You are forgetting the most important factor - a new GW CEO. 5 years ago GW almost went bankrupt from a greedy and inept CEO who only cared about selling minis, stopping online sales to force us into GW stores, and suing customers (the idiot even tried to trademark "space marine" lol). After he was ousted/quit, a new guy came in, made radical customer-friendly changes and Warhammer is now more popular and profitable than ever.

It has made 40K alot more accessible to me. Not that I plan to pick up models anytime soon (I don't need to get addicted) but I saw a post of some space marines painted in a color scheme resembling that of the 501st Clone Trooper legion so as a Star Wars geek I might want to pick up a few to paint in the various Clone Trooper legions like the 212th, 327th Star Corps, Coruscant Guard, etc.
This is not to say I'm not interested in the lore. Reading up on Mangus and his Thousand Sons they're like Anakin's tragic fall to darkness except even worse.
Anyway, I'm actually considering picking up Muchkin 40K so that's something I guess.

    • @shadowywarrior
      @shadowywarrior 4 года назад +5

i've looked at warhammer and seen all the work that goes into it and the lore. But frankly i'm not particuarlly interested in actual gaming part of is. Mostly because:
1.) the costs. Several thousands has to be invested into a game where its sort of hard to know before hand how to build armies. or why you build armies. So you're buying up models without any real understanding of why you are buying models. That and the costs of models is never fun to realistically take.
2.) The players. I'm sure alot of players are good at this but teaching new players often felt more like a stomping hunting ground. Where the goal is to murder the new player than it is to actually teach them how to play. I generally enjoy games where i roll dice, but it does get disheartening as a new player to be used as a "punching bag"

I got into 40K when I was about 11 or 12. Had one of those "kiddie boyfriends". The ones you just go to the cinema with, awkwardly hold hands, and just hang out at their house with parental supervision. He used to occasionally play it with his older brother, and his friends. I occasionally played, but, I had no real idea what I was doing, and it was mostly people playing for me, and I often lost. So I spent a large portion of my time reading through the rulebook, and the old 4th/5th edition codexes. Ended up falling in love with the lore and the setting, despite not playing the game whatsoever, and found a love for painting the models. It's very cathartic, and like you say, is wonderful me-time. I've loved it ever since, and I'm glad that such a diverse hobby, with such a broad spectrum of appeal is finally getting recognition for precisely that.

This is not a bad thing because unlike what I expected it makes me very serene, it's so incredibly relaxing and you feel great after painting a model to an extent you're happy with. I spend so much time behind a computerscreen it's honestly amazing to switch it up with painting minis, I highly recommend this hobby if you've been looking into it.

Have you read any of the lore or novels they already read like the edgy stuff 11 and 12 year olds like. Plus when you break down the core gameplay loop of any wargame it turns into essentially pushing plastic army men around and rolling dice to determine if you have killed other plastic army men.
What’s funny is that Warhammer seems to originally been inspired by the whole heavy metal look and feel and decided to make a crazy nonsense universe that ran off heavy metal with healthy doses of satire. However over time and with the novels it seems people have forgotten the satirical nature of this universe so now you got all these “lore whores” getting upset when you mention female space marines. (Watch out of everything I say in this post only this will be get a response.)
Back to my original point a grim dark children’s novel doesn’t sound like it should go together but the sheer absurdity of it makes it seem like a step back to the roots of this franchise. Mainly a universe that doesn’t take itself too seriously because it knows how nonsensical it is. Also a lot of kids already play Warhammer with their parents, friends, siblings, and mentors/teachers.
I am not saying your opinion is wrong or that mine is right just wanted to show you how it all looks to me so maybe you won’t be entirely dismissive of something in the future. Iunno I just think the children’s novels could be the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tv show for the comic and that could be a good thing for this hobby reaching a younger audience might allow for more companies to see their is a target demographic here and make some legit wargames for all ages. Let’s face it kids get shit tabletop games like Candy Land and Monopoly we need more Gaslands and Frostgraves, Life is pretty good it at least has interesting meta stories.

      Salamanders, Lamenters, T'au ...
On the other hand, homebrew is a very flexible option, and there's a vast amount of room for one to make their very own good guy faction in their own style - it may not be as powerful or significant as the Ultramarines or the Tyranid hive fleets, but you can always be a force for good in your own little pocket of the galaxy.

