Hey guys, I normally don't comment but I felt I needed to. My daily phone is an LG Wing and I have had NONE of these issues with it. Especially the the screen issues: I have had mine for 2 years and have no scratches, no bubbles, and no wiggle. The screen is NOT loose, in fact it's tight and satisfying the way it slides out. I normally use it vertical but when I need to write an email or send a text I swivel and the smaller screen is perfect for the keyboard menu, it was designed for gboard and it works well. I use it when I'm watching live streams so I can see the full content and the chat. The gimble mode has been huge for me as a creator and the cameras are made for the live gimble feature. This phone was made for hyper nerds, creators, and warranty voiding pirates. It really gets a bad rap considering how great it is.
LG wing is goated. the phone is amazing. His review almost seems like it came from a hater before he even got the phone and wanted to hate it. I as well used the phone for 2 years. I'd still have it if it wasn't for the fact my toddler got ahold of it and broke the screen. Only reason I didn't get a new one or attempt to fix it is because LG got out of the phone business. If they weren't abandoning cell phones I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I have the Samsung S23 Ultra now and it feels like a downgrade in every aspect escept for the camera.
I had an lg wing and the experience in the video was not mine. Lg wing was a gem and I’m sad they shut down their phone department. I do have a question I want a wing again and I’m wondering how the updates are now. Is it still supported?
Few comments on the LG Wing: 4:00 The RUclips app used to work better with the LG Wing, it's the more recent version of the app that doesn't go from full screen back to the regular window size because RUclips made it so it auto maximizes video when a phone is horizontal, which is why it freaks out (it never used to). 4:17 It's not Google Maps, you're not using the 'LG Keyboard' that comes with the phone, it will go to the bottom screen if the phone is in Wing mode. 5:50 Same thing when using remote desktop with the 'LG Keyboard' you're using the 'Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard' it doesn't know to auto switch to the lower screen. Also another thing worth covering is that if you connect it to a USB Monitor you can use a full screen interface similar to Samsung's Dex interface (another reason why there's that track pad) 12:30 You're meant to use the on screen volume control by swiping down on the lower screen when the phone is in Wing mode rather than the physical buttons, also if you turn on the Always On Display a double tap on the screen will wake it rather than having to use the power button.

LG deserves massive respect for not only keeping headphone jacks, but also putting a quad dac in there to make it sound amazing. I miss their flagship series
I miss my G8 so much! I was forced to get this A52 5G because of 3G switch off, despite my G8 being 4G, they wouldn't accept it for some reason. I hate modern phones so much, this A52 "piece of crap" is so buggy, the fingerprint sensor sucks, I hate under the screen sensors, they're all terrible. I also tested their speed with the same app, this newer phone is half the speed of the G8. Phone companies are full of shit, they just want you to buy a new phone.
LG was the ONLY phone builder who refused to just accept the rectangle slab as the only acceptable form-factor and not only dared to try out new things, but also doing so with throwing its whole corporate weight behind those attempts. I really wish they would still be making phones.
LG offers Quad Dac in their flagships, DTS X 3D, Dual display, military standard build quality,ip68, OLED displays, custom skin but they won't preinstall any bloatware. Decent ram management, superb design and colours, glass+metalic finish, more importantly they didn't removed 3.5mm Jack except in LG Wing.LG is for innovations. Versatility, stands out in new unique things.
All respect for LG but I think the current form factor is still perfect in our time. The real thing that these manuf need to do is to make smaller and slimmer phones again like how Asus do with their phones and that luxury type phone from Xiaomi that is small and realistically designed for a human hand. Phones nowadays are as huge as a TV XD. It makes me cringe whenever I see a 4'11 human hold a giant phone. If I want a to watch on big screens, I have a TV and a dual monitor pc lmao
I loved LG. They had plenty of misses but they tried things that nobody else did. I miss their finger print reader / power button on the back in the perfect spot.
The last few generations of LG flagship phones (since the G8) are getting 3 OS updates instead of just 2 for older phones. My last two LG phones are two of them and they got their last update in September 2022
I did not realise that I have been lucky, my Wing has been ok. The fingerprint reader is not great, and second screen needs protective film to not scratch, but generally not any signifant software bugs. Only big bug is that if I move chrome to lower screen, half of the top screen stops responding touch. Chrome must be open using chrome icon on lower screen to top screen work ok.
I actually loved LG Phones and the way that they didnt give in to what a phone should be, But rather what a phone CAN be.. and i always respected that. They did phones others were to scared to do.
And that's why they suck harder at making mobile devices than ZTE... Standards exist for a reason and it's because they fucking work. Innovation is great, but not testing said innovation before release is the textbook definition of stupidity. LG's phone development is also the textbook definition of trash. Which is why they stopped developing phones.
The LG V60 was a beast of a phone. Had an amazing SD 865 processor, a huge 5000mA battery, 8gigs of ram, quad dac and 15w wireless charging. All it was missing was a 90 or 120hz display but that was it. LG should've toughed it out and stayed in the mobile phone market.
@@Cozzmy13 paired with a 60hz display, it was. I would've kept it had it not have charging port issues. I also got a great trade in value at T-Mobile. I forgot to mention it had micro SD support!
