I used to think he was just a heartthrob, a pretty boy and then I saw the Nice Guys, Drive...the list goes on. His talent to truly embody the character he is playing is really good. He's become one of my favorite actors.
Yeah, that's the pipeline for many serious actors - first they're dismissed as heartthrobs because only women appreciate them, but once they are cast by Serious Directors (meaning ones sanctioned by there male audience), suddenly men "discover" them and they're now prestige. Here women were first adopters but we never get the credit, do we, men just assume those actors didn't exist until they noticed them

He’s good at being human - something I thing most actors miss. You can embody a roll to perfection, but if you leave being a person at the door, something is missing.
For whatever character he plays, he’s still just a person too, and it makes him someone to connect with.
I think it's mostly the fact that he's avoided superhero stuff like the plague. Also, he's never done a sequel. Very smart move imho. Sure he's probably had offers like crazy. Those roles are life changing checks but he's probably seen those contracts. ScarJo literally has been suing, and winning these big studios the last 3 years. I don't know the details of why or how much but it's doesn't sound like she had a blast being creatively imprisoned and had her personal life ripped apart from these 10 year franchise commitments, reshoots, etc.

Ryan Gosling in The Nice Guys & Crazy Stupid Love are two of the most hilarious performances i've ever seen and I'm always surprised people don't think of him of a comedic actor just because of the Notebook & Drive.

Gosling's definitely an actor and not a movie star. He creates many different characters (just compare 'Barbie' to 'Drive' to 'The Nice Guys' to 'Blade Runner' to 'The Place Beyond the Pines') and is not required to deliver on brand consistency as all movie stars must do in order to generate box office returns. He goes for awards (the big 4) over box office so is trying to compete with other actors rather than other movie stars. I think he would find it boring if he changed profession and had to deliver the same persona with each project for the sake of brand consistency in order to just be a studio cash cow. Those guys make a ton of money though but I'm glad that Gosling's aspirations were more artistic when he had to option to go purely commercial and become a movie star instead.

@@laurie3rdperson208 The big 5 would include the Emmys but as Gosling sticks to movies for the time being, the big 4 are the Oscars (2 nominations), the Golden Globes (1 win), the Césars and the BAFTAs (1 nomination). You will never see any movie stars competing at these awards but their films will make the highest gross at the box office, we're talking hundreds of millions for the studios. Conversely, as actors are required to create characters, their films tend to do very little at the box office but they are able to compete at the big 4 for recognition of the craft. Gosling is going up against the likes of Phoenix, Oldman, Viggo and Cillian for recognition of the craft rather than the likes of Dwayne, Gadot, Keanu and JLo who are measuring success by commercial performance (i.e. box office numbers) by delivering on brand consistency for the studios. They are movie stars and excellent at delivering on brand but Gosling is absolutely in the same profession as the previous 4 mentioned and his Oscar will come eventually, most likely from one of his collaborations with Chazelle who always gets the best out of him.

Actors with a dance background bring the ability to change their physicality by role, which is the missing piece when you don't quite buy into an actor who can't. He merges that with a Meryl Streep- like invisibility cloak and you get a velvet hammer of an actor.
that's a really interesting thing to consider. i wonder if dancing creates a change in psychology that allows that fluidity
@@rahulsup is more of having a really good grasp about their own body so they know how to convey things physically on a very subtle level. Delivery and facial expressions do the heavy lifting for a lot of actors, physicality is equally important.
He stole the show in The Big Short, and that's pretty damn impressive considering the list of actors in that film.
Him and Carrell were aces in that film! I usually think Carrell is trying too hard, but he was on point in TBS.
I forgot he was in the movie. I only remembered Bale and Pitt.
Love Gosling in that but maybe a slight edge goes to Bale.

They were both completely robbed. The NC-17 rating was pure bullshit, especially considering 50 shades came out the same year and was only an R. They both deserved nominations and Williams could have easily won.
That moment where she dances and he sings just encapsulated the entire movie in one moment of conflicting emotion.
Lars really is an incredible movie.

His masterful performance in Lars and the Real Girl showed the limitlessness of his range. Watching him, you feel so many emotions - heartbreak, elation, and the subtle twinges in-between. He is everything in that film, supported beautifully by the bleak weather and excellent supporting cast. This performance of Ryan’s and Timothy Hutton’s in Ordinary People are both at the top of my list of best performances in the history of cinema. 🎬
I love seeing people who were obviously born to do what they do and who have found their calling and embraced and nourished it and it paid off. Makes me happy. He truly is an outstanding artist with such impressive range.
yes!! he had an innate, natural ability. most actors struggle (in classes/with coaches) to get back to that inner child life, to imagine and inhabit characters as little kids do. he never lost it. i credit his mother for not interfering with that talent and letting it just bloom and grow. no strange "shakespeare" learned behaviors, no "method" techniques to mess him up and no outsiders trying to monetize him and capitalize on his talent. how wonderful to see a well adjusted, successful child actor grow up to become the best that they can be.

