Thank you so much. For years I've practiced all of the fundamentals and just couldn't put them all together seamlessly. Your videos help me do that. I've learned the chords, learned that arpeggios, learned the scales, learned the triads, learned CAGED etc. Your videos are helping me put them all together. You are correct by not showing the detailed fingerings. People should learn the fundamentals then come check out these videos. If they need you to show the fingerings that's because they haven't put the time in. Thanks for keeping it at a level that shows how you think and how to stitch it all together. If you were to break it down even further you would just be wasting a lot of people's time. Thank you so much for not doing that and in fact doing the exact opposite and really focusing my time. If it's something unusual, I'm thinking Uncle Larry type chords here, then of course show the fingerings. I think you're striking a perfect balance. Love your videos keep it up!
I’ll tell ya, if people are complaining you don’t zoom in or tell them exactly what note/fret you’re playing every second they need to go back in time a little and remember what learning this stuff was like before RUclips and the internet. We as the players need to put some work in! When I was first learning I used to record tv performances on VHS and have my face pressed against the old tube tv trying to figure out what guys were doing, what you’re showing us here is amazing and priceless FOR FREE! Thanks so much for your time and effort it’s greatly appreciated and inspiring to watch
Amen brother I broke 100 tape players rewinding to the next notes learning phrase by phrase by ear I started at 10 got a job with some great teachers from bluegrass guys to metal and I was a sponge they never showed me anything but I could hear the lessons at times when I had a break and I learned alot but I really grasped everything teaching that taught me more than anything
Imagine the incredible self-loathing of the individual who leaves a negative comment on a channel that just tries to make you a better guitarist. Just gotta feel bad for those people.
These are top notch lessons, for FREE. Just listening to you play is a free lesson for any guitarist. I have learned so much from you. I'm 61 yrs old and am a sideman/guitarist in a few local bands. I have been playing since I was 12. The extra skills I am learning from you has been noticed by my peers. And has gotten me more gigs, requests to sit in, and studio work. You are never too old to learn more and see a different view of things that might open up a world of playing. These videos help so much when you sit in with a band and have to come up with a solo on the fly. I have used the CAGED system for years but I am really seeing the neck better than ever and rarely get lost, so much thanks to you. My advice, for what it is worth, to any of those having trouble or not getting things as fast as they want is to maybe listen and watch the video a couple times without playing. Absorb how G holds the guitar and how his hands are relaxed and efficient. Perhaps then before tackling the specific parts you want to learn and integrate, try to play the backing chords as he is playing to see how it relates to the music he is creating. You be the backup, and learn where he is going, trial by fire if you will. Mind timing, bending in tune, melody and chord structure rather than following the "Tablature" approach to which we all might rely on too much.
These videos are gold. Wishing I had this taught to me back in 1983 when I started. It truly does open it all up…IF you do the work and run though this stuff. 56 year old feeling like 🤯🤓😎
Friends....if you slow down the video to 50% speed it makes a HUGE difference watching Guthrie playing these super tasty chops at a lower speed. I was able to figure out most of the riffs at the lower speed and cool thing is the notes do not change pitch when you lower the speed. I love this playing so much I decided today to contact him for private zoom lessons. He is without a doubt the one of the very best teachers and players on YT. Way to go Guthrie. You rock brotherman🤘
Thanks for stressing the caged thing. After 44 years of playing , it all makes perfect sense now. I cannot unsee it. I even spend about 15 minutes of playing time naming each note . Thanks Guthrie very much. I'm no Danny Gatton . Lol
You make the average guitar player and even more advanced have to take the time to use the brain to break things down into more details. That helps each player to find their own style doing the work. We each have a different approach to how we do everything. I just stop the video and play back the things that are new to me or that I've not worked on enough. Been at this on and off for 50 years. At some points in time when time allows and I get inspired by someones playing I dive in and start really practicing again. The fingers don't take long to get back to where I may have been. It's the brain that needs the repetitions again. I just started watching your videos from catching you with Brett Papa the other day and your playing is so melodic. I've never had a problem with playing melodically and simply by ear. It was trying to have my brain keep pace with my playing ability. Breaking down your videos I've watched the past few nights have got me back hopefully in a consistent way and practice mode. Will be diving in more each day. Hopefully life and work doesn't pull me away too much. Was waiting until I retired to really get serious again, but maybe this will be the jump start I need.
