@@Samstercraft77 I might have missed it, but I don't think he mentioned price range too, and I'm pretty sure something like a US$40k Metavertu Himalaya would fit the requirements ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@l1233799 + has compatible frequencies. I know the 4G bands can be different in different locations ... I have no clue whether it covers the Canadian ones.
Too bad its europe exclusive. The fairphone 4 didn't work that well on North American carriers, so if the fairphone 5 is similar, I wouldn't recommend it for him.
I love to see a good chunk of the community suggesting the Fairphone 5. I think everybody likes the concept, but the phones are just always a bit too inferior and pricey, although I think the 5 might be a turnaround. Would love to see a long term review
Fairphone is not a good phone, even if it has the incredibly long life and reparability I doubt anybody will be wanting to buy new parts in a few years, plus they removed the headphone jack (and they suddenly started making bluetooth earbuds and headphones) and has pretty bad hardware
But it doesn't satisfy ground rule 3. I've no idea how so many people just missed that. I mean theoretically it could work but it only supports some of the required bands, which is something no one mentions.
Fairphone. I get that the challenge is to pick a phone that fulfills what he wants, but that would also be a great move from the community imo. Also, that pool clip was hilarious.
I literally came here to comment Fairphone, am so pleased it is on top. I'm using a fair phone right now, and it works fine on t-mobile/mint. Murena is the main way to buy it in the US, which does NOT have play store support, but it isn't too difficult to either have the Original Fairphone shipped from Europe, or to simply install fair phone OS on a Murena fairphone (what I did.) I actually highly recommend fair phone. Being able to swap out the battery by itself sets it apart. If you use Murena, you basically get q bulletproof ad blocker built into the OS itself which is amazing.
I'd love to see Linus try the Fairphone 5. Especially as I haven't seen a long term review yet, and I'm very curious how the Fairphone would be in day to day use.
Its garbage in disguise. No one cares about an processor that lasts long, it will lack performance in long term anyways. And those replacablre parts aren’t cheap. idk how people are getting brainwashed this easily by good sounding shit deals.
I wen't to their website to check pricing, but they didn't have a country selector in the drop down list for Canada or USA. Then I saw this (from fairphone website): The Fairphone 5 is headed to Europe and the U.K. later this month, but there are no plans for a release in North America
As a daily user of an lg v30, and a guy who keeps his guard up (and thus am still on android...7? Haven't updated in YEARS), the relatively slow processor doesn't bother me...often.
I think the Fairphone 5 would be a good option. Not super fast and the camera isn't the best compared to other phones in the price range, but al other things are great! I now use a Fairphone 5 and im super happy with it. My old Fairphone 3 is still very usable (Android 13!)
I totally agree, makes sense also to pair it with Framework laptop and a bit ironic (Fairphone not available in NA, whereas Framework not available in EU) but a solid combo for sure.
Fairphone actually fits your description pretty well. Murena OS is more customizable and has some awesome features like a built in bulletproof ad blocker, but it does not work with Paid apps on the Playstore without some major tinkering (as it is "degoogled") so you may want to stick with the fairphone OS. I can vouch for it though, I daily drive the Fairphone 4 in the US
It's a little discouraging since I voted for the Zenfone 10 but Fairphone 5 has already taken a huge lead, looks like it's a lock for the winner even though the poll runs for a whole week.
As a Framework investor, the right answer feels like Fairphone5 or Nothing 2 - they don't meet every requirement but have repairability and the future in mind
yeah i am quite interested in the nothing @@brokhan8522 - I've always been on pure pixel android and hated my Samsung experience so loath going to something modified but the overall reasoning for decisions seems sound for them unlike Samsung
I am currently on the Nothing Phone 2 after years of iOS and really enjoy it. It basically offers everything you talked about. Besides that if you want a really nice camera experience check out some of the current xperia like the 1v or 5v.
+1 for Xperia. I preferred Xperia phones back since 2011 until they kept putting prices up and up and up till its way out of my league. I still have good memories with my Z1 Compact.
The only smartphone on the market that i know of with top tier spec AND headphone jack + SD card support. The crazy camera control is also a nice plus.
no just no He should go with the iPhone 15 it has all the things he needs and has usb-c for fast data transfer altough it doesnt have a folding screen so maybe thet fold 5 is the way to go?
I think either Zenfone 10/9 or a Fairphone 5 would fulfill many of the requested features he's mentioned, i might have to do similarly in the not too distant future depending on how long i can stretch my OnePlus 6 out for
I vote for the fairphone because repairability was so important to you, that you invested in Framework. there should be no argument for not going the same route for a phone.
@@Ryan-tn4gkthey often can get their hands on stuff that isnt available in CA, i dont think fairphone would block the canadian mobilereception hz so it should still work over there
I would love to see a quality long-time review of the new Fairphone 5. It looks really awesome and it would go perfectly with the whole framework theme
Judging by all your preferences you stated, I feel like your best match would probably be an S23 Ultra. Though, I also think the Fairphone 5 is a good idea like everyone else is saying. Personally though, I think it would be really funny if you used an iPad Mini with cellular.
If the community gets him an Ultra he'll keep it and it'll do all the things he wants. Even though I main an iPhone 14 Pro and love it, I'm still very attached to my S23 Ultra.
For the sake of Linus being a framework investor I want to see him use the Fairphone 5. I really want to see how it lives up to the right to repair ideal he believes in😊
I understand the sentiment, but phone repair and laptop repair are very different. Framework has much more support and variety than Fairphone. That is like comparing the NFL and high-school football. They are in different leagues atm. I hope Fairphone gets there, but there is currently a lot more to go.
I vote they take a framework motherboard and make a phone from that. +10 points if they manage to make it look like one of those giant grey 80s cell phones.
I was thinking the same thing, assuming it meets his criteria (which I believe it does) the Fairphone would match his philosophy and the Framework laptop.