For me it's the lore of both Fantasy and 40k. The worldbuilding, the tone, the factions, and the stories by the many great authors. The world building is vast. The gods in Fantasy, the various internal politics in 40k, it's all so deliciously Machiavellian. It's almost like George R.R. Martin wrote a more high fantasy series. The tone is also to die for. It's simple. Humanity's fucked. Fantasy? Demon worshippers within and without, orks rampaging constatnly, undeath reigns in the southlands, beneath every human settlement there are colonies of evil ratmen, and the nobles are constantly conspiring against each other. In 40k? In addition to the Nids, Chaos, Necrons, and Orks, it's the fact that eventually humanity will fail and the desperate measures taken to ensure the survival of mankind. A few loons worhispping a Chaos God? Planet will probably be nuked to death and the thing is those billions of dead people will probably be nothing compared to the trillions if those idiots worshiping Khorne/Tzeentch/Nurgle/Slaanesh/****l/Chaos Undivided aren't killed. Not to mention the Golden Throne is failing, and when it fails, and it will, humanity will be plunged into a dark ages not seen for over 10,000 years, as supply lines break down, xenos and traitors rampage freely, and even more trillions starve. It's also the fantastic writing by various skilled authors. The Vampire Wars series, Gotrek and Felix, A Thousand Sons, Legion, First Heretic, Betrayer, great books on their own but in an expanded universe? They are beauties.

Promotion of the recycling of the waste components of their product in the way MM suggested here, would indeed do that. @zephyrstrife4668 3 года назад

I totally agree about having the terrain pieces be made from recycled sprues. It'd be a great way to make less waste and give people more incentive to purchase more kits because then you not only have the sprues to jury-rig into terrain or base decorations, but getting terrain pieces that you can just... paint up however you wish if you want to make a factory or space ship scenario is wonderful!

I got into warhammer through the video games mostly when i was 16 years old.
After playing dawn of war 2 and reading up on the different kinds of lore behind the wargear you could earn, i started searching for more lore on the subject.
afterwards i came across Alfabusa's Emperor's text to speech series and that got me hooked on the actual lore.
now i am 21 years old and have begun painting the mini's. my first ones were 3 primaris marines (the easy to build ones) just to see if i liked painting.
turned out i had some skill. and have now begun painting an imperial coalition. I am mixing up astartes with imperial guard units as a emergency faction of remnants from the fall of cadia. right now i painted a chimera, leman russ demolisher, 3 marines, sergeant harker (gonna go with my own paintscheme) and have now started assembling and painting an armiger warglaive.
honestly, i never thought i would get into miniature painting but here we are.

Only thing i have to say is that the 3d printing is bit more consumer friendly than you said, it DOESEN'T smell or anything, if you use right printing material. The printer usually comes with simple program, then you just download a model and print it. But if you want to make your 3d model, thats yet on another level, because you need to learn the entirity of 3d modelling(its not that hard), personnaly i'd use blender/3ds max, rather than programs like Inventor for that matter, because you can do details more easily. Also great vid! XD

I got into Warhammer when, for my 12th birthday, my Dad bought me a model rocket...
And then my Mum found out, refused to let the two of us mess with explosives unsupervised, and so back to the hobby shop we went. I picked out the old 2nd ed start painting box - little pots of paint and five of the old mono-pose Space Marines - and then a few months later the launch of 3rd edition. I still have a few Dark Eldar bits knocking around in my bitz box.

I first got into Warhammer when I kept seeing FOR THE EMPEROR! comments or DIE HERETIC! I got curious and searched up these terms and I just got sucked into the lore. Out of all the sci-fi books and franchises I've read, played and seen, Warhammer has the most diverse and exotic lore out of all of them.
I spent countless hours reading the lore which is impressive because I haven't read anything that vigorously since.... well since ever!
I first got Intrested in the Warhammer tabletop game when, surprisingly, my Art teacher mentioned it during class. He brought along one of his space marines (a blood Angel if i remember correctly)
He showed it to anyone interested, which was sadly only me, and the next day he brought in a couple more blood angels and even some orks.
It was bizarre seeing these things which (to me) had only existed in the confines of my mind as I read through the lore, come to life as these minifigures on the table.
My entire interest in the Tabletop side of Warhammer is due to this one moment and that one art teacher.

I first got into Warhammer when my father and I were just walking through a mall and happened upon a Gamesworkshop store and saw the models on display as well some people playing. We bought the Battle for Macragge starter set and from there I was pretty much hooked. I was never the best, but you get better with time and you eventually end up changing armies as time passes on. I started with Spaces Marines only to move to Imperial Guard, then Tyranids, Tau, and now Eldar. I still keep the first brown and green marine I made from that starter set to see how far I've come since then and the people I got to meet thanks to the game. Sometimes the game itself is just a backdrop to hang out with friends, which is probably the best part about it the game that isn't explicitly in the game.

I think the best aspect of Warhammer is how social it is. You NEED other people to play with, and it's driven so many people I know who are super nerdy to break out of their shell and meet people with similar interests. I think many video games are much more socially isolating.
