Just wanted to point out something from the Danny Ketch cameo at the end of Marvels: He looks like he's no older than 9 or 10 years old. This scene takes place after Gwen's death, right around the time that the Jackal would start making the Peter Parker clones. Using the clones as a sort of time measurement, Ben Reilly says that he's been around for 5 years when he meets Peter Parker. By then, Danny Ketch had already become the Ghost Rider (for about 4 years in real time). So in short, based on Marvels, Danny is already Ghost Rider by age 14 or 15. I dunno why, I just find that really funny.
I agree, it’s a good thing that Phil probably didn’t live long enough to see the heroes of the 90’s. I did and it drove me from the world of comics. Yes! I love this comic, I got it for my birthday years ago! Thanks for this. Having revisited it via your lovely video and astute commentary, I can see why I loved it. While a kind of Alan Moore for beginners on the surface, in some ways, the artwork and sincere tone of wonderment is both touching and inspirational. In other words, it makes you wonder at what the world would be like if heroes were real. Just like a good comic should.
Dang Matt, I've pretty much seen all your videos and so far this is probably your best one yet. You just keep improving after every video which is rare to see in a youtuber. I always enjoy your content and also enjoy your intelligent script behind them. Keep it up.
Can you do a video on Watchmen? It's the only comic book to ever make it into the 100 best novels list, it's widely regarded as the greatest graphic novel (sometimes comic book) of all time, and it literally launched the re-genesis of comics and saved them from the brink of collapse...It's a book that affects me as an aspiring writer myself and when I do become a comic book writer, I wish to save comics the same way Alan Moore did (lets be honest, people don't buy comic books or go to comic shops anymore...It's a dying industry and that honestly breaks my heart). So please, make a video on the book, it would really mean a lot bro.
I'm really hoping Kevin Feige thinks of creating a movie adaptation of MARVELS for the MCU, chronicling Phases 1, 2 and 3, with the Snap representing Gwen Stacy's death, and the movie Phil Sheldon's hope for the MARVELS shattering in the aftermath of the Snap. Just like in the comics, where the people praised and admired the superheroes at first, but after the victories they then think of them as an afterthought, so to would mirror the reality's view on superhero movies as amazing but after the Phase 3, sinking into the back of the mind as life goes on. It would be a great perspective between the Phase 3 and Phase 4, with the society as the main characters, and the stars (RDJ, Chris Evans, etc) serving in the background. I don't know about you but this would be one hell of an experience.
This was followed by Marvel Ruins. It’s only fair we have a third one focused on the hardships the heroes must overcome so we can have “rise, fall, and redemption”
I was going to give props for saying "hyperreal" instead of "photoreal" but a quick search reveals they're all but interchangeable in the artform. This is unfortunate because I feel like a lot of people who talk about Ross' work are muddying the waters a bit regarding terminology. My understanding is that it's basic realism. A photoreal painting would be nearly indistinguishable from a photograph of the subject, and apparently a hyperreal painting would be nearly indistinguishable from a high definition photograph of a subject. As good as he is, and as hard as he works I don't think he has the time to do either.
You know, if pixar ever decides to make a marvel movie, they need to adapt this story. I don't know why but I think this is up to pixar's quality. Just get Pete Doctor to direct and it should be amazing
Id like to see you look at Rocket's solo series with Al Ewing and Adam Gorham. It seems like no one read it, but it was a six issue masterpiece of noir ation and filled with continuity references.