Honestly, while I also enjoyed LG’s phones, as someone that sold phones for many years, they just did horribly in the market (even with LG giving VERY generous incentives for selling their phones). I’m willing to bet they only covered R&D on most of the phones they released at best. Yeah, they definitely had their passionate fans, justifiably so, but there just weren’t enough for them to keep going. I mean why keep struggling to recoup costs when you are a market leader in other markets?
It's a beast NOW I'd say(given the low price you can get it for today). But it's specs were pretty standard for high end phones when it was released, and those other phones were getting 90HZ+ screens as well. The S20FE for example had the same specs pretty much, and a 120HZ screen and the v60 had a lower res screen than the V50. Still, it had that sweet dac, was pretty durable(except for the USB C being iffy for some people) and a decent battery. The camera software improved over time. It had that gimmicky second screen, some people liked that.
Shutout to the editor: taking the time to put those very real messages on screen, we appreciate it! Also I would love this kind of video every now and then, it's really nice to see the weird/bad tech that most of us will never otherwise experience
Actually, in the app drawer you can organize and delete applications more quickly, you just have to open the drawer, click on the three dots at the top right and touch where it says organize applications and that's it, you can freely move the apps apps and delete them without leaving the app drawer. 😊
A LG Wing user here; only the LG Keyboard opens on the bottom screen. And the waking/fingerprint/phone black screen issues came with the Android 13 update sadly. Besides that I agree mostly with your issues.
My favourite phone of all time is the LG G8. Still my daily driver. It was part of LGs "promised upgrades" set of phones AFTER the announced foreclosure. Truly great device today! A bit smaller than the V60, but has a beautiful QHD P-OLED display, Hi-fi Quad DAC (Producing the BEST audio quality and experience with a good pair of headphones), a 3.5 headphone jack, and Micro SD card support up to 2TB of external storage. I personally feel that phones are now regressing in some areas, removing features that were genuinely appreciated by many. I can't find any device that I can confidently say will replace the experience that I've gotten with my G8. Sony comes close with the 3.5mm headphone Jack and SD card support, but their flagship price is more than I'm willing to pay and they lack Quad Dacs. The Pixel 8 Pro seems interesting with the recent Pixel updates that were dropped a few days ago. For now, I'm going to keep rocking this timeless device! #LG
I just ordered a regular pixel 8 mainly because I'm absolutely sick of 6.7+" screen sizes. My gaming in the go is sudoku puzzles and brain games and if the screen feels to small I can always... Wait for it... Hold it closer to my face. Ive got fairly big hands but I've broken a lot of bones in my hand so those stretches get rather uncomfortable with a bigger phone.
It's sad that LG didn't get the recognition they deserved. Still daily driving my LG v60 and hope it will last a couple more years. I love the inbuilt DAC and the option to add a secondary screen with a case.
@@GH0STST4RSCR34M with LG phones you always had a pretty clean android experience with a couple of added LG apps. The update cycles could have been better though but that is a problem that most phone manufacturers share.
5:49 thats because you use 3rd party keyboard, the 1st party one from LG does show correctly on the bottom screen and emulating 3DS/DS games would be pretty cool on this... if the emulators had support :D
I really wish LG had been given a fair chance and that people would have voted for the LG V60 with the dual screen cover. It's fantastic and even has an audio jack.
As well as the ever-disappearing micro SD card slot expansion! You can carry the LG V60 around with a 1 TB micro SD card and use it as an external hard drive.
I kind of wanted Linus to get the Samsung xCover 6 Pro. It's drop-proof and waterproof. Comes with a headphone jack and microSD slot. It's modern in performance and features. Has 5-Year of support. Is actually built to be repairable. And has a stupidly long battery life, which can easily be doubled or tripled in a matter of seconds by hotswapping thanks to it's User Removable Battery. In my opinion, it is much better than the Fairphone 5. That won't age too well, making it's 7-Year support basically a moot point, unlike the Samsung.
@@ekintekoI just got the xcover6 pro as a work phone on Thursday. Haven't set it up yet since they aren't activating them until tomorrow, but this gives me hope since the phone it's replacing is the sonim xp8 running android 8 oreo, which was awful from the start 5 years ago.
I miss my LG G8X ThinQ with the Dual Screen. I accidently smashed it and has been wanting a new one ever since.I was given a crappy One Plus phone thats been giving me issues ever since I got it. I loved my LG I had an LG Since the LG G2.
Exactly! If you want to see true LG prowess, get a V60 ThinQ or even a G8X ThinQ. I'm currently watching this video on a G8X with my headphones plugged in the Quad DAC! Such a good phone.
Really happy you enjoyed your time with the Wing Linus! You should have asked some of us that have been using it for a while for all the tips and tricks, probably would have enjoyed it even more!
So glad that you are also testing the Fairphone. That's the one where I actually want to know your opionion because I am seriously considering switching to it from my very old phone. I was pretty disappointed that the Reddit trolls won out, but now I'm hopefull again.
