What becomes so sadly problematic is that, while some American Kennel Club (AKC) standards, such as dogs' colors, do very much help assure dogs' health, other aspects of their breeding standards deeply hurt them. Ear and tail cropping, for instance, have been vehemently spoken out against by the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), the licensing board responsible for licensing veterinarians here in the US, as being incredibly painful and completely medically unnecessary for dogs, and yet the AKC has mandated both, despite the AVMA stepping forward and asking the AKC to please not require either, as they are both such cruel, medically unnecessary procedures. Pugs eyes are required by the AKC to bulge so badly, that it's common for their eyes to fall out of their skulls. Brachycephalic breeds, the ones whose noses are squished into their faces (French Bulldogs are an example of this), suffer such horrific breathing problems that it causes them to have incredible breathing problems for the entirety of their lives. Yet all of this and more is required by the AKC purely for the sake of aesthetics, at great expense to the dogs' health. The AKC sadly has a longstanding history of placing aesthetics before canine health, and then allowing health to be considered only when it does not get in the way of aesthetics, when, for the sake of the dogs, it should be the other way around: health should come first, and aesthetics should come into play only when they will not compromise dogs' health. I really wish that, rather than simply assuming that the AKC always has dogs' best interests at heart when it comes to breeding, people would instead look to veterinarians first and foremost when it comes to dogs' health, rather than simply assume that the AKC always follows what vets have stated is best for the dogs. The sad reality is that the AKC has a longstanding history of ignoring what vets have had to say about what's best for our dogs when it comes to their having the long, healthy lives that they deserve.

During a vacation, I had a chance to visit a Newfoundland breeder *in* Newfoundland. The dogs were being raised in the environment they were bred for, and swam in the ocean or river weekly. Salt water would 'bleach' their coats to a reddish colour in places. Such amazing temperament.
Thank you for raising awareness to ill-bred dogs and the ways in which they miss the breed’s standards. Ofc - no shame on Mugsy or his family… we are all just learning in our search for conditional canine love ❤️
Breed standards in general encourage ill-bred dogs. The loose skin on Neopolitans and other mastiffs and the myths surrounding them. The squatted nature of many bulldog breeds. Snub noses and bulging eyes from pugs and other terriers. All human induced suffering by people who care more about some ugly, arbitrary standard rather then what's good for the animal.
What a sweet boy. I wish i had the time to care for a dog. I'm too overwhelmed with 3 young human children and couldn't give any pet what they need, but Mugsy made me want to add to our family so badly.

Hi Vanessa! Your comment about the priority of your business is to keep the dog safe, really resonated with me. I am a retired nuclear engineer from the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Our working philosophy was that we ran the plant to be safe. Electricity was only made if all safety criteria were met first, last and always. I think I can similarly summarize your working philosophy is that you run your grooming business for the dogs to be safe, grooming happening only if all safety criteria are met first, last and always! 🙂👍👍
Thank you for pointing out the consequences of poor breeding vs. bred for health. I myself have met a GSD with rear end issues at the ripe old age of _two years old_ thanks to people just assuming that "purebred" means anything without health testing.

Mugsy has the most adorable facial expressions and such a gentle dog. Beautiful.
Mugs the rug ❤️❤️❤️
I think shaving him was the right choice, it will help him feel better in the long run, and he’s still adorable too, I’m glad the owners weren’t upset with you, the dog deserves to feel good in his own skin!
It will grow back?
@@onomatopejaB it can, but it might grow back in patchy or the fur might be really tough and hard to brush, it happens with any double coated dog, especially one with a color thats prone to alopecia
It's sad the coat had to go but without it you can really see what a powerful, solid doggo Mugsy is. An absolute puppers Unit.
This groomer should of report this poor dog's owners to authority, so they would take away this dog from these horrible people. Let your dog to suffer like this and never groom him for a 5 years is just cruel
@@krasavam1625maybe this dog was already rescued and now with an owner who will take care of him 🤷🏻♀️
I believe it's Mugzzy.
Sad? What's sad is someone paid to have him created and the mess he is in!!
Puppers?! Looks like a fully grown dog
As "depressing" as it is to see such an amazing coat not able to be saved, I'm betting Mugsy felt pretty amazing afterwards!
im just pissed she doesnt care about the animals. The owners had enough money to travel that far, but not enough to buy a dog brush? They shouldnt get to keep him :(
@@hospitalcakewalkthe breeding is disgraceful, also why travel 12 hours if his owner could shave him at home?…this tells me they wanted to keep his coat as a status symbol ,humans can be selfish pigs
@@leadbelly1495 EXACTLY!!!! That's what I'm saying. And she still didn't give any fucks and gave the dog back to its abusers. It's sick.

