The whole Claremont's run should be mandatory for any comic book reader. The real father of the X-men
Shots fired…=)
John Byrne deserves more credit. He wasn't just Clearmont's penciller he Co plotted the iconic X-Men stories. The X-Men weren't as good before or since so Byrne was the X factor (pun intended).
Not to mention his legendary runs on The Fantastic Four and Alpha Flight!
Your Top Ten is pretty dead on. I just don’t agree with the order. The Dark Phoenix Saga gets move credit then it deserves. It absolutely is Top Ten just not #1 “God Loves, Man Kills” absolutely, without question deserves the top spot.
People who hate the X-Men could read only that story and admit to themselves it’s a great story, deserving of all the praise you can give it. That story is as fresh today as when I 1st read in in the 80’s because the theme, art and character development in the story is top notch. You don’t have to know a single X-Men or anything about mutants or Marvel comics in general to totally appreciate that story.
That’s why it deserves top billing.
My personal favorite stories are: X-Tinction Agenda, Inferno, The Muir Island Saga, The Phalanx Covenant (particularly the X-Factor/X-Force/Excalibur chapter) Legion Quest, a majority of the 90s X-Force run (I prefer when Cable ain't there), Amazing X-Men (that series was too short), and the New Mutants in Asgard... The second time.
Also, I pretty much agree with this list, I would just switch the positions of a lot of these.
I really enjoyed BMB's all new x-men/Uncanny run a few years ago.
House of M should legit be an MCU movie!
ddsq2 WandaVision is my hopes on that story. It’s the only thing that makes sense for having a 50s era sitcom with a perfect suburban family.
I want that so badly, plus maybe they'll show some of Scarlet Witch's true power.
Micah-David Saunders That’s definitely the hope.
The Fatal Attractions story is my favorite. Even though it was a short one it really impacted all of the X books for ten years
Damnnn how did they miss out Fatal Attractions?? Easily my fave 90's. Then it was followed by The Phalanx Covenant and Legion Quest before getting into AOA. That was a good time for X-comics
The scene where Jean is desperately trying to hold Logan together after Magneto removed his adamantium is burned into my memory.
X-Men Season One, THAT should be the MCU version
And a sprinkling of X-Men First Class the 3 vol. books by Jeff Parker
As long as they include some Giant Size X-Men as well, I'd agree..
@@bitca222 me personally, i think they should do the smaller team before introducing Wolverine and that lot
@@GoddessOfWhim2003 Possibly.. but I need more diversity than yet another all white leads superhero team. Especially with X-Men who are filled with awesome characters of color.
@@bitca222 the only cool colored person in xmen is Darwin everyone else is a push over
Rick Remender: Uncanny X-Force
Its good but its X-Force.
My tops are Uncanny X-Force by Remender, Astonishing X-Men by Whedon, New X-Men by Morrison, X-Men First Class by Parker, and X-Men 1 by Jim Lee
I have dreams where Uncanny X-Force is properly adapted into a live-action movie.
The X-tinction Agenda is the Greatest X-story ever writen... ever
Matt Chew isn’t that the first arc of the Joss Whedon run he mentioned?
I’ve read most of these. Still haven’t gotten to Age of Apocalypse. I will at some point. Great video as always.
I have the gigantic, like 30 lb hardcover book... i could only get about 2/3 of the way thru before i started really dozing off.... a whole lot of nothing happens... as much not going on as there IS shit going on...
Devils advocate to myself-- i didnt finish it, so maybe the final 3rd makes up for it, but i was INSANELY let down by what i read, especially since Apocalypse is one of my favorite villains overall, never mind an xmen villain
I think Messiah Complex and Messiah War were great stories and even Avengers v X-Men where we see the Phoenix possess the likes of Cyclops and others...among other wild things.
not a huge fan of Morrison, Whedon and some of the newer runs, but you nailed all the important ones from the 80's.
Messiah Complex?? Second Coming????
