the market
The thing with phones rising in pricing significantly is, I no longer feel the need to get a new phone every other year. I held on to my Galaxy S9+ for 4 years, and I plan to do the same for my S22+
Same! I write this to you now on my S9! The only reason I'm going to replace it is I cracked the screen back in August. I'm just waiting for the new models to launch
I'm using iPhone 13 Pro Max from 2021 and probably gonna use it for 4 more years or until they stop giving software updates. Gonna get my battery replaced next year though as it's health is deteriorating.
I kept my pixel 3 for 4.5 years before moving to the pixel 7. I plan on using that one for the same length of time, so I am on the 4-year upgrade cycle right now as well.
Can't wait for the aftermath of the "new port" on third party Type-C cables with putting USB 3.0 behind Pro/Max only - Thunderbolt's initial introduction & USB's "SuperSpeed" existential crisis name changes weren't confusing enough for consumers it seems. Maybe this will be a good reason to revisit the cable tester with MFI Type-C cables?
As a cable fabricator, there is a lot of specifications that goes into the cables. They are not the same. By companies not supplying power that's tested with product, they open "the box".
I'm fine with lighting, I was for usb c though but the problems out came the convince. I had S21+ for a year and that connector got flakey enough to the point where even a wind could interrupt the connection. No matter how expensive the cable was. And who does file transfers via USB anyways? 😅
Well, sadly most phone review channels are just shills repeating some quick talking points. Even MKBHD, whom I mostly respect, is absolutely biased when talking about Apple products.
Tbh I’m yet to find a phone review channel that actually, you know, does a proper review. Phone review channels are a very low bar as far as quality goes.
I am honestly surprised they didn’t pull one of their famous « I shall avoid that new European policy at all cost » by simply removing the charging port. the double tap finger gesture for the apple watch isn't new. I haven't watched the keynote so idk if they actually advertised it as "new" but I've been using it for 2+ years already. It's an adaptive gesture so its function is contextual. I mostly use mine to pause/play media, it's SO freaking useful. A couple weeks ago I was doing house work (painting mostly) and had dirty hands or was wearing dirty/wet gloves. I had my iPhone playing through a bluetooth speaker and anytime i needed to pause, just double tap my finger to my thumb and boom, music paused without touching a single device with my grubby mitts! It's freaking awesome. And there are way more gestures too with clenching your fist/tapping fingers but I only use the simple double tap otherwise it gets a bit overcomplicated and less useful But yeah sick feature (but not new lol)
if i understand correctly the gesture now works in standby and the user interface looks more nice.. thats the „new“ thing. all the old watches dont get the new interface and it only works turnt on. The functions seems to be the same between both versions
Probably a non pro chip. I think by doing so it creates a bigger feeling of innovation and progress when the base model inherits some of the pro features
I'm a cyclist and the Apple Watch seemed pretty cool but 1. I don't have an iPhone 2. Garmin watches cost less or the same and for the niche that I'd use it for, they have basically all the features... but as a standalone device The gesture thing would be a great feature though to not have to let go of the handlebars
i guess the watch is "feeling" the muscle movement under the skin, and when you are grabbing the handle bars, maybe this could falsely trigger the gesture
My guess was actually the opposite, that you don't accidentally trigger it while grabbing the handlebars but instead don't even have to let go of the handle bars to trigger it intentionally. Guess someone needs to test it. Also now that you say it, you might actually accidentally trigger the action when switching gears or braking. Btw pretty sure the apple watch, like many other smart watches and heartbeat sensors uses light to shine through the arm and look at movements in veins and muscles, they probably use that for the gestures aswell.@@0q2628

