same case here! I am physically very active, am social (at least when I'm at school), try to eat always as healthy as possible.. but the thing that throws everything out the window is my lack of sleep; I barely even get 7 hours per day because of wattpad/tumblr reading :// adding to the equation that I am a very big procrastinator and often struggle to get things done hgjhdhjdgfjhabja

A trick I use to stop procrastinating is to tell myself that I would do that thing for as little time possible, like studying or exercising for 30 seconds. As soon as I started I would realize that it wasn't so painful and keep doing it

I watched a video recently where a guy advised that you set a timer for 5 minutes to practice guitar, so you didn't make the excuse of having no time to practice, 5 minutes quickly turns into 10 then 20 etc. Works for me.

    • @WoodenClockwerk
      @WoodenClockwerk 5 лет назад +264

Yet another strategy I use is (after getting started doing your objectives) is breaking down the time I work an hour into 45 minutes of work and a 15 minute break, but I set a 15 minute timer for all of it. This let's me know how much work I an achieve and how much time could be wasting, allowing me to optimize my time spent and also challenge myself to work more efficient or faster. This depends on the hobby though of course.

I’ m a teacher and ı think people tend to procrastinate the things they wanna make or learn because of they think if they dont spend their max effort and time there will be nothing meaningful. For exp if a student wanna learn a lesson thinks like I need to study this subject/lesson for hours, but studying for hours is boring or I dont need enough time for it today, lets try it the other day. And the other day will be just the same. U need to understand that if u dont do anything about something u ll get nothing. If u do whatever u wanna do for maybe a minute, maybe 10, maybe 1 hour doesnt matter it will progress. So u wanna learn chem u can start with 10 min. study every day or every weekend as u wish, finally after a few months u definitely have knowledge about chem. We always think like if i make many hours effort suddenly we will be perfect on it. But reality is if u spent efforts, even tiny efforts like baby steps u will learn how to walk

Modivation and procrastination still to this day are things I struggle with but not because I don’t want to put the max effort in school for me the problem was ADHD where I could learn Morse code in a week (which I have done ( this is called hyper focus for those with ADHD) yet not be able to do one homework assignment without having a breakdown so most of these tips teachers gave me to “just try” and not be so called “lazy” never rlly worked, keep in mind I still took medication for this yet it wouldn’t helped fully and that’s not ever possible for it too, and I don’t think many ppl keep in mind how many ppl have disorders like this that can also cause these problems :)

Key points of the video :
1.We dont feel like doing new things is because learning new things triggers the same part of the brain which gets triggered when we get hurt so we should stop thinking and start doing it. No one is gonna come and help us in that.
After when we start doing the new things after some time when we dont get the desired result then we tend to stop doing it here's the catch we should not stop here and continue to work.
    2.Learning is repetition amd relearning.
Have a sufficient amount of sleep and stay physically active (doing workout)
    3. Even with everyone's help we should do things by ourself.
    4. It gets tough thats when it gets easier.
Learn about something so deeply that it feels like real.
    5. You still have to do lot of studying. If you see something wrong start over again.
    6. Don't study one thing over and over again.
    7. Everything is about the process. Keep taking small steps and one day you will be on the top.

Notes for anybody who needs to review:
    1. Stop procrastinating, just start doing it. Do it now. The biggest hurdle is putting it off. When you start doing it, there'll be a point when you'll get frustrated because there's no instant reward/gratification, so you'll get distracted and put it off again. To solve this, just start doing it again. Long term satisfaction is worth more than the short term. Take initiative.
    2. It takes time to remember things. You can't soak it up everything right away. Learning is about repetition. Don't try to learn everything about a subject all at once. You can focus on certain areas you're really curious about first. For example, you don't have to follow an instructional book in chronological order you can focus on the pages you need now, and then when you come back to the same pages it'll be a refresher. Additionally, sleep lots and exercise. Interact socially with other people. Give yourself a break and let your brain rest. It'll prevent yourself from burning out, improve your mood and strengthen your motivation to continue learning.
    3. You have to try it out and apply what you're learning by yourself. Practice what you've learned. Your brain has 2 modes of thinking. The focused mode (logical/left-brain) and the diffused mode (creative/right-brain). You can shift between these 2 modes. When you're learning something new, eliminate all distractions so you have total concentration. This'll increase the efficiency of your memory. When you're just reviewing something, you can listen to music or videos in the background. You can let your mind wander because you're just reinforcing what you've already learned.
    4. It will get more difficult as you continue learning something. But it's alright, that feeling is normal. Try to understand the main ideas and not get stuck in the details. Your brain will eventually connect with the more complicated things.
    5. Study, review and test yourself on what you've learned. However, don't just study one area. Go back and forth between different things so you give yourself space to repeat and process these things you're learning.
    6. It takes time. It's a process. It can be stressful. Learning something new is daunting and that's why most people don't do it and procrastinate. But understand that you don't have to know everything right away. Start off with small steps. Do it gradually and over time you'll be surprised at how much you've learned.

