+The Last Pepsi You forgot "Countdown to Dark". Also, the Captain America: Winter Soldier graphic novel stole it's concept from a Moon Knight/Spider-Man crossover comic from the 1990's. Even the youtube channel "Looper" brought this up as reasons why Moon Knight can't have a movie. Because everyone keeps taking his original ideas.
I was shocked that Marvels first Graphic Novel "The Death of Captain Mar-vel" wasnt mentioned as it touches on our ultimate fear and on how much superheroes have in common with us, thus pointing out how much superhero we have in ourselves ... And yes the "Phoenix Saga" brought a tear (at the time) to my eyes, not mentioning the X-men's "God Loves, Man Kills" i think thats an injustice to the brilliant story writing skills that once prevailed in the genre of comic books ... despite the above mentioned this was an interesting video
Ak Wilson Kraven's Last Hunt, fuck yes. That was a brilliant end for a classic villain. One that, to be honest, I hadn't thought much of. That story proved me wrong and put Spidey through one of his most traumatic experiences.
@@sapanparekh3327 The reason they weren't on the list is because this list doesn't include ANY actual graphic novels; what it is referring to as "graphic novels" are actually just trade paperbacks, collected editions of previously published issues of regular monthly comic books. Some people incorrectly refer to all comic books as "graphic novels" because they seem to think that just calling them what they are, comic books, isn't "sophisticated" enough for them, and because they don't bother to learn that "graphic novel" is an actual established term for large, single issue, self-contained sequential art stories, often about heavier topics, as opposed to the ongoing monthly magazines that are regular comic books. Both DC and Marvel have established graphic novel lines; Marvel's were even called "Marvel Graphic Novels." Marvel Graphic Novel #1 was The Death of Captain Marvel, which dealt with Captain Marvel dieing of cancer, the attempt and failure of scientific genius superheroes such as Reed Richard's to cure cancer, Cap's death and funeral, and finally the fallout of his death and its effects on the superhero community and his archenemy Thanos. Marvel Graphic Novel #5: God Loves, Man Kills, was about a fanatical right wing religious group that targeted mutants for persecution as "abominations before God", assassinated mutant children, and delved into the twisted mind of the celebrity preacher Reverend William Stryker who lead them, until he tried to murder Kitty Pryde on nation television but was shot by a New York policeman who was there for security. *Those* are graphic novels. The only things on this list are trade paperbacks, which are most definitely not the same thing. People who refer to all comic books as "graphic novels" are just being pretentious because they think calling them comic books is childish and they want to use a more "serious" term. It's really annoying.
While I love Peter David's work, and the Death of Jean DeWolff was one of the first Spidey trades I bought...Kraven's Last Hunt is a far more iconic and worthy entry for this list. It's just, simply --the best Spidey story ever told. Hands down.
Very true that Marvel was slow getting to the more “sophisticated” storylines when compared to DC. DC in the late 80s was putting out a lot of sharp new takes on existing characters, whereas Marvel was adding bigger and bigger guns to X books and more Liefeld clones.
So all the stuff in the 60s and 70s wasn’t sophisticated like demon in a bottle Spider-Man no more if this be my destiny the night Gwen Stacy died return of the green goblin the coming of galactus the Phoenix saga I’m just saying marvel was doing this since the 60s and just because something isn’t dark doesn’t mean it can’t be adult I get that an adult world is different from a kid world but are you miserable or depressed 100% of the time or are you more happy and energetic and every now and then might get sad marvel is the house of ideas and they will stay like that from now to the end of time
I remember reading Marvels back in 2007. I didn't think much about it then, but the one story that stuck out to me was the one involving the X-Men and the parallels to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Even for my 11-year old self, this was very impressive. Nice job Alex Ross and the writer whose name I just forgot while writing this comment down. :) LOL
I would have picked one of the two most iconic Doctor Strange graphic novels: The Oath, elements of which were used in the solo moved; and Into Shamballa, which not only delved into issues of spirituality and hard choices, but also has to be one of the most stunningly rendered graphic novels, with each panel being a watercolor painting.