Plus people need to stop complaining about charging speed and learn to keep their phones at a good state of charge. Besides, fast charging harms the battery in the long run. Even the measly 20w or so charging apple allows now drains peoples battery health to 90% or so after a year of use (see a lot of 14 pro max’s around 90% health while mine is at 100%). I go out of my way to only use 5W charging for my 14 pro max, and have never found myself running out of battery. I typically use a USB port on my PC which can only output 5W max, or the USB port in my car which is also 5W. A old 5W wall wort would work too tho if you have one. Charges plenty fast imo and I also always keep my battery between 20 and 85%
@@pcmasterracetechgod5660 im so glad someone says this about batteries. I have a program that keeps my m2 air battery at 80% charge when plugged in. Also my 14 pro max is at 97% health and i use wireless charging 95% of the time. I charge every other day or when my battery is 50-65% charge
It's always weird to me when people complain about micro USB being fragile. @@fghsghpeople just like to bitch and moan about connectors they don’t like. I didn’t mind my Lightning cables. They were an improvement over the 30-pin Dock cable and the 30+ phone chargers around at the time of the iPhone’s release. Like you with your USB Type B micro cables, I’ve had my Lightning cables for years, likely since the iPhone 5 days. I’ve lost track to be honest. They’re dirty, some are slightly cracked yet functional, but they all work perfectly. Am I happy that we’re getting USB Type C on the iPhone? Absolutely. When I upgrade two or three years from now, I’ll be able to use my laptop charger - and my other 12 Type C cables - to charge my iPhone. I’ll still carry an extra cable when traveling. I don’t want to wait to charge my iPhone and iPad.
I haven't used a cable for data since ios got over the air os updates and added backups to iCloud. This is probably true for most users, especially the non-pro/max/ultra (whatever suffix they are calling it) model ones. Lightning was basically a precursor to the USB-C design. It was amazing compared to its contemporary, mirco-usb. Lightling lasted about the same length of time that the 30-pin dock connector did, they were due for a change. I still say the USBC cable ecosystem is a mess. They never adopted clear labeling or color coding of what a given cable's capabilities are. 480/5/10/20/40 Mbps, 4/8k dp, 30/60/100/240W power. And the more capable cables linked thunderbolt have very chunky connectors that are awkward sticking out from a phone by up to an inch. I just wish the USB-C cable people would actually use the standardized logos on their cables, but almost no one does.
6:13 "Supporting older devices." I have been using the iPhone XS this last week (running IOS 17 beta) and other than the battery life and aging cameras I'm perfectly happy with the speed and especially the size of the phone. I'm genuinely considering buying the 13 Mini and rocking that for a year or two. Edit: this phone is FIVE generations old this year
Even after a year I'm still excited about my 13 Mini. I bought when it was no longer just a rumor there will be no Mini any more, so why wait? The phone isn't getting any younger, although I switched from the original SE, so I was due for an upgrade for quite some time :-) I hope to have it also for like 5-6 years.
I bought my daughter a 13 mini when it was new. I wouldn't recommend it. The battery life is really bad. It's better than the 12 mini, but still really bad. I regret getting that one instead of the regular 13.
Have been on my XS since it dropped and besides the battery lacking, I have absolutely no reason to upgrade. Speed, cameras, display, everything is satisfactory.
I wish I could be excited about the CPU / GPU performance - but unless they’ve done something to improve heat dissipation I fear it’ll only last a few minutes. I hope I’m wrong. Would be really cool to have LTT do some phone gaming tests with a long duration to measure throttling. I’d be curious to see if apples newer chips last longer not because they have better heat dissipation, but because they have more overhead and can run more efficiently.
The phone is made of titanium, and their copper heat syncs they did like a metal fusion method to fuse them to the chassis. So, in THEROY it actually should work pretty well.
The 14 pro max charges at 27W, I’m sure the bigger 15 also charges at more than 20W. It’s annoying because apple doesn’t officially list charging speeds
I also thought this, so many channels just report on the 20W number but I have a Anker powerbank which shows the output and my 14 Pro Max also reaches around 27W.
I was thinking that with all these gaming handheld, Apple arguably has the best option for a handheld chip but practically 0 chance of it becoming a thing.
Sadly true tbh. They already have native support for PS and Xbox controllers, they just don't have the games or userbase for it. However, if they ever actually properly invested in it, I could see an 11" iPad Pro with an M* processor being an absolutely unbeatable portable gaming device. I'm tentatively hopeful that something will change though as this is the second year in a row they've focused on the gaming aspects of their various devices. If they do end up purchasing Disney, I wonder if they'd consider entering the gaming market with their own IPs..?
Gaming could be such a great showcase of the power of those tiny little chips. It's nice to see Apple finally see that as well and put some effort into it. I mean, if they actually manage to deliver and RE4 Remake looks and plays nicely on a phone then they'll make one hell of a statement.