Schools should be set up so that we can explore our interests early and then begin learning them somewhere in our teens. Why devote 12 years of your life to that when you could spend 6 years being introduced to a ton of different cool stuff and then another 6 to narrowing down your options.
I just hate school- it kills creativity.

This video really nails the pain and joy of learning! I especially love the point about "just start doing it" - it's like a shot of adrenaline for procrastinators. Honestly, just starting makes everything seem way easier. And the analogy about how learning something new literally hurts your brain? Spot on! It’s like, "I know I should be doing something productive, but I’d rather just lay on the couch and watch RUclips." Haha!
Also, the part about “sleep and exercise helping you learn” totally resonates with me. Who can resist memorizing vocab while running, right? But hey, just a heads-up: don’t exhaust yourself with learning before exercising, or you won’t even have the energy to run.
Overall, the video is really helpful. It tells us that real learning isn't about finding the perfect moment; it's about taking action and sticking with it. Time to put down the procrastination and take that first step, even if it’s just opening that dusty old book!

1 - Procrastination: just do it (despite how much your brain dislikes it)
2 - How to remember: SYNAPSES --> make what you learn important / sleep well / exercise / don't be a shut-in neet
3 - Outside help: 2 sides of the brain, use them appropriately. Don't let others "learn for you".
4 - Tough new things: Learn it until you make it relatable, don't get stuck with the details
5 - Practicing: balance the 2 sides of the brain (learning / creating); practice again what you got wrong the first time
6 - The process: don't expect pain of the learning, focus on what you can do with what you have right now to get better
Hope this helps! Also, great video, you explain things well with a small touch of humor

I grew up as a smart kid, never really trying to do things, just learning naturally and being praised for that. Then I grew up and started noticing that I have a really hard time learning things, specially because I never learnt how to, in fact, try. Nowadays I get both angry and sad with myself for being so bad at everything, specially at learning, and I also started dropping everything midway or never starting something new. My English is my better example, I started learning when I was 8 and after a few years struggling with it I stopped learning, now I have a very bad pronounce, a really strong accent and a terrible grammar, basically, a very broken English.
I'm trying to cope with my expectations and trying to lower them, I'm also trying to throw the idea that being bad at something or trying hard is the same as a failure and that this will make my parents less proud of me, what, in fact, happens.

Heh i had a friend in school who used to get us all together in the 15 mins before a maths test and teach us a song about the formulas. She's a school teacher now. Maybe the reason you don't remember your maths is because you didn't learn them to the tune of the fresh prince of bel air! 😄 But likely it's because you need to create more of a need for those particular mathematical concepts in your life.

