In my long career as an auto mechanic I exclusively worked on VWs for the first 28 years, when they began as aircooled. It was common to see them "swallow an exhaust valve" as in normal operation they required manual valve adjustments; being too tight as the valve stem stretched. I saved the heads of the broken off valves in a drawer in my toolbox and had 163 of them. I didn't see if the larger intakes or smaller exhaust valves was the one that snipped off. You brought back a lot of memories for me. Keep up the good work. Now in retirement at 76 years old I can just enjoy my 4 Honda motorcycles; my 2010 VFR 1200f, my 2014 CB1100, my 2012 CBR250r, and my 2023 Grom.

Limiting the scope of this project to just the top end is a gamble, but a brilliant one IMO. If he gets away with it, it will save tons of time, effort, and money. Hardly anyone would sink time into it without doing a total rebuild. You can't warranty it. I think he has a good shot. He might be doing a busa burnout 🔥🔥🔥 in the next episode.

@14:39 - That's an External Wastegate, not a Blow Off Valve. The Wastegate controls the amount of boost you produce and prevents the turbo from spinning too fast, by allowing some of the exhaust gas to bypass the turbo. This is an external wastegate because it's outside the turbo, versus a traditional swingvalve wastegate often located in the turbine housing / outlet. Because that bypassed exhaust doesn't go thru the turbo (which quiets it down by stealing some of it's energy), guys often "divorce" it's outlet from the exhaust like this into it's own "dump tube", which causes the engine to be much louder whenever the wastegate is open. The Blow Off Valve (BOV) is on intake side, on the charge piping between the turbocharger and throttle body, and is what makes the loud "psssh" noise on shifts etc. It allows boost pressure to be vented to the atmosphere when the throttle body is closed, so that the pressure doesn't reverse direction and go back into the turbo, causing the compressor to stop suddenly and stall, leading to wear, and increasing turbo spool time when the throttle is opened again. If you vent the boost back into the intake instead (what most factory turbos do), it's instead called a bypass valve (BPV) and is much quieter.

21:39 That manual cam chain tensioner is the culprit I'm telling you right now.
Every knucklehead that gets one over tightens it. That leads to your chain guides quickly wearing out and shaving plastic into the oil pan. That clogs the oil pickup screen. Oil starvation would most likely be why your cams are worn, your connecting rods are tight on the big end (unless ypu meant "tight" as in not sloppy and worn out) and the pistons got hot and detonated.
The detonation can cause valves to break as well as typical piston damage.

    • @mattyrs4

LOVE the RE5. Blew up my honda back in 88 on a roadtrip in Seguin Texas. Costed the Honda in to a local motorcycle dealership and it was done for. They had a beautiful RE5 sitting on the floor so I traded them on the spot. Wound up roadtripping that Suzuki across all of Texas (just stopping wherever and living out of a tent) for the next 6 months. Things you HAVE to know - it is a 2 stroke - the oil goes in a separate tank on the right hand side of the bike. If it has run without 2 stroke oil, it will likely have burned rotor tips & will need to replace them. Flush the coolant. Treat it like an old Suzuki Waterbuffalo in every way but the motor. It is a blast.

I agree, it looks like a terrible set up. The kinked drain hose, the PC3 & the angle that the waste gate is welded to the manifold all suck. The waste gate should free flow from the manifold with no harsh turns, as to prevent boost creep. And they should be using a better ECU that is easily tuned, not just piggybacking off the factory ecu

I have been working on turbo engines for many years, i used to work for Saab, and had myself, many project cars of my own with turbo engines. Based upon the damage on the pistons and the broken valve, i think the damage is from ignition. Your hayabusa enginge has no knock sensor connected to ignition/turbo pressure, so called APC on many cars. On modern engines you dont have ignition adjusted by vacuum anymore, thats made by the box for ignition. But the box need a sensor for micro knocking in the piston to quickly change the ingition and turbo pressure, and that does not exist on hayabusa boxes. Also in my opinion you need warmer sparks and might be a little low on fuel flow (thats probably what causes the strange melting of pistons). On the new engine you need to messure exhaust temperature, you dont want more than 920-930C, then you need to up the fuel.

Twenty three years later, it was nice to see how things really work. I had a 96 Blackbird that I felt was too slow. I had engine work done (port and polish) and some tuning and felt it was still too slow. I had the bike go on a diet (Dymag Carbon Fiber rims, all bolts other than weight bearing were replaced with aluminum and felt it was still too slow. I then had a turbo installed. Mark Moisan from American Turbo in Naples, FL had a kit for the blackbird. My bike was built to be a sleeper and if I wanted to run in high boost (Aerodyne Turbo) I had to mix VP Racing VP16 and 92 pump 50/50. If I was on low boost, pump gas was fine.
One night, 10 miles past nowhere, at 160, the bike felt weird. I pulled the clutch in and 2 seconds later the whole bike shut off. I had the engine pulled. I am nowhere near the knowledge level of you or even capable of repairing it. When the engine was pulled, it did make the sounds you mentioned you didn't want to hear. When the engine was opened up, we learned that the biggest piece of piston left was about the size of a thumbnail. The piston exploded into pieces and the crank ripped into the cylinder wall.
Your explanation of all the workings was very educational for me. Now I know what things are and can apply it to what happened to me. That bike had 280hp, 180lbs of torgue and was a little more than 400lbs wet. I miss that bike.