Mugsy absolutely does not have an aggressive bone in his body. What a sweetheart! I swear in that one shot he looked right at her and knew she was caring for him specially. "Oh, you did that for me?-That is new, and this is nice."
there are very very few newfies that are mean
Apart from the one time he showed discomfort with the brush. He was so chilled out such a big softy. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
A gentle dog getting ready to bite is like the quiet kid in class speaking up, you pay attention. Great dog overall, very cute and fluffy :D
You can see the gratitude in his eyes after you took that first mat out, he understood you were helping him
His coat was so matted I didn't realize he had lighter patches of fur. He looks so nice and I bet he feels so much lighter!
As She said was poorly bred, for color, crossed w/ Landseer, a black & white variety of Newfie. In Europe are recognized as different breed.
And probably feels much less itchy! I know it was a shame to shave the coat, but he's still adorable.
Beautiful bear doggy ❤ Such soulful eyes!
This before and after is stunning! It’s so kind of you how you groomed him. 12 hours driving to get to you, his parents must have been really, really concerned! I love that you always decide for the dog. Please keep your back safe, too!
If they were, I can't quite see why they waited for so long to get him groomed.
@@henrikw377its possible because hes so big and because his coat colour is known to be difficult that he was rejected by other groomers. his owners could have hit financially hard times and not be able to afford this groom anywhere else. vanessa provides grooms like these for free for people in hardship so i wouldnt be so quick to judge.
@@henrikw377 As Vanessa said, Mugsy has a difficult coat to work with. Probably, the owners don't have required instruments or enough expertise to deal with it. Also I bet that all other groomers declined Mugsy as their client due to his size and coat (can't blame them). I'm sure that this shaved coat will be significantly easier to handle for owners from now on.
So please don't judge the owners. If somebody should be blamed here it's irresponsible breeders.
@@WisdomOfWombats-xr3zj Very well said! We don’t know all the background information about the owner - which is their privacy. And a mixed coat can be incredibly difficult to maintain. Especially with his size.
Mugsy is very patient, really a nice doggo. He’s probably a dream to live with, and shouldn’t be hard to brush out if he’s not matted. Hope his owners start to brush him regularly.
He's the victim of animal abuse. No excuse from the owners.
@@robinminn271 - slow your roll on making judgements; you don't know the whole story. He may have come to them like that, and she did say they have been trying to find someone to help.
@@RandomFandomDragon I hate animal abuse. I stand by my opinion.
@@robinminn271you must have no idea how difficult it is to maintain a coat like this- i brushed my late dog everynght and he still would mate- after laying anywhere damp, walking in tall grass in the morning, playing with other dogs and getting drool on him, sitting in his water bowl, walking two seconds in the snow etc its a nightmare and i had to keep him shaved for the last 3 years of his life because he no longer tolerated daily grooming. All my animals are short hair now.
@@1hanagima This looked more like long-term neglect rather than "I've been trying but just can't keep up." He was matted and filthy judging by the color change before and after.
Your patience with huge dogs especially double-coated ones is really commendable, my dog is less than half the size but it still takes me about two hours to bathe him.
Mugsy looks great with his new look!!
No matter how you look at it, you made the right call. I can't imagine this dog feeling good with all that heavily matted coat.
As someone who’s had many Newfoundlands it’s heartbreaking to hear about the poor breeding. I’m still going to hope that Mugsy is well loved and cared for in the best way possible. I have rescued two newfs because of the lack of care that was given to them. I know these times are hard on people and with the prices of food for humans and dog food and can’t forget vet bills. I would help any newf at anytime and anywhere. Thank you for giving this angel a new well deserved new look!
hes not... that's literally why hes there? Look at him.. wtf.
@@hospitalcakewalk I’m not here to argue with you but do you know all the facts of this dog? I didn’t think so. Take a breath and whatever I mentioned in my comment I apologize to you. This was not meant to offend anyone especially to how angry you seem.
Have a nice weekend.
@@jamesfrommanitoba.1992 Dogs don't get severely matted overnight.
@@hospitalcakewalk The groomer literally said he was badly bred tho, and sure it must've been hard to try to take care of his unusual coat, but the owners let him get this bad. a dog's coat doesn't get like that in a few weeks...
@doo1819 That's exactly what I'm saying. This is severe neglect and she doesn't care. She gave the dog back :( who could look at this and just be like 'here, do it again.' :(
During a vacation, I had a chance to visit a Newfoundland breeder *in* Newfoundland. The dogs were being raised in the environment they were bred for, and swam in the ocean or river weekly. Salt water would 'bleach' their coats to a reddish colour in places. Such amazing temperament.
His haircut looks very handsome, and more importantly, he must feel so much better! Thank you for sacrificing your back to help him!
If they bred him for all the worst reasons at least they seem to have gotten a sweet personality. Great name. Such a brave groomer!
What a sweet, gentle boy Mugsy is 🥹🥰💕
What a sweet boy. I wish i had the time to care for a dog. I'm too overwhelmed with 3 young human children and couldn't give any pet what they need, but Mugsy made me want to add to our family so badly.
You will later. They grow up fast.
I’m sorry I can’t do more as a single mom of three but I love your videos and what you do to help people and animals
You should not feel apologetic for your selfless donation.
I know it's not ideal to shave double coats, but he looked absolutely fabulous when he was finished. 😍 I laughed so much when you were grooming him on the floor....it looked like you were brushing a hearth rug. What a handsome, gentle soul Mugsy is. Well done & I hope your back recovers soon.
there is a channel in my feed where the woman shears sheep and llamas. I thought of that immediately 😂
Mugsy was so tolerant. Even though he was shaved you got him looking and feeling his best.
Oh Mugsy, what a big precious boy. But I flinched when he let you know enough was enough. 😮❤ I love watching your videos. Thank you for loving them like your own.
I'm not sure whether it's just my imagination, but I thought that Mugsy was walking a lot more easily and confidently after shaving - it looked like he was tripping over his fur when he arrived. Well done.
U probably correct. If those gigantic matts are under his 'armpits' and between his legs, I wouldn't be surprised if walking was painful..
Agreed. He looked like he was able walk much more comfortably than before he was shaved.
All them matts had to be effecting his movement as his coat was just about one giant matts... I have natural curly hair and hate getting one... I can not think what it would be like to be fully covered in them hair knots.. He did seam to think even getting shaved off that it was a improvement.
I rescued a discarded Persian at my Apartment complex. Imagine the same matting iss ues. So bad the Vet said it was pulling on his skin, causing pain and movement issues. He was the best boy as he was helped, so calm. Had to shave him down and he got the prettiest sweater (It was in Colorado). A sweet elderly lady adopted him and he had a better life. I hate that some cruel people leave their pets behind at residences, it's wrong and lazy. @@jonathanbair523
I hope this poor boy never has to go through this again. Getting to the point where you snap when you’re a newfie is absolutely insane. He’s such a good boy and I’m so happy he got all his matting off!
What a sweet and patient boy. I feel so bad for him that he was that matted, but I hope the owners will brush him regularly to avoid the mats. He's so very tolerant and I think he'd be down to be brushed every day. After everything he went through, Mugsy deserves a big steak and belly rubs ❤️❤️
Great Job Vanessa! Love your videos ❤️ Neighbor adopted a 2yr old Brown/white Newfoundland was very matted in back area they had to shave him from shoulders down and stayed fluffy around neck and head. She looked like a very beautiful lioness! Very sweet dog 🤗
Mugsy just knew you'd make him feel 2000% better. What a sweet darling boy!
Oh my, I have two newfoundlands and I can only imagine how uncomfortable it must have been for Mugsy with those matts, and also knowing how delicate newf boys are. I hope that his owners are going to keep up with grooming after this shave ❤ You are an awesome person ❤

