Could this BMW tempt me away from Audi ? - M340i XDrive Touring vs B9 S4 Avant

  • I am a big fan of a fast Audi estate. My current B9 S4 Avant is my second one. BMW have never really had an equivalent car...until now !
The brand new M340i XDrive Touring has the B58 3 litre straight six turbocharged petrol engine with 369 horsepower and 500Nm, all being fed through BMWs XDrive four-wheel drive system. Mega performance, practical and one of the best interiors in it's class.
In this video I put the new sportwagon from BMW up against my B9 3 litre V6 turbo and ask a simple question. Is this finally a BMW I would buy ?
A huge thanks to BMW UK for letting me experience the car for over a week.

13:35 It does change speed automatically , depending on road signs or nav data, but for some reason it’s set to manual by default. Just need to change under Driver Assistance settings. The feature I like compared to a 2016 Audi, is you can tell it to be plus or minus X mph when driving above or below 40mph. E.g 29mph when it’s a 30 limit or 75mph on a dual carriageway / motorway.

    • @Paradigm-kp9iu
      @Paradigm-kp9iu Год назад

More stock power, yes. However, more tunability? Nope.. Here in Europe, both vehicles will deliver roughly 410HP from a stage 1 tune (no hardware) at specialist tuners. However, the Audi will have more torque after the tune (620nm vs 600nm for the BMW). +56HP and +120nms for the Audi. +36HP and +80nms for the BMW. The 'old' supercharged V6 from Audi exceeds all of those numbers by quite a margin.
Edit: the old supercharged V6 exceeds the HP numbers, but has less torque.

High performance 3 series tourers have been around for a while, I’ve had my f31 335d Xdrive for over 4 years, best car I’ve ever owned, 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, average 37mpg, performance + practicality, mountain climbing torque and absolute driving pleasure on the twisties and motorways, best journey was Manchester to Monaco and back with 4 in the car family road trip holiday. Equip I’ve added, Mperformance kit, electric swivelling tow bar (for bikes and small util trailer), larger drilled vented discs, LCI light upgrades. Next upgrade is re-map to take 0-60 under 4 secs! Must have options in my opinion are Adaptive Suspension, HK Sound System, Pro iDrive system (larger screen) and Mper/Msport Brembo brakes

    In case this helps someone:
I got both cars (G21 m340i and b9.5 s4 with the second iteration of engine at 341hp diesel).
I did change my G21 for S4. Because of two things :
    - steering input: steering input on bmw is horrible
    - pedal position : on the long run bmw 3 series acceleration pedal is slightly not in the axes of your leg probably as legacy for heel toe. I have leg issues and this make it not so nice
    - siting comfort / general comfort : overall siting comfort and noise insulation are much better in the s4. Especially vs the touring bmw that have some low frequency issues
    - excitement : I don’t find personally any of those car a good week end car. If you have no choice going one vehicle both are very good all rounder, even tho I find the Audi better. Else just put extra in a Miata nd with either of the engine and have the best fun you will ever get.
    My reco :
Get a a4 45 tfsi avant as an all rounder. Note that some s4 diesel are very easy to get at close price.
    Buy a Miata
    Have best of both world.

I’d take run flats over a space saver wheel in an on-road puncture situation. Run flat = drive home (50mph), space saver = 30 mins on the hard shoulder with a jack and still can only trundle home. Also key points on 3-series boot space are you can put the net/parcel cover under the boot floor, plus you have the opening rear window, both a major plus over the Audi

    • @dayalanvelan3070

    • @nohedes
      @nohedes 4 года назад

I was responding more to the idea that a space saver was better than run flats (I thought implied in the video). I think RFTs were pretty poor in the early years but have improved considerably. I don’t think that the current 3-series is generally considered to have inferior ride or driving feel to the current A4 (although granted perhaps it would be better still on standard tyres!). Enjoyed the video by the way, good in depth review and very nicely filmed 👏🏻

The 335 has been available as a touring since the E91 (mid 2000’s). Whilst not AWD, it wasn’t that dissimilar to the S4 albeit it was turbocharged whereas they S4 of that era was initially a V8 but not a good car to drive.
The previous F30 was available as both a 335 and 340 so comparable to the S4 but RWD.

Hi Pete. Got you a mention on (Zach) Miniac's Live Q+A the other night, and got Ruby a mention too. Regarding rear seat room and comfort, do you carry measurements for your optimum position, and translate it to test vehicles, or is it just done by "feel"? Just thinking that being able to switch measurements easily between vehicles would be good for the driver, instead of best-guessing. It would also be good for rear passengers because they would have a legroom measurement as they do on planes. Vehicle testers, and comparisons, would be so much simpler too. Great video, but stick with the Audi....please.

    Nice review!
    I drive a 540i g30 and I love it!
This engine makes a very good car into a great car!
    My advice to you:
Keep the s4 ( nice too!) for the dogs and buy a m340i saloon for..... everything else!
It would be the perfect combination for a petrolhead!

