Ive owned 2 of these in past 6 years and these are the things id consider when buying this car Things that are a must in my opinion Heated seats Harmon kardon sound system Electric seats Electric mirrors Pro nav M sport+ braking system (the one that supports the 19 inch alloys) Adaptive suspension (rare but a must in my opinion) Get a 65 plate or higher as it comes with the newer led lights that look way better than the older in my opinion or newer Adaptive led lights are even better. If want vented and groved performance brake disks just know they have significantly more wind noise to them due to the holes in the discs compared to the standard disks without the holes but eventually you get used to it. Removing the dpf and egr is a must in this car doing that will give you so much more reliability in the long term however you need to go to a place that know what they are doing. You will also need to get it tuned after the removal. Costs around £350-£500 for removal and tune usually Id also consider when getting this car to get 4 brand new tyres all the same brand and and getting the tracking done by a specialist that does 4 wheel drive cars. Will help with mpg also the feel of the car and less wear on other car parts. Id reccomend a gearbox service on this car also if your milage is above 60k as it will make your gearchanges super smooth and it will eliminate the jerk you get in these cars when you come to a stop. Lastly id change the oil and oil filter along with the air filter every 5k instead of 10k might cost alittle more however its not too hard to do yourself if you have the time and space. My current 335d is on 160k milage and still going strong
Good read and info im picking up one next week f31 335d (65 plate) has all then options above. Only thing that needs done is all new matching tyres. I will get the fluids done all round for peace of mind.
@darrenviljoen2522 nice that sounds like a good spec. You will enjoy it. I also forgot to add I only use shell v power diesel and shell ultra helix engine oil as it just makes the car run smoother in my opinion
Depending on your needs, I would also like to add active cruise control to the list, if you have to daily drive the car through heavy traffic, it makes it a breeze and changes your life, but it is a rare option from what I have seen. I personally have a 430d and been lucky to have everything mentioned except adaptive suspension, but has a sunroof which was another one of the things I was looking for. For me, its the perfect mix of a comfortable car and fun car that is able to kick its rear out if wanted to.
I have a 335d Xdrive on a 67 plate. done 16k miles in 12 months, averaging 39mpg. Also enjoying the car. It will do 165mph INDIATED on in private track obviously. It hits 60 in 4.6secs. Its a weapon! I love it!
I can well believe it will hit 165 indicated (on that private track), and pull very strongly all the way there! Must find a private track suitable to try it!
Great cars, mine is currently running a stage 1 map (400BHP - 770NM Torque) 0-60: 3.9/4.1 surface depending, ultimate daily in my opinion, most of my friends drive petrol performance cars (C63, RS3, S3, M140I) ect and they all say my 335d is the silent assassin. Great video! Very informative!
I've had mine stage one remap and the gear box remap and get about 380bhp and 700nm my 0-60 is 4secs.. the car is rapid and car beat S4 etc and keeps up with most or beats most as I've got the same as you.. friends with the audis etc.. 👍
Got one of these on a 67 reg, now on a private plate. In Mineral Grey colour. Quite a basic spec but I plan to add things to it. I've already upgraded the business nav non-touch 6.5 inch screen to 8.8 inch touch screen (OEM part from BMW not an android screen) and added fullscreen CarPlay. Mine only has the manual seats, no reverse camera, no adaptive cruise control, no heated steering wheel or heated seats but I plan to retrofit heated seats once I've sorted other things out. It does have standard cruise control and parking sensors of course. I have absolute babied the car since I got it and it's had a full service, major service and 3 oil changes in the 30,000 miles or 15 months I've owned it. In the next week it's going for another oil service and the following week a walnut blast, replacement glow plugs are on order as the previous owner was a right cheapskate and hardly maintained it at all (they had fitted tyres without TPMS sensors on runflat tyres - which is actually a legal requirement. I had these sensors bought and added at my cost, they hadn't bothered to take it for it's EGR outstanding recall either).
Sounds like a great project car! I have taken my 65 reg 335d F31 from the UK to Germany and I will now upgrade it a bit - e.g. radar cruise control. Will be lots of fun - won‘t sell this one. New BMWs just aren‘t the same - the F31 is one of the last true classic BMWs in my view, and the 335d is a great package.
