Just because he works there doesn’t make him a rider or mechanic. Notice you didn’t go find the old head in the building
If I remember correctly He didn’t turn the nob in the center of the gas tank
The old timers were born in the e start days. Even they dont know that much anymore
@@rodan2852 I see old bikes all the time. Buddy got a shop. He learned from his old man.
@@oscarperaza8610he didn’t retard the timing or prime it it’s a process on these things
Yeah that’s what a lot of people are failing to remember. Of course he isn’t going to know.
If you brought these same people a car from the 60s they wouldn’t even know how to start it either. This bike is no different
Why are you asking the Receptionist to start the bike?
Because it makes for content.
Stop being a clown.
If he asked a master tech. They would start it in 20 seconds
Neither he can figure out how to do it 😂
Imagine not starting as a receptionist and hoping to make it to CEO someday
He wanted to keep his thousand dollars.
@@anthony5227 Why you calling people names little bro.
Next time go to a Ford dealer and get the youngest guy to start a model T
Hahaha! Exactly.
Or the oldest guy, I don't think it'll make a difference
Crank it 😂😂😂😂
Honestly with all that effort I'm surprised it ever took off in the first place😂
@@robertreed2824 eh... Consider the alternative at the time: had to give it fuel twice a day, even if it was parked. And sometimes if you took it more than 40 miles in a day, it would just drop dead.
i mean most car salesmen dont even drive manual
When my wife and I bought her car a few years ago she offered to pull it down for him since the salesman couldn't drive it. He quietly went and got a mechanic lol
Very true. I’ve been a car salesman for three years and I can count on one hand how many people I’ve worked with that could drive manual besides myself. Think about that.
@@BolverkAtlasia yea i dont blame them its just the evolution of the industry. ill always drive manual unless i physically cannot. its just how my brain works.
@@cpkay33 I’m the same way. Entire reason I ended up with a newer car was because it was a manual, which I had a very hard time tracking down for quite a while.
The smarter cars get, the dumber their drivers become. :3
I worked for two different Harley dealers over 10 years and only ever kickstarted one Harley. Most Harley’s with a kick start are older than most Harley mechanics at this point.
None of the Harley dealerships in the Bay Area would touch my bike (1972 FX). I have a guy for machine work/fabrication and a shop to mount my tires. Everything else is on me.
@@mjwbulich that’s the best way to deal with it. If you own an old bike get to know it inside and out. You never know when you might need some of that knowledge at the side of the road
Guy at the parts counter looked surprised when I asked him about some 1973 shovel stuff.... He said "A what".
This was a Harley dealership..
@jimmywall7325 all you should run nothing less than 100 LL in those bikes.
Just mixing it 1 to 1 will be better for the engines internals in the long run. They don't make gas like they used to.

Always used a little lead additive..
I wanted to see the other guy start it lol
We all did WE ALL DID MY FRIEND
I SWEAR!!!
Go watch the full video then...

