My 2 cents tip for quickly selecting "every other" (face or whatever):
Alt-click to select a ring of faces, then choose "Checker deselect" in the Select menu.
*sees pawn shape and gasps at the difficulty* Grant, our lord and savious despite him saying otherwise, says: this may seem like a step backwards.
Are you kidding? These tutorial progression is incredibly well callibrated. Grant, thanks a million!!
Thanks yes I'm trying to give it a lot of thought so glad it's working
I cannot imagine how this can be explained any better. Thank you Grant for all the knowledge you share with us.
Hey, I just wanted to say thanks so much for making these tutorials
5:31 The reason it’s called “mean crease” is because you have more than one edge selected. Each edge has its own crease value, so what it shows you in this case is the mean of all their values. Change the selection to a single edge, and the label for that field changes to just “Crease”.
Makes sense 😃
I'm amazed that as I went forward with the playlist I could better visualize how to model these object after seeing them. Awesome Playlist :)
Please, do exercises to develop texturing skills! And node editor. Thanks!
PS. Cool video.
Will do
@@grabbitt totally this, there aren't too many tutorials for it on youtube
CGMatter has some very good tutorials for nodes
Really helpful tutorial. I found making the chess pieces quite difficult but I managed to get through it and learned a lot in the process. Thanks very much Grant for the awesome tutorials
I thought modelling is easy but when it’s come to hard surface… btw your tutorials helping me a lot. Thanks
Funny that, i would have started with a sphere and extruded downwards after cutting a bottom circle... well played, Grant!
same
I started with the (subdivided) cube and made it round with LoopTools, so I didn't have to worry about those messy n-gons ;)
@@Samurook i fail to see how you managed to get n-gons with the way cidriano and I did it.
@@danieleliahushapiro4280 True, the sphere has it divided into triangles. It's still nice to have quads only though.
Same, but instead of deleting I flattened the bottom and went straight at it.
Really enjoyed this one. First reaction was "that's the hardest one yet by far", then second reaction upon starting the pawn was "oh, I guess this actually is on the easy side".
Overall, this one requires more work than the previous ones, but the techniques needed were seen before. So, basically, it's like an exam on what we learned so far.
The bishop, on the other hand, took me a few tries and is definitely a few notches above anything in the previous challenges. Definitely had to come up with a few new tricks to do that one.
As always, I love your videos and I love this series!
How deep do you plan on going with this? Will later levels cover basic to more advanced UV mapping/texturing?
A BIG difficulty I've had, and I'm sure many other people including you have probably had it as well, is how aimless one sometimes feels when they go from a beginner tutorial to even an intermediate tutorial. Many perceive beginner intermediate and advanced as different things and I've had difficulty with bridging my beginner knowledge with an intermediate tutorial. It's like, sure I've done tutorials, but now that I'm making it myself I start to be like, "Is this too advanced of a thing and should I change my project? Or should I keep going because it's good practice?" But keeping on going could be a waste of time if it's too advanced of a thing, so these exercises are great for that!
These exercises, and your progression of tutorials with the robot, sheep, and sea shack, etc are a FANTASTIC progression of teaching you truly how much one can do with beginner techniques, and these exercises really bridge the gap of problem solving as well as an increasing level to help build to some more advanced tutorials.
Thanks as always!
Thanks :) yes i'll try and keep that progression aspect going :)
@@grabbitt Thank you!
Side note, I found your baking tutorial and your Nodes for Newbies playlist.
Tbh, I've been going to MANY different channels to learn things, and I probably still will to get different perspectives, but I've learned VERY recently how much your content just covers just about the ENTIRETY of Blender, and anything that it doesn't, you're in the process of making.
I keep saying it's amazing, but every time I see a new video by you or discover stuff on your channel I didn't know about, it just keeps renewing the amazement!
Thanks again if I haven't thanked you enough, which I know I probably haven't, considering the amount of work you have put in and continue to put in to all of this content!
Ironically, I just finished making a chess set last week to practice Blender!
I found it a lot easier to start the pawn with the top as a UV Sphere, then select some of the bottom faces, loop tools -> flatten, then extrude the rest from there. Saves all that business about the ball not being round enough.
