2004-2009 Federer would've beaten this stan in 4 sets, Federer slice basically neutralizes Wawrinka backhand as he hits the ball in an uncomfortable position where he can't generate pace. While with Djokovic, he hits the ball in a very comfortable zone for his backhand to generate pace. Nadal is also a player who would've beaten him as he would've targeted his backhand with insane toppins which Stan doesn't like.

Yeah, this match was totally insane. Until 6/1, 5/2 probably very few players played in such a stunning form as Wawrinka did there. He was firing both backhands and forehands down from everywhere out of nothing. The way Djokovic turned that second set is just remarkable and proved to be his biggest weapon throughout the years, being the strongest mental player of them all. From a Federer fan also.

    • @2CSST2
      @2CSST2 3 года назад +11

@@Luis-nr7vz That's also exactly the thing I find the most crazy about this match, how Djokovic managed to find a way back from getting completely outplayed. It's one thing to be down but having at least outplayed your opponents a few times, so you know you can comeback if you reproduce the right patterns, but Djokovic had none of those despite having tried everything.
      - Good tactical shot placement to create a weakness? Nope, not only Wawrinka always replied perfectly to not create openings on his side, but did so with power shots
      - Solid defense, forcing the opponents to hit more and more winners until he makes an error? Nope, again Wawrinka pretty much ALWAYS had all the shots he needed
      - Applying more pressure, coming to the net? Nope, Wawrinka finds the passing shot, still not a single crack
And etc. it just went on and on Djokovic getting outplayed and broken again and again. And then somehow he starts pulling off even more crazy slide defense shots, and he EVENTUALLY creates some small flaw in Wawrinka's confidence. Gets him to hit just a few errors, then he immediately seizes the tiny opportunity and starts pulling off insane attacks, rolling on from there. Endless persistence, ridiculous defenses with inhuman flexibility, and perfect exploitation of any slight weaknesses... Crazy!

Personally I think since they slowed all the courts and balls down to make Rafa and Djokovick more competitive with Federer this absolutely hurt Wawrinka (and Federer). Wawrinka plays with much more power and actually GOES for shots as opposed to just returning shots like Djokovick and Nadal. They are boring as fuck. They look like cowards on the courts......even though they win more.
I believe this is a flaw in the current situation of tennis because very few fans in that stadium was cheering for Djokovick like they were Wawrinka. Why Wawrinka? They hardly know him. He rarely wins. But fans naturally are drawn to people who try to ACHIEVE as opposed to try not to fail. It's a boring fucking lame ass way to look at the world and especially to win tennis matches.

Hardly any weakness within so many hours by any of the two, but continously incredible level of play until the very end. I can't even think of any match between the Great Three the last 20 years that carried such an intensity.
And as quite often, the match point is a wrap-up of the entire match. Though The Man gives it absolutely everything in this match of his life, the machine somehow brings back exactly as much, and almost by tragicomical chance pulls his opponent to the net to place the final blow.

holl01 but most of the top players head remain still when executing their groundstrokes. Federers head remain still when he is playing his backhand too. The difference with djokovics backhand apart from the likes of Murray, is not only the head remaining still, it's the ability to extend his arms fully on follow through of the stroke to make use of the torque produced from core (abdominal, glute muscles). That's why its harder for opponents to read his down the line backhand too.

Stan started winning when he was already almost 30! Incredible, he's the only player who can beat Djokovic in a GS now. It's just his style that doesn't suit Novak (when he's on). And it is strange that he's on just for the slams. Probably he doesn't care about other tournaments as much. He knows he can't be No1 so he focus for the slams only, smart.

Sizzling match from Wawrinka. When he's on, he could take on anybody. But the display of mental strength from Djokovic in this match (and many others) was stunning.

wtf are you talking about ? Djoko is not a pusher, he's very agressive against most of the guys and that's why he wins. The problem is when you facing a player that hits harder than you, it's getting difficult to be agressive, obviously... Usually it's djokovic who makes his opponent running from left to right but here the power speak for itself and he has no choice but to rely on his defensive skills most of the time.
We could say Monfils or Simon are pusher, saying djoko plays like them is stupid...

This was THE match which showed Stan's incredible resurgence. Before he was decent but now great. Magnus Norman is an amazing coach, and Stan came into his own after this defeat. 3 grand slam finals, all three won, all vs the World no. 1. Fiercely competitive. Sure, he is extremely inconsistent, but that's always been Stan. But in the latter stages of a Slam now, he can and will beat anybody.

What a brilliant point from Djokovic to finish that amazing match. Stan certainly showed what he had in him to take Djoko to 5 sets at Djoko's favourite GS where he is King. So the 3 GS's Wawrinka won afterwards in his career was not really a big surprise. Wawrinka can beat anyone on his day but well done Djoko for going on to defend his title again (hope he finds his form again in 2018). Really great match!

I don't think anyone ever improved mentally as much as Wawrinka. He always had the game. It's true his forehand, movement and speed improved in the last few years, but the big thing he made is improved mentally. He was an unreal choker in the past. You can clearly see that in this match. He was totally owning Djokovic 6-1 5-2, and then suddenly he started making stupid errors, being nervous. He choked that second set, and also choked after being a break up early in the fifth. For sure he still has chokes (WTF 2014 semifinal is a great example) but he really improved his confidence recently, that's how he won RG 2015 final.

It's been almost ten years since one of the highest-quality matches of all time. I still remember randomly watching a short highlight video the day before this match happened of Wawrinka's third round match and thinking how amazing Wawrinka was playing (I had become a bit of a fan of his late 2012 and was expecting he could slightly rise soon) and thinking this could be a really good one. but BOY I could not have expected something like this. Definitely didn't expect all-time level even though I did sense Wawrinka was really moving up a gear with some of the shots he was hitting. This was an absolutely insane all-time match that can be put up there in the same tier and league as the best ever. An unlikely round of 16 match that has universally become known as a classic. Crazy match, Wawrinka played some of the best tennis arguably ever played and he didn't win the match. Because unfortunately he played this tennis against one of the greatest players that's ever lived. And they both pushed each other to the very edge.

  • @caunteya

Jeremiah I have watched ALL OF the matches Rafa-Roger has played multiple times and I would probably consider the -09 final their best match (even if the -17 final had a final set at a completely different level).
However, Roger imploded in the final set of that match which takes it down a little bit. The first 4 sets were amazing though.
But overall I undoubtedly consider this match the best I have ever seen. It was played at a ridiculous level throughout and the way the important points were won..
