When I was 17, I started learning the violin. I was 3rd chair in high school orchestra and then headed off to college. I kept bothering my roommates when I played in my dorm room. People also told me "you can't get good at the violin because you started so late in life." So I stopped playing and I always regretted it. Now I am 41 and my kid is 8 and is learning the violin, piano and guitar. A few months ago he showed me a video called "Why Violin is the Hardest Instrument" and introduced me to Twoset! And I bought myself a violin and now I practice with my kid every day. I feel like my younger self again - like I got back a part of me I thought I'd lost. Big thanks to you two, Brett and Eddy!
UPDATE 10/6/2021 - Thank you so much for all your comments, it's so uplifting to hear all your stories of starting "late!" A year after picking up violin again (after a 20 year hiatus) I still play violin with my kid, and playing music is a part of my daily life. We now have 2 guitars, a bass guitar, mandolin, cello, viola, keyboard, harmonica, snare drum , bodhran, doumbek -- and more! -- in the house and we've have had a ball just making music (and lots of noise). What's interesting is that even after 20 years of NOT playing violin, I play SO MUCH BETTER, faster and longer NOW than I did when I stopped. Pieces I couldn't play 20 years ago are easier to learn now because I play "for fun" instead of trying to be perfect. I am learning Irish and bluegrass fiddle, and I am on Suzuki violin book 5 and my kid is on Suzuki violin book 2! Don't make my mistake -- don't let anyone tell you that you "can't" do something, even if you feel like you are too old or not talented enough. Your older self will thank you later!

Well, comparitively speaking, from those they've interviewed, they aren't. But prodigy doesn't guarantee adult success and lack of prodigy status doesn't mean the artist won't become amazing. It matters how much you practice and how long your passion for the instrument endures.

@@pzykhe Personally, I really do that the idea of 'prodigy' is a myth. It is fundamentally really about practise. A person can be a 'prodigy' but not be successful in the long-term. All the term means is that the person, especially a young child, is an early starter rather than a late bloomer, and has demonstrated promising POTENTIAL. This is ONLY POTENTIAL, not actual success, and does not show much at all about long-term success.
I urge everyone to stop being so caught up by the term 'prodigy'.

I feel like that's generally what happens when you study something in higher education, especially something like music.. Your technical bits gets better but school kills the confidence/ease with which we once did things.. because now you've learnt the technicalities behind everything, your brain overanalyses it and when you play, subconsciously, you play less freely because of all the technical things you've learnt.
idk if this even makes sense, but it's what happened to me with creative writing.. I became so focused on the technical parts of English and plot devices and things like that, and ended up killing the stream of ideas that used to come so easily..

I started watching their videos about a year ago just for fun, not because I wanted to play violin or anything. I don't come from a musical or even anything art background, I grew up in an environment where most people I know are doing Science or Business. Before TwoSet, I don't really listen to much classical music, which was a shame because I have found so many awesome pieces that have now became my favorite. I came to an orchestra for the first time a few months ago and it was beautiful. TwoSet really truly have made classical music became more relevant to a wider range of audience in the young generation. I appreciate and am thankful for what they have been doing. I still have not started playing any instrument, but recently, I have been entertaining thoughts like maybe I could start playing, I even look up information online like where to get lessons, etc.

They say that they had potential but plateaued and became RUclipsrs instead… but honestly that was probably the best outcome for them.
They single-handedly brought classical music into the online mainstream.
They made classical musicianship seem fun, while still inspiring young musicians to keeping learning and practicing.
Ask any musician on RUclips who they think of when they think of classical music and TwoSetViolin will surely come up.
They gained traction and now they probably make a decent amount of money off RUclips and selling merch.
All that is one hell of an achievement considering that we live in the TikTok generation.
If they became elite professional soloists or something, I would wager that most of us watching would not know who they are, and Brett and Eddy’s lives would probably we a lot more stressful.

Why are we ignoring 1:49 ? The fact that Brett didn't phrase it as a joke and his expression slowly getting cold is so heartbreaking..
Guys, you give yourselves much less credit than you deserve. As someone who just picked violin, i genuinely think your childhood performances were good. None of them were horrible, because you visibly put all your effort in the limits of your ability at that time, and mistakes are part of being better musicians.
Comparing ourselves to others is unavoidable, and being a prodigy or top class soloist is sadly not attainable for everyone, but you're never a failure. You may not have realised your dream carreers but you're opening more youth's minds to classical music and actually making it enjoyable and getting it out of the elitist aspect, especially in countries where musical training is not usual or available. And that is impressive in itself.
I know saying all that may not erase some regret of the future that could have been for you two, but we are thankful you went up this path. Stay strong !

I'm a brass player and I hit a range plateau in 2nd year. No matter what I did I just couldn't get any higher for about 6 months. It was so frustrating and I ended up with really bloodshot eyes from the strain of trying to get higher. Plus it's so easy to psych yourself out when you get in your own head. It does get better as you get older.

To be honest, I feel like when you were young you didn't compare yourself to others and just went for it, no matter how it sounded. You were present and confident. As you got older, your technical skills got better but you somehow lost confidence or let life tell you you're not good enough. I understand why but do try and be easier on yourselves. After all, you play because you love it so why let a 7 year old prodigy video destroy your confidence? To me it's a matter of how you perceive yourselves more than how "bad" you actually are. So just keep going and know that you're good enough just the way you are, and you'll grow with time, in your own time.

13:05 that is so right. Most children have a "fresh" and innocent approach when learning an instrument. Unfortunately, at some time, the self-doubt and other negative feelings (concerning the performance, technique and so on) will kick in. It's important to work with these feelings and accept their existence. The more you try to push them away, the "bigger" they get.

I understand you both put years of time and effort into your dream of becoming soloists. But I wouldn't consider where you are a failure.
You guys continue to hone your art and I hear improvement every year. You're performing, laughing and inspiring others, while achieving a massive reach.
So, you're not Ling Ling... Not even Ling Ling IS Ling Ling!
You guys have and continue to build something beautiful that exists thanks to your imperfections. Frailty and beauty often go hand in hand.
