Review: 2020 BMW M340i xDrive - Worth the Hype?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июн 2024
- I review the 2020 BMW M340i xDrive to see if it's as good as everyone suggests and how it compares to the other luxury sport sedans. There's a lot to like about the M340i but it's not perfect either, and does command a price premium as well. What do you think about the M340i? Big thanks to Harrison Auto Sales for providing this vehicle to review!

Harrison AS coming in clutch with the M340i featuring the glorious B58 motor 😤🦍
I had a 2020 M340i with the adaptive suspension and it makes a HUGE difference in ride quality. Also had a 2020 S4 and S5 and the M340i was just as comfortable. Then I went to a 2022 RS5 and now 2024 M3 Competition xDrive (both of these are surprisingly comfortable in their comfort modes as well). Great review Matt!
Thanks for sharing your ownership experiences!
@@MattMaranMotoring thanks Matt! I've been following since you got your BRZ (I bought one as well at the same time!). Miss that little car!
Do you just lease the cars? Getting them so often
@@colelucas5936 nope I own all my cars. I just make good decisions so I don't lose a sh!t ton of money.
I have a s5 sportback I prob put it on comfort 2 times in total 😂
Awesome)I'm glad you finally had a chance to drive this)))
I've been waiting for this forever finally
I have one that I will be selling next month for $40K. I have upgraded M performance brakes, ceramic coating, new tires, carbahn tune. Mint condition.
35 ill buy right now
What's the mileage on your m340i?
I’ve been used car shopping the 340i this past week. Drove 2 2022 models on Friday. In my area, a lot of the listings I’ve sifted through have an accident on their vehicle history report. Funny that now you post this! Maybe it’s a sign haha!
I'm glad you finally had a chance to drive this!
X3 m40i owner here. Such a nice daily if you want a comfy, quick, good looking suv that’s not too big
good looking SUV = oxymoron
Yes, finally some exhaust revs 🔥
These things have so much potential outside of a burble tune. Glad you got to finally check one out on the channel!
I own a G80 M3 and stock I think I prefer the M340i exhaust sound. I put a AA midpipe which really woke up my M3 as far as sound but the M340i really sounds great for 380ish HP. M340i is the best overall car BMW makes, amazing value for the $$. BMW has really pulled away from Audi and Merc over the last 4 years or so. M Power!
Last summer I bought a 2022 330i xdrive with the M Sport package and 19” wheels. I never test drove the 340, but the 330 is quick enough for me and I could get quite a bit more for my money. I will say the ride is pretty firm, I would much prefer the 18” to soften it up a hair. I think this is one of the last “old school” ish BMWs in this modern age, which is partially what drew me to it. While I’d love to have the performance of the 340, I’m really happy with my purchase.
Same here. My 2020 330i base model rocks.
Well shot & done video, I enjoyed
Great review Matt! Let’s get you to 500k subscribers !!!
Thanks! Hopefully it gets there someday!
Excellent video Matt.
Thanks!
I have that identical car. Same year, same color, same xdrive, same wheels. I've done cat delete, bm3 tune, and dinan carbon cold air. I run it on stock map 95% of the time.
How come that you drive it on the stock map? You don’t Like the additional power?
I also have the same spec, blue on these wheels but the Individual white interior, so far I am liking it but I am reluctant on giving a shot on the BM3 tune.
these will go down as the last great bmw. beautiful NORMAL exterior design that's not polarizing or weird, just a handsome looking car. beautiful interior with a nice gauge cluster and nav screen with hvac controls and not a cheap looking tablet across the whole dash. cherish these people, you will never see a bmw like this again. only downhill from here
Great review Matt! I picked up a new M340i XDrive (with the new BMW interior) last year and I've been loving it! You pretty much nailed the review IMO, the ride is a bit stiff but for me, the engine/transmission more than make up for it.
Congrats on getting yours, glad you’re liking it!
Perfect timing I am about to eat lunch 🤝
I miss my 2018 340i, was by far the best car ive ever owned
mustve been your only car
@V8Brah nah I've had some fun cars. A 17 elantra sport, 16 challenger rt, the 340i. Had some other cars like a salvage 325ci that I rebuilt. A gti, and a Evo 9. Will be looking into getting a brz or 86 next but that's years down the line
@dillonhughes1417 Look at that dudes handle, and that explains why he trolled you lol
@@speeddemon311 fair enough he got me, although I'm always happy to reminiscence about the cars
Good luck finding another one. By now, they're all on their 4th owner and have tunes and other "tasteful mods," along with 2-3 minor accidents. It's unfortunate that so many losers own these cars now because they're great and I'd love to have one.