Man Without Fear and Guardian Devil are amazing, and Frank Millers first run on Daredevil, especially when he switched from artist to writer for the series, was pretty great, too. I wasn't able to get into any other comics the way I got into Daredevil. Except for Watchmen, but that's a different beast entirely.
to be honest, I haven't read many of these stories (though I now intend to) I feel the original Civil deserves at least an honorable mention, it was a pretty pivotal story arc as well as being genuinely interesting
None of these were Marvel Graphic Novels. The Marvel Graphic Novel line were titles like The Death of Captain Marvel, God Loves, Man Kills, Doctor Doom & Doctor Strange: Triumph & Torment (one of the best things ever) and The New Mutants (the graphic novel that began the series.) And yet, Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, Sandman, etc. are just collections of monthly comics. Graphic Novels don't exist at all, the name Graphic Novel is just comercial propaganda that tries to make comics to sound more "sophisticated", you are reading comicbooks, be proud of it. This list is a good excuse to recommend good comicbooks.
Yes they are all graphic novels. Just because it was not released as part of marvels graphic novel line does not mean they are not graphic novels. By all definitions, they are graphic novels. Stop being snobby and just enjoy the list and people talking about comics.
Marvels by Kurt Busiek & Alex Ross was a wonderful homage to the Classic Marvel Comics era, from 1939-1973 or so; it deserves the #1 slot in your list IMHO. And, Yes, I do have my copy! 😁❤️ Same with Infinity Gauntlet! Loved it and am currently re reading it in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War/Endgame. As Jim Starlin noted, "Its essentially about a guy who wants to impress his girlfriend. Many fans can identify with that. Demon in A Bottle is one storyarc I am still hoping to get one of these days. When it comes to Spider-man its a hard decision. Death of Gwen Stacy, Kraven's last hunt, Symbiote saga, the retelling of his origin in the Ultimate comics and Spider-man No more. But my personal favorite is "the kid who collects Spider-man" No costumed villain just real world circumstance. Or if you want any even sadder entry. Spider-man "Leah" prepare yourself for that one.
Marvel's "Countdown to Dark" is their best graphic novel period. I have yet to read a story from them better than that and it's a Moon Knight comic nonetheless.

Some solid works there. I would also include the "Infinity Wars" and "Secret Wars" if for no other reason than the impact the stories had. Plus, the "fight" between Spidey and the X-Men was a delight for a Spidey fan such as myself. They underestimated him severely.
Thor God bomb by Jason Aaron was awesome. I would have put Coming Home as spideys best. Death of Cap. Age of Ultron...balls, need to go read now! Great choices though :)
I believe Annihilation by Dan Abnett one of the best Graphic Novels and Story Lines of all time and arguable the best Cosmic story since Infinity Guantlet
Wow quite a few missing here... Planet Hulk, New Avengers, some of the Moonknight runs, New X-Men by Grant Morrisson, Cable & Deadpool, and of course Avengers VS X-Men (kidding).
Spider-Man: Reign. I stand by it, Dark Knight Returns But With Spider-Man. Makes Venom a really sympathetic character in the end, and has some great imagery. Also, Kraven's Last Hunt!
Wolverine story, 'Origin' is better... Old Man Logan is too morbid and it's basically 'Wanted' Marvel edition, Origin is specifically tailored for Wolverine.
i actually got Marvels earlier this month, and i love it, its gripping, action packed, fun, its just marvel at its best (aside from no Deadpool, but he wasn't made at that point)
How about a countdown of ACTUAL graphic novels, not one of stories that appeared originally in multi-issue arcs that were later collected in graphic novel form?
What about 'God Loves, Man Kills?' one of the greatest comic book stories ever told and the inspiration for one of the best comic book movies ever made?
