Looking at buying one and only want one with heated seats 350 for them seems a no brainer tbh
A Volvo v60 review while driving a xc40.
It’s a shame the sound on this video is so bad
Good review although I'm not sure why you keep comparing it to a V60 as they are totally different types of car.
Great looking roads, nice drive
Good Video, Thanks! I just ordered mine, not sure why you say the V60 has same price, on web site the starting price for V60 is around 10K more than the XC40 so I would not suggest to compare like for like on the assumption they have the same cost; this is the smallest and cheapest one in Volvo I believe, and still a very good car. V60 is not a SUV either so the driving and seat are different on the 2 models. If you are tall I guess XC40 can be less comfortable, but for me there is plenty of room.
Thank you for making this video!
By far the best and most informative review of the E Class estate that I have seen. Been thinking of what to buy to get the kids to school and I think I have finally settled on one of these and your review probably tipped the scales. I hope you didnt ever get a Range Rover as I am sure you dodged a bullet by choosing a Mercedes. I have owned a couple and they are so luxurious and comfortable but when they go wrong the costs can be catastrophic. You were correct about not being able to get three child seats in the back.
I have a 2011 e350 CDI 4matic with now 256000km. I drove 90000km in 4 years. Just had to change the airmatic bags. But still strong
Just bought a 65 reg E220 estate with 100k miles. I'm not put off by the miles. Solid engine.
Ive owned 2 of these in past 6 years and these are the things id consider when buying this car Things that are a must in my opinion Heated seats Harmon kardon sound system Electric seats Electric mirrors Pro nav M sport+ braking system (the one that supports the 19 inch alloys) Adaptive suspension (rare but a must in my opinion) Get a 65 plate or higher as it comes with the newer led lights that look way better than the older in my opinion or newer Adaptive led lights are even better. If want vented and groved performance brake disks just know they have significantly more wind noise to them due to the holes in the discs compared to the standard disks without the holes but eventually you get used to it. Removing the dpf and egr is a must in this car doing that will give you so much more reliability in the long term however you need to go to a place that know what they are doing. You will also need to get it tuned after the removal. Costs around £350-£500 for removal and tune usually Id also consider when getting this car to get 4 brand new tyres all the same brand and and getting the tracking done by a specialist that does 4 wheel drive cars. Will help with mpg also the feel of the car and less wear on other car parts. Id reccomend a gearbox service on this car also if your milage is above 60k as it will make your gearchanges super smooth and it will eliminate the jerk you get in these cars when you come to a stop. Lastly id change the oil and oil filter along with the air filter every 5k instead of 10k might cost alittle more however its not too hard to do yourself if you have the time and space. My current 335d is on 160k milage and still going strong
Good read and info im picking up one next week f31 335d (65 plate) has all then options above. Only thing that needs done is all new matching tyres. I will get the fluids done all round for peace of mind.
@darrenviljoen2522 nice that sounds like a good spec. You will enjoy it. I also forgot to add I only use shell v power diesel and shell ultra helix engine oil as it just makes the car run smoother in my opinion
@@psing948 yeah i usually run premium fuels. S3 at the moment and dc5 luckily got momentum 2 minutes from my house.
@darrenviljoen2522 yeah man tesco moment for petrol and shell v power for diesel all the way 👌
Depending on your needs, I would also like to add active cruise control to the list, if you have to daily drive the car through heavy traffic, it makes it a breeze and changes your life, but it is a rare option from what I have seen. I personally have a 430d and been lucky to have everything mentioned except adaptive suspension, but has a sunroof which was another one of the things I was looking for. For me, its the perfect mix of a comfortable car and fun car that is able to kick its rear out if wanted to.
Mate i was planning to buy one of these next week but the mild hybrid thing just made me question my decision. Does the mild hybrid still engage in the sport mode??
I read somewhere that you can configure Comfort Mode with the sport mode settings to get around that start/stop nonsense 👍
Im planning to get a 335d (maybe 435d). What are some common faults and major faults i should be aware of? And what to check/look out for. Also looks like im probably going to be able to afford a 60k-70k mileage 335d...if lucky..maybe 55k. Is that too high and risky? Also heard some people mention an EGR recall. And another recall. How do we verify if the previous owner undertook the recall?