Mugsy's moans of pleasure when you scratched him were adorable 😊
His color shows up better now that he's shaved. Vanessa should get a medal for the care she gives these dogs.🏆

Poor guy. I hope his owners take better care of him after his groom.
what a sweet and handsome boy - thank you for being so nice to him
I can only imagine how much better Mugsy must have felt getting all that matted coat off. You really are a miracle worker even if the grooms don’t always turn out the way you would like.

do you have any suggestions/tip on daily maintenance/care for such an abnormal coat?
GREAT question, I was wondering that too! I imagine they're gonna have to brush everyday while it grows, right? I'm a psycho and would have boo-bear lay on my lap and brush him every night while we watched shows, would be great for the nerves! (They could braid him all over 🤣)
I would use a technique called line brushing. The more often you can do it the better. At a minumum once a week. Any longer you will risk matting like this in the video.
We just had our 6 year old Newfoundland groomed yesterday. Today he is so sore and can hardly walk from standing for so long 😢. He looks beautiful though ❤️

I’m hopeful it will grow back in. I see no reason why it wouldn’t. Part of owning a Newfoundland is handling the plethora of matted hair/fur issues that arise, regardless of how well or how often they are groomed. Ours have all had to be partially or fully shaved at one time or another and they are well cared for. It happens. All has grown back in. All are AKC registered except for one who was a rescue.
