- Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession! A few weeks back I had the new Audi S4 Avant, and considering good friend of the channel PocketRockets owns a BMW 335d Touring - a rival - he thought he'd come down and show me why his car is better.
So, it's 'my' S4 vs his 335d - which is better? Take a watch of this to find out.

Were you driving the 335d in sport+ with the gear shift in sport? Seems like you were plodding along in comfort at 1750 revs. My 335d certainly provides a ‘kick’.

I have been wanting the 335d for years but ended up with a Passat BiTDi estate as my dad wagon at the start of this year. This was mainly because they tend to come more loaded when looking at the second hand market. My plan for the 335 was to stage 1 and swap the badge to 320d for added sleeperness :)

Currently weighing up the B9 Avant, F30 335d and 340i estates... choices!!
Depends on what you will be using the car for, if you crushing motorway miles constantly - F31 335D is the one! But if you're not a fan of diesel and want some noise/character, it would be the 340i but ensure you are prepared to visit petrol stations quite often 👀😂 Thanks for tuning in Jim!

Good wee comparison.I've had a 68 plate 335d Saloon for a year now.Basic sound system is really poor.You did well to spec the upgraded system.I came from a Golf with Dynaudio so it just hurts even more!.Bought it as an ex demo so i didn't have much choice.Only extras were rear view camera and the folding mirrors.
It's very good in a straight line, but i didn't expect anything else than a bit rolly polly in the bends.Still it's not too bad.
I'm getting about 41mpg with mine.Not to bad considering the performance.Sounds good too!.
Only fly in the ointment is the £475 a year VED.Brutal!.

I already experienced the Harman Kardon system in quite a few BMW's before purchasing so made it a no brainer to go for it 👍 There is plenty of aftermarket solutions available to help you out the audio quality! The rolly polly effect is evident I agree, especially when alongside the S4 but again a few products to help out! Thanks for watching Francis!

A remap is on the cards for ours! 👌🏼
I got the 330D and love it, but I do have a gripe about the driving position.With the seat up high (for visibility), the steering wheel is too low even at highest adjustment.Maybe it's just me.
@@ThePostie501 The driving position isn't too bad considering the vehicle type; I'd say if it was a Hot Hatchback that would make more sense although Audi managed to make it a lot lower with the additional controls to adjust 👍🏼Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts
Hi chaps....I really enjoyed this comparison video! Great to see you highlight the basic differences that will actually make a difference to real world ownership. I have to pull you up one thing though guys! You were reading out the stats for the 3 series 335d saloon and not the touring!? Touring is 4.9 0-60... Anyway, I would certainly take the 335d over the S4 any day. However, I think the real winner (money no object) would be the new M340d Touring. Nice!!

As an added note, I think that top speed as a stat is pointless due to current laws (except in Germany).
Yeah, the Top Trumps segment lasted longer than I was hoping, but I kept it full length as I enjoyed the banter, plus it would have made no sense if bits were cut out. Thanks for watching!

You need to run it again with the 335 in the correct mode. Mine gives a real kick up the rear in sport+. Cracking car. 335d every day over the S4

Looking at a 335d touring myself. Found out recently that the xdrive cars M-Sport all have standard suspension, not M-sport suspension. This is a plus for me and will certainly improve comfort and refinement.
It does make them ride a bit high though, look at the arch gap on the BMW
The BMW body roll means you spec'ed it with SE static suspension. You should have spec'ed it with static msport suspension or adaptive dampers. I have an F10 535d with static msport suspension and it was zero body roll although it is bigger and heavier...

I’ve got a 435d so probably some weight differences although same engine etc. Stick it at 70mph on cruise and over a 27 mile commute I get 60mpg easily & you’re only getting 45mpg? Stick it up to 80-85mph and then I get more like 45mpg.
Not sure how it's possible you're getting 60mpg but good on ya pal 👍🏼 Wish I was getting that! 🤣🙈
PocketRockets no idea either, just eco pro and stick it on cruise. Tend to get around 50-55 most of the time in normal motorway traffic 75-ish. Maybe I’m just lucky 😂 🤷🏻♂️
@@a20axf Oh, I never stick it in Eco Pro either Comfort or Sport Plus, although the only times I do put the car in Eco Pro is in 50mph average speed zones 🤣 Thanks for watching pal, all the best!
B at least! I can see how these were made for autobahn high speed cruising. Need a spring and damper change as the xdrive models are a bit too floaty but at least xDelete gives me rwd fun 👌🏻
Maybe you guys should try a real world 0-60 time , oftentimes it's different than what the manufacturer claims.