    Summary (for future reference):
    Chapter 1: Procrastination
You don’t like the idea of learning something new because it adds a small amount of stress to your life and as a result can cause anxiety. Solution is: JUST DO IT. The pain of learning will go away quickly, JUST DO IT, NOW. Remember this: Long term Satisfaction is far better than short term joy.
Chapter 2: Remember what you learned
Brain remembers things based on how important they are so make your brain think the things you are learning are important. Reinforce and strengthen the synapses in your brain by doing things multiple times and going over it multiple times. Don’t tackle everything at once and focus on the things you really need to improve on. Most important thing in the whole video: SLEEP, EXERCISE AND SOCIAL CONTANT IS EVERYTHING, PRIORITIZE THESE THINGS, no compromises, you hear that? NO COMPROMISES!!
Chapter 3: You are on your own.
2 modes of thinking, focuses and diffused. Focused with 0 distractions is for learning new things. Diffused is for expressing. You must do things yourself, problem solving is part of the process.
    Chapter 4: It gets tough
Get across the major idea, don’t get lost in the details. Your brain will learn easier if it has something to relate to, so try to get to that point.
    Chapter 5: You must study
You have to test yourself to remember things, this is why it needs to be important, because you know that you are going to test yourself on it. Try to do things from memory, mistakes are fine if you correct them and learn from them, this is apart of the learning process. Don’t refuse to learn new things when you get good at remembering things you already learned. Set aside time for deliberate practice. Don’t focus for very long periods on just one thing. Change between things and don’t be scared to mix things up. Set time for dedicated learning and time for free exploration for optimal improvement.
Chapter 6: Everything is about the process
Procrastination is normal. Unfamiliar things will feel strange and uncomfortable. Don’t focus about everything up ahead all the time, focus on the things RIGHT NOW. It will become easier the more you do it. Initiative is everything, without this there is no learning. Put in some investment of time, you will get something done, no matter how small you did something and that is what counts.

*Things I learned about learning things:*
    1. The most effective practice is 'Deliberate Practice': Not just going from step 1 to step 2, but wanting to learn a specific thing, where the skill is the tool and not the endgoal. You learn faster when you want to learn to play your favorite song, photoshop a new hair color on yourself, or make those jeans shorter.
    2. (If you aren't disciplined AF:) Don't focus on reaching your goal, but make the process a part of your identity and lifestyle. If you want to read more books or lose/gain weight, you need to become a person who enjoys reading, or someone who cares for their body. Adapt your lifestyle a little bit. Not only will it be easier to keep it up, you'll also be less hard on yourself and feel more pride for your long term achievements instead of shame for not doing well enough in a short term.
    3. Know what to go for and what to give up! (or put on hold) Yes, it would be sick to be a multi talented musician, but it's very unsatisfying to dream about playing 10 instruments for years and just not do anything. Either buy a secondhand instrument, start there and go for it, or make peace with the fact it's just a fantasy and stop saying you're gonna learn it in the future. You can always change your mind, but at least you won't have to feel guilty about not having started 3 years ago. And maybe when you give up on 9 of your 10 dream skills, it'll create space to actually start that 1 skill.

    • @jairusenad9333
      @jairusenad9333 5 лет назад

The advice is good until number 3 which is basically saying it's okay to give up just be positive and I don't really want to agree on that because right now I am on a belief that anything that I dream to become I can achieve it. Of course i'm also taking a reality check like becoming an astronaut is really hard and close to impossible but that's why you need to have boundaries and these boundaries help you understand that despite the belief you still need to know that it's not enough of making it as an identity but rather know where you stand and keep improving. When I want to believe on something I dream of it everyday and to not get frustrated I always set to be aware of my boundaries and then improve on what's lacking.

It's always when I want to learn something I say something like: "I wish I had started this 10 years ago, I would've already mastered it by now.", which is stupid because I'm never going to start anything if I could have started it before. I actually identified the axioms for productivity and one of the most important ones, which you talked about in the end is to focus on the process. It's always the problem with this type of people (including myself), which is we are too enamored by the results but we don't actually enjoy the process. There are many examples: people who really love music but don't know how to make it, who love drawing but can't draw, who love gaming but can't develop games. It seems that we love something too much sometimes where it actually hinders us. Passion is not the be all end goal, it's a big lie. So many times you see fans being more passionate about the artist's work much more than the artist themselves. It is because they have a mystical view of their product. When we see that amazing painting, song or game, we don't look at it as a technical thing. A drawing isn't a series of lines, shapes and colors, it is a 'masterpiece', something that is produced by the divine grace of the artist. We don't like to question that and shatter the illusion because as long as that thing is so far off our capabilities, we also don't feel the angst of needing to reproduce it, because it is something we would never be able to do.
TL;DR: the most important advice to learn anything is have a PROCESS oriented mindset rather than a goal oriented one. Passion is a lie, and many times it hinders people rather than assist them in pursuing their crafts. You have to be passionate about the TECHNICAL details of your material, not the end product, because liking to put effort into it is what will make you eventually develop, rather than daydream about what it could turn out to be in the end.