You perfectly captured his acting style. In many movies when the audience gets introduced to the characters, it feels like their life is just beginning as soon as the cameras started rolling. But films with Gosling as a character, the audience feels him as a real person and we just happened to catch a moment of his life. He has history, he has traumas, he has dealt with things, he is a complex person like all of us. It makes him relatable. Even in Barbie, playing a super goofy character that relies on being Barbie's side piece, there is extreme history and pent up emotions that makes the climax surprising yet expected and empathizing. I've been sleeping on him for years bc I thought he was just the rom-com guy, but I gotta check out his other films now.
He's gonna be one of the most memorable actor out of this generation, for sure!

I honestly never understood it till now. I was never paying attention to him and now I have and he’s honesty just the greatest. I feel bad for being so late to appreciate him, but I’m here now and I understand it. I don’t plan on leaving. I’ll just keep finding more reasons to love him, because that’s currently happening.

Definitely one of my favorite movies of Ryan’s. I just love his acting there… and he does well to be different for any character he plays. I really appreciate it, seeing it now. I love him even more each day.

I've seen Half Nelson a long time ago but still think about it quite often. His performance in that movie is one that really stuck with me.
When I was younger, his name kept coming up & people (guys included) kept raving about him as a heart throb. I had seen pictures of him & was surprised because he didn’t look like a Hollywood heartthrob to me. He just had a normal pleasant face.
So I started watching his films because I wanted to understand his appeal & then I really got it.
It’s really inspiring to know that talent & humanity can shape people’s views of what “goodlooking” looks like.
My favourite from him is the scene at the bar in "Nice guys"

He doesn't say a word, but the physical comedy cracks me up every time
I think one of his rare and most highly refined talents is acting like his characer is just barely not able to hide/repress his emotions.
His characters don't seem emotionless, but also don't seem too emotional as if he were acting. He's walking that fine line of reality.
He's not trying to convey the emotion directly and bluntly, he's showing you how you would try to mask it. This is why his more emotional scene are captivating even for people who aren't generally interested in that kind of stuff. And this is why his unhinged scenes, where his characters blow up, have more weight as well: because you know he tried to hide that and get over it, and you probably know how it feels to get pushed over that edge where you can't contain yourself anymore.
He’s such a great actor and a great guy.
So many great movies and characters, and Lars and the real girl is probably his most underrated movie/performance imo. Loved it

I grew in love with him immediately seeing Drive in the theater. That dude immersed me into the movie like I was kid again watching Star Wars. I always knew the dude is a badass.

So glad people are starting to recognize how diverse he is. How charming he is as an actor. He can do it all. He’s quite a talent. He has the face that can look really attractive and also absolutely mundane so you just notice the acting. He’s struck gold.
That is what I have always said is the criteria for being a great actor, when the audience remembers the character, not the actor who played the character. Ryan is that great, definitely. Not many get to that level, in fact, most of the A-List actors don't.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, I've only watched one movie of his (Barbie) but has seen clips and interviews and memes throughout the years so I'm not completely blank on him. And, damn, every single movie clips you put here enticed me to watch them all! Got me hooked on instantly. Even though I tend to avoid certain stories/genres for unserious personal reasons. That's how charismatic he is and how skilled/talented he is at his craft. Just wow.

I’ve never liked the guy, but I think my prejudice extends to some of his movies rather than the guy himself now that I’ve seen your video.
It certainly made me accept that he has that key ingredient that makes all great actors great, and that’s range. He can sing, dance, do macho hard and goofy crazy… he leans into whatever is required of him…and that takes talent.
That toilet scene from the Nice Guys really cracks me up every time I see it, there’s an unrehearsed spontaneity to it that gets me every time, holding the gun, dropping the cigarette and constantly kicking the door open is comedic genius…I don’t know how many takes that took, but if I were Crowe, I’d have been cracking up every time.
And you’re spot on about the micro facial movements, their subtlety can’t be overstated in connecting the audience to a character.

It's funny, if you watch the video of the notorious Oscar mishap (where they announced the wrong film for Best Picture) he is at the back suppressing his laughter whilst everyone else looks mortified or angry.