Some truly Fantastic stuff here, yes? As for definitive Marvel issues, it's a little tricky to decide as you always tend to default to your own personal favourites like Busiek's 'Untold Tales of Spider-Man' series, or Dan Slott and Mike Allred's Silver Surfer run which was mentioned in another comment, or the Spider-Man/Human Torch series that Slott also did, but here goes nothing, eh? Well, as much as I LOVE Spidey, Thor, Cap and all the rest, I'm an FF guy at heart; and while I'd love to fly around as carefree as Johnny Storm, deep down I'm more of a Ben Grimm kind of guy, and the two best Ben Grimm stories as far as I'm concerned are 'This Man This Monster' from issue 51 of the Lee-Kirby FF series, and 'In the Best of Families' by Karl Kesel and Stuart Immonen from the 1998 FF Annual, which explores a world in which the FF - and the rest of the Marvel Universe to boot - had aged in real time since their debut in 1961... The former is, of course, an iconic all-time classic, while the latter is both a loving tribute to Ben Grimm and the FF, and a story which, for various reasons which we won't get into here, made the strongest personal connection of perhaps any Marvel comic to my own life. Anyway, enough of my ramblings...Excelsior!!!

Sorry but the MCU no had the same magic and wonder that the Marvel Comics.
This was followed by Marvel Ruins. It’s only fair we have a third one focused on the hardships the heroes must overcome so we can have “rise, fall, and redemption”
God I love your damn videos so smooth keep them coming
Phil Sheldon gives new meaning to the camera never dies!
Amazing video, so glad I tuned in for the premiere
Glad you could be there for it!
Beautiful
Another outstanding entry! Please consider doing Sternako's Nick Fury.
Thanks! I've got a Steranko video that I'm hoping to do sometime this year.
Love this story
One of my teachers actually worked on Marvels as an editor...
oh god the existential crisis is hitting me now
This is one of my favorite pieces of literature
I’d love it if marvel studios made a short docuseries with Phil as the main character
Marvels remind of Kavalier & Clay so much! Deffo in my Top10 so thanks for this video!
Great book! The early 20th century New York focus on the dawn of comics definitely has a similar vibe.
That Iron Man sketch is clearly Timothy Dalton!
Alex Ross is one of my favorite artists period
Damn this is a really good video thanks for making it
Glad you're back!!!
Thank you
Marvels is the one comic every Marvel fan should read at least once.
Great video!
Please do one on dan slott and mike allred's silver surfer series!
This .. damn MARVELS is GOATED..
Personally, I want a fan made movie involving him documenting ever movie in the 3 phases of the MCU and have the eyepatch thing happened from Endgame
Amazing video. You are probably my favourite youtube channel. You will blow up soon! I’m telling you!
Maybe this is the best story of marvel comics .
Marvel Forever
Upon rereading it, I guess there is a Superman cameo.
Great video! I'll have to check this book out.
Thanks, man! It's a fantastic piece.
Awesome video, would love to see you do one about marvel ruins.
What if marvels went bad.
Such a weird book! Definitely Ellis at his most cynical.
Ever thought of doing a video covering the ongoing Immortal Hulk series?
Yeah, I love that series. I’m just not sure what I want to say about it right now since the series keeps evolving.
@8:36 is that Rev Norman McCay (Alex Ross' dad) making a cameo?
Any other novels with Ross on the art, i got marvels and KC, but i want more
I want Alex Ross to draw me like one of his French girls lmao
loooool
Very nice!
Love the channel
I wish phil sheldon wilk get his own spin off movie in live action! Or MCU
Alex ross is the greatest artist of art ever
Spider-Man life story
I feel so bad about the ruin universe after reading this😭
Seeing Philip sheldon happy to see a world of marvels he wanted makes marvel ruins even darker
It really does, one of the worst fates of the universe
I’ve heard people saying that Marvels is basically Marvels version of Kingdom Come
Well, both have Ross art and are focused on a more pure form of superheroes, but beyond that they’re fairly different
Matt Draper that is very true and also love your videos there all very good keep up the great work
Alex Ross is the Bob Ross of comics
Needs more happy little trees
You should do a video on ruins
Fuck I need to read this comic this video makes me want to read it!!!
Tom Hanks should play him...
Optimus Prime totally agree!About T.Hanks(eh) and Marvel:there's also an fancast idea about him as Uncle Ben
YAY
Marvel is humans becoming gods.
DC is gods becoming humans.