I would absolutely kill to see Linus driving an Xperia phone. I feel like they're really slept on as a brand and a lot of people underestimate just how nice the phones are. Plus, they're old fashioned in a good way, still having a headphone jack and SD card slot insofar as that matters to a person.
I want to see linus daily drive the fairphone 5, reviewers always say how good repairability and sustainability is but never use it green phones for more than a minute.
Title: Dropped my phone in the pool Reality: Dropped airpods in the pool, proceded to drop myself into the pool and soak my phone in wet clothes. Yeah you might want to consider some water protection for your next phone lmao.
I have a fairphone 4 and never regretted my decision. It does what it needs to, and that it does good. The camera is ok, the battery is good, the screen is good, the formfactor is the sweetspot between small enough to not be a tablet in your pocket, and big enough to enjoy looking at it, that hardware is strong enough for everyday use. It's not that expensive and it just works. Long term android support is a big plus, and it's rugged AF. I dropped it multiple times, and the only thing that happend when I dropped in in my bathroom on the edge-side, is that the bathroom-tile now is missing a chunk. And even if something breaks, just order the replacement and swap it. A new display costs €80 and the battery being swapable, I see no reason why i would need to upgrade anytime soon. Even when the Android support is over... the firmware is open and I can go with /e/os or something like that.
Would be cool(and informative) to see him use fairphone or any other budget offerings but I really want his opinions in the pixel or the oppo fold, the passport fold form factor really excites me and given that he is only known tech youtuber who uses(ed) the foldable he can have some great insights on it.
If it was available in the na, fairphone would be an amazong phone for Linus Repairability aside, the new fold looks pretty good, altho, an incremental upgrade from the 4, it gets better goodies every year!
I’m going to pile on the bandwagon here and say the Fairphone is what I’m most interested in hearing linus’s take on. Continuing the investigation of repairability and sustainability first devices like the framework.
Fairphone is probably the smart choice here, as others have rightfully pointed out. For an interesting oddball runner-up, I'll suggest a phone that LTT might not even be able to obtain (or use in Canada), but that would make for an amazing piece for both the main channel as well as for LTT labs to toy with - Samsung's S23 Tactical Edition. It's ruggedized, has night vision/low light capture modes, features like full radio disable, as well as Software Defined Radio support, VPN chaining and other doodads. It's just an interesting piece of hardware in and of itself. Toss it through a test gauntlet, see if it's as tough as they say it is.
Fairphone is not really a good choice outside of the EU. You will have to rely on resellers for the phone (which means higher prices and no warranty) and any replacement parts, and you will have no recourse if it turns out the phone doesn’t support the frequencies on NA cellular companies.
except the fairphone isn't properly available in North America. it can be imported and might be usable, but it'll very likely have frequent(though maybe bearable) cellular connection issues. might be interesting to see Linus try and give a review on how well it works in Canada. (i've used the international version of the LG G8S ThinQ in the US and frequently had issues, but it was still mostly usable, but I'm not a power phone user like Linus).
His faith was justified: the winning option rn is a fair phone. the runner up is a pixel fold and you have to scroll to at least 4-5 more good options before we get into memes such as use an ipad, or get the smallest android phone there is.
@@betalars And with everyone mentioning the iPhone15 or the latest Samsung by lack of imagination, if FairPhone wasn't brought up he would end up with the next iPhone
You can get around the USB2 speeds easily. I use a file explorer on my phone called CX File Explorer, you can permanently set up connections to network shares and copy+paste files and whole folders over wifi. It also shows up in the 'Share' list so I can skip finding the actual file if I'm just trying to send a single picture or video to my PC. Much quicker and less hassle than digging out a USB cable, plugging it in, and waiting for Windows to scan a folder with thousands of files in it before I can even start to copy. Also much less buggy than MTP on Windows. I've specifically referenced my current file explorer of choice, but I'm sure there are many others that offer the same features.
@@Stygian247 I think Canada has better luck with imported ones than USA. If I imported one, it could only use T-Mobile and nothing else. I think Canada has 2 working networks for EU phones (check me on this)
@@adonnenlooking on GSMArena Fairphone 5 might work in NA. But tbh, no way how to read the specs Linus put up here. Just gonna pull up OnePlus specsheet to compare. OnePlus specsheet pulled up, I highly doubt it will work. OnePlus has international bands support. Fairphone does not explicitly specify them
@@adonnen For some reason I didn't think about this when I suggested it (even tho this was one of the first requirements). Some of the bands are supported on the phone, but not all of them. No idea if it will work. Some users on reddit seem to suggest that it worked for them without any problems in Canada. I found an article from Fairphone named "Global Network Coverage" that shows the supported bands for each model and some things to be aware of.
I'm interested in hearing Linus give us his hands-on experience with the Fairphone 5. I want to know if the drawbacks that come from the reparability are a deal-breaker over a longer period of time.
I'd love to see you try a Fairphone, newest or otherwise. You've championed using older hardware for the sake or less e-waste before, and I think Fairphone have a solid approach to catering the used market with repairability. The promise of sourcing ethical materials is another massive benefit. I'm also really curious about their use of a IoT SoC for prolonged software updates on the Fairphone 5, and how fast the Fairphone 4/3/2/1 is today since they've never used the fastest chips but promise long software updates (are the software updates even worth it if the phone isn't fast enough? Aside from security).
For sustainability's sake, I'd love you to try the Fairphone 5. Although it's pricey for a middle-high level smartphone, it's reparable, you can tinker with it if you want, they try to ensure work rights and fairly sourced materials... I don't think they ship directly to Canada, but you can make it happen anyway. Great content! Thanks for letting us share out thoughts.