I love mine just a shame it's costing me a fortune to run it... I've spent in excess of £500 in diesel in the last 3 weeks! That said I do usually cover 1800 - 2000 miles per month.... it's a thirsty beast. Need to get mine de-coked with a walnut blast as it's now covered 92,200 miles and to my knowledge it's never had one. (I've had it for 16 months and since the 59,000 mile mark). I keep toying with the idea of replacing it with an electric car, something like a Polestar 2 or a Tesla, the lease would only cost perhaps £100-£200 more than the monthly car payment anyway but I'd save hundreds each month on fuel.... but I full well know if I replaced it with an electric car I'd regret it. @@thereallotharmatthae
I’ve just bought an M340d and is sensational performance and economy wise. On UK roads it’s so easy to achieve 50+mpg with a 0-60 in 4.5secs of better.
Yes I do feel like if I went to an M340i I’d miss the grunt and economy of the diesel. Maybe the M340d is the answer. How do you find the brakes, not the BMWs strong suit generally?
ive got a 15 plate 335d x drive in which ive covered 10 k miles in the last year , im running a stage 1 map 360bhp and 700nm .in my opinion bang for the bucks theres nothing to touch them , it really is a car for all occasions , cruise effortlessly on the motorway and when in sports plus mode will destroy 95% of whats out there while returning over 40mpg
@@lukeskywalker1666don’t talk out your cheek hole mate 😂 335d stage 1 would leave m140i off the line, and in the UK that’s what matters.. off the line 😊
Its all about 4 wheel drive, whether that be xdrive/quattro etc, they give you so much confidence when driving in bad conditions, it's great! Truly the best cars to drive when wanting performance and good handling and grip in the wet.
Had a 16 plate f30 335d for 5 years now. As many say here, I cannot find anything to replace it with. A long drive will give over 50 mpg but it drops to 12 on track 😊 Faults, the egr valve recall and they had it so long waiting for parts they said the discs had corroded and replaced the discs and pads for free. Biggest issue I have is tyre noise on some surfaces and I'm running ps4s. Better on the winter 18's I use Services at the dealer are £150 for minor and £350 for major services. You don't need the emissions and other checks they will try and charge you for, that's part of the mot and you can reset it on the idrive yourself
That’s just reminded me they forgot to tighten the air intake clamp when they did the EGR, although better than having a ‘burny’ 3 series! I think you’re right about the extra check, I paid it last time and they didn’t spot that the washer jets had blocked up, waste of money I think and probably a less comprehensive check than I’d regularly do myself.
Just bought a M340D after owning a M140i. Totally different performance delivery whilst posting very similar 0-60 times. The M140 is like a wild horse compared to a tamed animal in the 340D. The M140 requires concentration and commitment to deploy its full power whereas the 340D is point and squirt
I can imagine! That point and squirt performance is consistent in all weathers I bet, the diesel makes it easily accessible but I do think it means something is missing in terms of working at it, maybe an M340i is a half way house? I’d like to find out.
@@rulleh in certain frames of mind the M140 was amazing. Revving it out with that glorious engine note was addictive. The 340D is a better all rounder, much more comfort and the torque makes quick progress effortless. In these times I enjoy the fact that filling up gets me 500 plus miles.
@@stuartchristie654 Thinking of changing my M140i for a 335d Xdrive, getting 30MPG when driving very sensibly isnt the one and when i do have abit of fun thats soon back down to the 20s. either that or a newer shape 330i not sure yet
@@Geeman300 I had a 430d whilst they were doing a bit of work on my car, the engines are chalk and cheese. The 335d would be the better option, if you can drive both try them, the twin turbo versions have torque everywhere and feel a lot more responsive
I have a 2017 530 d RWD stage 1 306 bhp with 700 nm this week I am getting a x3 x dive 35d I will stage 1 tune on this gives it 360 bhp and 700 nm Can’t wait.
Excellent review thank you. Have had mine from new and covered 44000. Beautiful understated car that is a joy to drive. I have no Intention of making a change as I can see nothing I prefer. 35:29
I’m with you there, mine is now 6 years old, fully paid up and nothing similar is better enough to dig out a monthly payment for. Maybe there might be a 10 year ownership review?!