2024 M340i owner here, definitely love my car, highly recommend for someone looking for a good balance of daily/spirited driving. Certainly recommend the M-performance suspension (active dampers), many car reviewers say it's night/day having it on the car and I agree. My car has the "track package" that forces me to get 19" wheels with the giant brake setup and the ride is comfortable. Fuel economy, I've gotten 22-25 city on eco pro and as good as 37 hwy on eco pro/comfort mode.
Only gripe I really have about the car is not having ventilated seats.
That car sounds awesome!
Portimao blue metallic…with the oyster leather is the best combo.
Great car‼️ M240/340/440 w/ the B58 is fantastic & reliable vehicle(s). M340 > G70 > Q50 > S4 IMO
Great review Matt, tempting upgrade from my Stinger gt.
I traded mt 2021 GT1 for a 2021 M340i x-drive and I'm still happy with the choice. Nothing wrong with the Stinger, but I overpaid at the time and had a chance to switch over, while the price was still high. I did enjoy the Stinger while I had it.
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!
@Matt I dunno if you’ve heard this but as far as I know, the great crackles pops and burbles were largely tuned out from 2021 model year forward. I’m sure for whatever regulation reason, but the aftermarket likely has a solution.
That makes 2020 M340 the only model year with these sounds out the box
Good to know, thanks!
Fun review Matt , I’ve always liked this model and wanted it badly but the price and cost of ownership
Gorgeous sedan. With amazing interior. Best in class forsure. Gives u the whole package. Performance, looks, and luxury
Good review bro
Thanks!
Stay on this path Matt- this is your niche. Views will increase exponentially. Long time fan from Jamaica here- my first vid from you is the E46 330CI and rooting for you boss.
Thank you for your years of support, I appreciate it! I’ll keep working in more of these reviews when I get the right opportunities!
Im glad to finally see you get to review a BMW Matt, awesome review!
Thanks!
Wow, This is my only used BMW sedan to buy.
It is one of the greatest sports sedans in history
Nice review. It probably is the overall top pick; I feel a stinger with a little more space and the hatch is an interesting compare as well.
I was just thinking about the stinger too. I think they would be a great choice for someone also looking at an M340i
I absolutely adoooorrre This BMW! ❤
U can’t judge the 0-60 without experiences the launch control. Just let it build to about 10psi and you get a ridiculous launch with perfect traction nothing like what it feels like just flooring it at low speeds.
These seem so good at the price point, I don't see why I would bother going up to an M3. I don't need north of 400hp on the street. I don't need a dual-clutch transmission. 380-400whp from a great engine with a great ZF8 trans is totally enough for big smiles and more reasonable ownership costs.
And to add to that, if you do end up wanting more power (500-850whp) the B58 is basically just as reliable as the S58 at those power levels. Unless you have extra money burning a hole in your pocket the M340i is the way to go
Matt, I would LOVE you doing a G80 M3 base review
Nice review sir
Always wonder how cars like this compare to the Bullitt you had
They deliver fun in very different ways, so a comparison would be a lengthy response haha but the Mustang is more engaging but also a little less dynamic.
@@MattMaranMotoring Understood. Keep up the great work. Best of luck
@@KrnrKrvrwhat answer did you even expect, what a stupid question
Had an M440i. It was pretty fun
Was? What happened to it?
Could be your next car!
Classy ride
M340I all day!!!
This is one of my favorite color and rim combinations for these - blue metallic with standard rims. I get so tired of seeing white, black and grey sport sedans with large rims and almost no tire sidewall.
It's the ZTK (cooling & high performance tire and wheel package) that gets you staggered tires, RWD or AWD.
I would also say in my experience from having no adaptive to adaptive, it is transformative in every day comfort. The standard suspension is just way too busy.
Wow Matt love this review I would personally justify the ride quality for that acceleration but I’m also an enthusiast
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
The goldilocks do everything car.
Too bad they sound absolutely awful 😂
@@drunkpolack7612 that's m3, B58 sounds great
@thewolf61691 That dude probably hates on anything that's not V8! Those are the typical haters of what is a great sounding engine even without an exhaust modification!!
@@speeddemon311 agreed, I own a V8 m850i and hellcat redeye... Still, the B58 sounds good
from a design standpoint, the new BMW M135 (and the X1 M35i) come with quad-exhaust tips, just like a true M-car. You'd think the M340i would be worthy of the quad-exhaust as well.
When did they stop offering the manual on this? 2017?
Did you enjoy the 340i or the is500 more? I love both but it's difficult for me to pick one
The 340i is the better performance car but the IS 500 is more comfortable and with the V8 sound, it’s the one I’d want.
The suspension is too firm. Even in comfort mode. I test drove one and the roads around here aren't nice but driving this car made me nauseous.