I’m for iOS but we all already know what to expect from iPhones. I’m with all the suggestions for Fairphone. It’d be nice to know the experience long-term and perhaps Linus can repair/upgrade components later too.
iOS is great for user experience and for stable day to day use, but good luck on sideloading apps on it, you can only hope that the app is available on Test Flight. Android on the other hand lacks the ux/ui polish of the iOS, but sideloading apps is waaay easier, not to mention that there's way more apps available for android than for ios. My opinion is that Fairphone is the better choice for linus
i'd absolutely like to see you daily drive a Fairphone 5. Not necessarily because i think it's the best choice for you long term but because I'd love to get your thoughts after using it for one month. Release day or 1 week after reviews can only show so much and Linus actually daily driving it for a month would shine a new light on a phone that deserves it. If you don't like it you can always switch to a more generic brand afterwards but if you do it might be a necessary boost for the phone brand.
Why does it need more boost if it’s good? It’s does fit he’s need but in a meh way. Better go with a proper phone with great software support and with app support. Like iPhone 15PM. That one ticks all the boxes. For years
@@chrispy.critter well i don't know if it's good, that's why i want him to make a proper review of a phone that's not from a major brand to see if it can work as a daily driver. Keep in mind if linus doesn't like it he can always switch to a boring brand like apple samsung or google and will get a phone that works just fine. (though Linus has said several times that he doesn't like the new iPhone, see the WAN show and the most recent Short Circuit video)
@@almc8445 According to the spec sheet it supports all 5G bands in Canada and most but not all 4G bands*. 3G and 2G bands are also supported *700MHz B12 is supported but B13, B17, B29 aren't. 5200MHz B46 isn't supported either
@chrissjogren6843 I would love a Fairphone review, but I can't see it being competitive for the price. I dislike Apple, but iPhone 15 is a good daily driver now that they decided to ditch their two decade old connector for a decade old connector. 😅 But I would pick a Samsung, Apple, or Google phone. Personally, I think Pixel is the best option, as it takes the best pictures, on par with Sony. The iPhone has the best video. Samsung is the best screen and viewing experience.
I bought Asus Zenfone 10 recently and I am extremely satisfied with it. The camera is great, the specs are pretty much identical to Rog phone 7 and I am surprised how compact it is. But it will make a terrible workphone given it has no DeX support etc. But it does have 16 GB of RAM, snapdragon 8 gen 2, 512 GB of storage, 144 Hz AMOLED screen (albeit it is tiny by modern standards), fast wireless charging, 5G and Wifi 7 support, a gimbal for the camera (this one is huge, the footage from it is really well stabilised for a phone) and decent battery for the size (4300 mAh). It comes with Android 13 out of the box and since it is 2023 phone, I expect the 3 year support (as that is the manufacturer's declared warranty period). And it has a headphone jack and fingerprint scanner in powerbutton (I have really bad experience so far with underscreen scanners). But I am pretty sure the screen size is the deal breaker on this one and yeah... zenfone 10 has like 6 inch screen which is tiny for the workload like watching 4k video (it has 1080 screen anyway) or opening spreadsheets :/
Only 2 years of upgrades (ie 3 years of support) vs 4 on samsung (for 5 years), cheap display, thick bezels, plastic back, 50% more cost vs Samsung S23, and dual non-flagship cameras vs triple on competition. Samsung makes the best and most stable android skin on the market and have inhouse tweaks (such as the good lock app) and extensive software support. Pixels can't and could never compete to it, and since ASUS is based on AOSP (less features than pixel) it's less likely they can. Google's inhouse phones used to have better software than samsung, but that was before the introduction of OneUI with the S7. Pixels and Nexus phones (I owned 2 nexus phones) have never been stable to be used long term. Both of my nexus phones ended up with hardware faults after 2 years.
I can't see your reply, only have a notification of it. It stops after "Note 10...". I think yt hid it Cheap amoled displays have thicker bezels (esp. top and bottom) than the expensive ones. If you go to GSMarena you'll see the s23 is the same size and thinner than the zenphone, but it has .2in bigger screen. Also brighter. Yeah compared to Note 10 the bezels are smaller, but note 10 is from 2019 (the samsung one, not the cheap xiaomi one) Plastic back will deteriorate after 2 years regardless of whether you have a case on or not, whereas glass will look good as new for 4+ years as long as you don't drop it. It's also more premium. If you abuse your phones or don't use a case you might prefer plastic, otherwise glass is the way to go It turns out the main camera has the same specs as the S23, but the ultrawide is a bit cheaper and there is no telephoto. It's good that you like it, but for me it smells like a 450$ phone with an 800$ price tag. IMO there's no reason to buy it over an S23
My top 2 choices are the Fairphone 5 and the Pixel 8. I feel like most tech reviewers don't give these devices as much time of day. I'd also love to see Linus try to repair the Pixel 8 with parts from iFixit. I hope he goes with a phone that doesn't get a lot of focus and tests the longevity of the device. I want to see if people would be interested in the smaller Pixel getting a long term review for once.
I would add if money is no object than the 512GB Pixel Fold should be in the conversation as well since the unlocked version has all the major North American bands, it has the large screen he would like, since he hates replacing phones unless he must, the long term support of the Pixels is very good, and the chipset will be better in the long run vs. the Fairphone which uses a lower specd SOC originally meant for IOT devices.
"My top 2 choices are the Fairphone 5" Did everyone regurgitating this trashy phone just not watch the video? Is this another one plus wave of fanboyism for a brand? This phone doesn't suit his needs, which he ever so clearly defined in the video.
@@Death-999 it's not a perfect fit but it's a phone Linus will dig into and meets a lot of his niche interests. It would also make for really good content which would help the video.