Really useful video thanks. Just picked up one of these and I love it. Despite it needing some warranty work after a day (new tyre valve and leaking rear diff). The brakes seem really good so far though.
Glad you’re liking yours. I think the brakes are probably ok, they just didn’t stay as consistent on mine as our Mercedes’ have always been, the discs tend to corrode more so I’m thinking the quality just isn’t as good. I haven’t got a solution to mine going off really, we’ll see how the new discs and pad last! Happy 335ing!
Watching this makes me glad I bought a 330d with the msport plus pack over the 335d. The 330d seemed much more exciting in the test drive, the 335d being too smooth. It wasn't about ultimate speed for me.
Drove a 430d before getting the 335d, absolutely great fun, wasn’t missing much but the 335d was on a special deal, otherwise I was going for a 430d of some kind. I always suspected the 30d might be nicer to drive most of the time as I understand it’s got a more simplified turbo set up, have sometimes found the 335d fussy at low speeds unless in eco pro mode with a very soft throttle map.
I tried a 430d before I got mine and was very happy with a 30d but then the 335d was an unbeatable offer. In some ways the 30d might be nicer to drive in most scenarios but the bit extra in the 35d is addictive. Latest 30d has nearly as much power though so best of both worlds.
@@thatcarnutsguy I bought my 335d GT and love it. It's not as slick as proper F30 but the gaping boot and extra legroom is a winning combination for family life. Two trips to the DIY store this week and still a 5 second 0-60 time is everything I need. It's still a little thirsty but driving slowly helps pull that back. The nice thing about a fast car with torque driven slowly is that the power is always on tap. In a normal car then getting speed back takes time so I actually drive more quickly in a less powerful car.
Wait what! If that is true then this is a prime example of “should have read the instructions”, although I was sure I had. I’m off out to try that immediately :)
@@thatcarnutsguy Haha, glad to be of service! I only found it as mine has it had a minor front end bump and keeps telling me active cruise cannot be engaged.
Great car, but for me a RWD only model with lowered M sport suspension would have been perfect. I know traction from the line wouldn't be as good, but it would have been lighter, more fun to drive, looked better and been more economical. I guess a 330d with a remap would be a good alternative.
I’ve often thought that about a RWD 330d. Most of the time it’d have enough traction anyway and it would be a more honest drivetrain and steering set up in the spec you suggest. All wheels driven does give a zero thinking effort ability to drive round anyone on a wet day which is handy on the misery of a wet commute, but yeah I think there’s a lot that would be more satisfying without that complexity and some of its compromises!
Looking to swap my Cupra 4drive petrol estate (300bhp), I test drove an F30 335d XDrive (310bhp) which, on paper, was just as fast but more economical. However, in reality I was underwhelmed by it's performance. Standalone it was a cracking car, but regardless of the quoted figures, it didn't feel as fast off the line, so I didn't make the move. Later, I looked at a Volvo V60 D6 AWD Plug-In Hybrid (285bhp) which was supposedly only 1 second slower to 60 with a ridiculous claimed 150mpg, but again I was unbelievably disappointed - it felt like an 8 second car, not a 5.8 second car, and real world mpg is reportedly 50-70mpg if driven extra carefully, barely better than the BMW. I sold the Cupra in the end while the market was still high, and moved away from a performance car, but now the itch has returned and I'm again looking at an F31 335d XDrive estate with a view of mapping it to 400bhp. I briefly considered a Jaguar iPace, but given the stories about fires and stuck throttles, you won't ever see me in a fully electric car, so the BMW appears to be the best option all round for decent enough economy, and power to overtake when you need it.