Well you put a lot of effort into this video, I must take issue with the title. These are collected editions and not graphic novels. I'm thinking Death of Captain Marvel or Xmen: God Loves Man Kills, Dread Star, New Mutants, they are true graphic novels. Just an observation.
Yes they are all graphic novels. Just because it was not released as part of marvels graphic novel line does not mean they are not graphic novels. By all definitions, they are graphic novels. Stop being snobby and just enjoy the list and people talking about comics.
Hey SD Brad & Kardboard Kenney, re: Merriam-Webster Graphic Novel (noun) a novel in the form of comic strips. Graphic = Of or related to pictures (i.e. - Illustrated) + Novel = A fictional prose narrative of considerable length Und so Graphic Novel = An illustrated A fictional prose narrative of considerable length So in this case the terms 'graphic novel' and 'trade paperback' are interchangeable.
I read the entire Jessica Jones Alias Max graphic novel series it was a really awesome and great graphic novel people really do need to read it I read it before the Netflix show debut so I had an understanding of the character just a really great series of books
You're not the only one my friend. I don't understand why so many people have a problem understanding the difference between graphic novel and trade paper back.
@Frank Castle .. Except that one is a collection of a story from previously published issues of a series while the other is one previously UNpublished single story and not part of any series. This list contains ten of the former. Examples of the latter would be God Loves Man Kills, The Death of Captain Marvel, and Revenge of the Living Monolith.
Good list, definitely a lot of new stuff I hadn't heard of or had heard referenced, but hadn't checked out which I now plan to. My favorite is the lengthy Hickman run on New Avengers and Avengers which culminate in the Secret Wars. It encompasses multiple events, but its the complicated and ambitious elements which play out in almost a poetic fashion over the entire course of the series which makes it all one effort in my mind. I thought it terrific and ambitious.
Dark phoniex over god love man kills which was an actual graphic novel always perplexes me in these bigger channels top ten lists. It's like they grab the ones they have heard of...
10:Punisher Max:In the Beginning
9:Captain America:The Winter Solider
8:A.K.A Jessica Jones:Alias
7:X-Men:Dark Pheonix Saga
6:Black Panther:The Client
5:Marvels
4.Spider-Man:The Death of Jean DeWolf
3:Iron Man:Demon in a Bottle
2:The Infinity Gauntlet
1:Daredevil:Born Again
+The Last Pepsi You forgot "Countdown to Dark". Also, the Captain America: Winter Soldier graphic novel stole it's concept from a Moon Knight/Spider-Man crossover comic from the 1990's.

Ten trade paperbacks. ZERO graphic novels.
RamsTheNameCom it was their list, not mine

good. now i can skip this video.

Yeah God loves man kills is amazing.
It's probably because marvel and dc get clicks
Ak Wilson definitely
What about CIVIL WAR?? When all issues are collected, that story will take you for a ride.
KRAVEN´S LAST HUNT
YES!
X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills
Brandon Akana Love it
I was surprised not to see this one, also.
I expected this to be the number 1 on the list. I was also suprised that Simonson's Thor wasn't there...He stood Alone....
I also expected to see this as number 1. Surprised it didn't even make the list at all.

What about X-Men: God loves Man kills
Felix Arm why didn't they mention that
One of the greatest books ever
It's an actual graphic novel as opposed to this list of trade paperbacks. Great book.
Solid list! I've only read about half of these though, so you've given me some more to add to my must reads :)
My sister knew I was a big comics fan, and got me Marvels one year. It blew me away, still one of my faves. Great list!

Insane Ian Agreed!!
Insane Ian the other was pretty good
Insane Ian Kraven's Last Hunt made me cry.

I think that Wolverine Origin, E Is For Extinction, Kravens Last Hunt, Guardian Devil, Avengers Disassembled, and Secret Wars should've been on this.
Gotta say, even tho I love Born Again, Bendis’s run on DD is just next level stuff. Best man without fear run and storylines of all time
Both Jonathan Hickman & Mark Waid's Fantastic Four are freaking amazing
and DnA's Guardians of the Galaxy is also an epic cosmic run.

