I've had springers all my life. They are a great dog. I now have 2 children and am considering adopting a crazy springer. I love them. They are fantastic with children. Ideally, I'd rather rescue one but my son, 5, is nervous of dogs so we will need a pup.

I was 8 when I first met my proper childhood Springer Spaniel who was a 1 year old rescue dog, terrified of everything but especially tea towels however my Mum taught him to stop being scared and even start barking etc the tea towel fear remained for nearly 5 years after first being rescued and was by far his longest standing fear so the previous evil bastard clearly hit him hard with them. He was the kindest, softest dog ever around Children especially after my Mum gave birth to a new born who he took to be his own without hesitation. He lived to 14 years and 8 months and despite his awful start to life is probably the best dog I will ever know.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with both in the Scottish highlands when I worked as a water bailiff tracking poachers, I can testify both are unbelievably capable dogs and we would work 1 lab with 1 springer (both field dogs) where one lacked the other would fill the gap. Springers did suffer a little with cold water in the ear and held a lot of water mud etc that would freeze on, but they were the most active through the heather, I think both dogs are fantastic working partners and family members. Right I’m off to walk my lab!

My mother grew up with a Springer. I grew up with a Springer. My sister’s three children grew up with a Springer (one certifiably crazy and had to be rehomed) and she had a Springer after her children flew the nest. My brother married a woman who brought a Black Lab to the marriage whose allegiance switched to my brother. That family grew with a Yellow Lab and nine Black Lab puppies. My childhood Springer was docile and devoted to her pack family. Minimal training. My brother’s Black Lab was docile, well-mannered and devoted to his pack. The female Yellow Lab was a mess. Terrible mother, nearly untrainable. I love both breeds, but would personally go with … a Golden! Or a Springer.

Did you say a labrador needs more exercise than a Springer 😮! As a gamekeeper and a fella that has owned both dogs for over 30 years, a can tell you the springer is the better dog all round, the labs a smarter but not by much, the Springer is faster harder working more grateful more rewarding i can go on

The Springer is split into two varieties, bench and field. I've never heard of a show lab. A well bred Springer has no separation anxiety. The lab sheds endlessly as does the Springer, however with a trim the Springer requires no extra care. The lab is prone to hip dysplasia, bad elbows and more.

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 10 месяцев назад

The Springer I had suffered from hip Dysplasia and didn't have good elbows he did however live to 14 years and 8 months and neither of those issues properly showed up until 13 years old.

We are one of those families who got a “doodle” an AKC registered English Springer Spaniel crossed with an AKC registered poodle. Part of the contract is that she would be spayed. Though the family usually produced only purebred show dogs, they only bred “sproodles” when they found the right combination of dogs- and this was only every few years.
This is only our second dog- and my husband has bad allergies except to poodle crosses. We are looking at a rescue for our next family member. We just didn’t have the knowledge to rehabilitate a pup that wasn’t home raised and socialized as soon as possible. We weren’t even able to pick her up until she was 13 weeks old- the extra training and socializing more than made up for missing out on the “cute” puppy weeks. She gets tons on exercise and stimulation. Due to her wonderful temperament and her “hypoallergenic” nature (“hypo” just means “less”- so of course someone could have a reaction to these types of dogs).
She is in training to be a therapy dog and her sweet nature, perfect size, amazing work ethic, and truly “hypo” allergenic nature will help her help a lot of other people in need.
I get she is a “mutt/mix” and so does the breeder. The decision to have her spayed was non- negotiable. If for some reason I would have to give her up, she would go back to the breeder to live as a family pet.
As we learn more about dogs we are becoming more confident in specific breed rescues. Please don’t judge us for getting a “mutt” as we learn about training and caring for dogs. Our mutt Nessie has been such a lovely girl. I’d get a Springer in a heartbeat if my husband didn’t have allergies.
I’m sorry for the rant- but I’m finding choices in dogs are always controversial. I feel as long as you are not adding to a kill shelter, are a responsible owner getting a dog from a good breeder (or rescue), training and teaching it well and getting professional help for any dangerous issues- I think we are all just doing our best to have a companion/companions with us who have evolved alongside ourselves for over 50,000 years.

WOW, you are soooo mixed up! I had 4 labs ( 3 for hunting) and 3 spaniels. Never heard of a show or hunting type in Labs. On the other hand, there are 2 types of ESPs, a "bench" which is the show type, and the "hunter" type. They look quite different. As for energy levels, it is quite the contrary. Maybe you have an overbred lab, which often creates neurotic dogs.
My present dog is an English Springer Spaniel. At 15 months, and the runt, he has what I call a set of 15 full loaded batteries ! My most energetic lab had 5 batteries, 7 when the hunting guns came out of the cases.
In my experience and owner of a 7th dog, Labs start settling down after 2 yrs, while English springers, cockers, and Welsh spaniels will take 4 years to start focusing and to calm down ;) They take more work to train, they will trick you and show off their skills but all of a sudden, they will ignore your command and play dumb. They eventually listen but laterrrrr.... Nevertheless, they are soooo lovely and much lighter than a 100 pound male lab who needs a bath!
Spaniels and Labradors can both get fat. Hunting dogs are always hungry. When I see a fat lab or spaniel, I know it's being overfed and under exercised. Hunting breeds need to run, not walk around the block. As for the shiny coat, both breeds will have one from regular brushing and a little bit of bacon fat!
Giving the wrong info about a breed can cause a dog to end up in a rescue facility, which is sad.

My parents had a Springer, then got a Labrador. They lived up to the saying " Labs are born half trained, Springers die half trained." The Lab was skittish and nervous, the Springer the opposite. The Lab was obedient, the Springer was selective about obedience. They were each great dogs.

I'm not entirely sure what training and certification goes into become a "Certified Canine Leader". Someone needs to gain a little more experience before they start posting videos. I find the people doing these videos to be of very limited experience and knowledge when it comes to the many genetic lines of ESS out there. Please do some more research before you try to inform people about ESS.