I've thought the same thing where would I go after. I have the bigger brake option, adaptive suspension, fold down rear seats, factory tints, H&K, net in the boot, the extra lumbar support on front seats. Stage 1 map and gearbox map, and ACS springs. Dimming wing mirrors...adaptive xenons... I have park assist but never used it. I'm missing heated seats and heads up display and the powered bootlid. I am also missing 360 camera view which would have been nice. I don't have adaptive cruise either or lane keep.. if I was swapping to something else I'd need to be changing my life and need a bigger car or something. I brought 4 decent sized passengers on a long journey who were still shocked by the acceleration so I don't think the weight of the car is too much outside of really twisty roads where its still fine but hard to predict how much grip you have before it lets go. I can't see what I would swap it for
I’ve had a 2015 65 plate LCI 335d touring for the past 5 years in a very similar specification & still adore it! 😘, have absolutely no plans to sell it even after the 5 years & it’s just turned over 50000miles. The one & only issue I’ve had with mine was one of the electric tailgate struts failed which was covered by warranty & repaired quickly. I do agree with you regarding the brakes & the start/stop torque converter jerkiness, although I’ve changed the pads & discs all round recently & they seem a bit better but an expensive job as you say. I’ve opted to stick with runflats as my wife is the primary user & I like the security of knowing she’s not going to get stuck anywhere with the kids, although I’ve not had a single puncture yet🙄🤷♂️🤣
The gas strut on mine has started to go, obviously not powered but just makes the boot opening a bit slower, apparently it’s common. My reasons for maybe keeping the runflats were the same as yours, but most punctures I’ve had have allowed time to get somewhere before full deflation. I do wonder whether they’ve got better since the tech has improved, and you can get a Michelin PS4 runflat which is probably way better than the original Bridgestones, which were poor. As you I’ve struggled to find a replacement car that will give anything more, so it’ll stick around for a while longer!
@@thatcarnutsguy Mine came with Contisport 5 runflats which I’ve been very happy with to be fair but it is needing a new set & I’ve been considering changing them for Falken Azenis FK510 which are attractively priced & seem to get good reviews. If there good enough for M539 restorations, there good enough for me 😂
This is my next car I'm Gona get but I'm getting the m performance kit and m breaks aswel I'd also map the car and box and stick some lowering springs on
Love the straight 6 BMW engines, used to own a 530i Auto & it was silky smooth, can't believe you haven't got heated seats in 335d X-drive that's top of range !, Have you considered a Mercedes C250 4-Matic ? Quick , Frugal , My Autoguard warranty runs out next month only used it once & they we're great instantly agreed & pay £350 of £400 bill within 2x hours, see what they quote to see if i carry on ?? Great video
Yes I loved my old c class, have looked at the C43 and even the C63 which is now getting very good value for money, as possible replacements. Also really like the looks of the latest C class and they seem to come with everything on the higher specs, no nonsense about charging extra for heated seats, they seem expensive in comparison until you spec the bmw to be equivalent. I haven’t heard of autoguard so will have a look. The BMW warranty seems reasonable but I’ve never had to use it, touch wood, and of course until you do they’re all a waste of money I suppose :). Thanks for the feedback!
Im planning to get a 335d (maybe 435d). What are some common faults and major faults i should be aware of? And what to check/look out for. Also looks like im probably going to be able to afford a 60k-70k mileage 335d...if lucky..maybe 55k. Is that too high and risky? Also heard some people mention an EGR recall. And another recall. How do we verify if the previous owner undertook the recall?
Was going to go xdrive this time but I opted for my 3rd e92 335d. Just didn't feel as special in the xdrive. Alot of people go down th f10 m5 route after xdrive 335d's. Good luck brother
Yes the F10 M5’s were starting to look great value until the price of everything went nuts. Always wanted an M5, just can’t imagine a scenario where it wouldn’t be financially ruinous :) Massive respect for channeling all that torque through the rear wheels in 3 e92’s.
@@thatcarnutsguy thanks mate. Taking this one little further this time. Should be around 400bhp and 850nm by the end of the month. My last one wS written off by a blind pensioner on boxing day. That one was 2008 with 85k on the clock....and it had adaptive cruis....on an E series car...! That was mental.
Crikey, 850nm!!! Didn’t know they had adaptive as an option, impressive. My E90 felt like it would live forever, indeed it’s still going somewhere at 15yrs and 130k miles!