Pretty smart solution. I just used a union.
Definitely wanna see the bishop :D
Boolean modifier for that mouth slit
@@HeyzDexy That's not good way to go, easy way perhaps, but no good way to go because typology.
@@ASADcz not if you have the 40 dollar addon :)
Perfect, just in time - as always big thank you!
Thanks
I love the series, great job!!
The bishop is very hard! I've done it with the bolean modifier, but in edit mode I struggle... Some more tips would be great!!!
I see the result but I don't find where to start... :-)
perhaps in a later episode
I did it with the boolean too, but the topology... oh god... I just keep it on object mode and pretend it isn't there
@@paulbottomley42 lool
AHHHHHHHH the boolean tool, i never used it , i was using the knife tool and i endup with a complete mess.
i follow many chaneel teaching blender skill. but only your one make me understand deep
you are pumping out the content grant i love it! I learned from this video that the mirror mod is great just to save you time swiveling around the viewport or using xray too much. nice
Thank you for this beautiful video. My son, only 7 years old, following your tutorial, perfectly shaped a pawn!
Great job!
not only in blender.. Your videos has helped me getting good in 3d modeling in any software eg. maya too. Really appreciate .
What you do is amazing but also kind of insane. This channel is better than most content I’ve paid for
Thanks 😃
@Grant abbitt, your really genius.
Very nice tutorial! Absolutely excited to seeing the knight and bishop follow up tutorial! Great work Grant!
i may do that but its a bit advanced for now. I think i need to build slowly so i don't miss people :)
@@grabbitt np mate! :)
I'll be having fun along the way to the top... here, have a pint or two on me... (paypal)
I enjoy this series a lot. Thank you very much!
i think in 4:20 is better to inset then M for merge at centre to create triangles , because triangles will handle better then ngon in this surface
Love this series! Been working my way through the playlist. Was wondering, any chance you could show us how you did the bishop at the end? I've been trying but I just can't figure it out!
Maybe soon
I have never seen an amaizing toutorial more than yours you are so great
I enjoy and learn a lot from this series! Great job and thank you Grant
Thanks
I have no words how great are your videos. Always well prepared, you always know what you want to hand down to us. Keep doing that
Thank you very much!
Very nice modelling - very useful to see how you go through things - cheers for doing these!
Thanks
Grant Abbitt You’re welcome :-)
For the pawn i started with a sphere and went from the top down.
ok NOW am I a grand master modeler?
I definitely feel like one now!
I stumbled across the crease function the other day, but found it of limited effect. I now not only see that I mustve been doing something wrong, but also how useful it is for when you dont want to start hacking (well, I'd be hacking, still a noob lol) at the geometry to get that supporting geometry in...
Challenging and instructive as always. Love this channel.
Thanks 😃
Hi, Keep up with this series. I am a beginner. This playlist is helping me to boost up my 3D model creation learning.
Thanks :)
Me at beginning of tutorial: AAAH! I can't make that!
Me at end of tutorial: Pffft, easy. Next.
*Awesome* playlist!
Great video thanks.
Thanks
You need to explain from the start that you are using a 16 sided cylinder, and why. Because this was important for when you had the double mirror later, when creating the cross. To turn it into the square like that it needs to not only be dividable by 4, but actually 8, because of the corners. I can see people going through this tutorial, starting with a cylinder of 12 or 18 sides or something, then hitting that part and being so confused and needing to start over.
Good point I missed that
Wile I'm over here and had started with a square lol
I just noticed, this vid has almost half as many likes as VIEWS! That's probably because given the nature of it, people are already alt-tabbing between Chrome and Blender, so you've already got interaction there and a like is just one click!
(which u should do because this series is soooooo good!)
I am happy that I already know few things about booleans and it made easy to make that bishop cut
I don't like boolean tool... I mean, I am not sure how to use it. Everytime I use it makes the topology goes crazy.
This episode took me by surprise.
I lave matcap. Since I model for 3d printer, I don't use materials and at most assign viewport colors. Matcap is the only thing that makes model look "alive".