What I'm interested in is the spatial video recording. I'm sure most people don't care about 3D but if it works well enough and doesn't degrade the quality of the video I'm all about it.
You can, but it might charge a bit slower. Every cable should be able to do up to 30W. iPhones can't do that anyway, but for even faster charging you need special cables and bricks
I thought it was ridiculous when Apple highlighted the usb 3.0 controller on the chip (which is a kind of awesome chip in terms of the gpu). But, now thinking about it, there likely wasn’t a 3.0 controller on the chip from the pro model last year that is going in the base iphone 15. I wonder if they will bump the base to 3.0 and the pro to thunderbolt next to around.
If they keep the same trend of the non-pro models getting last year's pro chip, then the iPhone 16/Plus should get get A17 Pro with the USB 3 controller. Hopefully they bump the pro models to Thunderbolt at that point.
I suspect they'll bump the features up when they want to make it seem like they did something amazing which is how the average Apple customer will view it. They always think Apple invented a new thing :)
Just wait on USB5 or USB4.0x2.1+UltraGigaSpeed_40gbps lameusbforumnamingscheme, then maybe Apple will force the base model Iphone 16 for USB-C support superspeed, and hoping a desktop mode features on ios when plugin to monitor or a dock.
It's also kind of stupid how the latest iPhone won't support the same speed as your latest MacBook but limit transfer speed instead. The USB2 in the iPhone 15 is completely embarrassing in comparison to any other smartphone with USB-C. But the point that even the iPhone 15 Pro Max will limit transfer to or from your MacBook doesn't make any sense. I think the regular iPhone should have gotten USB3 and the Pro models should have gotten USB4.
@@TheJackiMonster USB 3 can be 5, 10 or 20 gbps and USB 4 is 40 or 80 gbps. So there's lots of room for them to move. Honestly 80gbps is probably pushing it, and not really worth worrying about too much. There is an issue with the cables themselves. They get pricey if you want the highest power + highest data + length from USB 3/4 and they get thicker. A three meter cable is great if you're in bed and want to be charged, but you wouldn't want it for transferring data at your desk obviously. I think they'll weaponise it though and use it to push adoption of the next gen Mac laptops and desktops/M3 chips along with iPads and iPhones of course. What makes practical sense on your phone to get all your video/photos off after a holiday so you can do the modern equivalent of making your family look at a photo album is another matter. Anyone used to Lightning is going to be blown away by the Pro Max though. Same with charging speed potential.
USB c is great for when I eventually upgrade, but my 14 pro max has been sitting on a magnetic charger as needed. So beyond that the upgrade is underwhelming.

