As a Mormon who served a mission I'm super excited for this movie. Great horror premise. (As a missionary I once entered a home with phrases written on the walls in what looked like blood). And even better that they seem to treat the topic of religion seriously. Also the two missionary leads are former LDS themselves, which should bring a lot of authenticity to the roles. Most LDS portrayals in movies miss the mark.
I'm not Mormon, but I think the movie handled its depiction of the faith pretty well. You have Hugh Grant as the titular Heretic who is trying to test their faith with various rhetorical approaches (as well as other approaches that would be spoilers). But the two missionaries held their own and the movie does not seem to come out on one side or the other.
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints too, so I would love to hear your thoughts after you see the movie. I have heard so many mixed things from other LDS people.
Fun Fact : Sophie Thatcher who played Sister Barnes, her family are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. However, she stated that she stopped practicing religion when she entered Hollywood but she does this to honour her family members who are part of the church
Damn, this was a good movie. Regarding any theological concerns or issues of disrespect towards one's faith, if your beliefs are strong, then they should be able to stand up to scrutiny 🤷🏾♂️
I loved it. This is one of those horror movies I ate up during the movie and can’t wait to watch again. I am a sucker for a good play and this could easily be adapted for the stage
People were a bit scared when A24 said it would go more comercial, but I think movies like Heretic, We live in time and Civil war is what a comercial A24 looks like
Very thought provoking movie, and it does represent both sides of the argument very well. No spoilers - but after the big reveal, I wish Hugh would have given another monologue to explain his thoughts more, the punch didn't hit as hard as it could have. Overall 4.5/5, still one of my favorite horror films in the last 5 years
For me, the punchline hit after the end of the movie; that in the end of the day, whether you have beliefs or not, our end is the same: death. Your beliefs won’t save you.
I’ve been obsessed with Hugh Grant ever since the (messy) masterpiece Cloud Atlas. Talk about range, and disappearing into all 6 roles, including a cannibal. Even with soso makeup he manages to steal almost ever since and make you get engrossed in his characters. I can’t wait to see this!
I'm looking forward to this movie mostly because I love what Hugh Grant has been doing the last few years. He really has taken that natural charm he used for RomComs and used it for interesting roles. I love that for him!
Have enjoyed the direction Hugh Grant's career has gone over the last decade re the variety of his roles/projects (A Very English Scandal, Heretic, Wonka, Dungeons & Dragons, The Gentlemen, Florence Foster Jenkins, The Undoing & Paddington 2), been great to watch his evolution as an actor from the bumbling romantic lead :)
Too much suspension of disbelief for me tbh. Starts to feel goofy for the thought provoking movie they want it to be. Would’ve been better without some questions answered,
I’ve heard some creepy things from former missionaries on the Mormon Stories Podcast. Very young adults going to strangers houses…definitely could be like a scary movie! I still have yet to see it but I’m going to this week.
Huh, it must have come out early in Ireland, I did a double bill with Heretic and Anora last Saturday. I love bottle episodes, and this movie is pretty close to that. It's brilliant that what could be plot contrivances are fundamental to the story, very smart decision making (by the filmmakers).
I am a member of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints (aka Mormon). I served a mission as well in Argentina. I can tell you first hand I had many, many experiences where I thought I was going to be murdered by a crazy person as well haha.😂 Looking forward to watching this one great review thanks!
Did a double feature last night of Heretic and Red One and in the tradition of Hideo Kojima: I really enjoyed Heretic for its strong writing, cinematography and excellent performances (Grant is magnetic every time he's on screen). I saw Red One...
1:58 I think both religious and non-religious people could either like or be offended by this movie, depending on how open-minded or defensive they are. The movie is not taking one of their sides, it's a discussion.
I like how Hugh Grant is using his usual charming persona when playing the darker villain roles he's been taking. We're so used to him as the hero that it is an extra layer challenging how we perceive a certain type of person: urban, polite, self-effacing, and handsome. His looks and demeanor make it believable that the missionaries wouldn't have realized what kind of monster he is until too late. Similar commentary as the Netflix series "You" tried to make before it got way too convoluted.
I enjoyed it for the most part. Hugh Grant kills it and the cinematography is excellent. However, I didn't love the last act. The answers were unclear (and not in a good way) and I felt it fell apart at the end. But still worth a watch if you like interesting horror with lots of philosophical discussions.
Saw this movie last night and whilst I had mixed feelings about the movie coming out of it, the more I dive into the analysis and discussion behind the story the more I enjoy it and think this is the kind of movie worth debating extensively with others. Great impersonation Dan! Spot on.
Nice review! I really enjoyed the film as well. I appreciate the tense discussions about religion, faith and skepticism. Thought the three leads did a really good job too. Hugh Grant definitely deserves a ton of praise for his performance.
