I realize this is an old video but I fell like chiming in. MacOS did something similar. When they switched from classic to Unix based, they went from OS9 to OSX. From that point MacOSX was a brand new product and all updates were prefixed by 10. You could have easily called them OSX 1-15 instead but they wanted to keep the image of evolution of the Mac brand. (Until macOS rename and then os11 changed things.) So the X name signified a new product line with both MacOS and iPhone. Considering the 8 and the X came out at the same time this makes even more sense. Really the iPhones without a home button are all iPhone X and ones with the home button are non X. (So that new 13 is really a X3 since the X was an X0.)
Technically, If iPhone 3G is iPhone 2, iPhone 3GS is actually iPhone 2s since the 6 and 6s were from 2 consecutive generations but still numbered with the same number.

I realize this is an old video but I fell like chiming in. MacOS did something similar. When they switched from classic to Unix based, they went from OS9 to OSX. From that point MacOSX was a brand new product and all updates were prefixed by 10. You could have easily called them OSX 1-15 instead but they wanted to keep the image of evolution of the Mac brand. (Until macOS rename and then os11 changed things.)
So the X name signified a new product line with both MacOS and iPhone. Considering the 8 and the X came out at the same time this makes even more sense. Really the iPhones without a home button are all iPhone X and ones with the home button are non X. (So that new 13 is really a X3 since the X was an X0.)

Technically, If iPhone 3G is iPhone 2, iPhone 3GS is actually iPhone 2s since the 6 and 6s were from 2 consecutive generations but still numbered with the same number.