Just consider what you do and look at the capabilities of different phones, the opinions of the reviewers shouldn't matter too much unless their usage aligns with yours. That's why I miss channels like Erica Griffin
My absolute favorite lg feature was the ability to control the volume of every app. A lot of games just allow you to turn sounds/music on or off. With my lg phones, I could turn them down so I could quietly hear the app while still being able to listen to podcasts.
Yea stock android has been having that feature since Android 11 if I can remember... it just falls on Samsung, Redmi etc to adopt that feature into their skin.
This phone was my everything. I had two of them for over 4 years totally and had to replace it with a mundane ass phone in April and my life has been changed for the worse ever since. I miss you Wing. RIP.
@@muddabuwshiI haven't had one since April, so I don't know what kind of things aren't supported etc etc That all goes much over my head. But I would absolutely still recommend this phone to anybody interested in it.
LG will be missed, they really don't bloat their phones too bad and they tried some interesting experiments like the Wing here. The V series holds a special place in my heart having had one in my pocket for nearly a decade at this point. Their no compromise approach to audio especially is what kept me coming back, and the V60's dual screen case pretty much succeeds in what the Wing here failed to deliver. I would love to see you guys take a look at them!
I was so hoping that they'd stick with it, because I could see the merit of the form factor. Sort of like Surface Pro 1, which was far from perfect, but M$ stuck with it and now its probably the best of both world tablet/laptop on the market.
That's the problem they experimented with and moved on they needed to actually stick with something I really really loved their LG G3 and it's laser focus camera
As an active Wing user I can understand a lot of the complaints. I have workarounds for many of them but that doesn't make it any better of a phone. I love it and am willing to put up with the quirks. Even the ones Linus didn't find in his time using it. And as someone who runs their phones into the ground (I used a Pixel 1 before the Wing) I'll be happy to live with my Wing until it gives up on life and I boomerang it into the sunset.
I find it great to ssh into servers for maintenance. The stock keyboard shifts to the bottom display and I get the full top display to see terminal readouts.
During the G2 and G3 era, LG was years ahead of everyone else on ergonomics and design, it's amazing how fast they lost that lead before completely burning their phones division to the ground :(
It only happened because reviewers were paid by Samsung to push their phone and absolutely shit on LG. All these "tech influencer" were the reason LG died and they aren't sorry
One of the issue was that LG never did proper marketing for their mobile lineups. Which is why they didn't get enough attention. And since there weren't a lot of users there weren't a big recognition that LG made good phones. So it became more of an enthusiast phone. But man I love the Quad DAC they have on the G7 and V35. It sounds so good with mid tier earbuds or headphones.
@@milesfarber I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, for what it's worth my two G3 worked perfectly (got another one after the first one was stolen, that's living in Argentina for you). I got a friend who used iPhones at the time to also buy one after being impressed by the phone.
Hold it the other way for reading. The top phone in portait, the bottom phone for the video. That way you have a whole phone as a phone, and a second mini monitor. Holding it in a T is just wrong for most tasks.
I'm really excited to hear the thoughts on the Fairphone 5 in a month or two. The phone's already pretty expensive, so I can't really justify/afford paying a huge amount in customs too, but it is very appealing! Sad that they took away the headphone jack though - here's hoping they don't also remove the microSD tray with the 6.
Murena sells fairphones in the US, so you dont have to import them, and they said that they're working on getting the fairphone 5. They do come with their degoogled android ROM but you can always roll back to stock android.
@@Bassquake76The point of the phone is to be an eco friendly alternative to mainstream phones. Most new phones don't have headphone jacks because they create issues with waterproofing and packaging. It sucks, but the headphone jack is far from a dealbreaker. Just stick a dongle on your headphones and move on with your life.
@@z0phi3l It helps to think about it this way: the fairphone has the right price to performance ratio, and other companies just give you a "slave labor" discount and the "fuck the environment" discount and so on
LG Wing user here! I absolutely love this phone! I do want to note that only the stock LG Keyboard works as intended with the secondary screen. If you download Gboard it will not work how you want it to Linus! You goof lol. Glad you got to experience this phone! Regardless if it was more negative for you.
9:46 The notifications barging in first thing in the morning or first use of the phone in let's say... 8 hours happens on my Samsung S20 Ultra as well. Makes me question if it's just an Android thing entirely. Focus and DND is not enabled, so makes me thing it does it as a courtesy thing, or as a battery-saving thing
Its an android thing. has happened on every single android phone ive had and never happened once on any of my iPhones. Its one of the biggest reasons I dont do android anymore. Nothing like picking up my phone after a few hours to see ive missed a crapload of texts, emails and notifications.
The last LG phone I had was the G4 and it was the best phone there was at the time. They did really user friendly stuff, like adding a very very minor vertical curve length-wise that made it easier to use as a phone! The double tap to wake I believe also was born on this phone, too. Industry changing. I really really loved LG
The buttons on the back of the phone was pretty cool. I had a g2 and g3 or 4 I think, I had 2 generations of them. LG made some good shit back in the day
Mine too I loved it so much, great camera, great controls, user replaceable battery, if I could just swap a board in there with larger storage and a more powerful chip I'd still be using it today
@@txcforever yeah some of the earlier revisions used really cheap solder that would crack under the chips and when that happened the phone would stop working. They eventually fixed this and mine wasn't affected but it was a pretty big deal at the time
Man, these sponsor spots, absolute pieces of art, thanks. Also the LG Wing was def a phone I wanted, back when LG still made phones (it was expensive as heck, though).
