    On most of the road tests in the world, you will be required to reverse stall park - back into a parking space. If there is designated parking at the licensing centre, you will back into the space at the beginning of your licence exam in preparation for the test. This manoeuvre will give you some practice and help to ease your tension somewhat. When your return from your drive, you again will reverse into the space.
    By backing into the parking stall before commencing your road test, you can simply drive out to begin your test. At the end of the road test when you've got control of your jitters and developed a rapport with the driving examiner, you--most of the time--will be required to back into the parking space at the licensing centre.
    Set up is the most important part for backing into a parking space. And before practicing perpendicular, bay, or stall parking, practice backing up. Hire some 36" (1m) pylons from the local shop and go to an empty parking lot. There. practice straight line backing, backing around corners and reverse Figure "8s". When you are comfortable with all of that, then begin practicing reverse stall parks. As well, the practice of slow-speed manoeuvres will translate into your overall driving.
    When reversing into a stall work to keep your vision up; do not look down at the lines. If you’er obsessed with looking at the lines, parking will be incrementally more difficult because your vision and focus are in the wrong place. If at all possible, try to park off another vehicle - that is the easiest. Keep in mind that hazard and obstacles and landmarks are one-and-the-same! When you pull up in preparation to park take note of the landmarks around your vehicle and use these as reference points to park your vehicle.
    When you drive into a parking bay, or set up for straight-line, or angle backing position the vehicle so you--the driver--are at the ½ way point of the parking space immediately proceeding the space into which you wish to park. At that juncture, turn the wheel and either drive into the space, or position the vehicle so that you can back into the space.
    For reverse perpendicular parking, position the vehicle approximately 3’ from the other parked vehicles and drive so you-the driver-are at the mid-point of the 2nd space past the space into which you wish to park. Put the vehicle into reverse and activate your turn signal. Conduct a 360° scan before starting reverse motion. Turn the steering wheel all the way in the direction of the parking space and begin backing. When the vehicle is almost straight in the space, look forward out the front windshield to determine of the vehicle is straight and turn the steering wheel back 1 ½ turns so the wheels are straight. Continue to reverse until the front of the vehicle off which you are parking lines up with the front of your vehicle.
    Good luck on your road test!!

    See, I like watching your videos and love learning this way. I tried just reading the book in order to get your permit and all i could think is "Uhhh.. What??.." You explain things so well, in detail, and then demonstrate. And it helps SOOO much. I really appreciate how you break things down so everything isn't overwhelming all at once and I feel like speed just takes time. That at first, you talk about how to do it, one thing at a time, one section of information at a time, and then you take action. Then you prob just faster and more confident as you go along. I'm 22 years old and don't even have my permit because 1) I'm nervous AF. 2) I really don't have anyone to show me how to drive and I never really have and 3) It's all confusing for me and then it ties into #2. I wish I could just learn all this information all at once and be a good enough driver so I can get my license so I'm not embarrased and can travel when I want to, but at the same time, it's all so confusing and I don't know where to begin. I don't know what to do and watching you, has really helped. You make it all easier and I just have to take one step at a time.

    At first big thank for your great lessons about driving, all of these are extremly useful and the best of all other channels on the youtube.
    I found two two pieces which I are not fully clear for me:
    1. Perpendicular forward parking: as per theory part and other videos the turning point is when mirror is aligned with ~ the middle of the preceeding car. In the practice it was shown (maybe camera angle is misleading?) as if it is at one full stall/bay earlier (parking next to the pickup, aligning with the center of sedan before the pickup). Well you use your body and not the left mirror as reference point so I assume this is from where the difference comes from. I would recommend if possible to create video/photo from the drivers eye point of view when talking about reference points, it would make much clearer some situations.
    2. Perpendicular reverse parking: as per practice part and other videos the turning point is when back of the vehicle is aligned with the further end of the preceeding stall/bay before the target (distance between target bay and back of the car is one bay). In the theory part at 12:00 this point is one stall earlier than I would expect (back of the car drawn at the nearer edge of the next bay instead of the further). Is it due to how close you pull up to the spaces or just because there wasn't enough space on the board to draw?