Think I'd have to go for the M340i, although I do prefer the looks of the S4. Don't know about others but I've had a great experience with BMW dealers in the past so wouldn't mind having a look at this once they've taken a hit depreciation wise. If they made an M3 touring I'd be the first to put my name down! Great video!

Err... The M340i has 382 bhp and not what you quoted Pete.
When you opened both of the rear tailgates together, I was expecting to see a dog in each car :-))...
I'm loving the M340i BMW. And BMW probably make the best straight 6 cylinder engines. Whether that be a diesel engine or in particular, petrol engined.
I think with BMW's assisted driving, when you go into a part of road where the speed changes to the one you've set, by pressing/holding just one button, you can automatically change the speed to the current road speed.
Here's a quick tip if you have privacy glass for your estate car (Or any car with fold down rear seats!) and a black interior. When I used to go fishing, I had to fold the rear seats down and then put all my gear in. But it was all very visible still. So I got myself a cheap, black* fitted double bed sheet to cover all my gear. From the outside, you could even see anything was in the car and even putting your face against the window, you still would see anything bar the sheet.
    * The fitted sheet colour, of course, must be the same as the cars interior. Not just black :-))...

Nice review of the new BMW estate. I don't think people get what he is saying to them i have read most of the comments ect. Bmw have only ever made one estate car that matches audi S4 RS4 S6 RS6. The only estate car bmw made was the old M5 Estate. For example the bmw 330i est petrol or 330d - 335d estate are quick but not anything like an audi. Audi have had performance estate's for a long time bmw have just come out with an estate that can compete with the audi S4 now if they bring out an estate M3 or M5 then they have an estate car that can rival the Rs4/Rs6.

Got the saloon version in March, right before lockdown :( therefore not had an opportunity to take it on a long drive yet. Without doubt the best car I've ever owned, had 330d xdrive before it. Pre end of March BMW were virtually giving these away compared to the normal cost which made it attainable for work purposes. 549 deposit... 549 pm, 4yrs, 10k mile pa. That was out of BMW Stratstone Hull. MPG isn't great coming out of the 330d (almost half) but I knew that before buying it. MPG isn't the reason you'd ever buy this car. 9/10

No idea why this old vid popped up on my YT feed but...suffice to say its a good topic for discussion. I have had Audis since 1981 including original RS4 and RS6 and now have R8 and original UR Quattro 20v. In the last decade, Audi sales customer service just got worse and worse and I went to the 'dark side' and had BMW 645i and 635d. BMW customer attention was staggering in its attentiveness and the 645 was great with the active rear suspension and the 635d torque at 560Nm was staggering. I also noted the quality of materials dropping in Audi's eg aluminium painted plastic for control knobs v BMW aluminium. And the detents on BMW eg steering wheel buttons far better than Audi plastic feeling. Audi sat nav control just had to be different and awkward v BMW idrive which was the first and still the best. We have had 3er Tourings and now have X3, all very good cars and strong torque on the 2.0 diesel engine. I am now looking for a Z4 cabriolet. Re your final musing in why BM doesnt have a performance Touring product...they dont need to as Alpina and Schnitzer have that covered esp Alpina who have a UK outlet now and the D3 is the one to get with massive torque and great economy, just make sure to order the Alpina wheels :-)) Conversley, pretty much every Audi now looks like an RS with their S Line add on options and RS being applied to SUVs for heavens sake. How to dilute a brand :-( So with all the positives, sounds like you need to swap out into a BMW for a few years.

I think in future you should record a first impression snippet, literally that first 5 or 10 mins driving, then splice that into your main vid after driving for a week, that way you can see how your first impressions stack up against living with the car for the week, that in itself is both interesting and also valid lessons for all, for both good and bad things you feel about the first impression.

@@kidnapthemoneyy01 I've not had any issues. I have the waste gate rattle but you only really get it on startup and its never bothered me. Mine had a good service history and was well looked after. At 140k you'll always have bits to do, I've had a rear suspension mount go but that was a cheap fix, and I've got rid of the run flats now. Other than that, I just keep it well serviced, got the transmission oil done at 135k so that should be done for life now and get regular oil changes done and so far no probs at all. Mine has a tune on it, which is why it's as quick as the new cars, and it's a hoot to drive.

Currently I have a F31 335d Touring and absolutly love it, it took a few simple tweaks to get it the car it sould of been when it left the factory, such as sports springs, remap for gearbox and engine, windown tints and a lumbar support mod, custom subwoofer in place of 1st aid kit location :) but wow now the 0-60 is near as damn it sub 4 sec and on a cruise it does 50mpg (although I rarely see if you know what I mean) ....but I have to say it just lacks that final something, it's probably too competant and has little to no exciting engine noise, so this video was really interesting to me giving me an interesting choice when it come time to change the F31....does any one have any views good or bad and how these 2 would fair against a C43 amg estate?