Linus you know the internet. This is exactly what was going to happen. The community cannot be trusted. I hope lesson learned, but I bet a similar thing is going to happen again
I don't watch Linus because he knows the internet. I watch Linus because he knows the internet and still manages to repeatedly get trolled. Quality stuff.
Funny how almost every problem with multitasking he had is solved on Surface Duo. But LG at least have been patching and updating their phone which Microsoft don't anymore.
7:35 You may need to recalibrate your Wing's proximity sensor via the service menu. I had this problem too, and thankfully going in the service menu to recalibrate the sensor worked for me.
What was really lovely is the reference to the Linus vs Dennis PC Build Simulator video, where Dennis insisted that thermal paste belonged in the socket.
Bashing on a 4 year old phone by a company that doesn't make phones anymore.... You do realize that LG was the only company that made phones for audiophiles affordable.... I gotta say that this is a effing cheap shot at a company that already decided to no longer make mobile phones...
From my experience, the keyboard always showed on the bottom screen, just you had to use the LG keyboard, that seems to be worthy sacrifice for me, and if you ever wanted to change it back to GBoard, there's a dedicated button to do so if you don't use gestures for navigation, still worthy trad of by my experience. But yeah it's slower than I'd like and buggier than even my V40 before this, but I can't help, but love it for what it's worth. Only thing I hate about it, is absence of 3.5mm jack, what was always highlight about LG phones :(
Its a good production, but I wonder if the sponsor is really going to get their money's worth. People watching this channel are likely to be the people who enjoy making their own PCs and tinkering with them.
@@smalltime0 well not everyone does that when he gets older. Sometimes you just pay the extra bucks to build the PC for you. That ain't me, but there are enough people out there that think that way. If i had to build a PC for someone related that aren't my parents i would do it that way so I'm not 100% tech support.
@@smalltime0 Well, it depends. I can see some videos being watched by non-tech people that would buy a build-redux machine. Not this video though. But the secret shopper would be a perfect video for this ad.
All the other major electronics manufacturers owe a LOT to LG. Even 10 years ago, LG's IPS LCD panels still kick the ass of many OLED/AMOLED panels of today. Apple's award for best smart phone screen was made by LG. Sony's most expensive OLED tvs, the master bravia are using LG's display panels. LG (may or may not have invented) but were the first smartphones to use double tap to wake/sleep...something still to be adopted by most other manufacturers.
So many people have forgotten that LG got LCD to truly rival OLED right before they switched to OLED. Many people don't know what a high end LCD looks like.
Ah, picture in picture. It's always interesting seeing how my youtube app automatically applies it when I'm in the US, without downloading any updates, and then losing it again when I go back home.
Should've had the LG V60 with the extra screen as a option. Killer phone still being used today. Also, double tap to wake was an LG first. Heck, i still use my LG V40 and a pair of Peerless Audio Status Between Pro ear buds which uses the aptX codec and has basically the best sound through BT 5.2. And yes Lenny, the V40 is nicer than the Joke 9. I just opened a brand new LG V60 and just like all the V-series, they can push a pair of 600Ω Sennheiser HD800's which is due to the 2Vrms 3.5mm headphone jack with ESS SABRE's 32bit qDAC to clean up the audio. Especially FLAC files and mvk. for video. Also, the USB-c to HDMI comes in handy. I could go on and on about the right LG phone. Like i said before. The LG V40 is still serving me well. With some Status audio with the V-series is a match made in heaven. The V-series supports all audio and video codecs. Plus LG's stock music app is the best period. It changes color depending on the album of the artist so no 2 artists ambient background look the same. These phones also have MLT-STD 810G/H, so they can take a drop or hit. Plus the cold has no effect on V-series phones. My Note 20 Ultra 5 kept bootlooping in -15°c weather. How ironic....lmao. I pulled out the V40 and had no issues. GPS accuracy is immaculate. Just check out the V40's (or all V-series) GPS test on GSMarena
Well thing is the whole phone selection thing became a joke. LG V60 would be at least better since it was a flagship device. May not be all great in modern standards but at least less compromise than LG Wing.
Honestly the Wing could have been much better if LG didn't give up on phones soon after it launched. Just having the keyboard on the second screen would have been very useful.
Yeah Linus complained about the power button but didn't turn on the always on display option to double tap to wake, also they didn't use the LG Keyboard that automatically knows which screen to use for the keyboard, Linus was using the Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard, which is why it kept appearing on the top screen regardless of the Wing's mode.
@@wedge9t You'll learn a lot of LTT phone reviews (mostly on Short Circuit now) especially where Linus is the reviewer will be hardstuck in his preferred ways of Galaxy Note 9 and not how each company handles gestures/shortcuts/features. He complains phone can't do X when it does have the feature tied to a different method of calling that feature. IE. Pixel 8 photo camera swapping he complains you can't swipe up but on pixels you simply twist/shake.
