6:40 Surprised I got caught out by this, I knew the depth and monochrome were useless but didn't know about the 2MP Macro. I tested out what MKBHD said just now with my phone and zooming 2x with the normal camera is significantly better than using the macro, was wondering why Xiaomi hid away the macro option in the settings. At least I didn't buy the phone because of the macro camera, so not a big bummer for me

The concept of baking ads into a UI honestly makes me sick to my stomach at this point, knowing that literally every company would be hungry to do that if we let it slide even once. Ew.

Yes, it's a dangerous road to head towards. Aggressive advertising from which there is no escape ☹️ I think most who could would rather pay a bit more for the privilege of an ad free UI! If anything, perhaps the company could offer money off for anyone happy with the ads. But just be honest upfront! Choice is the best option for all😀👍
You can easily turn off all Ads on MIUI, I have turned off all ads on my Redmi Note 10

Got a Motorola One Vision, and it was bought in 2019. Quite happy with it, didnt cost a ton and is quite reliable.
I've dropped it down stairs, on tiled floors, concrete floors, out of a moving forklift, kicked it into a concrete wall by accident, thrown it out the window in my sleep.
It has seen some abuse, and still works. No cracks on it, but might have to wash the rubber/silikone case it came with.

Its going to take quite some time for materials tech to get to the point that batteries, power distribution, processing, circuitry, etc.. will be optically transparent enough to be considered equal to or better than the cameras and screen resolutions currently available. I do think, however, that most of the internals will be able to be scaled down to a point that they could fit into the small area between the border at the bottom of the screen and actual bottom edge of the phone. Then combine that with an optically transparent lcd screen(which im assuming is already technically feasible or not to far off) and you could probably have a phone you could use as an AR viewer of sorts, but I'd bet that the market would be more likely to throw money at a phone that has juiced up graphics drivers and pair that with affordable glasses that use the cool transparent screen technology instead of a phone with cool transparent screen technology.
I had a Dell Stream 5, the EU version got the android 2.2 update. The American AT&T version got stuck at 1.6.
I rooted it and got the 2.2 stock on it and it was great.
Dell and AT&T did not know how to market it correctly, they ran ads with people doing spreadsheets and word processing and doing business related applications.
They would have had a winner if they advertised it as an entertainment phone for gaming and watching videos etc which the European rom focused on.
That could have been a really great fun phone if it was marketed correctly.

Becouse they had a different idea, there always will be a company that revolutionizes a certan industry 🙂 just look at the car industry USA car manifacturers where on top from 1900 to ~1980... chevrolett, ford etc... bmw and audi and a lot of famous car brands like lamborghini ferrari etc where almost closed down (if not have been bought by other companies) the vw group came back and now its #1 and when you ask somebody about premium sedans the forst 3 brands are audi/mercedes/bmw all of these companies where struggling when some of the american brands where swimming in money. Bmw was saved by the 3 series and audi was by volkswagen, but back in the day if you where to say audi or bmw is going to sell more cars than for example chevrolett people would laugh at you.. this is the way of life... excuse my english

Haha, I was working in Samsung when the beam came around. I was testing it's software and was able to carry it with me home. It was quite an amazing gimmick being able to project music videos outdoors, movies or just RUclips. The only downside was battery live.

I just find that crazy!
Luckily it wasn’t practical tho. You needed specific lighting, close distance and thin fabric to be able to have slight x-ray vision. It would’ve been such a safety concern and disaster if they perfected the technology.