+1 for the Sony Xperia 1, the screen (always on display) although on the smaller side due to its 21:9 ratio (but may benefit your smaller hands :)) is an absolute gem for watching content on, the colours are beautiful with a creator mode so points for accuracy (you can change the colour profile quite easily if you want something cooler or warmer) and the sound is surprisingly good probably thanks to its front facing stereo speakers. it has a 120hz option for the display as well as a headphone jack and a dedicated camera button which you can use to activate the camera by holding it down. calls havent dropped for me and the fingerprint sensor is on the side power button which is in just the right spot to have your phone unlocked and ready to go just from holding it naturally. the phone is speedy and rarely gets too hot (unlike past xperias im looking at you z5 premium), it has lived a fair amount of drops as did my z5 premium and also as a benefit to you are waterproof tho its not something that is openly said because legal side of it most likely. uses usb 3 with battery options geared towards saving the battery such as learning when you plug the phone in and sleep it will delay charging so its not on all night and can be set to charge to a cap of 80%. the xperia has a one hand mode which can easily be activated by an on screen shortcut. sorry for bad format was typing as watching. RIP ill post this anyway but poll is closed. LG Wing won
I think it would be funny for him to daily drive a full cellular tablet as his daily phone. I recommend either the revvl tab 5g or Doogee T30 pro tablet.
On the iOS side, I'd say either the 15 or 15 Plus and on the Android side it has to be between the Nothing Phone 2, Galaxy S23 Plus and Z Flip 5. All of which are great devices, so technically whichever you pick, you can't go wrong with.
I upgraded from the Note9 to the S23 Ultra. Though a more expensive option, it has expanded on everything I loved about my note9 with many improvements. The 100MP camera can record up to 8k video, ensuring a few years of viability for a content creator. Especially as often you enjoy finding yourself in tight places while filming.
I would love to see a review of the note9 with a factory reset. You can review how it aged and also use features and functions that are no longer available (fingerprint sensor scroll, mst payment, force touch display, iris scanner, oxigen sensor, expandable storage, etc).
Ive seen 3 fairphone comments and I'd have to agree with them. Its definitely an interesting phone to check out but its definitely not like the fold unfortunately
Id love to see the Xperia 1 V since it has legacy features like a headphone jack and SD card. The screen is incredible for watching Movie content and the Bravia Core and auto HDR does a phenomenal job. I'd love for Sony to get more coverage so they don't go the way of LG...
+1 for Sony Xperia. I have the Xperia 5 III and it is honestly the best phone I have ever used. It is snappy, the screen looks great, it has a decent camera (great for a phone), and it is even easy to use with one hand. Plus the headphone jack and dual sim which are maybe not the most used features, but very inconvenient when missing. My biggest complaint is probably that the screen doesn't get very bright so it is a bit hard to use in direct sunlight.
I can't say this enough, but I wish you'd get a Fairphone. It's essentially the Framework of smartphones: easy to repair, parts easily accessible, software spanning 5 years for features (possibly 8 if enough support is given by the consumers) and 8-10 for security, and it's pretty respectable specs-wise. I'm not sure about the bands, but that is something that can be checked on either their site or on GSMArena.
I think you should try the Fairphone 5. It's easily repairable and has software support till 2031 which makes the phone ideal for long term usage and not worry about forking out a lot of money on the phone during the course.
I don't think the Fairphone 5 is that fast. The phone is definitely easily repairable and efficient with 6nm QCM6490 chip, but down the line, I think Linus would be better off with something like a xperia 1 V which features a newer 4nm snapdragon gen 2. Not to mention the 21:9 screen ratio and 4k 120hz screen, just sounds better overall than the fairphone 5.
@@zybch If you use the official OS, it does have Play Store and the other Google goodies you expect from an Android phone. On a custom ROM it's up to your decision.
I would love to see Linus try a midrange phone (think galaxy a series) and tell us how it compares to the flagship experience and if the absence of the fancy features is a hindrance in the long run Btw on Sony's android skin, you can get used to it easily - I use a samsung and a sony at the same time and it's a second of thinking maybe when I switch btw them
The Pixel also doesn't let you put the back button on the right-hand side and can also confirm you get used to it. I used right-hand side back buttons my whole life but after just a couple of days on the Pixel it became completely natural again.
Yeah, I was thinking this too. See if he is able to do his daily workload on a phone that is more likely to be bought by the average person. Be good to know how things like speed and camera etc affect his usual daily duties. Personally I think once he got used to it being a little slower, I think he would be surprised that you don't need a flagship these days, an average phone is totally capable of doing daily duties, especially as a 2023 average phone is probably 10x better than a 5-6 year old flagship :)
id recommend the honor 70/90 they both have good display's, 90 hz refresh rate, amazing triple camera, an amazing night mode, and it only costs around 25,000 - 30,000 Philippine peso
This is why learning how to write is important. Even though this comment is edited it is still somewhat difficult to read. Tell me English is your second language.
I was thinking about this phone as well! Mainly because I admire a phonebrand that is more honest and isnt made in those nasty factories with antijumping measures.
As someone who still uses Note9 (private) and have an S23 (work) its really incredible how the phone holds up and it really isnt that slow for me compared to the S23, though it could be due to the chip difference in NA/EU (Snapdragon/Exynos) the major difference I notice is in refresh rate, but its a damn shame Note9 hasnt been updated to newer Androids and only had 2 major upgrades
Yeah. I'm using a note9 for a year now. It still feels snappy although I've upgraded from an S5 Mini. Hopefully modern websites (and apps) won't going to crawl on it at least for a couple of years...
Why not delve into custom ROMs, I have a Note 8 on lineage OS Android 12, it's not technically challenging to install if you read a few guides on how to!