Seriously though I think he adds shades of emotion and greyness to his characters. Whether it’s vulnerability, fear, he makes it relatable.
He's insanely talented and I think he's one of the only serious actors in Hollywood who can perfectly play the "Himbo" character. He makes movies like "The nice guys" much more enjoyable than they might be with someone else in the role. Looking forward to seeing The Fall Guy later in the year as the trailer absolutely gave off more Himbo Gosling energy (also Emily Blunt is in it and she's crazy talented too).

for me "Only God Forgives" is the one that sealed it for me. There's a reason one of my favorite directors, Nicolas Winding Refn keeps working with him.
Nicolas Winding Refn is also responsible of putting the light on Mads Mikkelsen (Pusher trilogy, Bleeder and Valhalla rising) and Tom Hardy in "Bronson" - showing the world what these actors were capable of.
The combo of gosling and refn is amazing. I hope they round out the spiritual trilogy of movies
My friend worked with him on the movie about the Jinx dude and said he was the most down to earth, chill dude imaginable. They smoked together and he was just a normal guy. He's been one of my favorites since i heard that.

Gosling is a competent actor and serious man. Good looks, good performance, good interaction with the movie industry and the outside world. Would like to see him also in more serious historical movies as well. If they ever make a movie about Franklin Roosevelt, I think he should play him, they look alike.

Gosling really does have serious range, something I've somewhat taken for granted until seeing this. I've seen a lot of his movies and he always adds a great deal to their overall enjoyment, but this is the first time I've given thought to his career and just how much versatility he has as an actor. He seems able to completely remove his ego when playing a role and just doesn't give a shit if his character is bald, psychotic, charming, or a degenerate. The audience will be treated to this man going all in with the performance, showing a level of dedication and talent that I think could be fairly compared to Nic Cage or Daniel Day-Lewis.

Hey I remember him as 'The Young Hercules'; he was pretty good, but no way would anyone have guessed that he'd become this superstar actor. I think he chose roles really well. The Notebook was a necessary step into popularity and lead role, Drive really propelled him as someone that could play a more indie edgy character, and it helped that the film grew in popularity thanks to various other influences. And then Place Beyond The Pines, while perhaps not as well known, is really a masterpiece of a movie which proved his screen presence. I mean, the guy leaves the film before the half way mark and it's still all about him!

I love that he’s one of those actors really all of us have gotten behind, whether you like the ‘literall me’ stuff or really dislike those sigma edits, regardless of the fandom most of us like Ryan Gosling in at least something if not most things he’s involved in. He’s hilarious but he has such versatility. You can go from Blade Runner 2049 to Nice Guys without skipping a beat. Or from Place Beyond the Pines to La La Land. One of my favourites is First Man, really restrained subtle performance of intense grief and determination, quite underrated compared to other Damien Chazelle movies. There’s at least one of the many facets of Ryan Gosling to enjoy. And most of all he’s a genuinely wonderful dude irl, he keeps things private, has a loving partner, is largely known to be humble or at least very decent, and the way ppl talked about him on the set of Barbie is so heartwarming.
Also ive heard some ppl criticise his performance in BR2049 for being flat lifeless and emotionless (which duh he’s the new breed of replicant, restrained emotions is the entire plotpoint), but you can really tell whats lurking beneath the surface, and it shows how often we misinterpret good acting with just loud, often shouting and very over-the-top acting, subtlety is just as important, if not more so if you really want people to see a person and not just a big showy scene-chewing award-appeal. Ryan Gosling has shown that, and especially not sticking to just one type of performance, and his looks are obviously important but unlike some he moved away from heartthrob roles really quick.

I recall watching him in that performance with my mouth open at his mastery. After that, I couldn’t get enough. He reminds me of Nick Cage in the 80s, 90s…from Valley Girl to Leaving Las Vegas. But Gosling has an easy confidence that must come from his years as a child star who saw everything early, and decided to relax and make himself an empty vessel instead of worrying about outside opinion. Bravo!

I remember first seeing him in Breaker High as a teen myself ( we are the same age with just 4 days difference). I liked him as an actor back then and it was cool to see him pop up in bigger and better stuff over the years. Well deserved.

A great actor really moves you. Makes you feel as if YOU are emotionally invested in their experiences. Ryan delivers that in spades. He is in my favorite movie ever! DRIVE! Phenomenal movie, which I discovered was based on a book. But when I bought the book, I saw it was just a short story. Impressive.

Just watched La La Land today, while I'm not very fond of musicals the love story was exceptional. The final nod Ryan does is truly heartbreaking.
