Players always say how impenetrable Djokovic is from the baseline, but my god does this video prove that. Just such consistent depth on his shots and he never misses. Murray's only chances were when Nole came to the net and Andy didn't make the most of those. Just ruthless. I was exhausted just watching this. Makes you realize how hard guys like Fed Rafa and Stan must've been crushing the ball just to get it by Djoker.
One major reason Andy did not win more slams is due to his lack of agression. He can rally with the best of them but he was rarely offensive-minded against the Big 3. That's why he only has 3 slams vs 5/6.
They are near identical players, Djokovic is just better in most regards. Murray's a better slicer/volleyer but that's about it, doesn't have the power on either wing nor the ball placement of Djoker
After backer came on board Novak's second serve, slice backhand and volleys improved tremendously. He is as good as Murray now though Murray hits the ball even more flat on his BH side
Murray had more power on both wings, the problem is he couldn't always control it as he isn't capable of generating enough spin so is forced to play within himself most of the time. I believe he has the biggest shots of the top 4 apart from maybe Rafa's FH when he fully flattens it out. Peak Fed's FH too (before the more spin oriented stroke from 08 onwards) comes pretty close but imo it's still a fraction behind Rafa and Murray's biggest bombs.
Not boring for me honestly. The groundstrokes and defense by both were terrific.. Djokovic only won because his serve was better and commited lesser unforced errors
When I was younger and clueless, I thought this match was boring. Now that I know more about tennis, I look at this match, and in retrospective man, this match was insane. People with tennis knowledge know this final was great. I mean, that 2nd set is one of the best in Grand Slams. Murray really tried, he was really aggressive, forcing Djokovic to play some meters behind the baseline. But Novak was just better. His returns were too much for Murray's game.
Federer is so unlucky that Djokovic just happened to play what might have been the best match of his career against him in the semifinals, Djokovic played nowhere near the same level in the final, but it was still plenty good enough to beat Murray, who wasn't playing too badly himself. If Federer met this Djokovic, it would have been a much closer and more competitive match that could have gone either way.
To be fair, it´s not like Federer and Nadal DIDN´T let this happen (that would haben meant beating them on court I understand). They just took advantage of these two being not 100%.
Good match. Goundstrokes were terrific. Djokovic was only more consistent then Murray, which is why he won. Otherwise, these two had an incredible battle.
the courts at AO are getting slower and slower every year. hardly any winners from players. seems they are just practicing. most of the rallies are similar :(
Not really sure what some of these comments are on about. The quality of this match was absolutely incredible. It seems like every other point was a great rally. Maybe I’m just too used to watching tennis in 2024
Henny Huang It was also just a much better match. Djokovic was playing arguably the best match of his career (with Doha 2016 final as a close second.) Yet Federer still managed to fight back in that third set to take one from him. It was a very high quality match, and Roger was unlucky to face an incredibly strong Djokovic, otherwise the scoreline would have been tighter. This match, in comparison, is dull. There's no energy. Neither of them were playing particularly well. Federer would have stomped Murray in straights, like he has in the past few years Federer would have had a very solid chance versus Djokovic if he played like he did here in the final, rather than how he played in the semis.
MrPatrickbuit Federer had a good shot to beat Djokovic in the semis but only if he would play like in the third set by giving himself more time on his groundies
Yes but Djokovic would never put such a boring display against Federer. He was bored himself against Murray. Federer brings the best out of him. I mean its Federer. The same goes for Nadal.
Djokovic's game is too similar to Murrays. Murray has to be more agressive to beat him in big matches, like he was able to do more often around 2012/2013
Murray’s game simply lacks variety in terms of angles shot selection. He seems content to just push the ball down the middle of the court and relies on his consistency.
I agree, in the past Murray used to go for more drop shots which he does well, but going toe to toe with a hot Djoko from the baseline without variations of slice, net approach, drop shots is a very difficult and demanding task..
I am in no position to criticise. I think one of the reasons why the modern day players have so much injury is their relentless pursuit of that "one more ball". They need to be more aggressive and attack the net. So many points on this video is just dogged rallies.
George Georgio Frankly, due to advancements in physique, racquet technology, and court baselining has become the best risk/reward strategy by a landslide. These players want to win, even if it means risking an injury.
Personally, I felt the first set was great but after that, they were going at it at 3/4 pace and it was difficult to watch. What on earth was those last two sets... but Novak had it under control when it really mattered, he just seemed out of it in the less important moments. Murray played better as the match wore on but otherwise, he wasn't going after the ball and wasn't one of his better matches.
Murray really is a great player. But you can really see that while he defended as well or better than anyone, he just can’t create offense out of thin air the way the Big 3 can.
This has got to be one of the most boring grand slam finals I've ever seen. I've watched this only twice now and I've watched the 2017 AO final at least 15 times
This endless back and forth is a nightmare. This last decade of tennis has taken us to new heights, but man has it turned boring. We need variation again. We need faster courts, we need something else besides back, and forth, back and forth, back and forth... When the most entertaining guy on your is almost 40, we know tennis is in trouble.

All I see is a lot of Murray floating balls into the middle at 1/2 pace. Why does he not go for more depth, power, angles, etc... but nope he just floats into the middle

May be slower shots with surprise placement should have tried. and be an aggressor never be defensive!!. I think Murray has more weapons.. but you also need to know the weakness of your opponents..
Gpaul326 exactly , you have to padlock him with mid central balls , give the ball more Air and make use of that floating slice , given the chance you have to be agressive
How is Andy Murray #1 right now?? I understand he rarely misses but he has a losing record against Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic. He just kind of floats his shots with barely any spin. If he actually hit with more spin and more depth and obviously POWER he would win way more.

Murray in the first two sets just pats the ball back to Djokovic as if he's already given up 😂 No intent to win other than finally in the 3rd set he shows some aggression and keeps it alive until grandly choking in the tie break. How does this guy even get to the finals playing this kind of 'pat the ball back to the opponent kind of tennis' all the time.. SMH
MrPatrickbuit What i would like to see from Murray in this matchup is the hard backhand cross court into, he should trade cross court backhand exchanges with djokovic. As a change up he should play deep to the Centre and quickly look to jump for that hard cross court backhand or move him side side by taking the balk early .