Just read Schism and that was pretty powerful and meta.
Jim Lee's work on X-Men during the space adventures of the mutants were great too and I have a soft spot for the arc on mojo-world.
It's a good list. If after reading that you don't like X-men comics, you can give up.
No Fatal Attractions or X-Tinction Agenda? I would have replaced House of M with any of of those personally. :(
Glad you included Hellfire though, very under rated :)
I was thinking "God Loves, Man Kills," would be number one. (Probably because it's my favorite graphic novel of all-time.) But though we may not share the same #1, I respect your logic, and knowledge. However I'd like to point out that the person who "saved the day" in that graphic novel was a non-mutant, police officer. A rather important part of the story I thought. (A non-mutant was the source of the "evil", but also, right on the edge of victory for Stryker, the day is saved by a non-mutant.)
I think I would have also included the "New Mutants" on your list. (The first X-men Graphic Novel (Marvel Graphic Novel #4, followed by God Loves Man Kills.)
Also I think the Phoenix saga is great! But I hate the evil alien menace that is the "Phoenix Force". When I was reading the original story it was very poignant (and awesome, I thought,) that Jean Grey was transformed exactly the same way, (as was written, and drawn,) as The Fantastic Four. She was a mutant who was exposed to cosmic rays and was enhanced. (Also like the U-Foes.) I feel the retcon has damaged much of the impact of the original story. And kind-of become like Oprah... "You get the Phoenix Force, and you get the Phoenix Force, and..." (Kind of like the Symbiotes.)
As always, thank you so very much for your X-citing video.
Are these stand alone books or are they multiple comics? I'm looking for recommendations for standalone books to buy with the full story in one book.
Great damn list Ewan
You should do more lists for X-Men related titles (e.g. Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender, or I don't know...Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender).
Claremont's run is in my opinion mandatory reading for if you want to get into X-Men.
Indeed!
Watching this made me want to re read some of these and check out the others for the 1st time (+)
Do this for daredevil too!
tis the best segmet you've done yet..! cheers!
One of the best is the Muir Island - Proteus saga. The first time the new X-Men battled Proteus.
3:17 says this while showing a picture of Beast in pain
No mention of Fatal Attractions?
What about fatal attractions , the executioners song or extinction agenda
X-tinction Agenda definitely, Cables first crossover and the last gasp of the New Mutants before X-Force took over.
A cheat answer for me is Uncanny Avengers. Havoc finally getting the love he deserves on that run.
Good list
The Byrne Claremont run hasn’t and probably never will be equaled. Just top notch quality quality all around.
Well done
Executioner song is the best one for me
I'm heartbroken that Messiah complex and second coming were not part of this
Cable is insane, but mutantkind is lucky to have him. He's basically a mutant Nick Fury that travels through time.
How could not include Xcutioner's Song???
I know right l???
I started reading X-Men a few issues before The Executionor Song
Whedon's Astonishing X-Men > Morrison's New X-Men. Don't @ me.
Morrison's X-Men was a convoluted disaster
@@theonlymatthew.l And yet they called that Xorn "twist" one of the greatest of all times loll
Easily. Very easily. Though I do love Emma and Cyke's relationship and that was Morrison.
@@thakatspajamaz if by great they mean makes no sense despite repeated retcons, then I guess they would be right
Totally agree. Morrison's run was trash (and do not get me started on that Phoenix egg crap). Whedon was a breath of fresh air. His book was familiar, fun, and enjoyble. And Cassady's art was great. Quitely's was utter garbage.
Got 2 & 1. Also, one I would have for an honourable mention: Avengers vs. X-Men.
SuperYouFox no they did my x men wrong in that comic
I'm glad I'm not alone in liking that story
I 💚 the X-Men.
I love Xmen Red and Jean Grey
Magneto Testament is a great one.
What about fantastic four?
I'd say Messiah complex and second coming are must reads.