My problem with these kind of designs, from the days of clamshell phones, is that they have a flex cable permanently moving. And that means they have a limited life, because we know how godawful hard is to repair a phone for the regular user. Looking forward for mandatory replaceable batteries too.
After this I would really love to see you daily drive the FairPhone! Edit: Love that he’s actually doing this! Excited for more content on the Fairphone!
LG was kinda the last company to still make janky innovative phones and I think that's one of the reasons that made them to stop making phones I had a LG X Screen as my first Smartphone and I absolutely loved it, it was one of the coolest things ever to have a separate task bar from your main screen or even controlling the music with the main screen being off
I had an LG G4 back in the day and I've missed the rear-mounted buttons on every single phone I've had since. That thing was just the best, RIP to a real one.
I love using youtube music in the smaller screen and then using the top screen normally. When i want to change the song i swivel the second screen out and toggle then shut it again as if i was opening and closing a second tab. I also like you can use the front and back camera at the same time, as well as moving the camera view left right up down in gimbal mode without moving the hand at all, its super smooth. Its also great for using the top screen in landscape mode for twitch with the screen ans chat in the top screen and keyboard on the bottom screen. I also love it for business where i can load reference photos on one screen and then the items im placing an order for on the other. I also like loading youtube instrumentals on one screen and writing to them in notepad on the other. I hate pic in pic mode and i love the Wing for ADHD reasons too. This guy is complaining about the keyboard covering up the top screen in landscape mode but thats because he hasnt set it to appear in the bottom screen. It would also fix the pin pad problem. He just needed to configure the keyboard properly to fix that. If youre having rattling issues you can tighten it and this phone is super easy to take apart and replace screens etc.
I bought a LG V10 when they first came out, and absolutely loved that phone. The little top screen was actually useful, you could easily change the battery, and the back of the phone was grippy and allowed the phone to stay where you put it - unlike today's phones where you look at them funny and the slide off whatever they are on and break unless you have a case. I retired the V10 after a couple years when I bought a Samsung Note8 - and gave the V10 to a coworker with a new battery. He used it for another 3-4 years before it finally died. I currently have a Pixel 7 which I do like, but I think my favorite phone to date was that V10.
LG V60 is actually a great phone. It's definitely worth a try if you can find it for a great price. You can get a dual-screen case for it and it has amazing specs for a cheap price right now.
The concept of this phone reminds me a lot of my first phone: the Samsung Juke. The screen flipped out in the same way but went 180 degrees, exposing the keypad and controls. I heard from other kids my age that these things got broken all the time. I’ve always been careful with my stuff and I still never trusted that thing. I was very happy to move to an iPhone 4.
Hey, I'm a fan of Dennis doing these segues. It's a great use of his unique and imaginative style. This goes for the WAN show sponsor slots as well! Pretty fun, give the man a raise!
I was actually seriously tempted by the Wing, having Plex play on the top screen and Waze on the bottom. Ended up getting the Velvet for the headphone jack and the potential of a dual screen case that I never was able to get.
@@krZabii you're not exactly watching, unless you have a custom super-cruise control (LOL!). But you can have a movie on with the hearing-impaired audio, play music videos, audiobooks, or long-form YT videos. I mainly do this for long road trips.

When you get a new android update.. Until you unlock the phone it doesn't give you notifications. That isn't just an LG thing.. It happens on my S23 Ultra as well
The two big issues with LG were..inability to see new concepts through (they often dropped them after 1 year) and the ignoring of the g4 fiasco. LG had vision but no long term follow through. Still miss my v20 with the 2nd ticker screen.
Yeah. The moment something didn't make a big bang they dropped it. That is not how you succeed. They were like a team getting a new coach and firing the previous every few months.
The LG Wing was actually such a fantastic phone. I loved it. I wish there were more innovative devices like it. Especially from someone who actually would have taken care of the software for it. I used the hell out of the inner display for so many things. It kept me super productive all of the time. Texting while watching videos, maps and music while driving, coordinating pokemon go raids on discord while playing the game back when I still played that trash, and so much more. Ngl, a lot of the hardware issues I never personally had. I got mine near launch as well. So it's very unusual that you had so many issues. The inner display dust scratches are easily combated by a screen protector. The screen rippling I don't see on my old 2 year daily driver Wing. The wobbling I honestly enjoyed because it was a great fidget sound even though its super bad for the hardware lol. The mono speaker and volume button locations were bad. The Wing had a better finger print scanner than the Samsung Folds for me. I could put in any finger print at any angle on the Wing. The Fold 4 I have to be prefectly oriented and situated on that little bar. Even a micrometer off kilter and it locks to the pass code fully. I prefer the Fold overall. But I wish someone more competent would have made the Wing. I got tons of questions about the Wing and told how cool it was all the time. The Fold, everyone knows and they are basically a slab of glass phone with extra style. I love my Fold, but the Wing had more wow factor.
The LG G3 was the best phone I ever had (also because of the awesome modding community!) I still use it for MFA apps (switched to a Shiftphone 6mq as daily driver)
Ahh yes with a cpu that would over heat so bad that it would reflow itself and cause the screen to die. [I own one and had to fix the issue for so long]
I loved my G3, but was glad to move on to the Nexus 6. The stock Android experience at the time was miles ahead of lg or Samsung bloatware. But I did love the back buttons for vr headsets as they wouldn't press down when clamped in.

