But if you use "may" it describes the permission you have to do something

I liked my english teacher in 7th and 10th grade. His character was both theatrical and realistic, he told stories as examples for the lessons he told, and the whole aura of the room changes when he comes inside the classroom

The difference between "may" and "can" back then was so important in our English Class in highschool. But as you got into college, it's unnecessary tbh as long as people can understand you, it doesn't really matter.
This only applies to verbal communication. In written communication, you have to practice proper grammar, of course.

Honestly it makes more sense when you are trying to learn the English language itself, that way you actually know the difference between "can" and "may".
However, this also exists in schools where we all speak English natively! We all already know the difference between "can" and "may" but we just say "can" just because we can. (pun not intended)
Then the teacher will be like, "I don't know, can you?" and it is so annoying because we just wanna go to the restroom lol

I once was late (transport issues) to institute and I had English class, and made the same mistake asking for permission to come in. My teacher went on 5 minutes rant/hysterics before she let me re-ask correctly and two more minutes when I was moving to my place (that's another messed part about her: it was small classroom and 14 students in my group, but she made us always sit in same places, something about "I wouldn't remember who's who otherwise")

i specifically love my english teacher of grade 6th even though it was a dark school year for me, no friends to hangout with, always getting bullied, my recess and my friends recess are different i still liked my teacher
then theres my filipino teacher of 9th grade, mans made me cry
so long story short we were tasked to do this book thing for the last day i guess and we were supposed to write down what encouraging things our parents have said to us
me not remembering anything i jokingly said "what if our parents didnt have anything encouraging to say to us?"
