One of the best aspects of the breed is that once you have a relationship with your dog is that they are easy to walk off leash. They like to walk in front of you. We're on our third spaniel and this seems to hold true.

That second leash arrangement uses what I call Dog-Jitsu, in that the front/chest clip uses the dogs own inertia to defeat a lunge/pull forward, by turning the dog.

Awesome video! My springer is lead trained but I dog sit for friends and can no longer have my arms tugged on due to an injury. I look forward to trying the harness you've shown here. Thank you!!!

We used a harness on our first ESS Emma primarily by using a seat belt to keep her off the drivers lap while on a road trip. She could still pull very hard so we used a halter on her nose. On trips through the woods she ran off lead ands had no truble finding us.

This is very good information, I use this too. My dog trainer mentioned “Dogmatic Head Collar” that may be one of other options too.

I have a Ruffwear Webmaster harness for my Springer Spaniel. We do a lot of hillwalking and the handle on top of the harness is great for lifting him over fences.

I also have a Springer Spaniel that I use for hunting. Not only do I have the pulling and following his nose issue but he also wants to be 25 yards in front of me flushing birds and NOT on a leash. I'm going to try this harness. Thanks for the video.

In my childhood my dad bought for his hunting hobby a Wahtelhund dog (Hugo:), looked pretty much like Springer Spaniel. I have many funny stories about him. Hugo was also attracted with all smells: he had no respect to non-family members, so all his dog walkers visited all garbages on their way to the park:D It was really funny to us and big entertainment for the dog:D Regards from Poland.

I had a Springer that would pull very hard on a collar to the point of choking itself, putting them in a normal harness clipped on the back, they completely stopped pulling and was easy to correct if they start. It was weird quirk of that dog and to a lesser extent his brother, it still doesn't make sense to me.

As a pet dog trainer for 40+ years, I can tell you that it is impossible to train most owners to train their dogs. Sad, but true. The option is to have dogs pull their owners to the ground. I will evaluate almost any option that will allow a handler to enjoy walking their dog without endangering the dog or the handler. I applaud you for being great trainers, but believe me, you are in the minority!

  • @simonmealing8760

Try a slip lead every time the dog try's to pull / get in front stop the dog will Learn that it's not getting anywhere and not in control so will start walking to heal
Also as a hunting dog they will walk with there nose to the ground it's one of the thing they will just do