      Hi Péter Krasznai - thank you for your comment and compliment. Apologies for the late response. And thank you for the detailed information. Answer to question - nope - you don't want to be too far away, otherwise other vehicles are going to sneak in around you. You want to be close, but not too close, and you don't want to be too far away. It's a defensive posturing. Yes, it is difficult to get a good perspective when watching a video. I always encourage smart drivers to practice - especially this manoeuvre becasue you can be certain it will be on a road test. Do you signal per where you are going? But then people might think you're not taking that spot? Which method is ideal (90 or 45) for testing purposes in Ontario?

    The question is Rick is it okay to use an unoccupied space to correct the maneuver my first attempt was that I end up aligning aligning my passenger side down the line this was using my parents 2019 Mazda CX-5 suv at my local Walmart at. my second attempt was that I was exactly on the spot but looking outside crooked can I still redo the my reverse still maneuver parking in that situation.
    Very Helpful tip on stall parking.

    Hi, I take my test this Saturday and I am still having a hard time reverse parking. On the test, is it ok if I "stop" while parking to check my mirrors or do I have to keep going into the parking space without stopping to look at the mirrors/adjust? Also, do I have to actually get up to look back and out the back window or can I solely use the mirrors?

    just want to say that i have a driving assessment for disabled drivers on the 13th of July 2017 . I have a full UK licence , but disabled drivers have to inform the DVLA of their intention to return to driving . If we don't we could be prosecuted if we are involved in a RTA . We can also be fined up to £1,000 . Your style of teaching is very good , and you cover everything about each manoeuvre . I will be using a vehicle with hand controls and I'm wondering if you have any videos that cover reverse parking , both on the road and in a car park . Thanks for all your hard work , and keep those videos coming . Michael . UK Driver .

    Fortunately, reverse stall parking isn't required in either NY or PA USA for a road test. However it was, in practice in any case, in the Netherlands. I'm awful at it. I always get in, & I've never scratched another car, but I frequently get out thinking that the car is straight only to find out it's definitely angled. I like the advice about the convex mirrors. But again, as in parellel parking, corrections aren't difficult. Sometimes I'd get out of the car & think, 'oh no, that's going to make life difficult for my neighbor' and correct the car. Sometimes I'd get out & think, this isn't going to bother anybody & leave it be. In NY, it's not part of the road test. In the Netherlands it is. In PA you need to pull front-ways into a space, which is the end of the parking exam & the only time you are required to pull up the parking break. Driving is driving, but the tests are shockingly different!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад

      Hi Denya Cascio - Thank you for your comment. It takes time to get good at reverse stall parking. Even as much as I've been driving, I still get out of the vehicle to find it crooked or too far from the back line. The level of difficulty is why many drivers simply pull into the space. And stall parking is a requirement in every state. It may have been your experience that it wasn't required, but for almost all road tests, parallel, reverse stall parking, and curb parking are more or less standard. Keep in mind that the manoeuvres required are up to the discretion of the examiner. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +7

      Hi Moises Chauca - Thank you for your comment. And yes, you have to look out the back window every time you back up. The number one reason for backing crashes is because drivers don't look before putting the vehicle into a reverse motion. Have a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/4ENiPyYKbKQ/видео.html Be sure to leave your seatbelt on for the duration of the - contrary to what I say in the video. I tried the third method, the reverse perpendicular stall park with my 2001 Chrysler Intrepid, which is large (5.2 m long x 1.9 m wide), and I had to start with my eyes at the far edge of the second stall past my target stall, (instead of the middle as you recommended), and I had to very gradually turn (instead of the full turn you recommended). That way, it was much easier to guage my angle, so I could guide my car back and get straight enough to enter the target stall without hitting any adjacent lines. The middle of the second stall never worked, because it was too close.

    • @EarendilTheMariner
      @EarendilTheMariner 5 лет назад

      Note that my Intrepid's turning circle is 37.6 feet (11.5 metres), and the steering wheel goes 1.5 revolutions from the centre, to turn it all the way.