And this is why I wanted the EU to revise their law to require a complete implementation of USB-C, with USB 3 and Alt modes enabled, and also force mobile gadgets with internal storage to adhere to the MTP protocol for file transfers to internal storage. Windows users still need iTunes to interface with Apple hardware, which is cumbersome and non-portable, and transfer speeds from the PC are still soo early 2000s. I don't care how much you wanna sell your cloud solutions and sell your users' data, Not to mention no support for output to external displays using the standard adapters. It's neat for iPhone users to be able to charge with any charger and cable, but that's about it. Totally half-assed. This is a sin committed by various Android smartphone makers, too. I think lightning disappearing will also lead to less confusion in USB-C… eventually. Why do you guys always talk about Apple when a lot of phones are near or over a thousand dollars now. Samsung costs more than Apple, the ultra starts at $1200 and goes up to $1620 which is $20 dollars more than apple's maxed out iphone pro, and the Zfold starts at $1600 and goes over $2100 dollars. Also, it doesn't matter which side you're on, if you're consistently upgrading your phone through trade ups then you can save up to 800 dollars.
There’s no other phone with speed and ray-tracing features comparable to the iPhone 15 Pro, at any price. Don’t confuse price with value. It’s normal for any top dog product to cost more. Nobody’s forcing you to buy this if you don’t like the price, plenty of cheaper phones on the market
@@lauraprates8764 that’s your opinion. Plenty of organisations out there will make use of these features for apps and use cases we can’t even imagine yet. If everyone had your attitude, we’d still be using bricks with buttons and 30 minute battery life.

Now it would be nice if Apple could make it so you can download an entire folder from ICloud Drive. They've never done this, so I use One Drive from M$ to upload my pictures from my phone and download them to my computer. Plus Apple has that weird HEIC format for pictures. The only thing I liked about lightning connector was its strength. My Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G USB-C connector is a little weak causing charging and data transfers to be a little problematic for charging and external storage transfers.
For context, my Note 10 had it's port chewed out by other brands of cables and the insignia brand can loosely hold the phone by it's port. My Note 20 can be hung of the insignia cable and fished out of a couch with that brand, and it has done so consistently for 2 years.
I've had my iphone xs for 4 years, and it still feels snappy as ever. The only thing holding me back at this point is storage. I had my iphone 6s for 4 years before that, and my 4s for 4 years before that. I guess my upgrade period is every 4 years.
my brothers old air 2 still gets updates. except it was a 16gb model and he could not update because of the storage. But huge props to apple for updating it for 8+ years
@@paulotremba4688you are exactly in the 50% percentile. There are 1 billion iPhone users and apple sells 250 million iPhones annually. That means on average, every iPhone user upgrades once in 4 years
5-6 years is certainly possible with a mid to high spec phone and a battery replacement around the 3 year mark. In the UK 5G still has quite limited coverage but might be worth a handset upgrade in the future.
If you read the fine print, 15 pro only included a charging cable out of the box. Possible it supports 10Gbps but you need additional cable. In the ad that Apple shows recording externally ProRes for a soccer game, the cable has a huge ⚡️ logo on it. Cook is still cook.

Good news that Lightning is finally (!) moving out! My main gripe about that is the fact that the conductors are exposed on the plug - I had a cable short out on something in my car 'between seats heap'; it melted the end of the cable and took out the charger plugged into the lighter socket... Never trusted them since that.
I'm 100% sure Apple kneecapped the USB port on the normal iPhone 15 with 2.0 speeds, it doesn't make senese for the A16 to only support USB 2.0 when the A14 supported 3.0 on the 4th gen iPad Air
Apples chips are always designed for EXACTLY what they need. And they didn't need USB3.0 support on the 14 Pro and that's why the 15 doesn't have it... Next year they will support 3.0 because then Apple will most likely update the 16 and 16 Plus to the A17. The USB3 support on the iPad Air 4 can have a lot of reasons, first one being that there is much more room to work with in the iPad so they could easily include a dedicated, extra chip outside the SoC to do this. On the iPhone it's not so easy to just include another extra chip there (which is also the reason why the Pro still maxes out at 1TB - there is no space for a second storage chip and there are no 2TB chips yet).
You mentioned something about them letting you know when they work on repairability instead of a skit. They actually did in the keynote although not a huge difference, but a step in the right direction. Surprised you didn't mention it.
Its refreshing to see Linus being stoked for an Apple product :D great video!! Would love to see a comparison video between iphone 15 vs iphone 14 pro, maybe in the macaddress
+1 for apples support of older devices. Until I massively battered my phone dropping it then running it over then smashing it in a heavy car door (long story) my iphone 8 lasted me 5 years without feeling any slower than the day I got it, that couldn't be said about my friends similarly Samsung he lent me until I replaced it with an iPhone 14pro max