Pls go with the phone (2) by nothing. I've had it for a while and it's insanely fast, hard as a rock, resistant to the heaviest of rain and gets LOTS of love by the devs (meaning you wont have any problem w how it reacts with the ecosystem, car etc.) . The only downside is the the camera, which isn't bad but not remarkable either
Considering the investment in Framework, its mobile counterpart would be a Fairphone (minus the upgradeability of course) But many already picked up on that and it seems to be the most popular on reddit It doesn't have stereo speaker though, but it checks all the other soft requirements Other than that, my experience with many brands got me back to Samsung cause they ultimately are the most popular android brand and it's the most important factor when it comes to support, parts availability (and cost) and accessories compatibility. So I would say the cheapest Samsung that checks all the boxes would be the best choice. A mid tier option is more than enough for most people nowadays (and most of them still have an headphone jack !), and less power hungry cpu on a 4000 or 5000mah battery makes it last for days while still having good performance. But it all depends on how you use your phone and maybe a power user would push that hardware near 100% while a top tier chip at 50% would make the same battery last longer
@@mola1.980 its not waterproof 😂 jokes aside fairphone still does not compare to same priced other brands. Sometimes its more about what you get for the money. I believe on his phone are running a lot of apps in the background which pretty much cant be handled smooth with an SDqcm6490 and 8gb ram
yes! i really want one but the ff5 isnt launching in the USA (yet, hopefully). him doing a review / daily driving it will get the word out and draw more attention to it! really looking forward to when it releases since my current phone (oneplus 6) is on its last legs, and i would love a de-googled android phone that is repairable into the far off future
hey i'm trying to make an ai that you can to fluently talk to and i recommend fairphone they strive for right to repair and possibly if the camera is not good enough you can probably do a mod and maybe ask them for pieces for the mod 13:38 i am watching the video while i am typing phone repair guru makes some pretty good shorts about fairphone and right to repair sometimes longform
A pixel 8 with a security focused OS like graphene OS (which is just a security focused skin of android). It would be great for linus to cover more privacy focused products in our constantly surveilled world
I would agree, but even the basic one with new security hardware would be good enough. I would probably go more for *Pixel 8 pro* for a long day usage with that LTPO 1 - 120 hertz screen.
Pixel 8 pro might make a lot of sense here it should be coming out very soon making the review timely and with it being quite a price hike over the 7 pro I daily drive and love it will interesting to know it it's truly worth the expected price hikes
I get the recommendations for the Fairphone 5. Now, for an android phone that 'just works' AND still benefits from the flexibility of Android, I would recommend either the zenfone 10 or pixel 7 pro. Filtering by screen size as Linus would prefer a larger one for productivity purposes, my last word is on the Pixel 7 pro. Its main weakness is performance/heat when gaming, which is not a concern here.
But man I get it. I still absolutely deny to upgrade my 3-4 year old phone as long as it just works.. Because the upgrade would be an absolute nightmare with all the apps you gotta migrate these days. So I am waiting for a "deadly" failure for my phone as well.. wont upgrade before^^
I'm using a Galaxy S23 Ultra and it's a night and day difference between it and my older Note 9. The S Pen is great and the fact that it is guaranteed to get four years of major updates and additional five years of security updates is just neat.
dbrand should really "force" you to use one of their Grip cases. Seriously, best case i could ever ask for. No screen protector and yet the phone still feels like new after 2 years of constant use.
Either buy the nothing phone 2 ( I wouldn’t buy it myself) or buy the Xperia Sony. Headphone jack is there. Great camera. The battery life is awesome. USB c transfer speeds are quick. 120 hrtz display with variable refresh rate. ( let me make sure it has it and I’ll edit this to just say yes. ) great dac. Headphone jack wise and Alac.

If it was up to me i'd put Linus on the last Blackberry's (key1/2), just so we might actually get keyboard phones again🥲
I was going to suggest the Fold 5 or the S23 Ultra, but the Fairphone 5 makes a lot more sense given his interest in framework.
I concur on the Fairphone 5, if it's available in canada
Yeah this
@@l1233799 + has compatible frequencies. I know the 4G bands can be different in different locations ... I have no clue whether it covers the Canadian ones.
Too bad its europe exclusive. The fairphone 4 didn't work that well on North American carriers, so if the fairphone 5 is similar, I wouldn't recommend it for him.
Fairphone yes! I want to get one. It I assume it'll be crap
I love to see a good chunk of the community suggesting the Fairphone 5. I think everybody likes the concept, but the phones are just always a bit too inferior and pricey, although I think the 5 might be a turnaround. Would love to see a long term review
I’m suggesting it precisely because they’re crap phones.

They also don't work in Canada
They do work in Canada, just not on all bands, if I understood correctly. And importing it is no issue

I think the Fairphone would be a perfect fit for Linus, as he would be able to modify it as needed
lol have you seen it
yeah am actually sad that it looks like the Wing is gonna win it, Fairphone deserves a review
nah
i completely agree i think it would be his kinda thing
Fairphone is not a good phone, even if it has the incredibly long life and reparability I doubt anybody will be wanting to buy new parts in a few years, plus they removed the headphone jack (and they suddenly started making bluetooth earbuds and headphones) and has pretty bad hardware
We should put this guy on a fairphone, be the change we want to see in the world
The thing is the phone itself is not that good.
But it doesn't satisfy ground rule 3. I've no idea how so many people just missed that. I mean theoretically it could work but it only supports some of the required bands, which is something no one mentions.
@@raidzor5452i just hope it won’t be google, Apple or Samsung 😊 that’s why I would say Sony, Shift or Fairphone
Framework + fairphone would be in-sane 🤩
Or the zenfone if he likes small phones
Fairphone.
I get that the challenge is to pick a phone that fulfills what he wants, but that would also be a great move from the community imo.
Also, that pool clip was hilarious.
i really wanted that phone to be good. that phone can last a long time but you wont use it cause its laggy right from the start.
it's really bad
True.
And, according to zack, not available in NA
I literally came here to comment Fairphone, am so pleased it is on top.