Silver Surfer: Requiem is another must read. I didn't really care for Silver Surfer until I read that book.
noobslayer135 Hell yeah! Great story!!
Great book read the Dan Slott runs too
I already loved silver surfer but when I read requiem I fell in love. Absolutely beautiful story
Ugh, what a SNORE that story is.
That story changed how I look at comics
Epic brody. Sling wave
Thx for this nice video. Don't care about punisher, jessic Jones or daredevil, so my top 10 is completely different😅, but enjoyed your video❤️

Tanner Heslet just because your mom keeps on feeding you bullshit to make you happy, these are NOT graphic novels
Kardboard Kenny Yes they are. 😂 By definition they are graphic novels. A TPB is a graphic novel by definition. Stop being stupid.
Marvels by Kurt Busiek & Alex Ross was a wonderful homage to the Classic Marvel Comics era, from 1939-1973 or so; it deserves the #1 slot in your list IMHO. And, Yes, I do have my copy! 😁❤️

You guys ever do anything on Continuity Comics?
If you guys do a second one of this, please include Wolverine (the one in Japan) and Spider Man: Kraven´s Last Hunt.
That cover depicting DD and Batman is hellah awesome...I'm just saying this off topic.
Daredevil, Parts of a Whole is one of my all time favorites.
Can You guys do one of these lists for image comics
The Annihilation series was amazing. One of the very few that I am happy to reread.
Marvel's "Countdown to Dark" is their best graphic novel period. I have yet to read a story from them better than that and it's a Moon Knight comic nonetheless.
RamsTheNameCom who wrote it, when did it come out, how can one collect it?
+Biggie Cheese Doug Moench wrote it, the graphic novel came out in 2010 and is worth $80 to $100 since it is very rare, the story itself was written back in 1979, and Doug Moench won an award for best story from it.
Also because of "Countdown to Dark", a lot of comic book writes/artists hail the duo (Doug Moench writer/Bill Sienkivics Illustrator) as THE PRIME EXAMPLE of how a comic should be written and drawn. The best match up in the history of comics.
By the way, there is no easy way of collecting for this story. If you want the individual issues they are worth about $50 a piece.
RamsTheNameCom is it collected in any Moon Knight epic collections? I’ve really wanted to get more into Moon Knight
+Biggie Cheese Nope, Epic Collections anthology completely skips over "Countdown to Dark".
Since "Countdown to Dark" was printed in the back pages of Hulk Magazine.
You know Lupis the Werewolf who cameos in that Jeff Lemire Moon Knight story? He's from "Countdown to Dark".
You know the story of Marc Spector killing his brother with a grenade which was mentioned in the Max Bemis comics? Well that happened in "Countdown to Dark".
If you haven't read any of the new Moon Knight comics then good, they all suck and wrote Moon Knight completely wrong.
Moon Knight is not suppose to be insane nor have multiple personality disorder.
RamsTheNameCom
The only thing I really read on Moon Knight is the Warren Ellis Run, And whenever he showed up on Ultimate Spider Man?
What comics do you recommend and what is Moon Knight supposed to be If not insane?
I love the winter soldier and dark phoenix saga. Much love from southern California.
If I would recommend Marvel stories, these are my favorite pick!
1. Planet Hulk
2. Old man Logan
3. Death of Captain Marvel
4. Marvels
5. the Korvac Saga
6. Infinity Gauntlet
7. Marvel Knight Spider-man
8. Marvel 1602
9. Secret Wars
10. Kravens last hunt
Number 10 got me thinking.... WHY DA FUK!!! DID TARANTINO NOT MAKE A PUNISHER MOVIE, excuse me I mean why Mr. Tarantino I would like to know??
Lone Wolf I HAD THAT THOUGHT TOO IT JUST SEEMS LIKE THE PERFECT MATCH
Because both the Punisher and Tarantino both have to be rated R and rated R movies dont make as much money as nice safe PG-13 movies do. The only thing Hollywood hates more then a minor risk, is new ideas.