Thanks for your review Carnuts Guy. As well as steering and noise differences, how is the subjective comfort of the PS4 tyres compared to the RFTs, at low & fast speeds, ripples, spd humps, etc.? I'm speculating the run-flats on 18s could like going to 19s with normal tyres, maybe?? I had the F31 Touring 335dx MSport twice on short lease - a 2015 one that had the issue of the heater-a/c coming-on everytime i started-up the car not matter the state it was in when i switched it off, also it's halogen headlights were awful! Poor brightness and poor reach at speeds! However it was a really blinging white one with Oyster interior! When the 18mth lease ended i got another one for almost 2yr - 66-plate LCI Estoril Blue with Saddle Brown interior looked perfect, no probs with the A/C unit here i found it wore-out it's front tyres seemingly very quickly after about 15K miles - even wear - whereas the rears had loads left even after some Sport+ rear-out fun! LED highlights were also an improvement. I had to give it back as at the time i couldn't afford the final payment, but i wish i had but it on a longer lease with maintenance and at the end i could've afforded the final payment as the deal at the time was fantastic, the last before the tax change made it unaffordable! For a diesel the mpg looks on the low-side but for the performance a petrol couldn't compete and the bags of torque made it eminently drivable for long & short distances - i tried 300bhp petrols but they just felt shouty & lacking in comparison. Took the white one London to Scotland & back and the blue everywhere else - perfect. SE suspension was rolling on slip-roads and the like but on bumpy B-roads it was perfect. However i was getting lower back pain after a while, but after i think it may've been due to the tilt i had the seat at. Run-flats a little hard at town speeds. If i could've chosen again i would've added electric seats (manual height adjust was awkward!), upgraded speakers (base spec was too weak!) and lumbar support. I had specced both heated seats and heated steering wheel on both.
Also i'd like to add that apparantly the "adaptive" suspension is rubbish - too stiff in Sport mode and too soft in Comfort. With my now 220i Active Tourer with the on-off "adaptive" suspension i can tell you that it's a similar system aand it is indeed as described above and after 3 years it has become seriously unstable! So u didn't miss-out on adaptive, the base suspension is actually great even if i softens-up over time - much easier to change the passive dampers out to Bilsteins or Konis than swap-out unloved adaptives.
I found the non run flats generally softer and more pleasant all round, most surprising was the effect on brake progression and feel, maybe the world of runflats has moved on, I hope so. Not enough brown or unusual interiors, it would be my spec on an m340i I think. Unfortunately adaptive dampers are standard on the 340 so hopefully they’ve improved somewhat, something to be said for the simplicity of a traditional passive damper, when they leak they’re broken and you can swap them, never sure what the electronic bits in an active one are really doing, although you can probably tell when a passive is past it’s best without a leak, plus much cheaper to swap. I’ve thought about a suspension refurb at some point soon, maybe even an upgrade, but the originals are a good compromise. It will be difficult to ditch the diesel grunt for everyday use if I do jump to petrol, just feels like last chance to have one, for old times sake!
That's very interesting about the braking progression as my 220iAT's brakes are dud though I think the energy recovery system on the rears (even though it's not a hybrid...) has an effect too. Coincidentally my current F45 AT had the same tyres fitted OE as the F31 - Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT - and the size the same as the F31s fronts @ 225/45R18 so a direct comparison and the tyres at the front lasted longer on the F45 at around 23K miles even though it's a FWD. When I replaced the F31 fronts the fitter said the wear-rate was probably down to the heavy weight of the car. On the F45 they fitted Continental runflats (lease company's choice) and they were more comfortable and quieter and less tramliney the the B-stones, I not sure about their performance otherwise as I swapped them to the rear for wear reasons AND coz the one wheel vibrates due to the fitter buckling the wheel a tad struggling to get the Contis on! Also to note that in 2020 [I think] BMW stopped fitting RFT as OE on many models (including the F45) apparently for WLTP reasons. I had a Merc 220CDI estate for while, took it round Ireland, and even though it had less bhp than the F45 it seemed a nicer touring drive that I'm liking down to the greater torque of diesel and longer wheelbase chassis. In a way hybridisation of petrol drivetrains is a good idea to add low-rev torque like a diesel but weight & implementation is a factor and if u have to plug-it-in too that not great.
One interesting thing about going to PS4 non RF was the wear rate front and back reversed. The S001 lasted nearly 40k on the rear, 20k on the front and the PS 4 did 20k rear and would have done closer to 40k front if the outside edge hadn’t worn prematurely which seems to be a feature of BMW and my old C220, despite efforts to keep tracking to factory spec. The change to slight toe out (within spec) seems to have helped but time will tell. I assume the switch in wear rate was down to completely changing the ability and balance of the car with the extra grip, although PS4 overall probably wore slightly quicker as the grip must come from somewhere and it’s probably a softer compound. The original S001 were total garbage IMHO, bordering on a scary lack of front end grip/actually any end grip!