I’m glad the comments had bros back
Growing up my grandma's neighbor had an old kick start Harley & I remember hearing him kicking and cussing for hours every morning trying to get it started. I never knew why his bike was so damn ornery to start but after 2-3 hours, it would fire right up like nothing was wrong and run all day
I Don,t Know Why Anyone Rides A Harley When There Are Much Better Bikes And A Lot Cheaper
@@roberthutchins3435 because it was 1982 & the choices were pretty limited.
@@roberthutchins3435I don’t know why anybody would capitalize each word of their sentence
@@roberthutchins3435 The feel. Harley is the only bike on the market to use a shared crankpin barring a couple of honda's that copied it that i know of. Mechanically it has drawbacks, but the mechanical downsides actually are what makes the riding feel as smooth as it does going down the road. It vibrates when stationary, but when your moving it smooths out into hands down one of the smoothest rides offered on a bike and i can see why it drew a cult following. Unfortunately it draw such a strong cult like following that these days now a motorcycle counter culture exists and it very well might result in the end of cruisers in the next few decades. Even Harley is starting to try new things as their cult following is getting old and is dying off.
The cheaper bikes aren't "better".
Everyone wants to compare a 40 or 50 year old Harley to a brand new Japanese Cruiser, but that's just stupid.
The Harley Low Rider ST is $23k brand new. The Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 is 19k. What's the difference you get for 4k? Better Chrome. Better fit and finish. A bike with a motor that has cylinder walls thick enough to rebuild and bore over when you reach enough miles that it starts to burn oil.
It's the things the younger generation will never know, because you buy a motorcycle, ride it 5000 miles and get scared of it and then you leave it sitting up until the fuel system is all gunked up.
Harley has kept up with modern systems just like every other manufacturer. They're all fuel injected and computer controlled now too.
Cope all you want, Harley is still the top dog in cruisers and Harley is the reason Japan started copying their bikes.
Get on a 40 year old Japanese bike sometime and then tell me how great it is. That's what I always had when I was young and they aren't as great as you pretend.
Btw, my buddy had a Shadow 1100 a few years back and that was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever ridden.
I know a guy who's been working at Harley Davidson since 1972. And he's a supreme gearhead for anything Harley Davidson. He's built many a bike, wrenched and by looking at him you'd never know or guess. That's the guy to give your bet to. Love the channel ❤
I think the way he said “you really know how to do it” was very genuine and curious, he was impressed by and respected the other guy’s knowledge and sounded like he wanted to learn himself, it’s such a blessing to have a humble, open mind.
They better start teaching it, because the way things are going some of these old skills could be lost outright to history if we don't.
The local HD dealer doesn't work on bikes older than 10 years because none of their service techs or mechanics have done the training packages on them. Wild.
Around 2002 I took my 1989 Yamaha FJ1200 in for a service in Alpharetta GA. Same thing - over 10 years old, wouldn't touch it.
You specifically picked someone who had the least chance of knowing it there
Of course he picked the guy with no beard??? what’s the matter don’t wanna gamble with a beard?
It’s because he knows he’d lose, bearded bikers know everything and anything about motorcycles.
@@-galaxy-5076 you know it

"Never actually done a kickstart before"😂
Why bother with something that belongs in a museum? BTW, new HD's also belong there.
Everything should have a backup kickstart imo
Junkyard. Old and new.
Can't believe he said that.
He must have never rode a dirtbike or anything
you could also do this with a guy who cleans windows on that bulding. He too do work in Harley Davidson company
He wasn’t even close to putting enough OOOMPFFFF into it,
The key is to lightly kick it over a few times until you build good compression, you will feel it in the pedal.
Once you’re at the top of the compression stroke, you can follow thru one hard kick and get it every time…
I don't think he even put the choke on
Yeah he didn't kick all the way through to the bottom of the stroke. He basically did 1/4 of the priming process, but if the owner rode it there it shouldn't even need priming. Literally just needed to make sure it's in neutral, open choke, turn on electrical system, kick through to the bottom of the stroke, and it should fire right up.
@@eriktruchinskas3747i was wondering if he even had the fuel line on lol
it’s not that simple in the video he shows that you have to flip/turn on a few things in a certain order to start it
@@jerms6642 i mean, since dude rode it there, it's really just turning on the run stop/electrical, closing the choke, twisting the throttle, and kicking all the way through in one solid kick. It was pretty easy to do back in the day, and more reliable (in my opinion) but if you've never started an older bike it's kind of like some kind of wizardry to people who only ride newer bikes.
It's definitely a process, but it's not like the war rig in Fury Road lol
I bet that fuel tank. Has a fuel shutoff valve. Located somewhere.
Yep, first off only the left side tank is fuel on those old WL 45 inch Flathead's, the right side tank is oil, to truly appreciate the design Goggle "Harley WL fuel and oil tanks" and you can find repops for sale and get a good look at their unique design, despite looking like they have the same volume the designers used a clever "kidney" design to make the fuel tank have about twice the volume as the oil tank, it really is pretty trick the way they did it and too hard to explain in a post.
As for the fuel shut off valve although I can't see it, which might be because it's painted but everyone I've ever seen was chrome, in front of the left tanks cap was a knob that you had to spin in one direction to turn on the fuel, for reserve you'd pull it up and spin it to lock it in place and then start looking for a gas station because you had about 15 to 20 miles to find one.
That's an easy one.
I wish he had bet me. I road my 57flh for 40years. Foot clutch, kick start hand shift. Last year of the Rigid frame
All magneto sportys baby, I dreamed of a 57 flh, too $$$.
Question with a foot clutch is it engaged with foot down or disengaged?
TYIA.
That’s exactly why he picked the dude who’s clearly new
I had someone try this with me at a motorbike restoration garage i worked at, we specialize in old bikes and i was sat in the office one day when some old guy came in and asked if anyone could take a look at his bike i was like yehh sure i can and the guy laughed at me and said "i dont want some kid who thinks he knows, i want the guy who does know" i just glared at him nd went out to his bike and asked what issues he was having(in a very short tone as i was kinda annoyed by him being the way he was) he told me he wasnt getting any fuel coming through, i rolled it off into the shop and told him id message him when it was done.
An hour or so later i had it fixed, the guy came in and iv never seen someone look more embarrassed and shocked as he did when i rode his bike out of the shop and round our yard to show him it was all fixed and good to go
What was wrong with it?😮
@@nathanramos1131 hoses where knackered from the ends bearly being on the tips to little holes in the hoses, i dont think it had been properly serviced since it left the factory and was probably having issues for months leading up to his noticable lack on power.

