Years ago, I had a Samoyed. When I watched TV in the evenings, I would sit on the floor with him and comb (yes, comb) his fur. He loved it, and because I did it several evenings a week, he never had mats. He would lay there and soak up the attention. When I finished one side, I would roll him over for the other side. He was absolutely beautiful and one of the happiest boys I've ever had.

Tried to do the same with my cavalier, but on his blanket on the sofa. Hoped doing a little brushing every day in a chill, cozy setting would make him like it. As soon as the brush comes out he looks like he's about to be beaten, so didn't quite work out 😅

As a groomer who works in a quiet shop and does only one dog at a time, I 100% agree. I wish busier groomers wouldn't resort to suggestions like "shave or sedate" when a simple "I'm not the groomer for you/a quieter environment would be better for him" would be so much more helpful.

Believe me, you would have known with absolutely no doubt if he was snapping it you! If he was giving you a real warning you would have jumped 5 feet away from the fright it gives you!

I am not expert (social scientist, not dog groomer, just dog lover) but my impression is that some groomers have issues with certain breeds, and they tend to displace their own anxiety onto the animal. Of course the animals sense your anxiety, and things can escalate. Any parent understands this process; it’s similar to how toddlers respond. They are SCARED. It is normal for them to respond aggressively when scared. The groomer must be the adult and try to soothe them. Apparently, many can’t be bothered as it is just a production line to them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Yeah that 'growling' was really a kinda grumble groan talk that's like a modified yodel howl that malamutes and huskies do sometimes. The sound emits from higher in the throat with less vibration and you will see the dog is relaxed and the body language is not threatening. It's used for complaining and talking and even throwing a tantrum but is not meant aggressively. At first it can sound similar but she rightly observed the dog's body language and demeanor was friendly the whole time.

@@dollsunitedcovenofkingssec6558 sedation has its dangers. Something could go wrong and end up hurting the dog and the coming out of it isn't great either.
For any being, there's a limit amount of times in a certain span of time where you can be sedated. Sedation is still a form of drug use. Sure it is under medical attention, but it is still using drugs to knock you out.
It should ALWAYS be a last resort thing.
Dogs anxiety is usually due to something that can be resolved and changed, if the owners put in the work and if the groomer is willing to acomodate the pup. That sounds like a better option than just knocking out the dog everytime he needs to be bathed and brushed.

I work as a CNA (Certified Nursing Aide) and videos like this are so interesting to me. Any time you have an animal who comes to you with a negative reputation but they behave very well with you makes me think of the residents I care for who have a reputation with coworkers as being difficult or even verbally aggressive, but are only ever "rude" or even plain nice with me. It doesn't mean the other people deserve the bad behaviors (although some of course do), but sometimes it really just takes a little extra kindness, patience, and compassion to take the edge off. I don't know if that made sense haha, but I think about it every time you post a video like this.

I had the same exact thought. There are other groomers on this platform (won't name who) that would've just skipped straight to shaving Loki rather than be kind and patient, and you can really tell how their attitude affects the pets they groom. Here, you can tell that the groomer puts so much effort into caring for their comfort, provide positive reinforcement, etc that it turns all of the "problem" pets into pets that can be groomed. Loki was obviously on the much more well behaved side, but I can't think of a single case on this channel where a "problem" pet actually lived up to their reputation wholly. Maybe Mayonaisse.

23:23 definitely true! My boy Loki once got some big cuts on his legs that needed stitches. The nurses called me back to help because he was FREAKING OUT. Which is odd cuz he’s normally the most chill dog ever.
I immediately realized that all the fuss is because he wanted the muzzle off. I asked the nurse if I could take the muzzle off and just hold his head, and she reluctantly agreed. He immediately calmed down and let the nurse stitch his paws with no fuss beyond a bit of whining.

As a dog groomer myself I refuse to put muzzles on dogs unless I genuinely believe the dog is going to give me a puncture wound or bite my face because if you think about what putting a muzzle on dog would be like from a human perspective the best example I can give is imagine you went to go see the hairdresser and they pulled on your hair in a way that hurt just a little bit to much for your liking and you told them to knock it off (the dog equivalent being a growl or a light snap towards your hand or the object in your hand), and then immediately after that the hairdresser stopped what they were doing and suddenly grabbed some duck tape and wrapped it around your mouth before going back to what they were doing. You would start stressing and freaking the hell out as well! If I am uncertain of how a dog is going to react or they do bite a little bit to hard for comfort I will where protective gloves and continue the groom. And with the dog biting the gloves I don’t get hurt and the dog (if they aren’t just extremely stubborn or terrified) eventually realises biting isn’t making me go away or stop what I’m doing and will at some point give up and the second they do I give them a break and a lot of extra love to let them know that when they stop biting good things happen like getting off the table quicker which is usually what the dog wants more then anything when their behaving in that manner.

Loki reminds me of my sweet boy, Benjen. He too is a woolly malamute. We also have a non-woolly. I can say you def have to find the right groomer! And having a high velocity dryer at home helps keep their fur in check between grooms. That and brushing several times a week. Brushing often prevents matting and keeps the excess fur from entering your home. That being said….get ready for a ton of fur about twice a year when they blow their coats naturally. Brushing during that time is daily!