Yeah but it would have been £350 more if I’d bought them 😂. Some complicated maths went into that decision, and over the original 2 year period it was like £8 a go for a warm arse… riddled with regret now it’s 6 years old though… but it was a rip off…
Are you sure the adaptive cruise can’t be turned into an ordinary cruise control? In my mini F56 you do that by just keeping one of the cruise control buttons pressed.
You’re right, someone pointed that out to me, if only I’d done a video 7 years ago when it was new 😂. Anyway to be honest I haven’t used the cruise in ages, I’ve preferred the speed limiter when I’ve been on longer trips. Actually not sure I’d get adaptive again. I’ve used Volvos pilot system in a couple of cars recently and it’s ok but I find myself zoning out, a couple of videos are coming for those cars!
Will the adaptive cruise control bring the car to a complete stop and then go again after 3 seconds if the car in front moves on? (like the VW system).
Yes it will. May not be exactly 3 seconds but it’s in that order. After the 3 seconds (ish) you just have to tap the throttle and it’ll set off and continue doing it’s thing. You can also press a button but I forget which one, maybe RES.
@@thatcarnutsguy I have it on a Mk7 Golf GTD and it works really well. Only time its done anything really unnerving was going down the A1, 2 lane section. A car in front was slowing to turn off into a petrol station with a very small slip road and a 90 degree turn in. I knew it woud be gone before there was a problem but the cruise saw a pretty much stationary vehicle infront of me so braked hard. Lesson learned there - just keep your foot on the accelerator if that sort if thing happens and it's all good.
Yeah, even with the system off the safety side of it sees stuff and has an occasional panic, the favourite being approaching a roundabout, usually if it spots something big like a lorry. Sh!t myself every time it jumps on the brakes!
Have you ever had any problems with the sos call light coming on which blocks everything on the dash.. mine randomly comes on and it sometimes stays for a which then will clear sometimes.. very annoying.
Never as an issue like that. I assume you’ve checked that the button and flip down cover are as they should be? Failing that it sounds like an electrical gremlin which can be tricky as I found out with the inside light issue.
I went from a f30 335d to a golf r estate MK7.5…. Much cheaper to maintain and similar power but better sounding. Must admit the ZF was a better box IMO but the golf r is better in most other categories, again IMO
Was talking to a friend today who’s gone from a golf R to a new X5 with all the toys, summary was he wants to go back a golf R asap. “X5 is good but I loved the golf R more” :). It does seem like a whole lot of car, nearly got one myself a few years ago, and I do think it’d be nice to have all the golf R good bits without the BMW costs.
@@thatcarnutsguy Had the 335 for 3 years and loved every minute of it. Just needed a bigger boot and wanted petrol. BMW parts and prices are just ridiculous now. Great video anyway 👍🏻
I'm on here after having a 2014 335d on hire in 2014 and looking for a Golf R as the next daily but remembered how much i loved driving one of these 🙃😁
Short journeys on local roads around 34mpg. Not bad really! Long run 100+ miles at 70 ish easily 48. 5 year average 39.8mpg, 50 mile commute and driving with gusto!
If you're trying launch control etc and heavy on the Accelerator which I was at first you'll be in the 20s mpg but driving normally I find I'm around 32-33 mpg.. I've never been in the 40s mpg however I don't do many long drives on motorways. Love the car in general though it's a rapid and comfortable car. 👍
I got mine from carparts4less (seemingly part of euro car parts) and the part number was 10411194A. Be careful though, the part numbers can be tricky. Brembo has a good site with a catalogue as details Techincal drawings which I recommend checking, likewise the bmw parts site is also useful as a source of info, but the whole part number thing is generally tricky if you’re not just sourcing from bmw. Good luck

Ah yes I remember those days, in fairness I’ve got nearly twenty years on you but insurance has bottomed out around £5-600/yr irrespective of car value, and that’s with 10 years no claims. I do remember a lot of cars went from uninsurable to acceptable around 24 years old, my first performance car was a focus ST which just all of a sudden became doable at 24 and I jumped at it! It was very carefully specced! Fair point on the Harmon kardon, that was a miss, as for the seat heat, that was pure belligerence as they should have been included and I don’t find them that useful in this country. I maintain the smaller wheel is the way to go in the UK.