I’m really considering this, but I don’t know how much a stiff ride would bother me on a daily basis.
I just wish it was available in a manual.
How is the handling of the M340 compared to the old 340i or even M240i F series?
Haven’t driven an M240i but it’s way better than the old 340i to me.
The stock 225 tires on my M340i xdrive were the weak link, I upgraded to continental 255s and made my alignment a little sportier and it takes corners so much better now. AWD powerslides are unmatched
Looks great considrering what bmw's usually look like lol
What are your thoughts when comparing the m340i to the TLX type s? I know you have some good seat time in the acura but I didnt hear you mention the tlx in the review.
I like the steering better in the Acura, and the maintenance/reliability long-term (from an electronics standpoint), but the BMW is probably the more athletic car otherwise. The transmission and throttle response weren’t the best in the pre-2024 Type S, but if we’re talking 2024s, I’d rather have the Acura.
Just did an oil change today on my f30 340i @97k miles; Zero oil consumption… *zero.* It’s been at 500 wheel for 50k or so. Motul 8100 g2 5w40 since 30k. Burble off since then, too. First owner was a lease. Lesson: Use that good good and don’t burblebrapopopfart your town up - it washes your cylinder walls and I’ll die on this hill. Source: teknishn... and my car doesn’t consume oil...
Thank you for sharing your experience!

@@MattMaranMotoring how do you think the reliability is? I like this and the lexus LS500
Does it come in 6MT?
Unfortunately not.
Downpipe and tune
Dp and E30 tune around 5xxwhp?
Any car can have that
@lifesAtrip513 Very few turbo cars respond so well with basic mods, and many become even more unreliable like an STI for example lol
@@lifesAtrip513not true
Next to the river
fawk yeah. first.
would only buy a CPO. from a BMW dealer not from a Harry"s Auto outfit
🙂👍
Hey, I have a 21 model year of this car, and I also have a 24 RS3 . Honestly, the Audi is a lot more fun to drive and sounds a lot better as well!!
I should hope the "RS" model is more fun than an "M lite" car.
@chrisburry8147 Suspension and overall ride quality is much better with 19 inch super low profile tires on the RS3! Did I mention the car is very fast...! I'm just trying to be helpful to people who are considering buying either of these cars!!
@@speeddemon311 I wasn't talking smack about your car lol. I have an M3 and had 2 RS cars previous to this as well as an M340i.
What was the msrp comparison of the m340i spec vs rs3 ?
@@aceofspades6667 About 60k as built for M340, and about 65k for the RS3 as configured! Almost seemed like a bit of a bargain considering how much more I prefer the RS3 in every way!
hell yea first
but also awesome review as always Matt!
Not the most luxurious, but one of the best do it all dailys for enthusiasts. Ton of mod potential with the b58 over the competition as well.
Performance Bimmers generally ride pretty harsh
The BMW m3 and m4 ride terribly harsh and unforgiving on imperfect road surfaces, ruins the experience imo.
Have you ever driven the newest gen M3/4?? It's just as soft in Comfort as the M340i with adaptive suspension. It gets more stiff in Sport and Sport+ but never crashy.
This guy is a tesla fan boy he's never been in a new g8x m3 or m4. Theirs 3 different damping mods and comfort is just as good as my old 5 series.
@@G82Watts agreed. I have a 2024 M3 Competition xDrive and it's very comfortable in Regular/Comfort mode (just as comfortable as my old 2020 M340i with adaptive suspension).
Completely agree, and I have had two M performance cars with the adaptive suspension!!
Thought this is an old video
These used prices are a joke, here in europe u pay minimum double the price...
4 years old, out of warranty, $40k. Yeah I don't think so. In 4 years it should be about a 38% to 40% depreciation. Putting a real-world value of this vehicle around $32k per the national institute for insurance.
You can buy them for around 32k with about 25k miles more than this one. Since you’re following the value statistics provided by national institute for insurance, it should also be mentioned that in terms of mileage the car should be at around 60k miles. Also your statistics doesn’t account for demand, in certain areas cars with the b58 are in much higher demand. So a valuation of 40k doesn’t seem absurd depending on where he is. Even in a low demand area, if this car is actually cleaned up for sale I’d imagine it should still be able to fetch mid to high 30s for having only 43k miles.
Looks like someone used a dirty rag to clean the display.
Engine still sounds bad and the fake exhaust tips are still fake. It’s just not enough sport
See how shiny that steering wheel is? That’s just plain crap. Clean that damn thing that’s all hand oil and dirt crap. Disgusting.
This!! Please clean that steering wheel properly and the screen also. Someone just took a Clorox wipe to it