So people can stop talking about it like it's the best thing on the market just because of some marketing bullshit that will take years of use and testing to prove otherwise and will most likely fail in the process because of poor design choices in durability, resistance and performance. Hopefully the great idea of the Fairphone can be better executed in the future.
I use this phone daily. I got it since LG was getting out of phones and I've always loved their sorta gimmicky phones. I like using the Wing to take notes on google docs for my classes. I've had zero problems with the fingerprint reader though (even with a very cracked screen). I have mine on a timer to restart every weekend to deal with the update issues. My complaints are not enough apps support the unique screen orientation and that no one made a case that can swivel and protect the main screen :(
This phone looks hilarious. Also, really excited to see you'll be covering the Fairphone 5. I've been using a Fairphone 4 for about half a year now and I love it. Their philosophy and the repairability are so, so important. And I personally put CalyxOS on mine and I've been using it with little issues. Very satisfied with it, and Fairphone deserves a lot more love.
Oh man, I've been daily driving an LG V60 since it's release (right before the Wing) and it's been 98% wonderful. I'm thinking a lot of the issues come down to the wing software, since I don't have any of those issues. The biggest issue was the Android 11 update made the device slooooow, but 12 fixed that issue
Bro I had a V30 for years until I decided to get a V50 like 2 years ago and 2 weeks after I received the V50 the screen got broken so I kept using the V30 until a month ago .......it held up really well ...no major complains
as an LG V60 user some of these problems are also on that device, the fingerprint sensor is sometimes infuriating... other then that I'm mostly happy with it but looking at probably upgrading in 2024
I love/hate my V60, but the love is intense enough that I'm not getting a new phone until it dies, and even then I might get another secondhand one just for music. But oh my god, the fingerprint sensor is such a step down from the V30. The underscreen sensor is inferior in every way to the back-of-the-phone sensor on the V30. I'd happily sacrifice the wireless charging on the V60 to have the V30 sensor back.
@@Churchgrimm The LG G8X is a slightly smaller version of the V60 but has a fingerprint reader on the back of the phone. The cameras are a bit of a downgrade on the back, but the front camera is BETTER than the one on the V60 weirdly enough. a 32 MP camera for the Selfie camera versus the 10MP on the V60.
Please make a video on the Fairphone 5. The Fairphone company is pretty awesome. They have improved so much over the years. The have long term software support for their phones. For example, giving the Fairphone 2 software updates for 5 actual android versions(Android 5 - Android 10) They even release their fanacial statement to be extra transparent.
I have an LG V50 and it got verry buggy after the last update. This is probably also what happened to the wing. My V50 was awesome till LG pushed out the last update. It's sad that LG stopped making phones they ware great most of the time. Edit; My Bugs are Gallery draining battery in the background. Fingerprint scanner doesn't respond for 20sek. Aod moving so far the the right it only shows the hour. Android Auto sometimes refused. Cellular didn't connect after 3-5 days Wi-Fi usage.
@@mugenfiji0327My dad inherited my V30 it worked perfectly and still does, My v50 worked perfectly till the last update. I also had a G5 that broke it's screen from falling on the wooden floor from a couch.
@@Kitulous No, no they didn't. Once again, LG has never once made a good phone. Not one single time. Live in your delusional fantasy world if you want, but your opinion doesn't change facts...
Definitely a huge shame the LG fell out of the smart phone game. Their modular dual screen cases for the g8 and v60 (and others) were actually pretty sweet. Certainly a gimmick to some extent as the average person would barely use them, but the ability to switch back to a standard single screen was king and a far better implementation than the Samsung folds. No creases or finicky hardware to worry about.
I prefer the fold in this regard. With the LG method using both screens and one big screen was less fluid. You had a chunky bezel in the middle. That's far worse than the crease.
My wing is 2nd hand from a colleague, and most of Linus' issues are the same on mine - the scratches from the dust are especially annoying. But, my fingerprint works essentially every time, even after a shower with my hands still damp it works. Mine has no screen ripples? Don't really know if these were common or not. My screen while open rocks as he shows, but when closed and typing - is solid. In all honesty though, the main feature of the phone I use the like once every week. I got mine for £120 and was a huge hardware upgrade from my Pixel 3a so I'm sure someone who comes from Folds and other top tier phones can feel its shortcomings much more easily.