Ive owned 2 of these in past 6 years and these are the things id consider when buying this car
Things that are a must in my opinion
Heated seats
Harmon kardon sound system
Electric seats
Electric mirrors
Pro nav
M sport+ braking system (the one that supports the 19 inch alloys)
Adaptive suspension (rare but a must in my opinion)
Get a 65 plate or higher as it comes with the newer led lights that look way better than the older in my opinion or newer Adaptive led lights are even better.
Costs around £350-£500 for removal and tune usually
Id also consider when getting this car to get 4 brand new tyres all the same brand and and getting the tracking done by a specialist that does 4 wheel drive cars.
@@psing948 yeah i usually run premium fuels. S3 at the moment and dc5 luckily got momentum 2 minutes from my house.
@darrenviljoen2522 yeah man tesco moment for petrol and shell v power for diesel all the way 👌
Depending on your needs, I would also like to add active cruise control to the list, if you have to daily drive the car through heavy traffic, it makes it a breeze and changes your life, but it is a rare option from what I have seen.
Likewise. 67 reg. Did a long run yesterday and average 40.9MPG over a 4 hour drive on various roads including Motorways, A and B roads.
Let me know if you ever want to sell it this is my dream car
Reliable John ?
@@Thuds593 so far so good, water pump bearings are a little noisy but other than that all good. I change the oil every 7-8k though.
That’s the joy of the thing, can look like a 320d but on a wet day leave a RWD M3 in a sprint! Plus 40mpg! Engage smug mode…

It’s a ruthlessly efficient bit of kit for sure!
Love to see your diesel try against a stage 1 m140i intact a stock m140i would obliterate stage 1 335d
@@lukeskywalker1666don’t talk out your cheek hole mate 😂 335d stage 1 would leave m140i off the line, and in the UK that’s what matters.. off the line 😊
Quick question can the standard gearbox handle the stage 1 torque or do you have to change it? Thank😊
@@IDRIS-wl3qy it can handle it easily, it can manage 1000 newton metres I read somewhere
A long drive will give over 50 mpg but it drops to 12 on track 😊
Faults, the egr valve recall and they had it so long waiting for parts they said the discs had corroded and replaced the discs and pads for free. Biggest issue I have is tyre noise on some surfaces and I'm running ps4s. Better on the winter 18's I use
Services at the dealer are £150 for minor and £350 for major services.
Same here…. Nothing to replace a 335d F31 out there either for me.
Wicked review. Made my mind up on getting one soon.
Thanks for the feedback, hope you get sorted with one soon!

I’m with you there, mine is now 6 years old, fully paid up and nothing similar is better enough to dig out a monthly payment for. Maybe there might be a 10 year ownership review?!
Same my man! Nothing nicer is out there.
Great looking roads, nice drive
Watching this makes me glad I bought a 330d with the msport plus pack over the 335d. The 330d seemed much more exciting in the test drive, the 335d being too smooth. It wasn't about ultimate speed for me.
Drove a 430d before getting the 335d, absolutely great fun, wasn’t missing much but the 335d was on a special deal, otherwise I was going for a 430d of some kind. I always suspected the 30d might be nicer to drive most of the time as I understand it’s got a more simplified turbo set up, have sometimes found the 335d fussy at low speeds unless in eco pro mode with a very soft throttle map.
just buying a 335d from this year, I'm looking forward to it having only test driven the 330d....
You can go back to standard cruise by holding down one of the distance buttons until the green cruise indicator comes on.
Wait what! If that is true then this is a prime example of “should have read the instructions”, although I was sure I had. I’m off out to try that immediately :)
The owners manual confirms you are absolutely spot on about that! I have let myself down here… 😂
@@thatcarnutsguy Haha, glad to be of service! I only found it as mine has it had a minor front end bump and keeps telling me active cruise cannot be engaged.