I M ON A HEAVY HEAVY CRAZE OF PLAYING AND INCLUDING CHOPS SOUTHERN ROCK AND ROCK COUNTRY...LISTENING TO YOU AND OTHER COOL DUDES INSPIRE ME ....GOD BLESS YOU!!
I'm a long time basic chord strummer, and at first I thought this was all hopelessly beyond me. But watching you play in the vids is just so enjoyable I've kept watching, and I think my brain has gradually started to grasp how I can build lead licks off the basic chord shapes I've always known, if I get comfortable using them up the full length of the neck. I'm sure it's all obvious to advanced players, but to me it's a nice, if gradual, learning breakthrough on an instrument I've been messing with for 50 years. You've got a great way of putting it together. Thanks.
wow .. I ve played hard rock for 30+ yrs in bands .. Country players are so musical .. I love it and aspire to be able to play it .. You sir, are an inspiration. If anybody is dumb enough to make a negative comment .. Thats ignorant and ridiculous.. Keep up the phenomenal instruction.. I feel fortunate to have stumbled across your channel .. You and Andy Wood .. My favourites
I often listen to your episodes when I don't have a guitar with me. I don't really play country, but I just like to listen to your approach. Thank you.
Please know Mr GT just how grateful we are for taking the time to share your musical knowledge for FREE!. We all need to remember you make your living playing and teaching. As the saying goes, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. So, ANYTHING you share is just a bit of manna from Nashville Heaven so-to-speak. Now, us kids need to just go do our homework!

It was only a few years ago that I could barely grasp whatnyou were talking about. Now, for the most part I can pretty much follow in real time. Yeah, I've worked hard and put in the hours, but having a guru to lead me down the path of guitar goodness has made it so much easier. Can't thank you enough!
Can only say thankyou even though that is not a big enough word for everything you generously give us in sharing your time and seemingly limitless knowledge on the instrument we all love.
Perfect pacing and presentation for me at least. We can always pause, rewind, and watch again at slower speed if needed. It's the concepts that are important, not being spoonfed fret numbers. Awesome work!
I have been following you for years, at this point it feels like you are a good friend. My wife works with autistic and special children. Kindness is her mantra. The world always can use more of it! Keep putting it out there. We try to do it every day. Peace ☮️
I think it's great you challenge folks instead of spoon feeding them the licks. If you put in the time and learn the fundamentals you can create your own licks, how cool is that!!! Anyway new sub here!
As always, an absolutely stellar vid. Guthrie hit the nail on the head when he used the word consulting. I watched handfuls and handfuls of his videos and then scheduled a private lesson. In one hour he gave me a map of exactly what I need to do to improve my playing. Do yourself a favor and book a private lesson. You will not regret it.
Love how you mentioned you're more like a "consultant" here. Not aiming in to specific notes but explaining the concepts. That's really helping me sort through 30 years of practicing the fundamentals but not always sure how to weave it all together. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain practical, usable approaches to weild and apply the tools I've studied for years. Now, off to the tip jar link🤙Mahalo!
Really good, practical stuff. The statement "playing over the chords while playing out of the chords" is the perfect summary of all the licks you presented here. Very well done.
I love your videos. I am blind and therefore unable to see what’s going on on the screen however I am able to hear what you’re doing and I am able to then figure it out on my guitar neck. Great job thank you so much for doing these videos
OK...Ive watched you a lot but your playing at the first part of this video made me want to throw my guitar in the Ocean after 50 years of playing, I dont see anyway I would ever get even close to that.....what can I say but WOW your the man !
