It would be great to get advise for Masters athletes. For example with patella pain, how to train for speed and power when knees may hurt etc.

Thanks for the comment. This is something that I have been asked about. I may make a video or produce an article (see pubsecure.lucidpress.com/THE_JUMPER/
      For jumps/sprints content).
The issue would be not being topical enough for the typical channel viewer - but this does not mean that I won’t do it). Thanks for the comment

Isometric, Patrick squats, more knee tune ups

Get "knees over toes" flexibility with body weight squats and various yoga and mobility movement. This will remove most of the irritation around the knee joint during athletic training.

Tips for an athlete who has a fast acceleration but then seems to get stuck and never ‘open up’ during top speed? If the intensity, or rather the effort level, is brought down they can then however really find their rhythm & start to move.

I would advice to work on hip flexion, both in term of range and strength. I would allow to have a quicker recovery with a higher knee to help strike the ground in the proper position

That person needs to work on upright running mechanics, it's that simple. Right now their confidence is in their acceleration.

My son is 13yrs old and he runs 100m in 12.94 secs. However, when he lands his front foot comes pretty decent under his body but his knees are too soft( it's not straight enough). I have been doing some 1 and 2 legged depth jump with him as well as box jump which he does very well and can jump 36 " in height with both legs. His hips are high and his leg lift is good.
How can I get him to land better with his front foot at high velocity?

At 13 his physical qualities will take time to develop. I’ve seen various strength capabilities on similar age athletes - some can absorb force better than others, some are more reactive and some may have for example, superior leg speed. I’d keep on with straight leg hops and also low drop jumps too (as you are). With sprint drills and regular but sensible training accumulation the stiffness should develop over time. One further suggestion perhaps do wicket runs (low hurdles) and get him to sprint through 10-12. If they are slightly below his normal stride length then he’ll have to get his feet down more quickly and this should result in a stiffer contact. Hope this helps and all the best.

How has it gone since the 2 years? Coach gave the advise. There is also his 48 minute presentation on proper upright sprinting mechanics which gives the drills to make it right.

Athletes r born with speed to run 10src hundreds not all of them, yes u train yo become more efficient and to maintain it longer over a period of time, but nature is the key

    • @Johnshepherdtrackcoach

That's correct, although the optimum training will produce optimum results and can make anyone faster (some will of course be faster due to their genetics as you note). Thanks for the comment
