      To be more precise: Referring to the lawyer girl the cards only allow to buy merchandise. Not really sure if "merch" is the right expression for a whole bike.

    • @TristamWolf
      @TristamWolf Год назад +44

      @@Ano-Nymous Well, on the one hand, the specific language of the gift card (read aloud earlier) says "Products", but a motorcycle could still be called "Merchandise" accurately. On the other hand, though, the HD Cardholder's agreement stated that the dealership could choose to deny their purchase without much recourse. This purchase likely only went through because the buyer was the face of a nearly 2 million subscriber youtube channel. In basically any other case, the dealership would have pointed out that "This is very similar to a common scam tactic and we can't take that risk" and that'd be the end of it.

    Thing about the cashiers trying to talk you out of it is there is a giant scam where people get convinced to buy someone else a wild amount gift cards. You’ll typically see older people fall for it. Every grocery store I’d ever worked out would punish the cashier who sold the gift cards.

    • @Davinhomx
      @Davinhomx Год назад +3

      I just want to throw in a little math here. Now this could be totally wrong. But let's say small merch stuff has a 40% margin but such a bike only has a 20% margin cause it is more expensive to produce. Now we actually would have a problem for the shop. Cause let's say they pay 1% in fees to harley. Those fees are sadly not bound to their margins or what they actually make with a sale. So while they could make 8000$ for small merch stuff that added up to a summ of 20k. With half the margin for a single 20k bike sale they would only make 4000$ on that. And now the problem is that they still would have to pay the exact same fees for both. See what I mean?.
      Now part of why the salesman called him back was probably also because he never asked if they "could do something" about the price, if you get what I mean. Chances are you get them down to 19.500$ or even lower if you ask. He didn't, so the fee never truly was a problem. Don't know how this goes in the states but in germany you can generally ask about reduced price if you visit a cardealer even if the car is new

      @@Davinhomx let's put it this way. harley davidson doesn't make money from selling gift cards alone. they're losing money. they need to sell them to walmart for $22. you buy the card for $25. walmart keeps $1 and $3 go to the payment provider/ credit card company. so if you go to a dealer and want to pay with 300 $25 gift cards you're paying $7500 but the dealer only recieves $6600 becaue he had to sell them for $22 in the first place. roughtly a 10-15% decrease in margin. obviously they wouldn't want to do that when the customer could've just payed in cash

      I used to work for walmart back when covid started and around the peak of gift card scams, they hounded on the idea that if you were ringing up a customer for gift cards you better make sure that it's for a legit reason, and even capped out at like $500 in total for the cashier where any more would require a hire up, and if you were buying in bulk like 10+ cards, they'd just out right refuse to allow the transaction and suggest a digital purchase for them.
      I guess the main reason being the scams becoming more and more common. but It might also just be that if someone complains and wants a refund there's nothing the store can do as the card was auto-magically funded the moment the card is purchased (and the store directly sends that money to the card company) any kind of refund by the store would ultimately result in a hit for the store on a unsellable product that could've already been drained.

    Dude, this was pretty amazing because it was the exact situation that I went through. I did this over a year ago. I spent more on gift cards than you did and purchased my brand new Harley. Unfortunately, it still didn’t cover the cost of my new Harley. The only reason I didn’t cover the entire cost was because I ran out of stores on the way to the dealership, to buy enough gift cards, to cover the whole amount. But like I said, I spent more money on gift cards than you did. I never got charged a fee or a percentage.and the entire amount went towards the purchase of my motorcycle. We had an assembly line, going to run through all the cards.
    The main reason I did this was to get free gas ⛽️ because the dollar amount that I spent on the gift cards, a % of that got me free gas (fuel perks). I got approximately $3,000 in free gas (if memory serves me correctly), and that was my incentive to do it.

    The person who sold the gift card got 99% profit on the card. When the car was redeemed, it would actually show as a discount on the product, so it would come off the profit for that sale. So if you sold a gift card, your GP for the day would be insane (the aim was 12%), but when someone redeemed one, it killed your GP for the day.

    • @OnceShy_TwiceBitten
      @OnceShy_TwiceBitten Год назад +16

      They have to do it that way. At least at publicly traded companies, and because that is common practice, probably everywhere else too. It's because there are laws for publicly traded companies that determine when they can considered income vs liabilities etc on their balance sheet. There are very specific points in the transaction at which you can say you finally made profit on. When you take an order, like with gift card, you have not delivered the goods yet so the card, or the order is still a liability you owe. Only when you deliver it, ie they take the goods, from the store with the card can you then considered it profit.
      So they have to say, they sold this... and when it's redeemed they have to deduct it from their money. To balance the equation.

They probably got spooked at having to cover the cost of the “fee”, that’s when it got a little sideways. Second, when information is filtered up and the head cheese is only given so much info to make a decision, it’s always best to lean on the side of caution. They probably made a follow up call to fill in the info gaps and got the green light.

    Hey Sean! Love your stuff man! Just a FYI - the stores act so concerned about selling that many gift cards because scammers use gift cards to rip people off. They'll call some old lady claiming they're from the IRS, or her computer has a virus, etc...and that she has to go to a store and buy $X thousands of dollars worth of Google Play cards, otherwise they're going to send the police. Some gift cards can get redeemed as cash through PayPal, etc., which the scammers use to get the money.

    I love that you are able to drive it home straight after buying it. Where I live, you have to get the paperwork for the bike from both the seller and the car registry department that has all the specs of the bike... Then you have to go to the townhall of the county your residency is in to declare it to the IRS and with the paper you got there you have to get an appointment to register the vehicle and get your plates which can take a few weeks... THEN... you get to drive your bike....

Scams and taking stolen money to wash the funds is common. At staples I had this happen every week, and majority of time it was foreign exchange college students. Wanted to buy couple thousand in amazon or big box retailers like best buy, easily flipped. One store had a policy no gift cards with cash purchase, yeah its that bad.