I'm using a fair phone right now, and it works fine on t-mobile/mint. Murena is the main way to buy it in the US, which does NOT have play store support, but it isn't too difficult to either have the Original Fairphone shipped from Europe, or to simply install fair phone OS on a Murena fairphone (what I did.)
I actually highly recommend fair phone. Being able to swap out the battery by itself sets it apart. If you use Murena, you basically get q bulletproof ad blocker built into the OS itself which is amazing.
A long term review of the Fairphone would be interesting to see
YES, that would also be a great move in terms of what he stands for.
Maybe a very personal video, but the quality and non biased view gets me engaged. 100% doing better love this video ❤
FAIRPHONE 5 GO GO ⚡⚡ fairphone X framework awesome duo
I have a fairphone 4 and have used it for nearly a year. It's pretty good but I frequently borrow my wife's iphone x for better photos.
I wen't to their website to check pricing, but they didn't have a country selector in the drop down list for Canada or USA. Then I saw this (from fairphone website):
The Fairphone 5 is headed to Europe and the U.K. later this month, but there are no plans for a release in North America
still rocking the fp3
I am really thinking Fairphone is a great choice. It would be intresting how the rather weak processing performance actually matters in daily life
Hehaw no one diddly likes fairphone their prices aren't fair hehaw diddly doo
The 5 should be better. I've got a 4 as a work phone and the camera is weak...as is it's audio on flac.
My other choice would be a Sony Xperia 5 V
As a daily user of an lg v30, and a guy who keeps his guard up (and thus am still on android...7? Haven't updated in YEARS), the relatively slow processor doesn't bother me...often.
would be great advertisement for them
@@internet_userrcan you say that like a normal person?
I think the Fairphone 5 would be a good option. Not super fast and the camera isn't the best compared to other phones in the price range, but al other things are great! I now use a Fairphone 5 and im super happy with it. My old Fairphone 3 is still very usable (Android 13!)
Linus is the only guy who knows which are the best hardware around and still needs the audience to choose one for him!
This probably is just a test 😅
I think him trying the fairphone 5 would be really intersesting.
YES. That would be a great move.
This is what I really want to see
Is this available in n Canada?
Does it support NA bands properly? They haven't planned on doing NA releases at all afaik
He just said he wants a working play store experience so I'd assume none of that "problems with paid apps" thing
fairphone 5 is relesing this/next month.
I don't really know if a degoogled os fits with an heavy google product user thoe
It literally is one of his hard stoppers so it can’t make the list the Zenphone could
As a Framework investor, the right answer feels like Fairphone5 or Nothing 2 - they don't meet every requirement but have repairability and the future in mind
i have the Nothing (1) and love it so I was also thinking of telling Linus to get the Nothing (2)
yeah i am quite interested in the nothing @@brokhan8522 - I've always been on pure pixel android and hated my Samsung experience so loath going to something modified but the overall reasoning for decisions seems sound for them unlike Samsung
Maybe even the pine 64 phone
I think he needs to lean on Framework’s CEO’s shoulder and say “so I need a new phone…”
Exact reason why I bought Nothing 1. I'm sick of all the e-waste.
I am currently on the Nothing Phone 2 after years of iOS and really enjoy it. It basically offers everything you talked about.
Besides that if you want a really nice camera experience check out some of the current xperia like the 1v or 5v.
+1 for Fairphone, definitely interested myself, but I'd love to see a critical view on it!
Xperia is really the only out of left field option I would want. It MUST BE DONE
He said he watched 4k content. Need a 4k screen. +1 for Sony.
Also Xperia is very comfy to use with one hand due to its size. Been using Sonys for years and wouldnt change!
+1 for Xperia.
I preferred Xperia phones back since 2011 until they kept putting prices up and up and up till its way out of my league. I still have good memories with my Z1 Compact.
I would like to see that
The only smartphone on the market that i know of with top tier spec AND headphone jack + SD card support.
The crazy camera control is also a nice plus.
I think the Fairphone 5 would be a pretty good choice, given Linus uses the framewrok notebook, would be a nice combo
damn i love the amount of fairphone comments in this video and yeah, I also supporting this.
yes
Does the Fairphone have North American bands, cuz it only sold in the EU
Not even through the whole vid and got to the repairability section, came here to comment this thing right here lol
no just no He should go with the iPhone 15 it has all the things he needs and has usb-c for fast data transfer altough it doesnt have a folding screen so maybe thet fold 5 is the way to go?
this guy literally made a video to ask people for recommendations on a new phone. And the revenue will more than pay for the phone. Absolute genius.
I think either Zenfone 10/9 or a Fairphone 5 would fulfill many of the requested features he's mentioned, i might have to do similarly in the not too distant future depending on how long i can stretch my OnePlus 6 out for
absolutely. I was thinking zenfones but then I remembered the fairphone which is awesome and needs recognition
I would really love for him to do zenphone or fairphone, I would love zenphone more as a personal preference but fairphone as a tech person
Can't do fairphone due to the fact that it doesn't support CDMA, he wouldn't be able to make calls
OP 6 makes for a cool Linux phone btw. Not really daily-driver-ready for most people, but definitely a fun thing to play with
I'd love to see him use a phone as small as he is
Fairphone 5 I would love to see you daily drive one of those. So many upgrade options for reasonable prices.
Yes. It's also a great move for the environment.
How about the Fair phone? It's a "framework" like phone with replaceable modules. Just a thought.
But it's soo freakishly slow.
Junk tbh
I know it doesn't meet the requirements but I'd love to see you or a member of your team daily drive the "light phone"
The fairphone 5 would be really interesting
I vote for the fairphone because repairability was so important to you, that you invested in Framework.
there should be no argument for not going the same route for a phone.
YES PLEASE.
