Did I hear you correctly? A $20 deduction in price for not getting the chip for a heated steering wheel? I love how they’ll charge hundreds of dollars for that feature but since they can’t include it, they knock off $20. GM being cheap.
Finally, a ZR2 review. Thanks. While waiting for your review, the gas price went up so much, I am no longer considering this truck. I think BMW X7 might be the next choice.
Got a loaded 2023 Silverado ZR2 a couple months ago, after the lease on my 2020 LTZ was up, and I love this truck. I do want to install either a 4" or 6" BDS lift so I can fit 35's or 37's, but that's about it. I think the stock 33's on this size truck look a bit lost in the wheel wells. Just my opinion. But again, I love this truck.
Nice review, having a front locker is the game changer. So many cool choices for truck enthusiasts. I hope it will be offered in a shorter wheelbase version. Powerwagon vs ZR2 would make a awesome review!
How does the 4auto work? The last GM I had with this was awful. It felt like, for example - taking off from a slick intersection the rear would start spinning and the auto just slammed you into 4hi. It would then almost immediately go back into 2wd and the rear would spin again and then slam back into 4hi, this time for a longer time - enough to get through the intersection. My current Ford with 4auto uses a clutch style center diff and is seamless - it always starts with some lockup and then reverts to 2wd after awhile of steady driving. You can't tell when it is in 2wd or 4wd. It also disengaged on tight turns to stop the drive train from binding. I would like to see the 4 auto operations of these trucks better explained, it seems to always be passively mentioned with no details.
The recent versions of 4Auto with GM trucks utilize Magna transfer cases that use a clutch for the front output. The torque output is variable and depends on road speed, throttle input, and wheel slip. It is effectively and technically full-time 4WD and is the same system used by Jeep in their full-time 4WD vehicles. Totally transparent and seamless when operating, my GMC has it and for a truck it's the best 4WD system out there if you live somewhere that it snows and the roads are patchy. You can set it and forget it. At low speed the torque output is minimal (but not zero) in order to prevent binding during low-speed turns and it will apply more torque the instant it senses wheelspin. No slamming into 4WD, it's very smooth and also very quick to respond.
4auto functions the same as a rear wheel based AWD system. So it's not in 4wd until detects a slip, then it locks the clutch pack so that it behaves like a AWD system.
Love your reviews and was excitied to see you get your hand on this truck. Just a note, I think the "Nerf bars" are true factory option rock sliders that can take the the weight of the vehicle.

I get why everyone compares the ZR2 and Raptor but they really dont compete, not when you consider that the ZR2 is designed for more low speed crawling (front, center and rear locker) and the Raptor is for off road high speed, (rear locker and long travel).
