Most backing crashes occur because drivers move the vehicle before looking.
It is important that you look before moving the vehicle, and look and observe the entire time that you are backing.
As well, back slowly-no more than a walking pace-for several reasons:
First, the vehicle turns sharper the slower you travel.
Second, travelling slowly gives you time to observe.
Third, going slowing gives you more time to react.
And finally, if you do hit something, a slow moving vehicle will do less damage than one travelling faster.
If you are having difficulty reversing go to an empty parking lot or other area where there isn't any traffic and set up some cones.
Practice reversing in a straight line first, and then practice reversing around a corner.
And after you're comfortable with those manoeuvres, practice reversing into a stall park.

I wish they'd tought reverse perpendicular parking in Massachusetts. I did teach myself how to do it after I got my license. And my first car at the time did not have a backup camera but it was small SUV it was easy to tell where the back end was.
I am at a loss for words for how thankful I am to have found your channel. I've been watching and studying your videos for the last two weeks and learned enough to feel safe, confident and in control behind the wheel of my first car. In fact I actually just passed my driver's license test this morning, went straight for it without ever having a permit or anything, because I learned how to practice effectively from your videos. I couldn't have done it without you. I just wanted you to know you're really doing a great public service and you're easy to understand videos are truly helping make the road a safer place.

hey i just want to say that the to-the-point repetition of information has been really effective in teaching me these things that my adhd brain finds "boring". most often teachers just heavily emphasize important information One time, and expect you to retain it as they continue on with more information. repetition in practice > slow heavy emphasis.

@@smartdrivetest Hi Rick, thank you for taking the time to reply. Actually since you mentioned it, I think it would be helpful if you could make a short video on why it's important to choose the right lane when you're driving on the freeway. I live in CA and I travel to Los Angeles quite often because of my job. Traffic is bad and it's worse when you have a driver that's driving slow on the left lane which should be moving a bit faster. People start getting frustrated, tailgating, and having to swerve in and out between the left lane and the middle lane to pass the slow driver. Hope you consider it. Thank you!

When you do the 3 point turn and you are reversing do you also look in the rear window the entire time or do you use your rear and side mirrors?
Hi Amber H - Thank you for your query. I answered your question below. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
That was good but watch out while scanning in the middle of the intersection my comment on that is before entering into the intersection scan the area and after that when there was no one on the road just drive and reach on the other side of the road not to block it and not to put urself in danger
I take my test at 12pm. I'm extremely nervous. I did parent-taught driver's ed and we only worked on parallel parking/backing today. I'm not good at going straight back, whether it's from nerves or whatever, I just have so much trouble with it!! I am definitely the most nervous for the backing, I just hope I'll be able to pass.
Good luck on your test today. Remember to breathe. That will cause your body to relax. Drop back and let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Rick. Question for you. At what point do you straighten out your steering wheel? Is it when you are almost finished backing up or when you are stopped and switching from reverse to drive?
Hi Emily Stewardson - Thank you for your comment and query. Straighten when you're almost finished backing up to avoid "dry steering." Dry steering is when you turn the steering wheels when you're stopped. It was more of a problem in the ole' days of lesser quality tires, but now with better tires, it's not so much of a problem. But it's easier on all the steering components too if you straighten the wheels when it's moving. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hell I’m still using mine just check your mirrors too. I don’t really use mine except for when I want to make sure nothing is behind me (no blind spots with mine) while I’m backing up.
Anyone in Hagerstown md know at the mva are they allowed to take one hand off the wheel like this for the 2 point reverse turn or do u have to keep both hands on the wheel
I’m still working on my behind the wheel lesson. I get ready stressed out when reversing. I don’t know where to Turn my steer when I want make turn left or right. I hope you can understand my question Rick
Hi Be Natural - Thank you for your comment and query. Put your hand on the top of the steering wheel. The way you push the steering wheel is the way the back of the car is going to turn. Lots of info
Well said Rick and I said before to you NJ allows the usage of backup cameras and parking sensors if the road test was taken on or after August 31st 2016. For some driving school they even offer road test service do they actually do it or not as part of their road test service.
Hi EpicThe112 - Thank you for your comment. I mentioned that briefly in the introduction, but still good information for those there in the Garden State. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest thanks Rick and for a driving school road test service does it mean that they do a mock road test before the actual one because it's sometimes Vague on the description on their websites.

😵💫😵💫😵💫 my driver's test is on Monday, my question is: parking Uphill, is it considered a small curb to park and turn all the wheel to the left? I practiced all the wheel to the right but cars in front were the opposite.
If you live in New Jersey take your test in the Air Miller Park. As long as you can park parallel everything else is nothing. Just don’t go past 30 mph
I get so confused when reserving because it’s reverse form right to left is there any excerise to remember
Hi FreshNess - Thank you for your comment and query. Put your hand on the top of the steering wheel my friend, and the way you push the steering wheel is the way the back of the car is going to turn. yo I know this is a year old but what helps me remember is to picture the arc of the vehicle when you turn left imagine where it would move on the same arc but backwards
I remember when I took my driving test in florida for my liscense. I only had to do the 3 point turn, every thing else they didnt test me on.
Omg rly I’m from Florida and I have to take my test Monday and I can’t back up for my lifeeee
@@nolahood3680 you'll do great, just breathe and relax, dont let the nerves get to you.
Some tips for backing up during the test, after you put the car in reverse but before you start moving, you're going to want to place your right hand on the passenger seat and turn to look out the back window. You dont need to press the gas at this point for the test, just keep your foot near the break and let the car back its self up until the instructor tells you to stop
The whole time you back up make sure you're looking out of the rear window! I took my test back in 2009 before cars had backup cameras so you HAD to look out of the rear window and I think they still test that way, so dont loose points because of using the back up cam! Practice looking out of the back window now so it's not a surprise during the test if you've only been using the camera.
And as for turning when backing up, I've always heard all types of confusing things about how you turn your arms Opposite of where you want to go, FORGET ALL OF THAT. once you're in reverse and looking behind you just turn the wheel in the direction you want to go. If you're backing up and want to go left turn the wheel left, if you want to go right turn it right 🤗
Good luck on your test! You'll do amazing I'm sure!