A bit late but in terms of doing 27 miles each way to work everyday what would it be like on fuel economy? People have said they’re pretty nice in fuel for a pretty fast car but just curious
Never too late. When I did that type of commute I easily got 40mpg driving however I wanted, if I was very careful then 45mpg, on long trips 48-50mpg easily achievable. Incredible given the performance on offer.
@@thatcarnutsguy ah that’s pretty good then thank you for that info, a lot of people said they get around 40-55 obvs the higher end performance would be including a slight tune to improve the economy. But in terms of practicality it just seems a nice well round car and with your video and others it just proves that :) so thank you
Its all about 4 wheel drive, whether that be xdrive/quattro etc, they give you so much confidence when driving in bad conditions, it's great! Truly the best cars to drive when wanting performance and good handling and grip in the wet.
Love your videos pal, your explenations are top tier, only gripe would be on POV drives the cam is pointing too high up? Tedward has a video on POV drive cameras where he suggests that, as a general guideline, the bottom of the frame should be positioned below the airbag.
Thanks for the feedback, it’s really great to hear. I totally agree on the camera angle for this one, was rushing, I nearly didn’t upload this one because of that. I think I’ve sorted it now, have an S90 vid in the can which was also a bit of a rushed one so we’ll see how that looks once I start to edit. More videos soon I hope.
@@thatcarnutsguy good to hear! Looking good, fan of Volvos myself, havent seen many Polestar ones, would be sick If you ever get a grab of one 🫶
As luck would have it I’ve requested a polestar 2 for a couple of weeks time. Might end up with something “similar” but will definitely try to film it.
I’m looking at this car review for the exact reason you brought this car, had a 3 year old and have now had twin girls! 😂
Good luck soldier 🫡
Looking to swap my Cupra 4drive petrol estate (300bhp), I test drove an F30 335d XDrive (310bhp) which, on paper, was just as fast but more economical. However, in reality I was underwhelmed by it's performance. Standalone it was a cracking car, but regardless of the quoted figures, it didn't feel as fast off the line, so I didn't make the move. Later, I looked at a Volvo V60 D6 AWD Plug-In Hybrid (285bhp) which was supposedly only 1 second slower to 60 with a ridiculous claimed 150mpg, but again I was unbelievably disappointed - it felt like an 8 second car, not a 5.8 second car, and real world mpg is reportedly 50-70mpg if driven extra carefully, barely better than the BMW. I sold the Cupra in the end while the market was still high, and moved away from a performance car, but now the itch has returned and I'm again looking at an F31 335d XDrive estate with a view of mapping it to 400bhp. I briefly considered a Jaguar iPace, but given the stories about fires and stuck throttles, you won't ever see me in a fully electric car, so the BMW appears to be the best option all round for decent enough economy, and power to overtake when you need it.
I watched this video for the first time a few months ago when I was looking for a S212 and your honest appraisal of the car went a long way to confirming my decision to buy one. A couple of weeks ago I took delivery of an early 2016 E220 Bluetec estate and love it to death. Although I don't have the child seat issue that you've got (my kids all have kids of their own) I needed an estate so that I could fit my wife's mobility scooter in the boot and the cavern that is the load space in the estate is ideal. I'm nearly 70 so this will probably be my last car as I plan to keep it for as long as I can continue to drive. Like you my previous car was a C-Class, which had over 280,000 miles on the clock when I traded it for the E-Class, and the difference is very notable. Thanks for your time and effort in making this video.
Thanks for taking the time to write such a nice comment, I’m glad the video was helpful and that you like your new car!
Are you sure the adaptive cruise can’t be turned into an ordinary cruise control? In my mini F56 you do that by just keeping one of the cruise control buttons pressed.
You’re right, someone pointed that out to me, if only I’d done a video 7 years ago when it was new 😂. Anyway to be honest I haven’t used the cruise in ages, I’ve preferred the speed limiter when I’ve been on longer trips. Actually not sure I’d get adaptive again. I’ve used Volvos pilot system in a couple of cars recently and it’s ok but I find myself zoning out, a couple of videos are coming for those cars!