BRL cad uses chess pieces as tutorial, so scripting is good tool for making them(minus knight)
After trying several ways screw was my favorite mainly because Blender doesn't have proper primitive meshes where you can say "use 8 segments per cylinder for now, I will change my mind later": after cylinder is created, it's "baked". But using screw (or geom nodes or scripts) baking meshes can be postponed.
So screw is easiest: you draw 2D shape first, then duplicate, apply, add manually details like a queen crown.
This series has been incredible so far. Thank you for putting these lessons together. I'm having a difficult time understanding what is meant by the "flow" of the mesh. Is that just how Blender selects edges when you alt-click? Is it an exact measurement or more of an abstract concept?
i'll go into that more in later episodes
I used a cube for the pawn, I wonder if there's any drawback to that? The result is about the same I think, except it gives a cap to top and bottom straight away.
Love the series :-).
Thanks
No problem if it looks good
When you subsurf a four-sided cross-section, it comes out just a little bit off from perfectly round. I would recommend starting from at least six sides.
@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 Oh really? I didn't notice I thought as it's symmetrical that it was ok, thanks :-).
I saw some videos showing that it's better for a sphere than actual sphere because of how edges go so I just tried it here too :0.
Can you please explain in next one when to use Mean crease and when to use Mean Bevel Weight with Bevel modifier.
Thanks.
Not sure if mean crease can be exported
I tried doing chess pieces on my own a couple of weeks ago, I managed to finish the knight, then I stoped. Writing this before I see the vid, will comment after aswell to see if I did mine close to this or not :)
Yup, not how I did it :)
I used a circle and extruded from that, but as you say, everything is fine as long as it looks good ;) Thanks again for a superb tutorial!
Thanks
Hi Grant, your exercises are amazing. I love them, but you gave me a hard time with bishop. I can see the topology and it is nice and clean but I cannot figure out how to reach it. I tried boolean (what I thing it is not right way - only my feeling), tried knife, extrude ... and does not make me any senece. Knife or bool gonna break topology and I have to "play" with vertices, but it will ruin the smoothness of the shape. Thats why I thing it is not right way. I read that you gonna make video about bishop in the future, but could you give me a hint, please? The bishop will stay in my mind for loooong time :-D
EDIT: And one more question. Did you break the rule of quads? It does not seems like
no i kept it in quads but you just have to kind of work you way up to this one :)
I'm diggin' it dude!
Thanks :)
Thank you for this video.
thank u so much!
Great video
Thanks
I love your videos!
But in all these Beginner Excercises, I find myself using the destructive method at the end :d
Could it be a preference thing or is it a rookie mistake?
It takes a while to figure out
So much thanks. Plz continue
Thanks :)
Really nice video- also useful information about the matcap material. Does the model keep the crease if you import them to another application?
No
Great video as always. Are you going to show us how to model the bishop in the next episode? Even a timelapse would be helpful.
Maybe later 😃
شكرا جزيلا 🥰
Very good content
Thanks
Thanks for those tutorials :)
Question about the grease: is it taken into account when exporting a model and re-imported in other tools, like Unity (using FBX format) ?
Only soft and hard edges not subdivisons
@@grabbitt Thanks.
hello grant i appreciate your work and i am very thankful.
question: do i need to create the same model as yours or is it okay to make an acceptable one?
Try your own I would say 👍
"Chess pieces" was a tutorial I read in a book milion years ago, they were made with "lathe" modificator. Don't know if Blender has it. Probably does. Quite an interesting way: you draw a silhouette and rotate it to get the shape.
Yeah there are ways, you can use curves and screw modifier I think for example.
I used the 'lathe' modifier on a chess set I created, I think it was about a million years ago for me too... :-)
Yes that way works probably a bit better
Oh man, the lathe modifier is one of the few tools I miss from 3DS Max... second was the smoothing groups modifier, and the third being the topology stack. The modifier stack from Blender is impressive, but sometimes I just hate having to recreate simple geo by overlooking a cut or two when I could have just adjusted the value in the base of the topology stack so far as there are no topology modifiers above it. On the other hand, Blender doesn't have to deal with some very interesting topology behaviour.