I'm guessing you'd be better off in a higher gear...
You’d end up running one-legged down a hill with a very expensive bike 🤣

I've done it barefoot...it's all about timing, fuel, and hitting it on the right stroke...was taught by some old graybeards...
I’ve quickly learned there’s a big difference between a motorcycle enthusiast and a Harley rider.
DUDE! Prime the choke, tickle the carburetor a bit, twist the throttle a couple of times, then push it downhill in 2nd gear, and pop that clutch! That's easier than Kickstarting it, especially if it hasn't run in a while, and the battery might be low
Or You Could Buy A Good Bike
If it's the stock carburetor, twisting the throttle a couple of times when it's not running won't do anything to help it start. No accelerator pump on those old Linkerts
@@wilburross9709 I would think it would open the fuel lines and help prime the carburetor without assistance from a pump. I've done that before on old carburetor bike, cars, lawnmowers, etc.
@@FREEDOMGUNNER If you say so. My experience has been it will open and close the butterfly, but not move any fuel without an accelerator pump

It's always funny watching someone try to start something old that starts in a funny way, I had alot of older guys clown on me for not knowing alot of stuff, but it's cool to learn from them afterwards because you can carry on the knowlefge

This is one of the greatest and truest statements made on RUclips
Still laughing
I’m a Honda nerd (driver not mechanic) and again and again salesmen at my local dealership say “you’d know more about that than I would” it’s the biggest bummer. If you work for an iconic brand, you should be all in
They hire for sales experience and select against knowledge cause knowledgeable people are less likely to peddle their sales B.S., and more likely to get the customer what they want instead of what the dealer wants sold.
@ThomJohnson-cl9it it's always funny when people say this sort of thing because the only thing I know for sure about your type is I've got at least a decade on you.
People like you forget people need jobs
I had a old kickstart Yamaha dirt bike when I was a kid and I miss it

Hey I will gladly take your 1000 bucks ,all the old Harley,s have a way to start them ,knuckles ,pans, shovel heads, it's all about priming the compression stroke
Buddy working at the desk wearing checkered Vans gets a ride to work from mom.
You beat me to it , Pointing out the Vans as improper equipment .
At least he’s got a job

Ain't nothing wrong with them vans.
He's working while you're knocking him down on RUclips
He chose him because he probably talks the town off that he works at Harley walked out like he’s Jesse James no shame in not knowing
They need to bring Pans and Shovels back. Weird enough, I jumped on 1 1st start, hand shift, kickstart. Kinda reminded me of my 250 racing days tbh 😅
The bike is 40 years older than the kid. We have electric timing now.
Beautiful bike!
Kid should be fired for wearing girl shoes in a bike shop.
This isn't a bike shop it's a Harley dealership 😂😂
First to remember is what operates the ignition system , even on old school , if theres no key , there has to be a switch 👍
I'd still give the guy an 'A' for effort, he didn't shy away from the offer.
Old kickstart processes are tricky to learn, but there will still be plenty of youths ready to take it up from their elders.
As a Harley rider and owner of both classics and moderns this bike is probably light years from anything he’s sat on. My 50 Panhead takes about 5 minutes to start. Prime the carb, close the choke, kick three times, reprime the carb, turn on ignition, kick it like it slept with my daughter, and hopefully enjoy. Before anyone says you don’t have to prime the carb mine has an SU carb. My 92 lowrider is pull the chock twist throttle twice and hit the switch. My 07 ultra is hit the switch and turn on the tunes.
I'm not surprised by this at all
Back in the day people uses to hand start there bikes for Contest see who wins.
Nice looking bike. I'm guessing you need to hold in the clutch handle & or prime the cyclinders.
Lol ....can we see someone start it? 😂😂😂

it’s still confusing i haven’t seen a kickstart HD since my grandfather was still alive and most times it would take abt 5 minutes to set it up etc before you hear the engine actually start 😂