Got one of these on a 67 reg, now on a private plate. In Mineral Grey colour. Quite a basic spec but I plan to add things to it. I've already upgraded the business nav non-touch 6.5 inch screen to 8.8 inch touch screen (OEM part from BMW not an android screen) and added fullscreen CarPlay. Mine only has the manual seats, no reverse camera, no adaptive cruise control, no heated steering wheel or heated seats but I plan to retrofit heated seats once I've sorted other things out. It does have standard cruise control and parking sensors of course. I have absolute babied the car since I got it and it's had a full service, major service and 3 oil changes in the 30,000 miles or 15 months I've owned it. In the next week it's going for another oil service and the following week a walnut blast, replacement glow plugs are on order as the previous owner was a right cheapskate and hardly maintained it at all (they had fitted tyres without TPMS sensors on runflat tyres - which is actually a legal requirement. I had these sensors bought and added at my cost, they hadn't bothered to take it for it's EGR outstanding recall either).
Sounds like a great project car! I have taken my 65 reg 335d F31 from the UK to Germany and I will now upgrade it a bit - e.g. radar cruise control. Will be lots of fun - won‘t sell this one. New BMWs just aren‘t the same - the F31 is one of the last true classic BMWs in my view, and the 335d is a great package.
I love mine just a shame it's costing me a fortune to run it... I've spent in excess of £500 in diesel in the last 3 weeks! That said I do usually cover 1800 - 2000 miles per month.... it's a thirsty beast. Need to get mine de-coked with a walnut blast as it's now covered 92,200 miles and to my knowledge it's never had one. (I've had it for 16 months and since the 59,000 mile mark). I keep toying with the idea of replacing it with an electric car, something like a Polestar 2 or a Tesla, the lease would only cost perhaps £100-£200 more than the monthly car payment anyway but I'd save hundreds each month on fuel.... but I full well know if I replaced it with an electric car I'd regret it. @@thereallotharmatthae
ive got a 330d remapped stage 1, 310hp - love it !
I'm deciding between 435d or 430d but would like the rear wheel drive on the 430d what 0to 60 does your 330d stage 1 get? Thanks.
@@IDRIS-wl3qy 4.8 if good traction, rapid pal
@shane_and_sue yeah mate, that's plenty the 335d has xdrive and also a extra turbo so more to go wrong... 330d seems to be the perfect 1 especially in England with all the speed limits
@@IDRIS-wl3qythe 330D will also give you 5mpg more. But in English weather it can be difficult to put the power down due to how much it rains.
@ronniep9272 true not second hand the prices are so similar between 30d and 35d
The F3x ages really well. Sweet car!
Single turbo on this one, twin scroll though
No, biturbo on the 335d. Greetings from a 335d owner. :-)
Yes and I did know that, what did I say? If I said twin turbo that was a brain fart, it’s harder than it looks when the camera is turned on 😬
@@thatcarnutsguyit’s a twin turbo in the 335d
Are the 7 seats actually useful?
Ours isn’t a 7 seater so not sure but the ones that are, and they are super rare, have two rear facing seats like an old school American station wagon, so I guess they’re good enough for occasional use.
Exactly
Great video, thanks. Actually thinking of getting the 2013-2016 212 Wagon, too. I definitely want a 4Matic. Any idea how reliable/expensive to maintain are the 6 cylinder engines? I'm primarily looking at the 350 Bluetec, but I would also consider the petrol (E300, E350 or E400) versions if they were more reliable. Any insights appreciated.
Sorry I haven’t got any experience of the 6 cylinders, but I would bet that economy is actually similar to our 220d, from a servicing perspective they will take a bit more oil but labour and other parts should be similar so probably not much more (the fuel filters are almost £100 on ours as it’s a merc part, can’t imagine it’s different on the 350). If I could have found one at the right money I’d have probably gone for one myself.
@@thatcarnutsguy Thank you!
We got a well optioned S213 E220d 2018 and its very good, its absolutely beautiful and the mileage eco is amazing.
They’re nice aren’t they, I can see us changing for one eventually
Thanks for the video, on avg what mpg are you getting?
