Really? I thought it looked horrible, and then she explained about it being "wooly" and I understood why the coat looked so poor. It's a shame to working dogs, esp the awesome breed that is the Mal, to breed a dog that can't deal with weather and has that high a maintenance coat. They shouldn't be bred like that any more than Frenchies and Pugs should have those heads. It shouldn't be called a Malamute, either. I had a double-coated malamute mix who LOOOOOOOVED being groomed. He would sit in the grass for an hour or more while I brushed and combed and clipped, and the ground around us looked as if I had sheared several sheep (say that five times fast!). Gentle and sweet and goofy. And in early spring the birds would line their nests with his fur--the most luxurious nests around! Thank you for being such a patient, knowledgeable groomer and for prompting such a sweet memory for me!
@@maryeckel9682 After brushing our aussie, my husband puts tufts of her hair in the trees around our house. We see it in bird nests and it is never ending happiness to see it being used!
My sister had a double coated mixed breed (black lab and ??). She would always brush him and trim his coat in the yard (except in winter). The birds would watch until she finished and went inside, then swoop in to grab all the fur for their nests. They must've all had very comfy nests!

Fellow groomer here. This video was great to watch you made so many valid points. Thank you for letting others know what some of us are afraid to say out loud for fear of backlash. This definitely would have been a groom I wouldn’t have been able to take as I spend 4 hours on a chow chow half Journey’s size 😅.
If I may ask: does this seem to you that the owners are giving Journey's fur the necessary care? I don't have any experience with malamutes, just with a wolf spitz owned by my relatives, who took a hairbrush to his coat almost daily and did a splendid job with that. I really don't want to ask Vanessa such a thing.
@@irena4545 I can only assume that Journey’s owners were trying their best. As we all saw here they were willing to try different groomers until they found one that was willing to save her coat. Vanessa states very often how important doing your breed research is and I couldn’t agree more. I personally believe that they may not have been aware of this Malamute coat type (I was today years old when I heard of a Wooly Malamute, although I am familiar with the breed on a more general basis). Also Journey is clearly a very big dog with LOTS of hair and her being a rescue from a different country all together may have just made for an overwhelming situation in regards to her care (coat care or otherwise). This isn’t the type of dog I would see any groomers choosing to adopt, but Journey was a pet being saved from very difficult conditions and she deserves a good life. I don’t blame or judge her owners for the condition she was in here. I commend them for caring enough to even try so hard to get her properly taken care of. They did great and Vanessa worked a miracle.
@@joycooper5656 I curious if the groom that Journey's had here has made it so that she has a bit of a clean slate with her coat. Do the owners just need to do the daily brushing or does she need specific coat care since she had her double coat shaved. I'm most curious about the type of upkeep needed when you take care of a double coated dog who's been shaved and how that irreversible damage shows itself.
@@pickettle Oh gosh more replies (wasn’t expecting this, I’m flattered you all are asking me questions). I believe during the video Vanessa stated that Journey’s particular coat type isn’t standard so she doesn’t have the regular double coat of say a Malamute that would pull sleds so I can’t quite say what the damage there would be exactly. I can say that for most double coated dogs cutting into the second layer of coat would interfere with temperature regulation (staying warm in the cold and cool in the heat) as well as making the coat more difficult to work with (Vanessa has also said this as well) due to the damage from the clipper blades and the hair growing back coarser, patchy or not at all in some cases. I’ve seen this in Pomeranians quite often with the infamous “Boo Cut”. The best course of action for caring for a coat like Journey’s or a double coat in general is definitely daily brushing and combing, possibly multiple times a day so that by the time the pet goes in for their professional grooming appointment it won’t be quite so taxing for the groomer. With a dog like Journey though a tiring groom is unavoidable based on size alone 😅. I’m sure Vanessa gave the owners some coat care tips (I know I surely do). The owners can literally only try their best, but I’m sure it would take a village and maybe a couple days to brush/comb a coat like Journey’s to a tangle free state from head to tail. I personally would try to make brush days as positive an experience as possible, possibly include toys and treats and maybe include other friends/family that Journey feels safe around to help.
I can tell by the way you work and talk to the dogs and/or other animals, you really love animals and your work. Thanks for sharing your work with these pets, I think you’re awesome!😀🐶👣👏👏

