  • Novak Djokovic beats British number one Andy Murray in the Australian Open final by three sets to one, becoming only the second man to win five titles.
    Djokovic, the world number one, came through 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-0.
The match was Murray's fourth Australian Open final - a tournament he has never won. Djokovic - the top seed and favorite to win - had never lost a final in Melbourne.
At almost four hours long, the final produced some world-class tennis.
Murray has won two of the eight grand slam finals he had played in whilst Djokovic has won eight of the 15 he has appeared in.
A tight first set gave an indication of the long game that lay ahead. Both players broke serve and the set headed for a tie break, which Djokovic just managed to edge.
In the second set, Djokovic began to stamp his authority on the match. The Serb powered into a 4-2 lead, but Murray fought back, winning three games in a row to make it 5-4. After failing to capitalize on a set point, Djokovic won a break back and the set headed into another tie break.
The tie break produced some of the best tennis of the match, with Murray going on to claim four set points. He won the third, leveling out the match.
Murray carried his momentum through to the third set, breaking Djokovic's serve at the first attempt. Djokovic appeared to be suffering from an ankle injury, but he managed to break back and pull level at 2-2. As the match passed the three-hour mark with the third set tied at 3-3, Murray missed a break point and momentum swung towards five-time champion Djokovic. After the Serb took a 5-3 lead, a frustrated Murray threw his racket on the ground. Djokovic broke Murray's serve again to take the third set 6-3.
At the start of the fourth set, Djokovic pounced again, breaking Murray's serve to take a 2-0 lead. Murray appeared to be rattled, losing serve again to hand Djokovic a commanding three-game advantage. Djokovic showed no sign of letting his lead slip, and powered through to a 5-0 lead. The world number one served for the match and claimed his fifth Australian Open title.

This one was Murray's golden chance win the Australian Open. Easy put away at 5-5 in the first set tie break would have brought up set point, but went for too much and missed it. Wins the second set (should have won it at 5-4). Has a break at the start of the third and then misses an easy up the line pass at 3-3 30-40. But both times he fell for Djokovic's rope a dope tactics- he was staggering around the court like a man who's been wandering round the desert for a week with no water and then made a miraculous recovery as soon as Murray started missing. Funny that. But Murray should have known better and kept his eye on what he was doing and ignored Novak.

@@koooorn1 I learned a new phrase “rope a dope” today from Sam Sharp and I agree with you Murray looked better, just slightly, than Djokovic both fh and bh. So as a Djokovic fan I admitted that. Now what you’re wrong about is you claimed Djokovic faked and Murray fell for the trap or something. Absolutely nonsense. Djokovic doesn’t beat opponents by hitting. A lot of times, especially vs Federer, Nadal, Murray he is out-hit but he still won because he has the ability to run, scramble or do any weird thing to put the ball back on court one more time, many times, to increase his chance to win rallies. So yes, sometimes it looks ugly like the way you guys described here using the guy in the desert analogy, but did he fake that. Hell no. He was fighting hard and breathing hard and had no time to think about faking. You assumed in tennis if you hit better you’ll win. Wrong. In tennis, and a lot of sports, defense is also important. You want to hear my take on this? Two things that helped Djokovic win: his grit and splits. His grit was just better than Murray’s. And his splits to save a ball, Murray didn’t even have.

He's done it in other matches before when he awkwardly jerks or falls over when he loses a point as if to blame it on that, then raises his game massively straight after . For some weird reason he didn't finish the rally by going to the net and allowed his opponents to readjust and prolong the rally.
