13:47 Question - Do you hill park to secure the vehicle?
14:25 Runaway Vehicle - Bangor, Maine PD
For the purposes of the road, you must demonstrate that you can park and secure the vehicle against movement if there is a curb. If no curb is present, you must situate the steer tires so that the vehicle rolls off the roadway in the unlikely event that the brakes release.
There are 4 hill parks:
1) uphill with a curb
2) downhill with a curb
3) uphill without a curb
4) downhill without a curb
For three of the hill parks you turn the steer tires in toward the curb. ONLY on the uphill with a curb do you turn the steer tires out toward the centre of the roadway.
When a curb is present, you control the vehicle's speed and allow the front steer tire to rest against the curb, thus securing the vehicle against inadvertent movement.
If no curb is present, the steer tires are turned towards the shoulder of the road for both uphill and downhill parking.
It is the 3 & 1 rule - 3 of the 4 hill parks the steer tires are turned toward the shoulder of the road.
When uphill with a curb think of Superman: "Up, up & away!"

If you hear the instructor say the words either DOWNHILL at all or NO CURB -TURN YOUR WHEELS TO THE RIGHT.
If you hear the instructor say UPHILL WITH CURB - TURN YOUR WHEELS TO THE LEFT.

i watched this less than an hour before my g2 road test and just found out that this is on it. my instructor never taught me how to uphill/downhill park with my g1 so i have no idea to do it but this video helped me so so so much i passed first try

I will be taking mine soon. Can you tell me what they tested you on, up/downhill parking, parallel and intersections? Did you have to go on highway? Did they ask for reverse bay parking etc? Also, which registry? Sorry about too many questions. I’m nervous as hell.
don’t apologize! I totally understand. I was VERY nervous. I took my drivers test in downtown (New Urban Registry). The examiner was very friendly. He tested me on up/downhill parking, parallel parking, intersections, right turns, and some basic road signs. They did not make me go on the highway or do any reverse parking as I only took the Basic Road Test. One tip: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS come to a full stop before exiting a parking lot (i.e. if your registry has a parking lot, make sure to do that because i know a lot of people who failed their test for not stopping). But otherwise, just take a deep breath and i wish you all the best!!

thanks for being thorough. after passing my test, i was told to research, uphill parking. for some reason i thought that you should alwase have the wheels turned right, to avoid rolling into traffic. but i guess that 3-1 rule makes sense. now i just have to retrain my brain not to stop at the white lines, by stop signs. but actually before them. XD

really great info for safety...my number one concern is safety at all times...this is good information to have. Where I'm at there are very few hills of any kind, but this gives an extra peace of mind parking my rig in the mountains.
Hi Ladonna - most of this is for drivers taking a licence. In this day and age, it is really unlikely that brakes are going to release on a hill. As well, most automatic transmissions lock the drive train when it's in PARK. Thanks for your comment. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick! I really appreciate your videos, it makes me refresh my driving skills and improve on my driving performance. May I verify that if I apply the parking brake on an automatic transmission after turning the wheel towards the curb, do I still need to place it to neutral and release he brake pedal before shifting to park or I can set the parking brake and directly shift to park?
Thanks for the over and over demonstration. Your wording helps greatly. I will remember the 3 in 1. I turn my wheels to the left/out for uphill. To the right/in for downhill and no curb, and to the right/in for uphill and no curb. Whew!! Kept getting that wrong on the written practice test - but no more. I am ready for this sequence of questions. It is easy to execute when you are actually driving. But for me the right/left lingo created a block in my mind. Than you again.

Hey! I was wondering if I am supposed to touch the curb when downhill or uphill park because I failed my test for "touching the curb with my wheel" while downhill parking. During driver's education, my instructor emphasized that we should lightly touch the curb before parking and engaging the emergency brake.

This is a must if you live or drive in a hilly area. Especially in places like San Francisco or Pittsburgh. In fact, you will get a ticket in San Francisco if you are caught not curbing your wheels.

my driving instructor in alberta is teaching me to pull to the side of the curb and then put the car in N then turn the wheel in whichever direction it needs to go and let the car roll into the curb.. then when leaving the uphill park just drive off, but when leaving a down hill reverse and centre tires or at least have them to the left than put the car in drive than shoulder check, signal and drive out. she doesn’t let me dry steer but i do see you in D when leaving the downhill park and slowly moving the tires back to centre as you pull out. this seems so much more simple and i’d like to try it but i don’t know if my instructor will let me get away with this even though it seems like the better option! i mean the main goal here is parking either up hill or downhill and this seems so much easier than all the steps!

Very helpful. Here in Washington our driver's guide only mentions uphill. They also don't explain that you should rest the tire on the curb; instead of just putting it at an angle it with no contact.

According to my driving teacher, even when driving an automatic it's a good thing to also use the parking brake since you don't want it to seize when you do need it the most.
Do you actually have to turn off the car after parking during the test?

Thank you for the video. The uphill curb parking for the road test here is right after the traffic light on the main street. Do I wait for all the traffic to pass before pointing the wheels away to roll down?

Hi Rick, does it matter if I put the car in 'park' before pulling my parking break? Or should I pull the parking break first, and then put the car into 'park'?
there is one mistake at 9:26, uphill without a curb should crank the wheels all the way to the right, not left.

My driving instructor gave me a great tip about this to help me remember: if I’m on a curbed hill facing up, be like super man and go up up and away!

Down, right, silly is how I learned how to downhill park. although I forgot you weren't supposed to put the car in reverse
or you can use common sense and think about where the vehicle would go if the brakes failed. instead of memorising try understanding instead

thanks for all you videos they are really good. I am practicing for Alberta drivers test in an automatic. parking down hill with a curb should it also be in neutral? I had the vehicle mount the curb in drive (told that is an automatic fail) from the little bit of forward force drive always exerts I re-did it in neutral and it was fine but the person I was practicing with seemed to think that was questionable.... I was told the tester will be very picky that the car can not roll and that they would want to see that I can remove my foot from the brake and the vehicle not roll at all and if it does it is a fail. I am also wondering about leaving down hill with a curb parking, I was told to reverse a bit to unseat the wheel from the curb before turning the wheel to the left (that not doing that is hard on suspension/alignment)? I guess the Alberta rules are very tough on hitting curbs to the tune of automatic fail so I kind of want to be sure on the hill parking when you have to use the curb. thanks again for the great video's.