I love the pace of the videos! It’s perfect intermediate to advance lessons. If anyone is having trouble following then slow mo the videos or only some of the video is for them
As an advanced player it is easy to follow without any further explanations. If people struggle to understand they should take some lessons to learn the basics. Thanks for the cool licks.
I'm a Metal guitar player (mostly), but LOVE these chordal, triad ideas! So useful in any genre...can't wait to throw them in my Blues trickbag! Thanks,G.T.
Understanding the forms and corresponding scales plus knowing the notes on the neck will help you see what's going on in these videos but you have to put the effort in the right place to get there folks, it a journey. 10,000 hours is no joke
Thanks for another great lesson GT! As many others have stated, your teaching style and difficulty level is so perfect for where im needing to go as a player. I think your lessons are geared towards those who are already good players and know the theory and fundamentals of music and guitar, but may just need some solid concepts to break through playing plateaus and play more comfortably outside of the routine pentatonic phrases. Please don't dare "dumb down" anything you teach. There are plenty of (too many) guitar teachers on youtube already who just teach licks and show note for note with tabs. This teaches nothing but memorizing specific licks. Your teaching is refreshing and unlocks everything, and is exactly what I and your other loyal followers are looking for. Thanks again for everything and please keep doing what you do! I'm hoping to make a trip from Memphis very soon to catch a live trio show!
I love the way you demonstrate the importance of recognizing the chords first. I am "usually" playing metal, or hard rock, but my first love was always country. You demonstrate things in a way no rocker ever has, and watching them is like starting learning with a book that has the first couple of chapters torn out. You put those chapters back in, giving that solid foundation needed to truly understand the basics. Everybody should learn to walk before we learn to dance, and you bring these important steps into the main limelight, which is EXACTLY where they should be !!!! I love your channel, and I am a regular follower. Thank you so much !!!
OMG, you said in a previous post this stuff makes your hands hurt, it has the same effect on me and I'm only watching you, I so love this stuff, what a player, just amazing.
For anyone wanting more from these videos, please keep in mind that they are free teasers for his Artist Works curriculum and private lessons. He has to earn a living. He continues to be super gracious with all the info he shares free of charge. Let's try to focus on being thankful for that and pay the man if you want to go further.
Oh boy dont know about trying to play this stuff , but i could just sit hear and watch you doing that all day man great video . bet yu thought i was going to say and watch the river flow .
Nice! Over 55k subs. Congrats. You deserve it. I think you have best guitar channel on youtube. And you have paid your dues as a musician. Your a freak of nature. No one can play with your intensity and endurance. Udaman.
I’m right there with everyone else. Learned scales, blues soloing but very generic. I always thought of the caged as very beginner, boy was I completely wrong. I saw a video with you and Papastache and changed my entire outlook on playing. Thank you! Btw your playing blew me away. The words Guthrie Trapp are a big part of my guitar talk.
I really dig all the effort you put onto making things as easy to understand as possible. I got a lot of catching up to do. So glad to be a part of this community.
Just want to say, you're a legend. We appreciate you! The guys we all love didn't have someone telling em the fingers/notes. They used their ears! That's what made em the guys we love!
Man can’t believe how much you showed me in that short lesson. Glad you didn’t take the time to zoom in and show the licks you were playing, the concept was much more important than the licks themselves. Opened a whole new world of playing licks I stole from Jerry Reed and Cornell Dupree over the 4 and 5 chords which I had no idea was that easy I hadn’t even tried just repeating the fingerings 😂. Thanks again, you’re the man.
i love the format of your videos. thank you. please don't change its like i get to just hang out with you and take in your stream of consciousness while you play.
That opening was on another level. I reacon I could practice 8 hours a day for 5 years and not be able to play that!. Great video. County bend sound awesome
It would come. There is something about practicing even for 4 hours just one day a week with small regular practice on the other days. When I was younger I used to spend 6 hours on the bass and wow I could play so many things. Now I’ve been on guitar for the last five.