If ads being baked into a phone is 4/10, I can't wait to see what's worse than that.
I guess it might be phones with targeted ads or ones with "Nick Click"-esque cameras.
If you don t know what the Nick Click is, it's a 1999 Nickelodeon-themed digital camera that gave photo outputs that made even the photos taken from early camera phones look like they were taken from a DSLR camera in comparison. Basically the picture would have the resolution of a GameBoy Game, and you can print them out onto a full sheet of paper, making them look like pixelated nightmares.
Some websites have so many video ads they make my phone overheat so id imagine if people didnt make a clear stance eventually all phones would have ads and that is really not the business.
The really sad reason it isn't a bigger number is because they haven't fully failed yet, ads are still going.
Xiaomi isn't the only one doing it. Samsung jumped on the shitwagon too. Samsung stock apps have ads baked in, and I've had to replace all the stock ones with 3rd party apps on my Note 8.
I have no ads on my Xiaomi phone since I disabled them all , it's not that big of an issue

Im a student and I have a Xiaomi Redmi note 9 pro, and I dont mind the adds because theres no way I could afford any other phone with the specs it has, so I think the adds are fine as a trade off because my phone is the best I've ever had. That being said if I had a full time job, I'd probably pay the extra for no adds. But right now broke me is saying I dont care because my phone is brilliant

Have the Moto Z Mods been mentioned yet? It was a cool concept. Using a series of magnets and pins, you could attach different devices to the back of your phone. There was a camera, a game controller, a projector, a polaroid instant printer, a 360 camera, swappable battery packs, and a few others. What failed was the price of most of those mods costing equal to or more than an equivalent standalone device. It also limited innovation in future Z series phones because they had to fit the shape of the mods. Motorola promised 4 years of support, they delivered 4 years of support, then dropped it.
Then Apple marketed magnetic attachments as a bold new concept...
I loved my moto z play. It was a good phone until you wanted to take photos. But yeah the mods were a bit overpriced. I did end up with an battery pack and the projector. Though I got those at sale prices
@@AquariumThoughts Same here. Got two different battery pack, the projector, and the 360 camera. The camera was included with the Z4, and I did get some good use out of it. The battery packs were the real winners though. Just being able to swap on a new one was so much better than portable batteries.
My dad got a Yotaphone for free from a friend. It was a really cool phone, but it was a bit slow compared to the iPhone 5S, and the kindle-like back is quite unresponsive. However the phone's packaging was extremely high-end.
I had a teacher that owned a Samsung Beam. He used to show slides in our classroom (I went to a public school that was nice but sometimes the projector just didnt work) and it worked surprisingly well for a phone. I remember being very impressed when he just took a projector out of his pocket.

I wish HTC could make a comeback. The best phone I ever had(relative to other phones on the market) was the HTC mytouch 4g. Never had any problems or issues not caused by me. I did break the charging port by accidently using the wrong cord and HTC sent me a replay for free. It had an amazing camera and survived many drops and a couple dips in the pool. Still worked like a champ.
I kinda miss the old 90s/2000s Nokia "pre touchscreen" days sometimes, I had a 7110 for many years. The N95 8GB was my last one before move to touch screens.
Never liked the flip style such Motorola Razr, I did much prefere the slide keyboard like 7110 and N95.
I still have all my old Nokia phones, they work eccept the N70, its screen went crazy.
BlackBerry made some big fails too, otherwise they would still be around. I am surprised you didn't mention that brand.

The biggest smartphone fail that I know of is the original Samsung Galaxy S. It was advertised as having a GPS, but the GPS was absolute garbage. It simply was not a functioning unit. And, like the 2-megapixel smartphone camera, Samsung had to know this when the product was released. I am surprised there wasn't some kind of recall or lawsuit about this. I still want my money back for that phone.
Also, Vine was absolutely wonderful. Freaking hilarious. A gift to humanity. So much better than any other social media platform by orders of magnitude. RIP Vine forever in our hearts.

This is what I don't get, why isn't anyone doing a "feature" phone that's essentially a smartphone, but without any cameras, no gps, no orientation sensor, no compass, no hall sensor, only 720p resolution, only one speaker, a huge user replaceable battery, only 1 port (usb type c), no fingerprint reader, good Bluetooth for connectivity with other devices, plastic body, no nfc, no wireless charging, good wifi, good SOC.
The idea is that the phone would be a cheap easily replaceable phone that will last for several years on 1 generation
