Most of a passenger vehicle road test is in a forward motion - approximately 7/8th of the test is in a forward motion, however, the 1/8 that is slow-speed manoeuvres gives new drivers the most challenge.
For the purpose of a road test, drivers are required to know how to do a 3 point turn. The step-by-step directions for a 3 point turn can be found here:

Most of the time, a driving examiner will take you a dead end street, or a thoroughfare with minimal traffic to complete this manoeuvre. As well, the street will be narrow and will preclude you from doing a ‘U’ turn.
It is important to go slow for this manoeuvre - no or little throttle is required. Often a driver will be required to apply the brake to control the speed of the vehicle.
Other key components of the 3 point turn are observation and communication. In other words, you must not move the vehicle until the way is clear in both directions, and you communicate to other traffic what you are doing on the roadway.
STEP-BY-STEP Instructions for 3 Point Turn
You are stopped at the right side of the road
• Select Drive
• Check the left mirror, signal to the left and check over the left shoulder
• Release the brake, don't give the vehicle any gas and steer all the way rapidly to the left
• As you go over the centre line begin to straighten out the wheels
• Stop near the curb
• Select reverse and activate your right signal
• Do a safety scan, check for traffic and look over your right shoulder - release the brake when the way is clear and steer rapidly to the right
• When your reach the centre of the road, look over your left shoulder, straighten out the wheel and stop the vehicle near the curb (you are looking over your left shoulder because the rear left tire is the first to the curb - the rear tires are just behind the back seat)
• Select drive, signal left, do a safety scan (left, centre, right) to ensure it is clear to pull out and drive away
- Look into your intended path
- Accelerate
- Steer the vehicle

I honestly never heard of using turn signals on a three point turn never ever and it was the reason why I failed my drivers test but now I watch this video and it makes a word of a difference thank you

@@smartdrivetest but my drive instructor told me just put left signal , no other signals, I’m confused, I will take my G2 road test tomorrow.
they are only required twice. Once to the right and once to the left.
I guess different instructors teach this differently. I never learned to straighten out the wheel at the midline, either going forward of going back - and if you look at other vids online, its often taught without that. So, first turning the wheel all the way to the left, driving forward, reaching the opposite side (you'll reach it at an angle), then turning the wheel all the way to the right and reversing, which leaves you faced in the proper new direction. Your method obviously works, too but it does involve extra steps. Your vids are the best at reminding to always do shoulder checks and mirror checks.

i took my test last week and i finally pass for the 4th try. this is way easier for me than back parking..when the examiner said i passed i really did burst in tears, funny but true.who among you cried when they pass the test, i hope its not just me 😬?

I passed on My First Try but that's because My Dad taught me how to Drive since I was a little Kid. I did the same for My Son.

I m now trying for B & E driving licence. Free training going on. Do you know any online website which has multiple choice questions and helps in preparing for this test.
Hi claudees - you're in Ontario, correct? For a few dollars you can take the multiple choice questions on my site - all the questions provide feedback. If you're looking for an air brake course, I have one of those too. For the Class B licence, you'll need the air brakes. Not too many school buses these days with juice brakes. About the road markings, can you only do the three point turn in broken white lines?

easy baby, relax, do not forget you have others chance to give you road test. also can make a little ; breath and listen relax music and imagine that you are so relax doing it. many times, and it will go and you will be good.

My test included 3 point turn, parallel parking, uphill with curve parking, and many (many!) left turns. I'm absolutely certain that I passed because of you.

Thanks for the lesson. Had a little trouble a while back (5yrs ago) that eliminated my first beginner permit. The problem has since been eliminated however I had to take written again, soon looking to take driven this coming week.

I was so happy to discover your channel the weekend before I took my road test (which was April 24th)! I watch faithfully on the videos you made that I knew I was weak in and took notes. Thankfully, I PASSED my road test. Aside from having a mean examiner, I remember what I learned from my driving school and your videos and stood focus, I was able to succeed in passing the exam. Hi Nadeen Robinson- thank you for your comment. I would counsel you to find another vehicle to get some practice - whatever you have to do. It is unlikely that you are going to be successful on a road test from five driving lessons. In my experience it simply isn't enough. There are always seniors that need rides that might be willing to help you get some further driving experience. Even if you can drive a car around in a parking lot or some other closed area - anything to get a bit more practice. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Thank you so much for your amazing videos! They are very helpful for preparing for a road test and learning how to drive! I have a question though. For a road test, what happens if during the middle of the three-point turn, there is a vehicle coming down the road. Do we have to stop and expect the vehicle to manuever around us (causing them to go on the wrong side of the road), or do we quickly complete the turn as the vehicle would be farther down the road. Thanks!

I really need to get my license. I couldn't parallel park and didn't even make it out of the parking lot.failed the test. I've been watching Ricks videos for a bout a week. And it makes me want to drive.

Smart Drive Test I took and passed my test today in Carlisle Pennsylvania USA. I watched your videos for like hour today and practiced beforehand with what you taught us. I was in a really bad car accident so I was shaking so bad when I first started but I used the breathing techniques and everything I learned from you. it's been 8yrs since I had a license and I always cancel my test the day before because I was nervous and already failed twice due to my anxiety, your videos have me the confidence to try and succeed today. Smart Drive Test . I'm in Huntsville Alabama. Watching your videos makes me confidence to do it and understand the concept. I'm still watching your other videos because I know I need more knowledge how to do driving properly. Thanks a million. My daughter will have her road test this August. I will definitely let watch your videos. Sorry I'm an older driver. I came from a country that driving is scary because of people everywhere. Hitting people with my vehicle is probably the worst one I can think of. But you always emphasize to always look. It helped me a lot!

Thank you so much for these videos, my driver's test is on the 27th of December, so these will really help. I'm 20 and I turn 21 on the 30th of December so if I pass that will be my present. Not sure if I'm gonna have to come right back after the test to get my actual license when I turn 21.

Hi there, here in Ontario my instructor never taught me to straighten the wheels during the 3 point turn. Just turn the wheel all the way to the left, go forward to curb, turn wheel all the way to the right, reverse to other curb, then steer all the way to the left and accelerate away.

As a parent teaching their child your videos are so valuable. Thank you. I do have a question about a 3 point turn in winter after a significant snowfall that has narrowed the road considerably. What if the road is now too narrow to make a 3 point turn because your car is too long or due to poor snow clean up the road is now too narrow unless you use someones driveway or are driving a car the length of a smart car? Is it ever ok to make a 5 point turn, following the same procedures, during your test, under those conditions? Should the student let the examiner know that they are doing a 5 point turn because they are too long to make the 3 point turn without using a driveway? Thanks for your input

I will take a driver's license soon MA. I am from Japan where you have a right steering wheels with car and keep on the left in driving.