It’s not great in my opinion, average around 33-35 but lots of short journeys in that. On a long run it seems to struggle to beat 45mpg, it’s a fairly heavy big lump but for the power output it should do a bit better.
Mixed driving ours gets 43.5 average. If careful can get over 50.
I’ve just bought an M340d and is sensational performance and economy wise. On UK roads it’s so easy to achieve 50+mpg with a 0-60 in 4.5secs of better.
Yes I do feel like if I went to an M340i I’d miss the grunt and economy of the diesel. Maybe the M340d is the answer. How do you find the brakes, not the BMWs strong suit generally?
As a daily driver, you absolutely cannot beat these cars! I recently let go of my 2015 E220 CDi Night Edition (W212), had it 3 years and covered 40k miles - apart from the similar hiccup of the dreaded nox sensor it was a beautiful drive. Comfortable, efficient and I believe the best looking E Class they made! I've since upgraded to a 2018 S213 E220d (a must due to work and the age of the 212 creeping up), I started off being extremely stubborn. It was too much technology for me and I just wanted my W212 back haha. I've covered around 13k miles in her now and I must say I love it. Being an SE model, I expected the comfort to be better (it definitely was). But, what I didn't expect was the sheer improvement in economy. I return around 800 miles... to ONE tank, absolutely insane and trumps the 212 at 550 (max).
I’ve been slightly disappointed with the economy of ours but it’s not really an issue for the miles it does, just thought it would be better. I do like the newer model in some ways, I’m just thinking the 212 era might have been a peak on quality for Mercedes before they had to put the money into tech. Would quite like a well optioned 213 se or even the all terrain, but there’s now a significant premium on what we paid, the 212 was a bargain!
wonder how this compares to the diesel S5 in terms of performance and handling and more importantly mpg
btw not really had a fast fast car before my audi a3 has its moments but 0-50 it's pales in comparison . only thing is I have access to a fair priced Audi mechanic - so this is why I should maybe avoid BMW
Not sure but I’d like to find out. Real world there’s probably little between but I bet the Audi is less rear biased when pushing on. Very nearly changed into an S4 but wanted a petrol and they ditched it just as I was looking.
Nice little video that, covered pretty much everything I was wondering about, thanks
Glad it was helpful!

Yes I am, should probably do an update video soon
Thanks for the review mate !
No problem 👍
Had my 2013 e class 220 estate for over 2 years now. What a great car, covered about 20k in it. A lot of that towing our caravan. Its been all around the country and never missed a beat. had a few minor issues with it, nothing serious. Apart from that mainly servicing and wear and tear items. Find a good specialist and they cost no more to run than any other car. I do consider changing it, but might just keep this till it eventually dies lol. Next journey is a 3 week tour of Ireland at the end of July. Touch wood there are no issues. :) Also, keep an eye on your rear subframe. Mine needed a new one 2 months ago, it was replaced by Mercedes under an extended warranty as its a common issue across the range, especially cars between 2010 to 2016.
Thanks. Have recently had the rear suspension looked at under warranty but no sign of subframe issues, that’s an unexpected issue given how generally well protected mercs of this era seem to be from what I’ve seen so far. Will keep an eye on that and will probably extend the warranty again next year. Also can’t find anything to justify changing it for, I think this was a pretty good vintage for merc.
I really want a 335 D and I keep tormenting myself by watching videos like this, i though another several month/Year of saving and ill get one...... until I seen the insurance for a year. £2800..... 5years no claims 22 yrs old. where tf do they get the prices from
Ah yes I remember those days, in fairness I’ve got nearly twenty years on you but insurance has bottomed out around £5-600/yr irrespective of car value, and that’s with 10 years no claims. I do remember a lot of cars went from uninsurable to acceptable around 24 years old, my first performance car was a focus ST which just all of a sudden became doable at 24 and I jumped at it! It’ll come, and it’ll be awesome!