Everything else I've used in 3DS Max is matched and in some instances succeeded by Blender's tools, albeit I really hate so many keyboard shortcuts or excessive UI navigation. While Max's UI was clunky, it was much more intuitive to use for me then Blender with regards of use of complex tools. Of course, it can be eliminated by learning Python on Blender, but for whatever reason my brain just doesn't hold on to it... I have learned too many programming languages to digest another one properly. Very frustrating, because I understand the concepts behind Python and even use Python tools... go figure, eh?
Edit: Blender's UI has improved immensely from the last few major iterations, so much so that from 2.78 I'm able to use properly! And I'm quite liking the 2.8 version quite a bit!
Update: I too use the mirror modifier (or the array modifier) as a substitution to the lathe tool.

MIL GRACIAS POR EL TUTORIAL... LA PRESENTACION ES MUY AMIGABLE Y LO PUDE REPLICAR EN MI PC CON FACILIDAD. SALUDOS ECUATORIALES DESDE PUENGASI-QUITO
what you do and what I get when I did it really started to deviate, like a painter putting some brush marks and looks like amazing tree, but when viewer tries to do looks only like bunch of marks,
I cannot have sphere-like top on pawn like yours, body looks so sharp, even if we are clicking things still it requires good eye and artistic point of view I guess xD
keep practicing and it will come :)
Ah!, Grant thought the bishop would be hard for us beginners, but little did he know, Loop tools came to our rescue.
As for the horse, yea nah, that's sculpting stuff. That or trace the shape around like in the Hunting knife tutorial.
Man that damn bishop ! I have a bad time with edge flow for sure x)
When I created a chess-set for a Customer, I really faced all those problems and even more, I wish it was there when I wanted to create them, but thanks anyway, for sharing the knowledge.
Hey Grant, what tablet do you use to help with the sculpting if you don't mind me asking?
a wacom display tablet. you can find links in the description :)
Not sure if you mention it in the video, but I'd be interested in knowing if the mean crease can be exported to a game engine for example. Because if not, then supporting edge loops are the only way to go, right?
Indeed
I'm sure it's situational - and having done the hunting knife before starting this series - I rather do control loops/bevels than creasing.
while modelling do u recommend adding subdivision modifier after u are done modelling or mid way.Cuz for the queen i added sub div modifier after modelling while u used the duplicated pawn which already had sub div mod ,so i was getting different results especially the part where u create the extrusion at 8:23
It's probably easier for this model to use it whilst going along
@@grabbitt Right! Thank you :}
Is it worth making a curve of the "silhouette" of the pawn, then making a circle curve and using the silhouette curve as the extrusion object?
Yes you can for that too
I just realized when he said be careful what you're searching for... I'm like chess pieces.. harmful then I though pawn ohhh they use pOwn as a weird misspelled word play for owned which leads down a rabbit hole of sordid images... Thanks Grant but that flies over the head of those not familiar.
ULTIMATE
Can anyone help, whenever I try to open my last project it's saying that file format is not supported this is happening all the time so, I was forced to use the autosave all the time can anyone give me a solution.
Doing proper topology and edge flow is so hard, I can only hope I'll get better at it cause oh man 😭
Hey Grant, how can i have a speaker with both SoundTrack and NLATrack at the same time? I want to add footsteps sound that follows the animation of the camera but it doesn't allow me to put the sound with the animation together. Thanks in advance.
Not sure
@@grabbitt The sequencer mode is not that handy...it's probably better using an external video editor I guess. The only problem is that if you want create a sound coming from a distance or behind a wall would get trickier. Would be cool if you could somehow make a tutorial on the Sequencer editor. Thank you ;)
when i was a kid i have done these on 3ds max .And the horse was most dificult for me
Actually after inseting the top of the ball there is still a distortion and still very easy noticeably.
yeah thats a tricky one to sort and needs an addon
Hey quick question do you have any experience with the octane render (inside blender)? Is it bettet than cycles?
Not used it
Heya Grant!
Do you have a site which you use for good reference images? I did a search for "Chess pawn reference image" and got a bunch, but they're all either slanted in some way, or pixelated... Neither are easy to work with.