Agreed because I'm mostly goal-oriented in drawing. Over the years, there's always this constant feeling of "I should do this perfectly" which sometimes led me not to draw at all. I still tried, but it's exhausting because I don't think I'm getting any better unlike artists I look up to. It just hurts me to see them doing better than me so I just get discouraged.
I'm trying to change now though. It's tough since I have this tendency of being perfect on my craft, but I put aside my goal-oriented mindset and instead master this craft one step at a time. Believe it or not, I started to like the process more unlike several years ago!
To those people aspiring to be an artist, it's okay to have someone to look up to. But if you really are passionate and willing to master this craft, get your pencil and eraser! Search some stuff online, one step at a time so you won't be overwhelmed :))
      Have a good day!

So basically I need to tackle my Insomnia and social anxiety to learn better,
    great...

    • @Magiczilla
      @Magiczilla 5 лет назад +44

I can bit relate my past self to what you say. So imma pop some wisdom. First, check if your insomnia is physically or mentally related. as in - is your brain fucked up, or you just had an awful sleeping patter for too long of a time that you end up sleeping poorly. I had a latter one.
Both of sleeping disorder and anxiety is really well tackled with discipline. Wake up every day at 8, 9 am. No excuses. No going back to bed. No naps. I repeat, no naps. Discipline yourself. Your brain is manipulator but can be manipulated as well by... Well... Itself.
You will be like shit for week or two and then you may click in.
If you have issue waking up - there is app called "cant wake up alarm", that requires you to do tasks to turn it off. So. Put 3 alarms with 3 different annoying sounds and place phone on opposite side of room. Again, this is just in case if you fucked yourself to insomnia stage.
As for anxiety - push yourself one step more..do it simple. I had anxiety to go.to store and buy cookies. Then i went and bought cookies AND smth new that I wanted to try but made me uncomfy to buy it...as in new taste of a soda or new chips...
      Small steps.
Then set goals. Do here, do this, do then. raise those goals as you challenge yourself.
      Few things to remember:
Find mantra songs. Something that will remind you to live, not to waste time in a bubble. Personal favorite that helped me kill anxiety fully, just 2 months ago - baz luhrman's everybodys free to wear sunscreen.
Adding physical exercises when you feel like making excuse will, scientifically proven, help.
Dont push yourself on all fronts. Step by step toward a new horizon. New life. It will take a long time, there WILL be setbacks, but - dont allow yourself to make an excuse and ruin what you are building. You may sacrifice learning. But do it. Mental health comes first. (I studied my uni for 7 and half years, due to anxiety, depression and cowardice. It took time, but I beat them all together).
Also, every anxiety has its root. Mine was education, aka due to uni and my cowardice I developed anxiety. Finishing uni helped me unchain shackles. In other words - find a root of an issue, cause there lies an answer to healing. Focus on solution, not on a problem.
Last but not the least. Dont say "I cant do it" or stuff like that. It does take shitload of time, but it will be worth it. You are worth of it.

Learning can also get you out of this insomnia and social anxiety ! Just find something cool to learn and try to learn it. It's not hard to learn to draw (some basics stuffs) and really rewarding !
Plus, you will meet new people if you go outside to draw and convert you insomnia into beatifull drawings !
      Love.

    "Take Initiative"
That's a hard thing for many members of a group project to do in school. Usually, it takes till the last minute for somebody to "take initiative" and actually text the group what the plan is going to be only to not have anyone respond.

I think it's from growing up as a "gifted" kid, but no self-help (I suppose that's what this is) has ever spoken to me so personally. I'll be honest, it made me feel called out more than once, especially at the part where you talk about how some people start trusting their intuition so much that what their intuition says becomes the right thing, but the tone of this video just made me want to do better. Wonderful job!

the taking breaks thing is VERY important. When learning anything, even a sport or something mostly physical, the thing that gets worked up the most is your brain.
Oh, you wanna learn bass? Well guess what, your fingers are not going to be your main problem, your brain is. Take breaks, sleep, and when you feel like you can't play right or learn anything for the day, leave it at that. You've reached your limit, and you literally can NOT go over it
