One of the main reasons is that the academy doesn't want the stunt people to die trying to pull something impressive in order to win in a category like that.

Aren’t they doing the stunts anyways tho? Like they’re risking their lives rn without an award so idk if adding an Oscar for it would make it THAT much more risky but point taken

And people still are gonna do the stunts nonetheless, it’s not about what stunts they will perform, but how many stunt people are apart of the academy and they need more to make up their own branch.

@@ilikepasta578 The "riskier stunts" argument is such bullshit. How does that argument differ from how actors starve or stuff themselves (or fuel their day with drugs) for roles, even with nutritionists monitoring them?
By comparison, stunt people stay healthy and agile much more of the time, yet they’re the ones with death wishes that the industry must discourage?? If anything, a major stunt injury or death would do more to kill the film's chances at a theoretical Best Stunt Coordination nom than help its chances.

I think it's obvious who should get the award, the stunt coordinator/supervisor. Similar to Visual Effects, Production Design, Costumes, etc., there are hundreds of people creating the actual visual effects, sets, costumes, but it is the lead(s) of those departments (the ones that have the final say and comms with the director) that get the awards. Stunt performers unfortunately will still get shafted, but that is no different from what happens now with many of the other tech categories that have teams behind them.

    • @werideatdusk

@werideatdusk but again, that doesn't make sense considering how some of the other tech categories are handled. No one is screaming over the hundreds of visual effects artists that don't get the Oscar when their movie wins the visual effects award.

As with all the other below-the-line Oscars categories, a theoretical Best Stunt Coordination category would honor the department head(s)-the stunt coordinator, not individual stunt performers (or the ensemble). Moreover, if there’s enough fight choreography and/or dance choreography-say, no less than 5% of the runtime for each-then include the ones in charge of those as well.

I'd say smooth out the name to "Stunts and Choreography" only because choreography in film (not just dance, just any organized physical performance that's not really a stunt) would be worth putting on the same level (like RRR or Black Swan's elaborate dance sequences)

The craziest thing about a Best Stunts and Choreography award is that there have been several years where there would've been intense races. Obviously John Wick 4 v. Mission Impossible this year would've been a big fight, but 2010 would've seen Black Swan v. Inception as a match-up between the elaborately executed dance sequences of the former and the mindbending fights of the latter. Hell, even Ben-Hur could've picked up one more Oscar had the award existed back in 1959.

@@Wired4Life2 Well that's sort of what I meant, nominate the stunt director and the stunt performers. I didn't mean nominating specific stunts. That way the people planning the stunts get credit along with those that actually put their life on the line to make it happen. Maybe best stunt director and best stunt ensemble? I should have been more clear in what I was trying to say.

    • @Wired4Life2
      @Wired4Life2 2 месяца назад

@@slimeylimey89 The stunt ensemble? The principal cast is bound to counter that, not to mention the executive producers, assistant directors, electricity team, grip team, carpenters, painters, set dressers, propmakers, tailors, fabric cutters, dyers, individual makeup artists, prosthetics artists, hairstylists, assistant editors and data wranglers, individual VFX artists and animators, sound team, and score conductor (if not the composer) and individual musicians.
This is why the only people who should receive the ordinary media, below-the-line craft awards should be the craft department heads.
Most of the roles I've mentioned are unionized gig workers. They're hired to simply do what they're told and have little input in their respective craft designs. If anything, that's what ordinary media, below-the-line craft awards honor-the design.

I'd rather adding categories where ALL the movies would be eligible to compete. That's why categories like stunt and original songs feel like appeasing to a certain group of professionals. If some songs or some stunts are so amazing, then they should give out a special award at their discretion.

@@werideatdusk Now now, I've seen even modest indie features with a scene or two of simple running have a "stunt coordinator" credited. Contrast that with how not every film has a song directly composed for it.
We don't knock Best Costume Design for almost always recognizing period pieces or fantasy productions over works set in contemporary times-where, last I checked, characters still wear clothes designed and coordinated by a costume designer.
We don't knock Best Makeup & Hairstyling for overlooking the usual makeup applied to anyone performing in front of a camera with sufficient lighting.

I don't want them adding ANY new categories, at least not while they have network people trying to get categories pushed out of the telecast. The thing that makes the Oscar more prestigious than the Emmys and the Grammys is that they don't have a million categories trying to pander to every tiny role on the set to the point where they have to hand half of them out off the air.
