I have had a springer now for 18 months. She is best friends with our cats and "takes care" of the chickens, so it all depends how you bring them up. She absolutely has a high chase drive and only yesterday chased wild ducks into the water and then swam after them - only to catch them up and swim alongside them playfully. She needs a huge amount of exercise - a full country ramble for 2 hours per day. I'd say the most difficult things we had to deal with was her picking up and attempting to eat just about anything as a puppy - which she is growing out of now, stealing clothing and shoes, which we now have turned into a game and she always gives back, and pulling on the lead, which we've only been able to resolve with a Halti. I'd say the thing that most surprised me was what a good watchdog she is, and she does show protective instincts but only to bark not to guard. Overall the best and most affectionate dog I have ever owned, She's a star. :)

I got a Springer Spaniel as my first dog and I find watching tutorials on RUclips help me train her very quickly and the more time goes on it gets easier. Although not having experience with dog training I feel like I'm making good progress by being strict and consistent

I have a springer spaniel, got him as mother in law has had 2, they’ve been good, as much as I love him you have hit the nail on the head, he’s been chasing things. But am looking at a gundog trainer. Realised maybe he was not the best breed for us but I will work with him. If I ever get a puppy again I will look into the breed more and not get one because someone else has one, all dogs are different.

Can you do a video on the differences between springer and cocker spaniels? I’m trying to decide what dog would be best for our family and think I’ve narrowed it down to these two. I’m struggling to find a good recourse to compare the two! When you say they can’t be left alone for two long, does that mean that they wouldn’t fit well with a dual income family?

I'm glad I found you guys a channel your channel is very insightful although I live in the United States and our cocker spaniels are American cocker spaniels they differ I think only in looks I don't know I've never been face to face with a an English cocker spaniel but I'm sure they're basically the same right hopefully. But yeah so far your videos have been in the only two I've watched have been completely on point from what I deal with day to day with my four American cocker spaniels. My sister-in-law who didn't have much insight not that I felt that she did we're a family of farmers and so they're just another dog to us I guess we've had we've had we've had everything from Rottweilers to Blue heelers Australian shepherds and German shepherds you know throughout our years a total as a family. And Pitbull dogs. But by far the cocker spaniels are way more security driven I would say with all that barking that they do the cats that are on our farm they generally don't bother them unless they look at one of us and we're upset about something a cat did these dogs will freaking key into that and freaking chase that cat down and kill it I kid you not I never trained these dogs to do that. But I just think that's just one of those things that dogs do to an inferior animal like a cat they don't view cats as you know equals I don't believe and if they do they must have been raised with them when they were way little puppies and that's just all they know that that cat is just part of their pack.

Helpful advice. I have just now started to leave my springer at home alone after about six months of pandemic living side by side. She is managing it well. Could it be that she is comfortable in the home and a bit older and now better able to handle the separation?

We are about to get our Springer puppy tomorrow. We also have chickens. I was hoping to be able to raise him to get used to them but it’s sounding like that might not be possible?

We had two springers and would keep them in the house while the chickens were fed. When let out they would rush across to the chicken enclosure Getting under the fence and finish what was left and never touched the chickens in the barn or enclosure. If a chicken got out Archie would chase it down picking it up in his mouth at the top of the wing and carry it back to the enclosure. The chickens were never harmed when he did this.
These two springers even adopted a baby goat that had been abandoned and shared their space with it quite happily.

@@andrewgreen3564 thank you! I’m hoping to get him accustomed to them a little bit each day. Would love for our Springer to eventually be able to play in the same yard as the chickens. 🤞

@@littlebird8135 we lost Archie about a month ago aged 12 and the house was so empty without a springer. We now have a springer pup and my wife has an Instagram page for him. Lenny_the _springer. He is such a cutie, enjoy your journey with a wonderful breed of dog.

We have chickens, cats as well as rabbits and Guinea pigs and have been offered a springer puppy.

@@ForeverInFaith we still can’t let our Springer near the chickens. He will be 2 years old in feb. He has accidentally caught them a few times and injured them. He loves to chase seagulls on the beach too. There is definitely something in their dna that likes to chase birds!
We also have a cat and he is fine with our cat. They’re a beautiful, loving, snuggly sweet breed; such a good family dog... they just LOVE hunting birds.