Heard they can be tricky to recalibrate when they've been bumped, not something I thought about when ordering
I can't see what I would swap it for
That’s the dilemma
If there good enough for M539 restorations, there good enough for me 😂
A good and honest review 📦✅

This is my next car I'm Gona get but I'm getting the m performance kit and m breaks aswel I'd also map the car and box and stick some lowering springs on
You won’t be disappointed. The M Performance brakes are meant to be an improvement. I think some EBC pads might be the answer too!
Looking at buying one and only want one with heated seats 350 for them seems a no brainer tbh
Love the straight 6 BMW engines, used to own a 530i Auto & it was silky smooth, can't believe you haven't got heated seats in 335d X-drive that's top of range !, Have you considered a Mercedes C250 4-Matic ?
What roads are you driving on, at the stsrt of thr video please?

Crazy buy a car of this value and worrying about 350 for heated seats 😢
Yeah but it would have been £350 more if I’d bought them 😂. Some complicated maths went into that decision, and over the original 2 year period it was like £8 a go for a warm arse… riddled with regret now it’s 6 years old though… but it was a rip off…
Are you driving around Buxton at all because the roads look very familiar to me
Maybe! ;) You’ll have to watch some more videos to find out!

Great review. Still driving the same beauty?
Yes I am, should probably do an update video soon

It’ll be a good decision… just make sure you get one with heated seats 😬
@@thatcarnutsguy I'm a skinny chap and always cold so be a good idea 💡 just worried in current climate will it be 5k cheaper in 6 months
I’m afraid that might well be the case, although it might not happen quite so quick given new metal is still on long lead times
How much was the adaptive cruise as an option? Very rare on the early F30s
From memory it was £600, never been sure if I'd get it again, but at the time there were lots of 50mph road works and it was useful for that.

Well spotted!
I'm on here after having a 2014 335d on hire in 2014 and looking for a Golf R as the next daily but remembered how much i loved driving one of these 🙃😁
I actually went from a mk7 golf r to a 435d gran coupe 🫣
Hi mate what was mpg driving around town
Short journeys on local roads around 34mpg. Not bad really! Long run 100+ miles at 70 ish easily 48. 5 year average 39.8mpg, 50 mile commute and driving with gusto!
If you're trying launch control etc and heavy on the Accelerator which I was at first you'll be in the 20s mpg but driving normally I find I'm around 32-33 mpg.. I've never been in the 40s mpg however I don't do many long drives on motorways. Love the car in general though it's a rapid and comfortable car. 👍

What brembo bake disc did you fit, do you know the part number? Cheers
Good luck
@@thatcarnutsguy I'll take a look cheers mate
I really want a 335 D and I keep tormenting myself by watching videos like this, i though another several month/Year of saving and ill get one...... until I seen the insurance for a year. £2800..... 5years no claims 22 yrs old. where tf do they get the prices from
Ah yes I remember those days, in fairness I’ve got nearly twenty years on you but insurance has bottomed out around £5-600/yr irrespective of car value, and that’s with 10 years no claims. I do remember a lot of cars went from uninsurable to acceptable around 24 years old, my first performance car was a focus ST which just all of a sudden became doable at 24 and I jumped at it! It’ll come, and it’ll be awesome!
@@thatcarnutsguy i can get an S3 for £1500 ish. I feel i have more of an attraction to the 335Ds especially the tourings, space if needed, practical and powerful. Just a question if im willing to pay a stupid amount insurance, i suppose the day will come but after driving a fiesta 1.2 for 5 years its about time for a change. I cant wait for that car Ive worked hard for comes around the corner n fills me with pleasure and excitement everytime i sit behind the wheel
@@thatcarnutsguy wherever they get the insurance figures from i have no clue, my mate had a M140I with a claim at 22 and he got his for 800….. seems abit stupid if you ask me. Anywhere you get recommend insurance policies?
No harmon kardon no heads up no heated seats no upgraded alloys whats the point then lad? Deadest spec out there
It was very carefully specced! Fair point on the Harmon kardon, that was a miss, as for the seat heat, that was pure belligerence as they should have been included and I don’t find them that useful in this country. I maintain the smaller wheel is the way to go in the UK.
Agreed bad spec. HK’s and heads up are a must on these and the plus pack for the brakes

This guy definitely keeps all his receipts in his wallet
Ah yeah, are you a receipts on a spike guy?