Judging by the intro clip, I think water resistance might be a bit more important than repairability
I don't think that is available for us/Canada? I could be wrong though. I think the fair phone 4 just got us/Canada support
Its actually winning right now
@@Ryan-tn4gkthey often can get their hands on stuff that isnt available in CA, i dont think fairphone would block the canadian mobilereception hz so it should still work over there
I would love to see a quality long-time review of the new Fairphone 5.
I mean we could make him though
If the community gets him an Ultra he'll keep it and it'll do all the things he wants. Even though I main an iPhone 14 Pro and love it, I'm still very attached to my S23 Ultra.
More jelly star. Less heavy propaganda phones
S23 Ultra FTW win for Linus. No case c/w dents+ drops + diving into pool = Linus daily driver and backup phone
s23(standard) or asus Zenphone
Isn't there a dispute between Louis Rossman and Fairphone? I read the title video a while ago, but I didn't watch it.
This ^^^^^
I think it would be interesting to grab the new fairphone considering how much Linus loves customer repairability
I would absolutely kill to see Linus driving an Xperia phone. I feel like they're really slept on as a brand and a lot of people underestimate just how nice the phones are. Plus, they're old fashioned in a good way, still having a headphone jack and SD card slot insofar as that matters to a person.
I'm saying Fairphone 5
It's a true flagship now, made for someone like an investor in Framework
yeah, that sounds like a great choice for someone who cares about longevity!
I came on to say the same thing. Take a like and let's get this to the top. I would enjoy a detailed review of the phone.
I want to see linus daily drive the fairphone 5, reviewers always say how good repairability and sustainability is but never use it green phones for more than a minute.
It’s very slow though. He should test it for a month and than a iPhone 15 Pro Max or S23U and see if it’s worth the premium of worse repairability.
Ow... how he grasps the little strings of hope that we'll give him a decent phone is kinda sweet. Futile, but sweet.
Title: Dropped my phone in the pool
Reality: Dropped airpods in the pool, proceded to drop myself into the pool and soak my phone in wet clothes.
Yeah you might want to consider some water protection for your next phone lmao.
I vote fairphone - its like the framework laptop of phones (in that its super easy to repair) - I hope they have bands that support Canada though
Mr Mobile is also a big fan of foldables and he's been using them daily for many years
I *feel* like a hard rule *should* be water resistance after what prompted this 😅
IP certification wouldn't cut it, there should be a "Linus Resistant" certification.
This is the biggest reason I've had 3 Sony Xperia phones, all waterproof to IP65 or better.
@@mandrakejakereally niche use though

If it was available in the na, fairphone would be an amazong phone for Linus
Repairability aside, the new fold looks pretty good, altho, an incremental upgrade from the 4, it gets better goodies every year!

I think a fairphone smartphone should do it. I'm interested on seeing a daily driving review.

I want to know if the drawbacks that come from the reparability are a deal-breaker over a longer period of time.

note 9 is perfect and I still use it even I had to change the battery, it is nice cause it has headphones jack

@@chrispy.critter well i don't know if it's good, that's why i want him to make a proper review of a phone that's not from a major brand to see if it can work as a daily driver. @chrissjogren6843 I would love a Fairphone review, but I can't see it being competitive for the price. I dislike Apple, but iPhone 15 is a good daily driver now that they decided to ditch their two decade old connector for a decade old connector. 😅
But I would pick a Samsung, Apple, or Google phone.
I think yt hid it
Cheap amoled displays have thicker bezels (esp. top and bottom) than the expensive ones. If you go to GSMarena you'll see the s23 is the same size and thinner than the zenphone, but it has .2in bigger screen. Also brighter. Yeah compared to Note 10 the bezels are smaller, but note 10 is from 2019 (the samsung one, not the cheap xiaomi one)
Plastic back will deteriorate after 2 years regardless of whether you have a case on or not, whereas glass will look good as new for 4+ years as long as you don't drop it. It's also more premium. If you abuse your phones or don't use a case you might prefer plastic, otherwise glass is the way to go
It turns out the main camera has the same specs as the S23, but the ultrawide is a bit cheaper and there is no telephoto.
Pixel Fold would be my recommendation!
"My top 2 choices are the Fairphone 5"

LG Wing won
I hope you get the fairphone. I want to see you review it either way.
I think it would be funny for him to daily drive a full cellular tablet as his daily phone. I recommend either the revvl tab 5g or Doogee T30 pro tablet.
Doogee I'm afraid is not a reputable brand, some people has highly raised their caution of their working relationship
Would be funny to see him daily drive an iPad mini on cellular.
And have to put it in his pocket, not a bag
The amount this guy drops his stuff, he needs to go for a Fairphone 5. He'll really love the repairability and modularity aspect of it!
Especially as often you enjoy finding yourself in tight places while filming.
it is 200mp 😂
@@iam_joshua_bcxvii Whoops. Fat fingered that one. I appreciate the correction.
The 8k is cool but still quite unusable
Just a gimmick at this point
Just gotta wait until Apple decides to do it the Apple way
yeah but all the recent samsung phones are all the same. all boring.

The level of creativity on the channel since the reset is phenomenal. Amazing work!!
Most of these videos occurred or were in the pipeline prior to the reset....
"People will see what they want to see."
linus is the only guy who is so good at dropping things he can even drop himself (amazingly in a controlled manner)
I keep scrolling and I keep seeing new ones. I'm loving it here
Id love to see the Xperia 1 V since it has legacy features like a headphone jack and SD card.
+1 for Sony Xperia
Still love my Xperia 1 II 😬
+1 for Sony
+1
+1, Linus used to daily drive a compact Sony phone back then, would like to see him return
No support for North America.
Doesn't have google app store either as far as I know.
