    I totally get that lists like these are super subjective, but I really think Kingdom Come might have been over looked for this one. Very surprised it wasn’t number two. Needless to say, but I highly recommend it if there is anyone that is reading this that by chance hasn’t already read Kingdom Come.

    Excellent selection. Way to make the deep cuts! Question was a fantastic series. The Rorschach issue is especially surreal especially now with Doomsday Clock. Glad to see New Frontier towards the front.

    More Ewan! I love hearing Ewan talk about stuff, he's got such a smart way of looking at comics that I appreciate. I like Jules and Ben's biting sarcasm a lot but Ewan's thoughtful way of talking about the stuff he likes is great too.

  • @caperknight
    @caperknight 6 лет назад +14

    FYI Rorschach is the Question! DC didn't "hold out" on anything in the 80's when the buyout happened DC asked Moore to come up with a story idea what he gave them was the the original draft of Watchmen. The problem was DC just acquired these characters and the story left most of the unusable so some alterations were made. Blue Beetle became Night Owl, Captain Atom became Dr Manhattan and The Question became Rorschach.

  • @icerider50
    @icerider50 6 лет назад

    Glad i saw this vid, for years I've been wondering what was the spread that showed all the dc characters in that way, now i know it's from the new frontier....seems its worth the pick up even if i don't really follow comics that much

  • @TheTimeBomb75
    @TheTimeBomb75 6 лет назад +1

    When I first clicked on the video I thought oh, it's just gonna be Watchmen, The Killing Joke, The Dark Knight Returns, and etc. that we've all heard before.
    I was not expecting stuff like The Question or Static Shock considering their current status in the DC universe. Now I've got a few more things to add to my reading list. Good job!

  • @wasienka

    Mad props for choosing the Delano run on Hellblazer. People usually go for Ennis but Delano's writing is so much stronger. The political commentary might have gotten a tad outdated but the atmosphere he conveys is eternal.
    Good list overall. I just wish you recognized Rucka's work on WW (Hikateia maybe), Gotham Central or No Man's Land (my DC desert island pick).

    • @darrenrichardson6146
      @darrenrichardson6146 6 лет назад

      oh man, Gotham Central is an amazing series, it's hard to write a series about Batman without releying on him too much :D
      Brubaker (sp?) did an amazing job on it.

    I would have put Kingdom Come, Red Son, Killing Joke, Under the Red Hood and Injustice Year One

    • @vagrantmessiah
      @vagrantmessiah 6 лет назад +2

      Red Son is very underrated.

    • @Sacremas
      @Sacremas 6 лет назад

      Sure to the others, can't comment on Injustice, but Under the Red Hood? Eh, it's okay at best (and the "It would be too easy" monologue is brilliant, only beaten by a similar comment from Superman in Morrison's Justice League), but I'd rank Long Halloween, Hush, Arkham Asylum and even some of the recent stuff like the Court of Owls story that was Scott Snyder's start on it over it any day, and that's just the Batman stuff, let alone comics like JLA Tower of Babel or Rock of Ages, hell most of Grant Morrison and Mark Waid's JLA run in the 90s and early 00s and Geoff Johns JSA run for that matter, or all of Morrison's Doom Patrol or Animal Man, or the numerous other Vertigo stories like Scalped or Y the Last Man or Fables, or to go with Red Son other Elseworlds tales like The Nail, hell freaking Planetary is technically DC now with the folding in of the WildStorm universe.
      However unlike most of those, the first five on the list for the most part are lesser known comics that probably a lot didn't know about, and unlike the various other alternatives wouldn't be extremely easy to just stumble over in any self-respecting comic shop. For that reason I tend to ignore the first half of most of these lists as "information agenda" rather than facts, with only the last half really counting.

    • @vagrantmessiah
      @vagrantmessiah 6 лет назад

      Mark Waid's run of Flash was better than his JLA work in my opinion, Animal Man is another underrated character who is now once again stuck in Vixen's shadow.

    No Kingdom Come?

    • @suba6639
      @suba6639 6 лет назад

      I'm surprised that Infinite Crisis isn't in here.

    • @Sacremas
      @Sacremas 6 лет назад +1

      Thing with Infinite Crisis is that it's kinda too weird for most people to get, Morrison's All-Star Superman or even his Arkham Asylum book (which ALSO should be here) is very approachable in comparison despite dealing with deep stuff, but Infinite Crisis and Multiversity is just plain weird in comparison. Brilliant once you take the time to deep dive and look at not just the larger story but the story behind the story also and how everything connects, but it takes more effort.

