  • I review Wacom's Cintiq 16 pen display and the Intuos Pro Medium pen tablet, comparing their respective pros and cons. These are both great tablets, and I’ve used Wacom’s Cintiq and Intuos tablets for many years now as an animator and designer. Which one is right for you?

    Thank you!! I was torn on which one to buy. I love my older Intous, but thought perhaps the Cintiq would offer some fun changes and/or upgrades. After tons of research, the point you made about looking up at your computer screen while drawing on the Intous vs looking down at the Cintiq while drawing was the final push I needed towards buying another Intous. When I illustrate on paper my neck begins to bother me while looking down for extended periods of time, add checking your phone regularly and ugh, your posture is constantly being challenged. Thank you again so much for making such a great point!!!

    Great work, great comments and in the end, as a graphic designer I as well can say go for an Intuos Pro. The cintiq is looking nice but its better to use your excellent screens than the blurry one wacom offers, then the thing with looking on the screen downwards cannot be recommended and after a short while working with the intuos pro, wich is cheaper and more durable you will have absolute no problems moving your pen over the tablet and making the changes on the screem happen. I understand we geeks want always the best stuff and cintiq looks good but it does not hold what it promises... take care friends. And Devon Kong, superb what you did. Clear professional and in a manner anyone could watch for hours.

    Honestly , after few years with Intuos Pro Large Paper edition I have developed the strong idea that Cintiq is not an upgrade but an extremely nice device. It means that a 32 inches Cintiq Pro surely capture the attention of any person and express an high level of professionalism but I do not believe it is actually better. I work with a BenQ monitor 32 inches 4K CAD CAM connected to my Intuos PRO using a Workstation Dell very powerful....Well...I love the idea my hand does not cover what I draw and I love even more the fact that my Intuos is not related to my hardware. It means that if I buy a better computer and a better screen (I doubt it at the moment... :D ) ...I can still use my Wacom at the best. In addition with Intuos the posture is not painful and in few weeks you really feel connected with the tablet without any parallax error when you draw...Sometimes I hear that Cintiq is more related with the real drawing experience. My answer is simple. Drawing with Cintiq or Intuos cannot be similar to hand sketch....it is a different workflow and inside this new game Intuos fit better.

      It's true, neither the Cintiq nor Intuos will ever really feel like drawing on paper!

      Very well-said. Digital is just different regardless if you're working with a screened tablet or not. I hope more artists realize this. I've been using a pen display extensively for 4 years now, and I can confidently say that I'll be going back to a large pen tablet for drawing instead. I would even say that pen displays are for beginners, and if you're really serious with digital art, get a big pen tablet as you should be able to work more efficiently with it than a pen display once you've nailed down your hand-to-eye coordination. That's just one of the many things you should get a pen tablet over a pen display, and to be honest, there's really not much of a reason to get a pen display.

  • @stephanvos2681

    Thanks so much!
    I have back and neck problems and really wanted to get a pen display instead of a pen only tablet.
    But all the options to make it ergonomical were a bit bulky for my desk.
    Made me realize I should stick with a pen only tablet as it will be much better for my posture!

    Awesome break down of both products. It's just what I needed because I've been looking to upgrade from my intuos 4. I was thinking about a Cintiq, but I had concerns that it would cause neck and back fatigue. And I was right. I'll be upgrading to the intuos pro.

    This was the review I needed, since I have a Wacom Intuos. I have mine mounted vertically on an articulating arm, which allows me to pull in forward when I use it. That arrangement also gives me the feel of drawing on a paint easel. When I learned about the Cintiq, I was intrigue by the screen, which would give me the feel of drawing and seeing on the same surface. But, from your review, I don’t see a need to switch from the Intuos to the Cintiq. I am comfortable drawing on my Intuos while watching my screen. Again, thank you for this comparison.

    Slight echo. Just happened to see some sound proofing panels on Amazon today - may be worth it? Or hanging heavy curtains on the walls, or even hang shower rod curtain holders to make a little room around where you record, then hang heavy curtains from it, should help.

    I was not expecting to find the information I was looking for in the FIRST video that popped up… about the ergonomics!
    I tried my dads Wacom One and felt the neck pain after just 15 minutes. I guess it’s something you’d get used to, but I don’t want to get used to a bad posture. After 8 years of the intous, it seems like I’m getting another one!

    Thank you, good point with the backpain and the cintiq. The cintiq will surely be much harder on your back and neck than the intuos. Also the intuos can be used easily on a standing desk which will limit the strain on someones neck.
    In the end its a personal choice.
    While the Intuos line is cheaper what people most often forget is the screen, a good proffesional grade screen from Eizo in combination with the Intuos costs around the same as the high level cintiqs and also offer the better screen and color accuracy.

    Note: This is from my personal experience!
    After 1 year of use, my XP Pen Innovator 16 is slowly dying on me - the screen keeps flickering and the cables are shortening. I watched your video and I've decided to by a Intous Pro Medium! Working on a display is nice and you get a second monitor essentially but there some cons. It can be expensive, your back hurts, and they might not last for more than 2 years.

    New subscriber here! I can totally agree with every word of your video. After a trusty screen tablet early this year I changed back to a Wacom Intuos Pro M myself too. I would mention the color calibration of the Cintiq 16/22 vs a great QHD (or maybe 4K) display. An Intuos Pro and a 27" display cost less than buying just for example a Cintiq 22 (not to mention a Cintiq Pro 24). Don't misunderstand me, I like Wacom's display tablets a lot, but I was fed up with drivers, external display settings, the tight table space and the cable spaghetti monster.