@@zybchit doesn't? Why would it not have it? It's not made in China as far as I am aware
It would be funny if we had him use his first phone or something to that effect

Samsung galaxy note 9 would also be fun while it lasts
I would love to see Linus try a midrange phone (think galaxy a series) and tell us how it compares to the flagship experience and if the absence of the fancy features is a hindrance in the long run
Btw on Sony's android skin, you can get used to it easily - I use a samsung and a sony at the same time and it's a second of thinking maybe when I switch btw them
The Pixel also doesn't let you put the back button on the right-hand side and can also confirm you get used to it. I used right-hand side back buttons my whole life but after just a couple of days on the Pixel it became completely natural again.
A is not mid Ranger it slightly below premium
A series used to be lowrange when M series were there too. But now A series are just cheaper "variations" of S flagships.
As Someone with an A series, Don't buy the trash.
id recommend the honor 70/90
they both have good display's, 90 hz refresh rate, amazing triple camera, an amazing night mode, and it only costs around 25,000 - 30,000 Philippine peso
Its funny how even how attached to our phones we are, we can still forget about it when in a rush
I had a stroke trying to read that
The fuck, what?
This is why learning how to write is important. Even though this comment is edited it is still somewhat difficult to read. Tell me English is your second language.
I agree, however. Whenever I leave my phone behind it's because it's on the charger.
@@wiill24b- but there are no grammatical errors
In case of serviceability Fairphone 5 is likely interesting, otherwise the latest variant of Motorola Razr would be interesting to see Linus' take on.
I was thinking about this phone as well! Mainly because I admire a phonebrand that is more honest and isnt made in those nasty factories with antijumping measures.
100% would love to see him try one of these longterm.
Still happy with my work note9 as well
Sometimes my old s10 feels snappier than my s22 ultra.
Yeah. I'm using a note9 for a year now. It still feels snappy although I've upgraded from an S5 Mini. Hopefully modern websites (and apps) won't going to crawl on it at least for a couple of years...
My missus has a Note 9, runs great bar the battery which needs replacing
Why not delve into custom ROMs, I have a Note 8 on lineage OS Android 12, it's not technically challenging to install if you read a few guides on how to!
Pls go with the phone (2) by nothing. I've had it for a while and it's insanely fast, hard as a rock, resistant to the heaviest of rain and gets LOTS of love by the devs (meaning you wont have any problem w how it reacts with the ecosystem, car etc.) . The only downside is the the camera, which isn't bad but not remarkable either
Considering the investment in Framework, its mobile counterpart would be a Fairphone (minus the upgradeability of course)
But many already picked up on that and it seems to be the most popular on reddit
It doesn't have stereo speaker though, but it checks all the other soft requirements
Other than that, my experience with many brands got me back to Samsung cause they ultimately are the most popular android brand and it's the most important factor when it comes to support, parts availability (and cost) and accessories compatibility.
I agree with and find it really nice from the community to suggest the Fairphone! Would be really interested hearing your thoughts
I would personally also say the Fairphone 5, especially because of the repairability!
but it lacks specs which linus would need. certain standards etc.
@@daniloistdaNo, all of his hard requirements are met. No smartphone meets all the soft requirements
Maybe
Pixel 8 pro. They just announced 7 years of updates, I think that's something you'd appreciate, since you wouldn't have to upgrade for a while.
Was coming here to say; 7 years of support is phenomenal, especially for the pixel line.
iPhone 6s on iOS 15…
that's if we can trust google to make good on that claim
Bro if you know google. Don’t just believe whatever they announced. They always killed most of the technology they announced
Yep, this is not bad at all. I suggest this one.
A pixel 8 with a security focused OS like graphene OS (which is just a security focused skin of android). It would be great for linus to cover more privacy focused products in our constantly surveilled world
@@AzVfL Comes out tomorrow.
Is privacy/security even still legal in Canada?
I would agree, but even the basic one with new security hardware would be good enough.
I would probably go more for *Pixel 8 pro* for a long day usage with that LTPO 1 - 120 hertz screen.
Pixel 8 pro might make a lot of sense here it should be coming out very soon making the review timely and with it being quite a price hike over the 7 pro I daily drive and love it will interesting to know it it's truly worth the expected price hikes
+1 for the Pixel Pro series. I have a 6 pro and it's been a great experience
I would love to see any of the recent pixel phones in Linus' hands
Went from pixel 6 pro to pixel 7 regular both have been very good
Nice to hear the re-recorded audio segments. Great work!
By the time this whole voting process ends, P8P might be out so might as well get that
I love how it went from "I'm never changing my foldable" to "I fell in the pool or some shit"
But man I get it. I still absolutely deny to upgrade my 3-4 year old phone as long as it just works..
Because the upgrade would be an absolute nightmare with all the apps you gotta migrate these days.
So I am waiting for a "deadly" failure for my phone as well.. wont upgrade before^^
Anything made in the las 5 years is good enough honestly.
I hope I can get an extra year on my note 10
As someone who uses an LG wing daily (yep) I would love to see Linus use one to find new purposes for the weird form factor.
Get a galaxy fold 5. Done. it's the phone you need Linus
I'm using a Galaxy S23 Ultra and it's a night and day difference between it and my older Note 9. The S Pen is great and the fact that it is guaranteed to get four years of major updates and additional five years of security updates is just neat.
upgraded from note 10+ to s23u, amazing experience so far
Yes, S23 Ultra is INCREDIBLE, have you ever seen a perfect phone so far ?
I've had every iphone since the iPhone 4 and just recently switched to the ultra, by far the nicest phone I've ever had.
I love this phone
from my s10 5G to S23 ultra. im loving it i just miss the headphone jack thats why im not giving up my s10 5g, will use it until it give up on me lol
I rarely ever comment but the pool bit was so funny! We can see that ltt team gets creative with more time on their hands
The pool bit was such a waste of resources, but so worth it haha.
dbrand should really "force" you to use one of their Grip cases.