In the employees defense. This is when Harley was an actual Harley.
Asking the person at the desk to start a Harley is crazy!😅
Fun fact watched Easy Rider DVD bonus section: the guy that rebuilt the Harleys for the film not only maintain them but had to start each bike when required for the actors.
Imagine working in a motorcycle shop and never have kicked a kick starter before
I worked at a Harley Dealer for 8 years, first as a technician, then assistant service manager. That bike is way older than anything you expect to encounter at a modern dealer 😂
Dude that guy that said that’s not fair is my uncle bro 😂😂😂

The checkered vans says it all. 😂
I was at my local Harley dealership with my 1975 FXE Shovelhead Harley. One of the mechanics was outside helping another customer. He came up to me and asked me what brand of motorcycle I had. There were no tank decals on my bike. He thought it was some sort of European bike. Hilarious. 😂
I'm waiting for the "can you start this pan/knucklehead and you'll get the pink slip"-challenge 😁
thats like asking a retail worker if they know how to stock the shelves
Also, I had a 2001 Honda Accord V6 sedan that I not only manual swapped with a 2003 Acura CL close ratio LSD six speed manual, but I also swapped the J30A1 (3.0L 200HP V6) for a JDM J32A (3.2L 260HP V6), and I also installed an AEM Series-II 30-6051 standalone, a custom built turbo kit with a Garrett GTS3582 dual ball bearing turbo, a full Nvidia exhaust with dual mufflers, Injector Nation 1000cc injectors, AEM 340 LPH fuel pump, and on 10 psi on 93 octane pump gas it made 502 whp. It was fairly laggy, so I installed a Nitrous Outlet dry 50 shot for down low and that thing was nuts off the line. The turbo would hit full boost by 3500 RPM with a 1.06 exhaust housing and it would blow both front tires off from 1st to 4th while accelerating. Not as badly as my 709 whp EJ8 Civic coupe did, but still ALOT of fun.
This is the same as me going to Walmart and asking an employee to show me how to fly a drone 😂
As a previous employee of Harley Davidson, I can tell you the employees that ride for the most part are in the garage, behind the parks counter and on the sales floor.
Thank u so much I’ve been wanting a job at Harley and this takes the cake
Used to work with Russ! Happy to see him on one of your videos! Give the kid a second chance 😂

That's, that's not a tech.
A fellow MMI guy in the video...nice!!! MMI class of 2012
My first motorcycle was a 589cc single kick start only. Beast of a bike. Those old Harley’s are actually easier to start.

Love the shout out to MMI. I went there to early model, late model and ERP.
I was starting a 53 pan head in Highschool. My teacher brought it in from his neighbor to rebuild it and tune it. I love kick start bikes and would have died had I been offered this. lol. Sad that more people don’t know the old ways. FYI that was ten years ago.
I was totally waiting for the kickback to the shin.

I was looking at this like why do I know these guys…remembered I used to sell tools there😂. Definitely one of the cooler shops I stopped at.
Watched a guy blow his leg apart at a biker party when I was 7 years old kicking an old bike. After that day the coolness of the old bikes wasn’t really enough for me to want one. I kicked every bike I owned for the first 20 years. First Harley was electric start in the 90’s for me.
It's like asking an Advance Auto guy to replace a battery 😂. Needs to know if it's 4 wheel drive first
My dad rebuilt a 1949 AJS 500cc bike. You dont just put a key in and hit the start button. Its like.... in gear, choke open (or closed cant remember) there was a lever you had to pull which... i think disengaged the crank from the engine, because you then had to kick the lever a bunch of times, drop the finger lever, the engine then engages and tries to kick over. if youve done it right it would go. if you didnt or it kicked back at you, your foot went *STRAIGHT THROUGH THE KICKSTARTER* straight into the ground at however much weight you were putting into it basically shattering your heel.
i miss that beautiful old girl.
I feel confident I could have almost started it, but that's only because I'm a history nerd.