Saige Hope it did it could've been a gritty revenge movie like Kill Bill or Django with deposition
Ogdamastakilla I'm ok with those movies but I would be loved to see it
Arthas Menethil that is so true no one had any idea that Reservoir Dogs would be so loved and such a cult classic
No Kraven's Last Hunt?
What is the difference between a graphic novel and a normal comic? I'm new to comics so I'm still trying to figure this comic book world
Read Punisher max for the first time last year and Oh my god. I loved it :D
can you make a daredevil list as well?
Great video bro 👊
Not sure if "graphic novels" was the term you were looking for. Maybe "story arcs" or "trade parperbacks" would've made more sense. Marvel DOES have actual graphic novels that are amazing, like "Rage of Ultron" and Jim Starlin's "Infinity" trilogy, but none of those were mentioned.
WalmartSlayer exactly!
What's the difference between a graphic novel and trade paperback?
Yes they are all graphic novels. Just because it was not released as part of marvels graphic novel line does not mean they are not graphic novels. By all definitions, they are graphic novels. Stop being snobby and just enjoy the list and people talking about comics.
@@tannerheslet5347 no a graphic novel is something like Frank Miller's 300 or Alan Moore's V for vendetta
Both stand alone stories, like 'the man without fear' and issue compilations in trade form are under the umbrella term ' graphic novel'.
yeah I need to read these
Some solid works there. I would also include the "Infinity Wars" and "Secret Wars" if for no other reason than the impact the stories had. Plus, the "fight" between Spidey and the X-Men was a delight for a Spidey fan such as myself. They underestimated him severely.
That fight was pretty sweet.
Your definition of "Graphic Novel" is different from mine, and half of these don't fit the description.
If you have not done so already, could you please do a list of the 10 must read Daredevil stories?
Angry Dwarf Studios there is a RUclipsr by the name of The Rageaholic that has a list for daredevils fans. Go check him out.
Xmen: God loves, man kills
There are a couple I would recommend which include Wolverine: Weapon X storyline, Old Man Logan, or Spider-Man: Venom are also pretty good.
I think only bought two issues of the Infinity Gauntlet back in the 90's when I had a high top fade and weighed 160lbs
I'd have Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment in the top 5 at least. Best Doom story ever, and some choice early Mignola artwork.
Spider-Man: Reign. I stand by it, Dark Knight Returns But With Spider-Man. Makes Venom a really sympathetic character in the end, and has some great imagery. Also, Kraven's Last Hunt!
I would of had to put Old Man Logan on the list.
Wolverine story, 'Origin' is better... Old Man Logan is too morbid and it's basically 'Wanted' Marvel edition, Origin is specifically tailored for Wolverine.
BioCapsule Huh, everyone to their own I guess.
BioCapsule "too morbid"
Old man Logan isn't a great comic in my opinion, but Logan is a great adaption to a naff graphic novel
To me it's kind of overrated. Film was way better
i actually got Marvels earlier this month, and i love it, its gripping, action packed, fun, its just marvel at its best (aside from no Deadpool, but he wasn't made at that point)
The best comic book storylines are always the ones that rather than focus on the situations, they focus on the *characters*
Nice list... I recommend *Batman: Hush*
I would have reccomended "God Loves, Man Kills" as well. I think it's a must read for anyone wanting to get into the x-men
Do a video about Hellboy
Any of the ultimate spider man comics are worth it the art and writing are my favorite from any spider man comics
Good list but I would def put in Kravens last hunt, Earth X and fantastic 4s Trial of Galactus
One of the first REAL (and unofficial) crossovers in the Marvel Universe was Asgardian Wars.
funny you missed that.
Also: Executioner's Song.
On 2:27, the top Captain America’s shield has the red and white stripes swapped.
Planet Hulk is up there as one of my favorite Marvel stories.