@@thatcarnutsguy i can get an S3 for £1500 ish. I feel i have more of an attraction to the 335Ds especially the tourings, space if needed, practical and powerful. @@timbob1145 it’s a great car! Very happy with it. Comfortable, great cruiser and straight line performance when you want it and easy to drive. Doesn’t fair too badly on economy either. Steering feel isn’t very sharp, which was a common thing from many reviews I’ve watched, but it’s not an outright sports car anyway. Enjoy your collection and first drive, hope you also enjoy it 👍🏻

Are you using runflats? You seem to have a lot of road noise so couldn't hear the music properly. You could have tried the music when parked up
No ditched the RF for standard star marked pilot sport 4. It’s not the quietest car in it’s class to be fair. Good point about parking up for a sound test.
My golf mk7 has adaptive cruise control I love it
Pretty much perfect all rounder
This guy definitely keeps all his receipts in his wallet
Ah yeah, are you a receipts on a spike guy?
what a great review, very informative, i`ve heard those 2.1 diesel`s are very noisy, is it audible on tick over, i want a big practical estate, but refinement is VERY important to me. thanks.
They are a bit noisy from outside but unlike my previous c class with the same engine, the E class does an excellent job of stoping any sound and vibration coming into the cabin at idle. On the move it’s fine too although not exactly an entertaining tone. I find it extremely relaxing and refined to spend time in. They have really spent money on sound deadening and engine mounts, which I believe might be some kind of either active or hydraulic type. There must be something clever going on because even when the c class was box fresh you felt the vibration in the seat and it was much noisier. The E class is totally different.
@@thatcarnutsguy thanks for that, like your video`s, very informative and helpful 😀😀
£48k new, now dropping under £35k used already. Best colour BMW has had in years though, wish they offered it on the 3 series.
The price of everything has gone silly, looks like it may be softening slightly, but I still can’t get my head round these being basically £20k more than I paid for my 335d 6 years ago, that’s almost double. Ok it’s comparing a discounted price to a RRP but the discounts were there!
I’ve had a few of the 335d’s in the E and F series, I eventually settled with a 2016 F31. I had mine Hartge tuned by Birds BMW to 374bhp (at the wheel) when it was 9 months old and it’s never missed a beat, I also put £2.5k down on Bilstein suspension to lower it as the X Drives sit hideously high on standard suspension and the ride is too floaty to hammer properly, rarely have I ever been beaten by anything. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. My advice to anyone in the second hand market look for an F series 335d - don’t even look at one that doesn’t have a full BMW service history, the service intervals are too long as standard and if the maintenance isn’t 100% on point it will get expensive real quick. My second tip would be about spec, because the base price was so high many are under spec’d, the base models look pants and don’t feel particularly refined. Also consider the both diff’s want servicing at 50k, the transfer box and the gearbox wants doing 60-70k and the cam chain needs doing at 100k which is about £2k as the chain is at the back of the engine near the bulkhead and the gearbox has to come off again and be serviced.
Sounds like good advice. I’ve been considering a suspension change as it has got worse with age I think, it never was great. I know birds have now developed their own suspension set up which sounds well rated. There are various cheaper options such as a spring change which doesn’t seem like it would fix the issue but apparently stock shocks are ok, with the age of mine it makes more sense to change both. It bothers me that bmw service schedules don’t touch the gearbox but will shortly get mine done elsewhere as the main dealer won’t do it. Didn’t think about diffs but makes sense if they are serviceable, I think they’ve got a bit noisier over time. I’ve always reached the service mileage in under a year and felt that was ok based on motorway miles but the last one was getting over a year due to lack of use and it felt wrong to me, just didn’t seem as smooth, maybe it was all in my head but mechanical sympathy dictated that I got it done early.
What about turbo failure? Common?
Great car, but for me a RWD only model with lowered M sport suspension would have been perfect. I know traction from the line wouldn't be as good, but it would have been lighter, more fun to drive, looked better and been more economical. I guess a 330d with a remap would be a good alternative.
I’ve often thought that about a RWD 330d. Most of the time it’d have enough traction anyway and it would be a more honest drivetrain and steering set up in the spec you suggest. All wheels driven does give a zero thinking effort ability to drive round anyone on a wet day which is handy on the misery of a wet commute, but yeah I think there’s a lot that would be more satisfying without that complexity and some of its compromises!
Good video. Helpful practical advice. Car looks great by the way.
Thanks for the feedback!