No I just got the first one available
Awesome tutorial, as always. However, I've got a question. I keep on getting this weird star shaped shadowing on the top of the "round" part of the figure (where an n-gon is). I've tried to use the way that you've showed in one of the previous tutorials (to get rid of the n-gon) by doing an inset and then merging the vertices at center, but that doesn't help. Is there an alternative way to solve that problem? Thanks in advance.
grid fill
@@grabbitt tried to fiddle with it, but It only resulted in other visual artifacts) Well, guess the better result will come with practice and a better understanding of geometry flow. Still, thanks for the answer and have a nice day!
You're always welcome, I'll keep bothering you, you're needed . . :D
What're the individual steps to doing the bishop? I've been trying for about five hours and I've gotten nowhere. I've heard something about LoopTools and the knife tool, but I don't know what order to use them in or how to make the indents symmetrical. If you don't plan on doing the bishop tutorial anymore, that's fine, but maybe a few annotated screenshots could do the job just as well with less work.
i don't know if that's a good way to do this, but i did the following: first created the bishop without the removed part, then duplicated and hide it. Then I added a modifier shrinkwrap to my bishop and used the duplicate as target. Then I could start moving the vertices and they still glued to the shape of the bishop. that way i could move the vertices in order to define the shape of the cut. and then i applied the shrinkwrap modifier and extruded inside the faces for the cut. and i tried to move them to make a clean cut. It is far from perfect but I couldn't find a better way with my current knowlege to get the shape and keep all quads
@@thomashugon8178 I didn't understand your answer when you first wrote it, but now that I have more experience with Blender I must say that yours is extremely clever.
what are the downsides of creating a cross from scratch at the top of queen instead of trying to make the square from circle?
Very few
second ;) Love it as always ThX so much grant! This is litterally the series where I learn to most by far!
Thanks
Just a Noob question: Did the mean crease works well when we are making game assets?
No
"The later episodes that are coming our way" threatened Grant with a menacing voice, as if speaking right out of the Bible. Damn you got me scared there!!
Always be ready 😃
I did them all...it was easier to sculpt the knight for me...
Yes a good approach
hi thank you for tutos they are awesome . at the moment i have a big problem for creation of fire effect with 2.81 with eevee !!! i can't find any tutos about fire simulation with eevee for 2.81 ....if you have time you show me how creat and render with eevee it will be awesome
eventually :)
hahaha, "be careful what you're searching for" :-)
Can u make a tutorial ue unwrapping and importing them to substance painter pls
It's not something I dough of but maybe in the future
Would it be possible to make that Bishop indent using Booleans?
Yes
E to extrude then hold Shift + ??? The screencast won't label the key on your monitor. I'm having hard time understand new shortcuts. :(
nvm I got it figure out on my own.
when i try to make the "spikes" on the queen they don't match up, is there anyway to add another loop cut to the model and space it evenly with the others ?
It's a little awkward actually
While working on the king, I faced the auto mirror problem !
when i automirror the king, it mirrors the whole object rather then mirroring that specific part of object
Check my video on mirroring see my quick tips play list
I'm using 3.0.1 and I'm seeing all the edge loops move when one is selected and I press gg to slide? (example the stem of the King piece if I add an edge loop between to other edge loops it effects the un-selected ones) It's keeping me from moving the edge too close to the other (proportional edit is off)??
i think oyu have on cage selected in the modifier
Is giving crease value 1 creates any issues?
Not if topology is good
So we can use crease instead of adding supporting loops in most cases? I'm not seeing many using crease often, is it because of exporting issues? BTW I mostly use edge loops, just clearing this issue
Im struggling with the bishop, any tips to help me do it?
See my more recent video
Seviliyorsun Kral !
i did it with a uv sphere is that bad ? 😀 it looks almost the same
is having lots of topology (like a sphere) bad thing to do ?
with sphere now that i look top has some distortion because it's triangles can this be solved ? other than doing again 😤
flatten the triangles
For some reason suddenly at 12:32 when I try to extrude after baveling it doesn't let me do that, instead its like its dragging (like in G/grab) the circle... I shift-z to not scale on Z axis but it still doesn't work. Why is that? kinda stuck on it.
Also when I extrude in 12:45 and then scale, the inner circle isn't a quad, it's a circle...
Remove doubles