    I've bought an Intuos pro small back in 2015 then, in 2020, I bought a pen tablet with screen (gaomon PD2200). Recently I reinstalled the intuos and well, I prefer using it especially because of the wacom quality, over gaomon. So since I wanted to buy a bigger tablet (intuos small isn't very comfortable to use) I was torn between a Intuos pro M and cintiq 16. I think I'll go with the intuos at the end of the day. I need to buy a new monitor so it was also a point to consider, but I think, as I'm gaming too, a separate monitor will be better.

    Ps I've been between the intuos pro large and cintiq 16, currently have the intuos being delivered by 11/4 i want to try using it on my lap and truthfully been wondering if the ExpressKey accessory works with the intuos. I plan to mainly do 3d sculpting / modeling maybe some regular drawing and down the road some animation. Which would you recommend for someone like me ? Intuos pro large or cintiq 16?

    • @devonkong
      @devonkong  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! According to Wacom's website, the ExpressKey Remote isn't compatible with the regular Intuos.
      As for picking between the Cintiq 16 and Intuos Pro, they're both fantastic tablets so it'll come down to personal preference! Personally, I'd pick the Intuos Pro with the Pro Pen 3D for 3D work though 🤫

      @@devonkong Awesome thanks very much for the input, if you decided between the 2021 cintiq pro 16 or the new xp pen artist 16tp pro what do you think you'd go with? They are both 4k, wacom seems to have better software but its 1500 to 900$ is having wacom worth the extra 600? I ordered the intuos pro large and shortly later found out about the artist 22r pro from xp pen so currently have both going to in the least return the artist 22r just too big and heavy to use with my setup. @ElTejocotetl 2 года назад

    A lovely comparison. As I found a intuos pro L paper for 300usd I found tablets as artist 12 gen 2 "restrictive" with its small surface as also many tablets can't compete even with the color accuracy and speed of a modern ips gaming monitor, my MSI for example is 1440p 175hz with a 99% adobe RGB, so I rather put that extra money on a better monitor and for something portable I would use an ipad rather than my phone and a display.

    Hey man! Thanks for the breakdown. A question that I have is if, let's say, you're using the Cintiq 16 which is 1080p in front of a 4k monitor and set it to mirror, does it scale down the full image of the 4k screen into the 1080p of the Cintiq or does it crop a section? Would you advise getting this product if my computer screen is a 4k one, or will I find a lack of detail? Thank you :)

    • @devonkong
      @devonkong  3 года назад +3

      Hello! It scales it down and squeezes it onto the Cintiq screen. I used my Cintiq 16 with a 4k monitor, and I did find that it didn't show some fine details - I couldn't see tiny lines that were obvious on the 4k screen. It was annoying but I could live with it!

    Is the intuos pro tablet is better than the standard intuos at all? I already have a pro pen 2 and express remote so idk if its worth the extra money for the pro

    • @devonkong
      @devonkong  3 года назад +3

      Hey Ninja! The Intuos Pro has much higher pressure sensitivity than the Intuos. 8 times higher I think, but if you have no issues with your current Intuos please don't feel like it's a must have. The Pro also has tilt sensitivity, touch support (which sucks imo), wireless mode (also not great), and more space for your palm to rest on (which I love). The Intuos however is nicer to travel with because it's so small. Hope this helps! Thinking about making a comparison review, would you be interested in seeing that?

    pen displays seem more and more like a gimick these days. there are many advantages to pen tablets. with a pen tablet like an intuos pro you can enjoy any resolution your computer and monitor can pump out; 1080p, 2K, 4K, 8K, whatever. and you only need a usb cable. pen tablets are highly portable, have better ergonomics as you described, are far more durable, and there is no limit to the screen size. you can use an intuous pro with an 80 inch screen if you like. even though pen tablets are thin and do not have VESA mounting holes, it is very easy to mount them to articulating arms simply using velcro because pen tablets are so light

    This vid is really well done, you talk about the two products well and the B, roll that comes with it is really nice, if you wanna improve it a bit though maybe buy a desktop mic and or something interesting for your background, like a computer setup or some LED's that way the background is less straining. Also you have shown that you care about the products, So if you read this or even see it thanks for helping find the right tablet and maybe, just maybe, try and sound a little bit more enthusiastic in the vid.

    Can you use two devices at the same time? Draw on Cintiq while using Intuos Pro to recognize multi-touch gestures?
    Wacom Cintiq Pro is too expensive. If you replace [Cintiq Pro] with [Cintiq + Intuos Pro Small], we can save a lot of money.
    冒昧问一下,您懂中文吗?
    您有没有试过,同时安装两个设备?在 Cintiq 上绘图的同时用 Intuos Pro 识别平移、缩放、旋转这样的手势?
    对于我来说,Cintiq Pro 太贵了,如果用 Cintiq + Intuos Pro Small 近似替代 Cintiq Pro 的话,就可以省下一大笔钱。

    and you broke your shoulders in 1 week because the different position in Up axe between you two hands , one goes to your keyboard one to the tablet. Wacom havent think deeply about it and in production design no one use that screened one especially when you have to draw like 5 hours a day.

    I have both the Cintiq 16 and the Intuos Pro Small...I dicthed the cintiq, it was causing me eye strain and after like an hour of drawing, my back and neck hurt like hell! I also have hyperhidrosis and it was annoying having to clean it so often because of the heat coming from the screen (which is horrible btw, very slippery and blurry).
    It was a long-time dream of mine to be able to buy a screen tablet, but it was just not what I expected. For animators, maybe is a good option, but if you just draw illustrations, the Intuos Pro is more than enough.