I actually have an LG Wing that I won for free at the beginning of the year. I've been dailying it ever since. It has some interesting quirks with the software, including the fact that I can't get to my app drawer if I unlock the phone from the AOD instead of pressing the power button first. And yeah, lots of apps don't work on the second screen. But I actually love to use the swivel mode for RUclips just as a comfortable way to one-hand the phone and still watch in full screen. I've also discovered that it's kinda fun to use in swivel mode with the large screen vertical and holding the small screen off to the side, if you want to double app with something like Instagram reels. Unfortunately my phone is carrier locked and I am stuck back on A10. But maybe that's a good thing because I haven't experienced almost any of these issues in the video. I have to say, maybe it's not the best phone, but it's just got a really nice overall feel, and the cool factor is off the charts (at least in my eyes.) I love showing it off to people and seeing them freak out. I keep thinking about switching phones to get updates and a smaller, lighter phone, but I always end up staying with it. RIP LG, you were the only original ones in a sea of glass rectangles
I can see it being kind of cool if Drastic DS Emulator works on it where you can have controls on either side of what would be the top display instead of the bottom like a regular DS
I am 90% sure Drastic doesn't support that second screen. And it definitely won't get any updates to support it. Drastic didn't get an update for 3 years straight then it got a scoped storage update in January. It will be another 3 years before it gets another update
I REALLY wanted an LG wing, but it was like double my budget so I ended up with a OnePlus 7t Pro. It's also a cool phone but I'd love to have a wing sometime
I use an LG Wing as a daily driver and i havent had hardly any of the problems linus mentions. Theres a setting to make the keyboard open on the bottom screen and you can add and remove easy access buttons like hotspot
I have been using the LG Wing since a year after release and I enjoy it. I especially enjoy having two screens, a pop up camera (so its not always staring at you), and an EXPANDABLE STORAGE SLOT (which is very rare these days). Also, it takes great pictures ;p
I was a person who used LG back from the g6 and the OG stylo series and had quite a few of their phones. They weren't always the most up-to-date with their processors and hardware, but their design philosophies and the way that they made phones that were unique was always a really cool thing to me. Before the foldable phones and stuff came along and became the way they are today, they had the LG g8x, which came with a dual-screen accessory that was essentially a case that fit around the body of the phone to add an extra inner screen. It used the USB-C port to power the extra inner display and smaller outer display that could show the time and notification icons when the device was closed. They also had one for the V60, which was the phone that I had, and I believe the last phone they made that was officially sold in the US (correct me if I'm wrong). They essentially made a "folding phone", and to be honest, it was really cool, but finding a use for the accessory was difficult as to me the fact that it wasn't a singular display that folds in the middle kind of made it harder to find uses for it as well. I think the thing that sent LG under was the fact that they'd throw their whole company at these devices, but because they weren't as popular as the Samsung or Google phones, it was really hard to get the software support needed to really make those phones come to life, which is really a shame. They had their own proprietary apps and whatnot but you could uninstall them and I don't ever really recall them installing your phone with a bunch of bloatware from the bat out of all of my time using them. I think they treated their customers well in their time in the industry, but because they weren't pulling the apple and Samsung marketing stuff they just didn't get as far with the general consumer population and therefore didn't get backed up enough by all of the app developers because realistically with how little people used these niche devices and accessories there wasn't really a reason to put a whole lot of effort into making sure they worked perfectly all the time. All-in-all, I'm glad you stuck to your word and used it for a month, I personally would've recommended a v60 because at least the dual screen accessory would have been similar to your previous daily driver, but I think showing off the last phone they ever produced to the masses is a really cool thing since they didn't really get a huge spotlight over here in North America. Quick Edit after the fact: In all of their phones I don't think they ever removed the headphone jack ONCE, despite the fact that a lot of the major players were doing it, and they also really, really cared about the quality of the features they had when it came to their more "basic" phones. I really think the wing was one of the harsher ones because honestly it's just a really difficult form factor to work with. It's really a shame that they had to leave the industry, but I also feel like sometimes they tried too hard to make these new innovations/gimmicks when they could've kept making more of their good, more budget friendly devices with quality headphone jacks, displays and software.
You're welcome, Linus.

@@xPandamon their normal phones were quite nice, I still daily my G8s thinq. The only thing that I'd complain about after 3 years is the dying battery

It really gets a bad rap considering how great it is.
correct
LG wing is goated. the phone is amazing. His review almost seems like it came from a hater before he even got the phone and wanted to hate it. I as well used the phone for 2 years. I'd still have it if it wasn't for the fact my toddler got ahold of it and broke the screen. Only reason I didn't get a new one or attempt to fix it is because LG got out of the phone business. If they weren't abandoning cell phones I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I have the Samsung S23 Ultra now and it feels like a downgrade in every aspect escept for the camera.
As a wing owner, half of the stuff mentioned in this video is BS.
I had an lg wing and the experience in the video was not mine. Lg wing was a gem and I’m sad they shut down their phone department. I do have a question I want a wing again and I’m wondering how the updates are now. Is it still supported?
@@brian530 for now yes, but it seems like it will soon end
Few comments on the LG Wing:
4:00 The RUclips app used to work better with the LG Wing, it's the more recent version of the app that doesn't go from full screen back to the regular window size because RUclips made it so it auto maximizes video when a phone is horizontal, which is why it freaks out (it never used to).
Also another thing worth covering is that if you connect it to a USB Monitor you can use a full screen interface similar to Samsung's Dex interface (another reason why there's that track pad)
12:30 You're meant to use the on screen volume control by swiping down on the lower screen when the phone is in Wing mode rather than the physical buttons, also if you turn on the Always On Display a double tap on the screen will wake it rather than having to use the power button.

That battery must have lasted for days. 865 was very power efficient.
Until it started to crap itself the V20 was nice and had replaceable batteries. Also dual Sim and microsd.