My bad! I will be filming a real world 0-60 of the F31 335D soon though, providing a before and after test when it eventually gets a remap 👍

Thanks for watching Abc D, it was a tough review for myself being the owner of the 335d but in the real world where 'value for money' becomes more evident, you can't fault the BMW even when Audi provide a more luxury & slightly improved driver's feel! Hopefully myself and Aaron can get the new 340D & S4 again to see how much difference there really is 👀All the best!
The 335d is best experienced with AS, without it does not drive quite the same, I have a 2018 M-Sport shadow edition with AS and it handles fantastic on 19' Alloys, just understand you'll get early 30MPG at best if driven in Sport regularly and mid to late 30's in Comfort mode.

Haven't tried one with AS so can't comment but I know the 18" make a big difference on ride quality - I get early to mid 40's in Comfort mode

Base prices aside a 335d with decent miles and a good spec is around 20K, with a stage 1 map make and some suspension mods. For the money would run rings around the S4. Unfortunately the interior isnt that easy to improve.

It's pretty easy. I put a android head unit and a 6WB virtual cockpit in mine. Makes a bid difference to the interior. I also coded the ambient lighting to make it brighter.

These two cars aren’t even comparable. This new facelift S4 is direct competitor to the M340i (G20). You could use the “lesser” M340D and it would completely destroy the S4.
Hi there, thanks for watching. The S4 is a diesel, though, so I wouldn't class it as a direct competitor for a petrol powered 3 Series. The new version of the 335D hasn't been released yet, which is one of the main reasons it did not feature in this video.

Think it was a big mistake not having adaptive dampers on the 335, in sport mine has all the rigidity you could ask for.... body roll doesn’t enter the equation! I had to sacrifice the heated wheel and the harmonn kardon though 😢
To be honest, the more time goes on I do wish we opted for the adaptive suspension; only because we are yet to get lowering springs bolted on 🙈 You're definitely missing out on the heated wheel in the winter, thanks for watching!

Get the bilstein dampers with eibech springs. The difference in the corners is huge.
The X Drive has standard suspension and not the M Sport suspension.

Yes & no, the M Sport variants use a different suspension setup compared to lower trim models
@@PocketRockets the springs are SE springs on any xdrive. Easily solved with springs but adaptive shocks are only marginally better so its better to replace both

Economy alone wins it with the 335d. Real world performance and economy trumps the Audi

@@andyhong8080 It's difficult to find somewhere you can do that legally, or for a price that's not expensive. I try and keep things as legit on my channel as I can, so illegal street racing is something I'd want to avoid.
I’ve just got a new S4 Avant, replacing my F31 330d. Interior is 100000x better than the F chassis and even the G chassis 3 series.
Despite all the car reviews suggesting otherwise 🤣 sure

Being an audi driver the most annoying thing is the gearbox delay when accelerating.

You CANNOT increase the Audi’s top speed to 174 mph.Not available from the factory as an option.

It's available as an option for the S6 on Audi's configurator - it's part of the Dynamic Pack is it not?
Edit: I take that back; after a fair amount of research (annoying that Audi don't list it on their website) the Dynamic Pack for the S6 seems to include Adaptive Air Suspension, the Sport Differential, Dynamic All Wheel Steering and TPMS. Apologies for the confusion.

It's either 4.8 - 4.9 seconds; not miles apart in all honesty; I did however film a 0-60 test with the 335d and completely blew those figures out the park 🙌 Thanks for watching

This is not a like for like comparison...you are testing the previous generation BMW against the new S4.The current most powerful diesel BMW 3 series estate is the 330 D X drive M Sport Plus edition at circa £50000 ..on the road which would be almost identical to the Audi and that BMW only has 265 HP against the Audi’s 347.And the Co2 rating is 165 gms for the BMW..I guess it would be higher still with a more powerful version.

Audi 0-62 4.9 that means audi wins tho
BMW faster and way better fuel economy.... easy win for the BMW
I wouldn't say it's an easy win, the Audi has noticeably more torque and there's barely in it when it comes to the 0-62 times. The BMW is defintely better in some aspects, but I wouldn't say it's an EASY win. Thanks for watching Rodney.
@@CarObsession I am not saying the Audi is a bad car, no way, and I had my choice of both and easily would enjoy an Audi. I chose the BMW as it essentially does all the Audi does at way less cost. I will say this though I drove mine from Oxford to north of Moscow and back (Germany Poland Estonia out and Finland, Sweden, Denmark back) and if you do more than 8 hours in the saddle at 6ft 4 you start to struggle in the BMW. My biggest day was 16 hours and man alive that was not comfortable. Audi great car but fuel economy makes it a no brainer to me. I do not know of any car that offers the all round package the BMW 335d does.

Audi interior nicer. Bmw gearbox better more consistent. Audi timing chains are useless. Known weak spots at as little as 60k.

Depends what model, some use the proper quattro, some use the haldex which they still call it quattro, audi s3 and rs3 and the tt use Haldex, the bigger ones use the proper quattro.

Already done a superchips convert won the 335d. Just steps the torque curve up 120 nm all over. Phenomenal tarmac ripping result. 👍👏👏