You deserve so much more for what you did for this lucky girl and I have to say she was an absolute doll until it came to her feet. Thank you for having so much patience with the rescues. I’ve been watching you a long time, but first I have donated. I wish I could help more.
Poor Journey was so patient! She didn't seem to fuss or snap until close to the end, when I'm sure she was just as exhausted as you were. The before and after is almost unrecognizable! Amazing work.
I would have to do that in my swim suit.
Dog or human, standing in one place for 4 hours is TOUGH
she really is so well behaved, i have to guess her owners groom her fairly often 😳 ig that goes to show how much damage a shaved double coat can do since she still matted
Well, here's a fluffy fifty for all that trouble you went through. I love your content.

She's really a good girl. That took a long time and she was really well behaved.
I’m gobsmacked! Bless the rescuers, new owners and you for not charging.👍🏼♥️✨
I was not expecting her to be so quiet and patient. She lasted longer than I could've.
I mean, you aren't a dog..
And even so, a treatment like that is easy to tolerate, hell, I'll even enjoy it.
Exactly. I've had dogs get irritated the longer it takes. They'll start the yawning that tells me to be on my toes cause that's when they'll snap at you.
MAN... the rollercoaster she took me on with "the good news is, she's finally brushed out" and then immediately "ON ONE SIDE ANYWAY" was just devastating 🤣😭 prayers and good vibes to your back, sis!
EXACTLY!!!!
Yeah that one got me too 😮😂
That got me too! 😂😂😂😂
I K R!! Whew
prayers for the dog. you could have given the dog a heart attack. What dog can stand for hours, so heavy with all that water. Dogs don't tend to stand that long, so ..... no. That job should have been longer with lots of resting in between for the pure safety of the dog.
Danke!
Tack!
Oh my goodness. 4 hours? What a well behaved dog. God bless you Vanessa for all the work you do. And at no charge? You are a saint ❤

Dog hair is prime nest material, and Malamute is prime prime!
My cousin's corgi was the same way! I'd brush out literal bagfuls of fur and if I stopped, he'd look at me like "No, please, keep going."
She is a very good girl. Truly a gentle giant. Don't think I have ever seen such a calm Malamute.
I was shocked when you said you groom for free! That is WORK, and you are amazing! You're interactions with these diverse dogs are wonderful. I wish you all the best. 🐕❤

What irreversible damage could occur when shaving a double coating?
My wooly husky is the same.
But the character of the dog is quite impressive: Journey got washed, dryblown, brushed,.. for 4hours and never complained, SUCH a good girl!
She is THE BEST
Love the Mals!
I mean... she complained a little. At least when her paws were being groomed. There's a reason she has a muzzle 8:32

Aside from how you treat your clients, the way you speak
about other groomers and don't bring them down says a lot about you as a person and it's pleasing to know that there are still nice people shining their little lights in the darkness.
The fact that you saved her coat says a lot about how skilled you are as a groomer. Also I couldn’t help but smile at the look you gave the camera man when he made that don’t stop believin joke.

I think if I had been in your position, after I finished Journey's one side, I would've started crying, knowing that I still had another side to do. I give you and other groomers so much credit for the hard work you do! 😭👏🏻🤩

My jaw literally dropped at “on one side” 😂
"in desperate need of groomage"

Poor journeys owners need to keep up on her grooming she's beautiful

A win-win. As she said in a comment clients are req’d to make a donation to a rescue org (prob equal to cost of groom.) She’s able to do this due to the success of her videos and I’m guessing growth of GWTD biz incl products and future seminars. She doesn’t have to do what she does for animal charities but does and deserves all her success.

“From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. ‘Get out of here, baldy!’ they said. ‘Get out of here, baldy!’ He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.”

Not only that but mental and emotional as well.....80% of groomer quit their chosen profession after only 5 years. That is older stats....so it's likely higher now.