Do you have to stop after 1 vehicle length, do a 360 degree vehicle scan, and continue backing during the road test? Or there's no stopping and have to continue backing and looking around on a road test? I live in California.
Hi Nothing to see here - have a look at this vid my friend: ruclips.net/video/AL3k_KFaHfA/видео.html And you don't have to stop every vehicle length, but pause and look out the front to ensure the car is still straight, do a 360° scan, and then resume. 👍 thanks praying hi will pass my test,i am so nervous, good job, thanks
So Am I able to have one hand on the steering wheel and one hand behind the passenger seat for backing up and parallel parking for a road test?
Yes you are my friend. See this vid for parallel parking: ruclips.net/video/U0uAFVeDUjs/видео.html Drop us a note if you have further questions, or we can help out. All the best, Cheers Rick
Do you need to back up in the technique of turning your head around or can you just look at the mirrors?
Apologies for the late response. If you're going for a driver's test, you have to look through the rear window. Cheers Rick
In Maryland they say you got to keep your hands on the wheel both hands on the wheel
Who’s “they” my friend? Cheers Rick
HINT: ALWAYS - "Before" actually backing up, give your horn a short tap
to beep the horn to let those know surrounding your vehicle that your
now going to back up...the horn alerts others nearby rather than
silently just backing up.
That is a required technique for commercial licenses - truck and buses. My only concern in a parking lot would be scaring pedestrians and children. Otherwise, yes. All the best, Cheers Rick
Looking is also for little children not just cars.
But I listening .I just get messed up turning backwards.
But I get better at it.😂😂
Will a G(Canada Ontario) also cover these and more?
Hi Chris Keddy - Thank you for your comment and query. These techniques apply for Ontario and the rest of North America my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest I might not have been clear. In Ontario there are 3 tests G1(written), G2(driving), G(driving). I was wondering if both driving tests cover the same material.

Hi, so my dads car has really heavy steering. For the road test, is it okay when I am turning the wheel a lot to take the hand off of the back of the seat for a second while I turn the wheel?
Hi Presto Car Talk and Reviews. - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your question. You can do that my friend. Parallel parking is no longer a requirement so they won't be doing that in the driving exam anymore. At least not in my city in Florida. It's mainly parking in and out of spaces, reversing and 3 point turns.
Hi Esmeralda Gems - that must be a specific requirement to your test centre my friend. The only 2 states that I know of that have a different requirement are MD and CA. @@smartdrivetest Hi. Thanks for responding. :) I wasn't meaning they quit doing it everywhere, everywhere, but at least I don't have to worry as much about it in my city.

In NY the road test didn’t allow you to twist your torso; you have to reverse by using the mirrors. NY actual does r teach you reversing. I may be wrong bc I never took a class but I never heard of it and we have a lot of crappy drivers that can’t park or drive forward much less reverse 🤣
Hi kennethsTutorials - Thank you for your comment. There isn't anywhere that I know that is different that this procedure for reversing. Who told you that my friend? All the best, Cheers Rick

What if you have to do 50ft reverse driving on the FL test without a curb? I can’t seem to keep the vehicle straight and I failed on it because of it.
Does your car have a backup camera? Let me know and we'll help you out my friend. Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test No. The newest car we own is a 05 Toyota Camry!
Alright - this is the video you want my friend: ruclips.net/video/9NRbMTST6-8/видео.html For backing without a backup camera, you're going to have to use the mirrors a bit. Also, as your backing stop approximately every vehicle length and look out the front to see if the vehicle is straight. Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test on the FL driving test, you are not allowed to use any mirrors during the 50ft reverse driving. You strictly have to look behind you by turning your head, but I cannot seem to keep the vehicle straight.
You can use the mirrors, you just can't use them as your main point of observation. So every vehicle length or so, have a quick look in the mirror and make sure that you straight. Also, put a piece of tape at the top of the steering wheel so you know the tires are straight. Also, when you start, be sure that you're about 3' from the edge; that way you'll have some wiggle room to adjust as you're going backward. Cheers Rick
This might be a dumb question but will the examiner fail you if u don’t stop every car length to do a 360 scan while reversing?
It's unlikely that you'll have to reverse more than 1 car length, unless you're doing your test in California or Oregon. But you should slow or pause and do a 360° scan, because the traffic situation can change in a short space of time. If you don't do it, they probably won't fail you, just assign a couple of demerits. Would it be okay if a person keeps both hands on the wheel while reversing from a parking spot?
Hi Meganmooo_ - Thank you for your comment and query. If you have both hands on the steering wheel, it is nigh impossible for you to look out the rear window and observe correctly while reversing. Yo guys I took the test and I got points deducted for scanning, I know it sounds dumb but in some states like Florida when you're doing the reverse test all you do is go back looking out your back window. Don't stop and 360 scan, make sure you look up the rules in your state.
Hi iSplash3s - did you pass your test? And you didn't get points off for scanning in your state, you got points off because the examiner doesn't know how to reverse safely. Examiners have discretion about what they do and don't give points for my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest yes I passed, she said I did great but the 360 scan wasn't what they were looking for when reversing 50 ft. She said that in Florida road test all you do is reverse like you did but without the 360 scan. I know it's weird.
