    In the early 2000s, my dad was coming home from an overnight shift at the port, and he saw a dog just like Griffin looking confused and scared on the road. He picked her up and brought her home, and we spent a long time washing the icicles from her fur and trying to keep her warm. She was terrified of any loud noises. If anyone raised their voice, she ran to my brother's room, stuck her head under his bed, and put her paws over her ears.
    We didn't have Google back then, but we asked around and found out that she was an English Springer Spaniel. Certainly someone would be looking for her! We called our local vet and put up posters, but nobody came. That was fine by us, because she was slowly coming out of her shell.
    We moved from the city to 80 acres of wild property. This girl blossomed. She was so happy, her little nubby tail never stopped wagging, so we called her Wags. She was the happiest girl, who loved being able to dig holes wherever she wanted and run all over God's creation. Wags brought us so much joy for many years before passing away around 2015.
    Seeing Griffin brings back so many wonderful memories. His family is so blessed to have him.

    Griffin is gorgeous. I lost my spanna 18 months ago, and I can confirm that they are a truly lovely breed. I can also confirm that they believe clean water is toxic, while their obsession with muddy puddles that have goodness only knows what in them is second only to the promise of a tennis ball. They would run until their legs fell off, and still try after that.
    They are also oddly dirt proof. They could come in from a walk, filth from nose to tail, throw themselves to the ground (SO dramatic) and fall asleep. Half an hour later, a spotless spanna would stand up, leaving a dog-shaped dirt pile behind.
    I miss you Jakey Jake. Bonkers and completely fearless like all the best spannas are, and such a good, good boy.

      Growing up, my family obtained a rejected Springer from the breeder for free. My dad wanted a pure bred dog but didn't want to pay (that's another story). The dog was soooooo naughty and incredibly fearless. Granted he was not properly trained he would run for hours and dive for rocks in the creek and seemingly not tire. Omg he was a terrible escape artist, charging the door if anyone came to visit where he'd run around around tramping flowers for ours. We could not train him to stay off furniture. As soon as we left he'd sit on my mom's luxury sofa like a king with a view out the bay window. He also swiped a sandwich right out of my dad's hands mid-bite. He liked starting fights with other dogs-- nothing malicious, he was just an ass trying to hump everyone. He jumped off the roof of a house, landing on an umbrella table, got hit by a car, ate rat poison and drank gallons of filthy creek water and he lived to be 16 until we had to put him down. He was even excited to go to his final destination and fought until the very end. I feel badly that he wasn't properly trained, but he'd been returned twice to the breeder. He really did his own thing and I believe in his mind the punishment was always worth the crime.

      @RaniaIsAwesome Sounds like springer rage/guarding behaviour. It happens when they're not trained out of it and gets worse if you don't get a handle on it. It certainly wasn't normal for your dog to attack you - springers are normally much more controlled than that and love kids to the point of deference.

    • @springertube
      @springertube Год назад

      @@itsonlysound Good thoughts. We've had springers (no secret, my YT "handle") all our lives. Rage, despite the reports (it's the squeaky wheels, however rare, that get heard and then proliferated "out there" - making it seem a more regular "thing" - not the good ones) - an anomaly borne out of abuse and/or bad back-yard or irresponsible puppy mill breeding and/or (exacerbated by) combo of poor/absent socialization and even rudimentary training. I had one, beautiful 5 yr male rescue that was heading that direction were it not for our intervention... Some discipline (gentle but firm) letting him know he was loved but definitely not the alpha in the house, and some training--admittedly more difficult if older-- staved off most of if. Maybe 5% remained, an occasional "where did that come from?" no-teeth throat growl "brain tick" if he was displeased with something that we said or did... Remnant from abuse (unknown if...) or other combo of the above "maladies." Incredible dogs, I am biased, but to me the greatest-- and as so many have said those eyes!... but as with any breed (except Goldens - am sure not true but at least it seems!), know--via as much research as you can re background--what you're getting.

    Story time: I had a springer spaniel named Millie when I was a kid, and we kept her bib and skirt long most of the time. She loved going to the groomers and always came home looking very proud of how cute she looked! That is... Until the fateful day.
    We lived in a place with a big back yard and hill behind us, and unfortunately Millie's skirt got FULL of burs and mats one week. My mom requested that the groomer shave the bib/skirt off so we could start over. When I tell you that Millie was mortified... She came home tail down and looking so embarrassed. Poor baby, but we couldn't help laughing because her little belly was so round compared to her skinny legs! (I promise that was the only time we ever had to shave her lol. We took good care of her coat!)

      I had a cocker spaniel growing up who always paraded around the house when she came home from the groomer. She liked looking pretty. She even usually got a bow barrette.

    Me and my family adopted a Springer Spaniel when I was starting highschool. She was probably the happiest and playfulist dog I had ever seen. It didnt matter what mood you were in, she would run up to you and try to make you happy as much as she could. Her name, was Lovey-Dovey, or Dovey for short. When you said they have lovey-dovey personalities I immedately thought of her. She unfortanually passed away about 3 years ago with her second family. My parents at the time were going through a seperation and we couldnt take care of her anymore. Luckily my mom had a friend who was very good with rehoming dogs and found her a loving family who had recently gone through loosing one of the children. We spent 7 wonderful years with her and her second family spent 2. She was 9 years old when she passed and we buried her in her favorite spot in our yard. This breed of dog will always have a special place in our hearts, so I was happy to see this video today. Thank you for showing us how wonderful this breed is, and reminding me and my family of our wonderful Lovey-Dovey.

    First dog I ever had was an English Springer, my friend in primary schools mum bred them and she had a bit of a 'weird one', so I ended up with him. He was just too massive to be a show dog so a field dog it was. Much bigger than the leaner show dogs, bulked out like a rottweiler with much longer feathering on the legs and belly once he was full grown but the most gentle dog you'd ever meet and we spent my later teenage years getting him up to speed as a gun dog- not the greatest retriever but a solid for flushing game and could swim like a fish.
    If you do get one, or any of the spaniels they need their ears and paws checked after a good run to make sure there's no burrs or seeds stuck in them, walk them often and brush 2-3x a week