@@michaelhines4600 I've been playing guitar 28 years and can't play like this!. Not my style of playing in fairness but I'm kind of getting into cleaner county style playing. Good for you with a good practice regimen though. I've always just been happy to hold my own on jam nights with the odd mildly impressive lick!
Lessons on how to conceptualize guitar licks. Man, that's straight guitar gold right there!! I have been playing many years and it's funny how some things I practiced stuck or in many cases didn't. What you are doing here is next level in terms of showing in practical terms what makes up a use case for the things one has learnt. I wish I had come across your channel sooner. Thanks and cheers
Can’t thank you enough for these lessons every one of em is gold ! My playing has gone to another level and it’s mostly because of your channel ! I’m incorporating these double stops in my blues impro and it sounds amazing ! Thank you
Thanks Guthrie. We don't need different camera angles. We can see where your hands are, we can HEAR what you're playing. Only reason I put tab on my channel is that because of the strokes I had, as I work out riffs and solos, they help me remember what I'm doing. My short term memory was affected so I have trouble making new memories. But I learned everything I have there by ear. Most of the stuff was from people I never saw play live. So you're doing us a huge favor because we don't have to work out every single hand position from scratch, thank you!
Thank you so much. For years I've practiced all of the fundamentals and just couldn't put them all together seamlessly. Your videos help me do that. Perfect comment about Guthrie's content.
I couldn't say it any better, great comment!! I'm a 'home skooler' also!! 8) --gary
Dido! It's all starting to come together in the last 5 years with the help of a few key people on RUclips, GT being one of them.
@@gtr1952 Uncle Larry and Guthrie are creating the next wave of melodic players!
Don’t start shit, and there will not be any shit. NO DISRESPECTING THIS MAN, PERIOD. His music feeds my soul.
Mind blown! Finally all comes together. Thank you for NOT posting another “put your ring finger on the 4th fret, second string . . .” video up!!

For anyone wanting more from these videos, please keep in mind that they are free teasers for his Artist Works curriculum and private lessons. He has to earn a living. He continues to be super gracious with all the info he shares free of charge. Let's try to focus on being thankful for that and pay the man if you want to go further.
Guthrie. I just love that custom RP tele you've been using. It looks and sounds awesome. Thanks for mapping these out for us brother. God bless.
Thanks man!!
This type of lesson forces me to sit down and figure it out. And this approach moves me forward.
Cool way of demonstrating, the presentation. Right on.
Udaman.
"South Alabama mean streak". I love it!! I really enjoyed your playing on the river you posted yesterday.
Thanks man!
Hanging with you in Bon Secour with your folks is on my bucket list
Wow this has been on the tip of my fingers for ten years and couldn’t quite figure it out until now. Thanks
Those were some serious opening Country Twangy Chops. If I learn any Country Chops it would be those. I'm inspired. Thanks 👍🏻
Thanks a bunch!
Great lesson and great point on using some of these OG country licks to map out the neck. Blow that roof off, bud!
Thanks man!
i love the format of your videos. thank you. please don't change its like i get to just hang out with you and take in your stream of consciousness while you play.
“I’m gonna try not to suck.” Lmao.
Good info. And yes, a video or two on amp settings, pedal use, etc would be great, too!
That’s my kind of shredding. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Appreciate you buddy.
Thank you!!
Thank you! Love your playing AND teaching style. So awesome when a great player can break down what they are thinking and explain it so well!
Thanks a lot from Norway.
You’re a big inspiration and you show the path to guitar magic…!
Thanks!!
Awesome Guthrie! Nice Tele too 👌🏻
Thank you!
Thanks a bunch!!
And for those who want to see up close, instead of watching it on the phone or computer, just cast it to your big flat screen TV!
@@evanharnett and youtube makes it possible to slow the video down while keeping everything in pitch!
@@RickMcCargar yes, the technology is there, they don't call 'em Smart TV's for nothing.
@@evanharnett youtube makes that tech available on every platform
Great video with lots of great musical ideas! Thanks very much and have a great weekend with Andy Wood and all the gang at the woodshed!!