Shutout to the editor: taking the time to put those very real messages on screen, we appreciate it!
Also I would love this kind of video every now and then, it's really nice to see the weird/bad tech that most of us will never otherwise experience

They took away the headphone jack?? I thought the whole point of the phone was to be a worthy alternative?
@@Bassquake76The point of the phone is to be an eco friendly alternative to mainstream phones. Most new phones don't have headphone jacks because they create issues with waterproofing and packaging. It sucks, but the headphone jack is far from a dealbreaker. Just stick a dongle on your headphones and move on with your life.
Simple review: Overpriced, underpowered
The G4 was my favourite phone, and the V20 was a close 2nd
The buttons on the back of the phone was pretty cool. I had a g2 and g3 or 4 I think, I had 2 generations of them. LG made some good shit back in the day
Mine too I loved it so much, great camera, great controls, user replaceable battery, if I could just swap a board in there with larger storage and a more powerful chip I'd still be using it today
Wasn't the G4 infamous for dying out of the blue due to a hardware issue?
@@txcforever yeah some of the earlier revisions used really cheap solder that would crack under the chips and when that happened the phone would stop working. They eventually fixed this and mine wasn't affected but it was a pretty big deal at the time
Man, these sponsor spots, absolute pieces of art, thanks.
Also the LG Wing was def a phone I wanted, back when LG still made phones (it was expensive as heck, though).

Funny how almost every problem with multitasking he had is solved on Surface Duo. But LG at least have been patching and updating their phone which Microsoft don't anymore.

I really liked the ad spot with Sarah and Dennis. I would love to see more ads with other people from the team!
7:35 You may need to recalibrate your Wing's proximity sensor via the service menu. I had this problem too, and thankfully going in the service menu to recalibrate the sensor worked for me.
That sponsor segment was absolutely amazing, love the running gag
What was really lovely is the reference to the Linus vs Dennis PC Build Simulator video, where Dennis insisted that thermal paste belonged in the socket.
5:16 😂 "it's now out of fashion to be able to copy part of a text" XD I feel that, really one of the fashion trends along the removal barrel jack
Only thing I hate about it, is absence of 3.5mm jack, what was always highlight about LG phones :(
The LG V60 has a headphone jack with a Quad DAC and micro SD card storage. You can also get a dual-screen case for the LG V60.
muh customization
Dennis is a mad genius! Those sponsor spots where THE best!
Its a good production, but I wonder if the sponsor is really going to get their money's worth.

That screen wobble when closed is physical haptic when typing.
My problem with these kind of designs, from the days of clamshell phones, is that they have a flex cable permanently moving. And that means they have a limited life, because we know how godawful hard is to repair a phone for the regular user. Looking forward for mandatory replaceable batteries too.

Dennis was the one behind them, I suspect.
If only all ads on youtube would be like this. Maybe then they would stop having adblocker issues
LG was kinda the last company to still make janky innovative phones and I think that's one of the reasons that made them to stop making phones
I had a LG X Screen as my first Smartphone and I absolutely loved it, it was one of the coolest things ever to have a separate task bar from your main screen or even controlling the music with the main screen being off
Happy to deliver
Wild that they left out the headphone jack. That was the one thing LG users never complained about... I miss my quad DAC so much
I had an LG G4 back in the day and I've missed the rear-mounted buttons on every single phone I've had since.
If youre having rattling issues you can tighten it and this phone is super easy to take apart and replace screens etc.
i really hope we get a update on the experience with the fairphone 5
You can get a dual-screen case for it and it has amazing specs for a cheap price right now.
because it was an obvious troll, i think they should give the fairphone a chance as an honorable mention

Yeah, my G3 was a furnace unlike anything I've seen before haha
@snjert8406 in the summer I had to put those phones in the fridge😂 was always buying new batteries to try find one with better efficiency
LG is definitely a company that deserves respect for how innovative they were.
@@ThatDroid I just applied the "thermal hack" (applying a thin thermal pad) pretty early and had no overheating issues. My RAM still died tho, I then bought a used G3 and transferred it's logic board, which is the device I still use today. And I'm glad he will.
Happy to see Dennis more! That dude is hilarious.
Looking to upgrade to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
@@Churchgrimm The LG G8X is a slightly smaller version of the V60 but has a fingerprint reader on the back of the phone. Those miniclips and especially the sponsor parts realy spiced up the video for me 😊❤❤❤❤
Definitely a huge shame the LG fell out of the smart phone game.
@@thisnowthenWhy wouldn't it? DraStic works fine on the Galaxy Fold, and even supports using a separate 2nd screen over HDMI.
Can confirm that drastic will not run across both screens on the wing but does work fine across both screens on the v60 or g8x

i had hotspot on the quick notification menu in my lgv20 running up to android 9.0.
I have been using the LG Wing since a year after release and I enjoy it. I especially enjoy having two screens, a pop up camera (so its not always staring at you), and an EXPANDABLE STORAGE SLOT (which is very rare these days). Also, it takes great pictures ;p
Everyone laugh at this guy
I wonder if the third party apps issues were due to app versions that no longer supported the depreciated form factor