The death of Jean Dewolf storyline was the beginning of the creation of Venom.
Well you put a lot of effort into this video, I must take issue with the title. These are collected editions and not graphic novels. I'm thinking Death of Captain Marvel or Xmen: God Loves Man Kills, Dread Star, New Mutants, they are true graphic novels. Just an observation.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Daredevil Born Again suppose to be the inspiration for Daredevil Season 3?
I think the word your looking for was "Careening"...through the cosmos
Is it just me or would you want to have certain older comics remastered.
*_All Punisher Max. The end._*
NodMan: I respectfully disagree. But if you want to argue about it, please wait until I've read it.
Agreed...if we're only referring to Garth Ennis' and Jason Aaron's run that is.
Marvel Maverick the garth ennis run was lit
NodMan Hell yeah
NodMan AGREED. And any Garth Ennis Punisher story.
No "Days of Future Past"?
Literally not one of these was a graphic novel....
Yes they are all graphic novels. Just because it was not released as part of marvels graphic novel line does not mean they are not graphic novels. By all definitions, they are graphic novels. Stop being snobby and just enjoy the list and people talking about comics.
Tanner Heslet you need to learn what a graphic novel is. these are trade paperbacks.
Hey SD Brad & Kardboard Kenney, re: Merriam-Webster Graphic Novel (noun) a novel in the form of comic strips.
Graphic = Of or related to pictures (i.e. - Illustrated)
+
Novel = A fictional prose narrative of considerable length
Und so Graphic Novel = An illustrated A fictional prose narrative of considerable length
So in this case the terms 'graphic novel' and 'trade paperback' are interchangeable.
How about Planet Hulk World War Hulk?
Nice
Spiderman Reign deserved a place on this list.
Im starting to get the idea that Ewan kind of likes Daredevil, just a little.
Kurt Busiek, that was it :)
Kraven's Last Hunt, Old man Logan, World war Hulk, civil war.
Born Again is my favorite comic book
This channel is about comics isn't it? So why is literally everything about marvel and DC. Give image some love
Yoav Cohen or Dark horse
Or Warren Publishing.... Or Dynamite Comics.
It's about views, sadly, i don't think a top 10 image comics would get as many views, which is a shame.
Or Milestone
Yoav Cohen And Valiant, IDW, Action Labs, and Dark Horse Horse
I read the entire Jessica Jones Alias Max graphic novel series it was a really awesome and great graphic novel people really do need to read it I read it before the Netflix show debut so I had an understanding of the character just a really great series of books
Collections of long running series are not "graphic novels".
You've posted this list before because I've posted this comment before.
You're not the only one my friend. I don't understand why so many people have a problem understanding the difference between graphic novel and trade paper back.
It's a thing people who are embarrassed to read comics do. I did it myself as a teen.
Thank you!!
Anybody know what comic at 0:55 is?
Good list, definitely a lot of new stuff I hadn't heard of or had heard referenced, but hadn't checked out which I now plan to.
My favorite is the lengthy Hickman run on New Avengers and Avengers which culminate in the Secret Wars. It encompasses multiple events, but its the complicated and ambitious elements which play out in almost a poetic fashion over the entire course of the series which makes it all one effort in my mind. I thought it terrific and ambitious.
Squadron Supreme (original 12 issue mini series) and Avengers Disassembled should have been in the top 10 IMHO.
What about secret invasion or civil war
no death of captain marvel?
Anybody else feel him stare into your soul at the end?
The thumbnail Gwen Stacy looks like Jim Cary in drag.
I'm surprised the graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvell didn't appear here.
Hahahaha!! Ewen finally recognized Jules as his dad! Way to take responsibility Jules. Now, feed that poor boy! He weighs like 75 pounds!
What about Ultimate Spider-Man?
What about World War Hulk?
Dark phoniex over god love man kills which was an actual graphic novel always perplexes me in these bigger channels top ten lists. It's like they grab the ones they have heard of...