    • @EarendilTheMariner
      @EarendilTheMariner 5 лет назад +1

      By the way, if you dry steer your steering wheel all the way left or right, doesn't it put a lot of stress on the front CV axle assembly and rack and pinions?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Lars Miranda - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment. And as you rightly point out, there is a some adjustment to the reference points depending on the size and steering radius of the vehicle. And yes, if you can avoid dry steering, it is easier on the components of the vehicle. In some instances, it's not possible NOT to dry steer, but if it can be avoided - longer life to the vehicle. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hi , your videos are really helpful . Couple of doubts -

    2) Is it ok if hands cross while turning the steering ?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +1

      Hi 9w829 - Thank you for your comment. And any time your move the vehicle laterally you have to signal. So which ever direction you are backing into the space you have to signal to tell other traffic what you're doing. When reversing, it is the one time you may have to use one hand to steer. See this video for reversing, but do NOT remove your seatbelt for the duration of the test: ruclips.net/video/4ENiPyYKbKQ/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Smart Drive Test parking just at an 45 degree angle is what I mean. I failed my exam today and was asked to learn angle parking and exiting better . I exited bay from the wrong side. So how do we know which side do we exit from? Also I do not know if stall or angle parking are same, you tell me please.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад +1

      Hi aditi sharma - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. I'm not sure what the examiner meant by leaving the stall the wrong way, unless s/he gave you instructions and you turned the wrong way?!? Also, stall parking is what I went over in the video; angle parking is a stall park, but it's on a bit of an angle as opposed to 90° and straight. All the best, Cheers Rick PS - you'll have a different examiner on the next attempt.

    ( so moving the steering wheel with one hand the whole time your reverse parking is fine?)
    Also if it a fail if you do use both hands on wheel while reverse parking

      Hi cedric - Thank you for your comment. The exercises in these two videos will help: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/w3Dc8k1jOq8/видео.html When you've done the forward and reverse figure '8s' and the 2X4 exercise, you will be ready for the other slow-speed manoeuvres. But work on these fundamentals first. When you're feeling more comfortable drop us a note, and I'll send you the other videos. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hey Rick! Thanks for all the knowledge. I have my test this Tuesday in BC and was wondering if you could clarify something. When reverse parking, I take my seat belt off and put my right hand behind the passenger seat to make the view easier. Is this illegal?

    • @smartdrivetest

      Hi Tessa K - Thank you for your comment and query. And you will need to look primarily over the shoulder in the direction which you're turning; however, ensure that you're looking all around the vehicle. For the purposes of a road test do instructors (US and Canada) expect you to also do Parallel Parking with one seat on the wheel and one on the passenger seat? And when completing the parallel park (in the US) should you turn off the engine, apply parking brake etc. and let them know you are done, or do you just stop, let them know you're done (while the vehicle is still on) and then drive away when prompted? Sorry if I phrased either question in a confusing way.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад

      Hi K. M. - Thank you for your comment and query. And yes, you can put one hand on the wheel and one on the back of the passenger seat. See this video, but keep your seatbelt on for the duration of the test: ruclips.net/video/4ENiPyYKbKQ/видео.html&list=PL0x-bChcUvwGh-9zLO-49N78NkeCYIDgv&index=2 Yes, when you park the vehicle, apply the parking brake, put the automatic transmission into Park, and turn off the engine. The examiner want to know that you can secure the vehicle against movement because in the real world you're going to leave the vehicle. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Hi Miss Barber - thank you for your comment and query. Also, I would suggest you look at this video: ruclips.net/video/hksBvkf78VU/видео.html - this will show you the blind spots around your vehicle. Smart Drive Test If you plan on traveling when you get your license I recommend looking up laws regarding this especially if you go anywhere in America such as Martha's Vineyard. technically it is supposed to be a disclaimer in this video about that as an officer from there I showed this video too said that that was the agreement since Canada shares a continent with America. forum.freeadvice.com/parking-tickets-non-moving-violations-44/wrong-direction-violation-368936.html

    Hey rick, would you recommend using the 90 degree back parking or the 45 degree back parking in your daily life as an experienced licensed driver? Will 90 degree back parking disadvantage you later on when there are no parking lot landmarks/lines to help you such as in a garage situation?

      I reverse park every day. I find the angled method the easiest as you can view the spot better from the mirrors.
      Usually only use the perpendicular method when angled is not possible, like when cars are parked on both sides of the street next to my drive way and it still takes a few tries.