Although even if apple makes it possible those meager 6 gb of ram will never be enough for anything. Not that 12 would be either so android isn't much better though
Might've been worth mentioning the the USB C cables included with the pro models only support USB 2 transfer speeds so you'll have to buy another cable to fully utilise the 10Gbps that the phones support
@@Gurenn83 Shit Standard stays shit standard too - really hope there will be a standard in the future where we doesn't need to get a bachelor degree in USB-C to but a cable

Doomscrolling? Are you about to go on a murder spree or something?

the double tap finger gesture for the apple watch isn't new. And there are way more gestures too with clenching your fist/tapping fingers but I only use the simple double tap otherwise it gets a bit overcomplicated and less useful
But yeah sick feature (but not new lol)
if i understand correctly the gesture now works in standby and the user interface looks more nice.. thats the „new“ thing. all the old watches dont get the new interface and it only works turnt on. The functions seems to be the same between both versions

You are worried about battery life on the iPhone xs but you wanna upgrade to a mini ? 😮
I upgraded my iPhone X to the 14 Pro last year. It’s amazing how well older iPhone perform.

That still seems plenty fast, there's diminishing returns pushing these crazy charge rates. Better for the lifespan of the battery too

One time he let his phone die when we were over there and I had a car emergency on the way home (he was coming back later). They thought that micro USB was the same as USB C and were so insistent that they had a cable. They did not. They also recently installed an outlet with USB A ports and tell me that they have it when I plug in my USB C brick to charge things. I took a USB A to USB C cable and left it there, for future use. Good news that Lightning is finally (!) moving out! My main gripe about that is the fact that the conductors are exposed on the plug - I had a cable short out on something in my car 'between seats heap'; it melted the end of the cable and took out the charger plugged into the lighter socket... Never trusted them since that.
You left it in the car where it get insanely hot and the plastic melted since apple use a softer plastic for the enviroment :)
On the iPhone it's not so easy to just include another extra chip there
(which is also the reason why the Pro still maxes out at 1TB - there is no space for a second storage chip and there are no 2TB chips yet).
@Raja995mh33 Well the 4th gen Air has the Same Soc as the iPhone 12, so it only makes sense that Apple intentionally made the iPhone 15 USB 2.0 only

i am SO GLAD they chose USB C instead of microusb as the standard. however, i do seem to have noticed that llightning does appear to be stronger than usb c, by the smallest but. idk if its just me, but ive gone through about 4 USB C cables in the 3 months ive had my new ipad, whereas iv onyl had 1 lightning cord in my 11 months of having my iphone.
I've not broken a single usb calbe in my entire life and I use them since 1996
what now?
honestly thanks to wireless charging and magsafe i cant remember the last time i actually had to charge my phone with a cable lmao. i still keep spare cables all over the place however haha
to be honest I am still waiting for the unreasonable wish of having fully working virtualization on mobiles.
Doesn't matter if it's android or ios.
First one to do it gets my approval.
Although even if apple makes it possible those meager 6 gb of ram will never be enough for anything. Not that 12 would be either so android isn't much better though
Linus is way better than Mrwhoseboss
Linus just gives better and in detail review
Might've been worth mentioning the the USB C cables included with the pro models only support USB 2 transfer speeds so you'll have to buy another cable to fully utilise the 10Gbps that the phones support
Apple being Apple as always 😑
Good thing I have tons of those already, since USB 3 is by no means new!!
@@Gurenn83 Shit Standard stays shit standard too - really hope there will be a standard in the future where we doesn't need to get a bachelor degree in USB-C to but a cable