Check out old man Logan too
1: Days of Future Past
2: Pheonix Saga
3: God Loves, Man Kills
4: The Age of Apocalypse
5: Astonishing X-Men
6: Old Man Logan
7: The Mutant Massacre
8: Inferno
9: House of X
10: The New X-Men
Some I might add to the list: Schism, the All New Xmen by Brian Bendis, and Battle of the Atom.
Are you serious? Battle of the Atom? Why? (+)
Can't agree at all.
I think it's wrong to call it graphic novels when it's events from ongoing magazines. To me, Graphic novels are self-contained narratives usually set in their own continuity or some offshoot of an established universe. Of course, we used to call that "mini-series". The graphic novel is a term made to make people feel better about "just reading comic books".
Only one of the entries was an actual graphic novel…..
I always thought cat like Beast wss weird
How about Xtintion Agenda
AoA is my favorite X-men story EVER!
Does uncanny x-force count?
House of M #2. This channel needs to stop kicking riding Bendis!
Ah! *Blood* ,sweat and tears - You famous.
Don't tell me what to do! Bottle of pills, here I come.
Legion Quest
why do you spoil it tho
‘Frank Quitely.’
Shows art by Ethan Van Sciver.
Lol. Just ribbing you. Morrison’s New X-Men deserves to be on the list, and definitely higher than Whedon’s, though the art was more consistent in Astonishing. Don’t agree with all of these, but X-Men got me into comics. It’s a special comic with some of the best comic stories of any comic.
My only fault with Morrison’s run is Magneto’s characterization and death. This was one of the few things I have no problem with retconning. It just kind of threw away all the work Claremont did with the character. Otherwise I enjoy the run
Asgardian Wars had 100% more Loki, it was damn good
As was Extinction Agenda, minus the off outting Liefeld art (seriously, his art takes you right out of the story!)
Whedon’s run started 2004
Good job spoiling the twist you praised
Well okay. Ill read them before tommorow i guess
!!! Wakanda Forever !!!
Actually Xtreme X-men gave us Cat Beast, and I for one was never really a fan. Kudos for Sage saving his life, but meh for his new look.
I was about to say that about Cat Beast
I personally am a fan of the Muir island saga involving the x-men and x-factor battling the shadow king. Plus this lead into my fav x-men era of the blue and gold teams. Also when I became an x-men fan which the timing does connect with the 90's x-men cartoon lol. The 90's x-men cartoon is the best version of the x-men we have seen to date on the screen.
Brood saga
Look for me where you least expect to find me. I will be there.:)
No Onslaught
Weird, I was expecting Old Man Logan on this list...
I think they were going for ones that included a large cast of X-Men.
Until 2017 people would cry for x2 and from 2017 people cried for logan
Cyclops is right!!!
Magneto was left.
God Loves, Man Kills
I do not agree with the order of this list (+)
No A V X? The Phoenix 5 is probably my all time favorite alternate designs
One to skip is anything by Chuck Austen.
Comic Book Guy yeah never read any of his run and don’t plan to. I think it was actually these guys who talked about how bad it was
@Comic Book Guy Archangel and Husk, banging in the air above her family home with her family watching from below...nothing else need be said by how bad it was.
*Killer points a gun at me
Me: Don't shoot! I haven't read this X-Men comics yet!
Killer: oh shit dude, why don't you say that earlier
So am i right, no Mutant genesis, no Muri island saga or no Messiah complex..... this list is bullshit 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Too......late.... blaaaaahhhhhhh
Storylines
But meh
Ewan you beautiful beautiful man.......on the next video will you say the you want some chicken and a can of Coke.
Maybe if you want people to read these you shouldn't explain the entire story beginning to end.
no X-men uncanny these guys are not true X-men fans
house of M at no 2 laughable waaaaaaaaaaay to high somebody likes bendis I see.....
Infero is better than Morrison's New X-Men? GTFOH. And you should slap yourselves for including Season One over any of the Grand Design books.