    • @Sacremas
      @Sacremas 6 лет назад

      Kingdom Come should be here, somewhere in the #5-3 list (I'd rank it above ASSM). But I kinda think several of the first five on this is more to draw attention to stuff, Kingdom Come and Arkham Asylum are both better than both the Static and Question books and most of the GL/GA stuff, but it kinda worked to draw the attention of folks to those books where other candidates like those two or even something like Morrison's Animal Man or Doom Patrol are pretty easy to find on walking into any self-respecting comic store. I tend to only really take last few places seriously in these lists in general for that reason.

    • @asherslayden6318
      @asherslayden6318 6 лет назад +52

      Yeah, no. Rorschach is Alan Moore's way of showing that in the real world, "cool broody vigilantes" like Batman, Daredevil, etc. would actually be perceived as inhumanely brutal psychopaths with psychological problems and overtly bias political views.

    • @alt0799
      @alt0799 6 лет назад +19

      +Jake Johnson
      That's exactly what makes his character so good. He clearly ISN'T a hero and moreso a deranged and deluded psychopath, no better than the people he's brutally murdered. He's Batman if Batman went down the deep end and had a few (more) screws loose.
      That being said if people think Roarshach is cool then sure, all the more power to them. It's no different to people thinking that Punisher is pretty badass.

    • @deadpoolrockz6410

      He's responsible for the end of the world in his universe. Put him in that situation in the ending of The Dark Knight where Jim and Batman contemplate whether they should let knowledge of Harveys corruption go public, Rorschach would say yes.

    This is a pretty good list, and I'm glad there's some Sandman on it, but if I'm being honest, I really don't think Preludes & Nocturnes is the volume to put on there. Not that it's bad or anything, but it's probably one of the weaker volumes, especially compared to Season of Mists or World's End.
    But if we were to include non-DC comics on this list, I would absolutely put Bone, The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, and Maus on this list over a fair amount of the things here.

I think to do Fables right it would have to be really expensive, especially when they adapt the home lands and war and pieces arcs and pretty much everything afterwards. I think there are other Vertigo titles that are better than Fables and would be easier to adapt such as Scalped, Y: The Last Man, DMZ, and 100 bullets.

      But the concept is so unique, if Once upon a time didn't come out it would have been something nobody have ever seen before. And they had the budget to make Once upon a time so they could easily make Fables.

    _Justice_ by Jim Krueger and Alex Ross is fantastic. If you're a fan of the JLA or Silver Age DC then you will love this book.

    Five titles I would respectfully add to the list: V FOR VENDETTA, BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN, THE GOLDEN AGE (A tale that bridges the WWII era and the McCarthy/Space AGE era; just as good as NEW FRONTIER), BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE, and SUPERMAN: RED SON.

    As soon as you said “Static shock” I immediately started singing his theme song in my head (it resides with great “Saturday morning cartoon” themes like the gummy bears song & the gargoyle’s opening “poem”). Static Shock is in my top 10 favourite comic book heroes but he’s 1 of only 2 who are black (Green Lantern). There’s only 1 “Out” character too (Midnighter of The Authority)... there’s a couple of others with gay storylines tho.

    This was a solid list, but I'm sad how many of these are out of print (notably The Question and Static Shock).
    Saga of the Swamp Thing was also revolutionary enough that I'd probably have put it on my own version of the list.

    We all have our lists. I would have put the entire run on Sandman as the number one spot and I would have included the Ennis run on Hellblazer over the Delano run. Pretty much everything else you included was certainly significant....with the possible exception of All Star Superman which always read to me as far more calculated than heartfelt.Yes I know many will disagree...still.... Not only would I have never placed it more highly than Dark Night Returns, I would not have included it at all. Finally, I really think I might have included the Keith Giffen run on the Legion of Super-Heroes in which they were adults. This is aesthetically arguably the single most overlooked and underappreciated storyline in any DC comic book.

      Yeah, all of the characters were original someone else. But when DC decided they had other plans for the characters Alan Moore took his original idea and turned it up to 11.

    • @scarecrow99999
      @scarecrow99999 6 лет назад +3

      yeah alan moore had to create new characters cause he couldn't get the ones he wanted it went something like this
      Rorschach = The Question
      Comedian = Peacemaker
      Silk Spectre = Nightshade
      Dr Manhattan = Captain Atom
      Ozymandias = Thunderbolt (peter cannon)
      Nite Owl = Blue Beetle

    Hard Boiled. Frank Miller's best writing, and I can best describe Goeff Darrow's artwork as "Give Deep Thought a definition of Kipple, and a Printer." That's what it would produce. You know how you can go back, and see details you missed in a comic you read before? You can do that in every panel, every day, for the rest of your life. The social commentary, story, characterization, and (Dark) humor is all there too.

    What about the war comics? While everyone else may have been reading about Superman or Batman in the 70's or 80's, I gravitated to the war comics. Sgt Rock and the crew of the Haunted Tank were my heroes during that time. Where are the graphic novels of them?