I think this movie seems very personal for Sophie Thatcher who played Sister Barnes as her family are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. So you can say that she has an experience on being a mormon before
AMAZING timing, I just got back from the theater and came looking for your review. I enjoyed the heck out of it!! Not really spoilers but I can't stop thinking about the shot where Sister Paxton is going up the stairs, then it zooms out and looks like she's in the model of the house, then it pans up, and she comes out the door behind the model house. CINEMA. Also Hugh Grant meowing had me rolling
I watched your A24 rankings and really enjoyed it. I'm also glad that you enjoyed Heretic as I have been looking forward to it.However the completionist in me really wanted to know what your A24 ranking for it was. Judging by your review, I'm guessing it was low like A12/A24 but I need to know. The people need answers 😂 Really appreciate hearing your opinions on films - keep up the great work 👍
@tomleonard830 not sure if you watched his ranking but the A24 ranking was separate to the quality of the film, rather it was based on how A24 it was (judged on bleakness, how abstract the film was, and the critic/audience divide). For example, I saw the TV glow scored A23/A24 but wasn't his highest ranked A24 movie (rated on quality). If I remember correctly, his favourite A24 movie got a rating of A16/A24. It makes sense in the context of the video so if you haven't watched his full A24 ranking video I highly recommend it (if you have then please ignore this comment) 👍
I saw this movie last night with one of my former companions on my Mormon mission and we both enjoyed it. Lots of interesting discussions on belief vs. disbelief and on the various iterations of the same idea. Book of Mormon as Bob Ross Monopoly was hilarious.
Dan, Hugh has been doing a lot of roles for some time now that are very different from his 90s heartthrob roles. He was a bad guy in that series with Nicole Kidman too from a few years back. But I guess in this role he's more sinister and closer to what a true villain would be.
I thought it was wonderful. I saw it this evening and Hugh Grant was amazing. One of his best rules yet he is such a diverse actor, and the actresses were fantastic as well very well done I am very much into my religion and I loved it!
For me I loved the start. But boy did it lose me in the second and third act. Way to much was going on and I don’t think anything in the end made sense in a coherent way. It’s hard to explain without spoiling the movie.
I 100% agree. The 1st act was full of mood and eerie atmosphere was great. The 2nd act had you questioning why the movue genre had changed, and the 3rd Act was too "Scooby Doo" and convenient.
I liked it! there are a few imperfections, but it will probably make my years top 10 (most Oscar movies don't make my top 10s usually, so I'm not too eager for the reminder of the year)
Fun film, great cast, The house is obviously from Dante, even to the point to be right on the nose given well placed art collection As the descent is door after door, I’ve used similar arguments to his regarding monotheistic history over and over in my 60+ years after a youth of Dominicus Roman Catholic school in Philadelphia
As someone who's lds this movie was fantastic. A movie that makes you question your beliefs but never feels anti religious. Sophie and Chloe were great but Hugh Grant is on a different level.
I was only disappointed because of the trailer, that made it look like the movie was about two girls trapped in a house that was actually a huge maze. I love labyrinths in movies, but sadly that part only took up the last 10 minutes. That being said, I thought Hugh Grant was a blast to watch and I hope he'll get an Oscar nomination for that performance.
Hugh Grant’s transformation as an actor is greatly overstated. He essentially plays his Notting Hill character if he had succumb to the inevitable West London traditions of mid-life psychedelics and cornering young women at dinner parties. The relentless resolution of most of the film’s mildly interesting questions will unsatisfy anyone that’s spent more than a few minutes thinking about life’s ‘bigger questions’. As much as the film tried to subvert classic horror tropes it ultimately was still a ‘locked-in-a-house-with-a-creepy-old-man’ flick. It simply felt predictable and I wholeheartedly agree that the juice was not worth the squeeze.
The Heretic looks like a good movie. Plan to see it soon. With a good friend of mine. My friend is a big fan of Hugh Grant. I just like horror movies. Thank you for the information about the movie. I enjoy hearing others opinions. About a movie. If it's worth watching or not. 😄
More Dan impressions please.
YES!!! That was pretty good
I'd love to see him do Alan Partridge.
But yeah a quality 90s Grant.
Betrer than Al Pacino's London accent for sure
Does a good George Lucas if I remember right
Now i demand movie star impressions on all reviews 😂
Yes please 😂
Isn't "demand" such a strong word? sounds kind of pushy.
If Dan can do an impression of Morgan Freeman, give that guy an Oscar now! 😂
@@800Ms-k6n John Flickinger is the best Morgan Freeman impersonator.
As a Mormon who served a mission I'm super excited for this movie. Great horror premise. (As a missionary I once entered a home with phrases written on the walls in what looked like blood). Under the Banner of Heaven is the best media I've seen to depict Mormons, did that one get things right?
Fun Fact : Sophie Thatcher who played Sister Barnes, her family are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. However, she stated that she stopped practicing religion when she entered Hollywood but she does this to honour her family members who are part of the church
I'm a practicing Catholic, and thought Heretic discussed the issue with intelligence and nuance.
Oh gosh, the opening was so fabulous😂😂
no.
Damn, this was a good movie. Regarding any theological concerns or issues of disrespect towards one's faith, if your beliefs are strong, then they should be able to stand up to scrutiny 🤷🏾♂️
Your Hugh Grant is so on point when I wasn’t looking I thought it was him
Me too😂
I loved it. This is one of those horror movies I ate up during the movie and can’t wait to watch again. I am a sucker for a good play and this could easily be adapted for the stage
As an ex Mormon who doesn’t usually go for scary stuff, I enjoyed this film. Yes I’m still a bit freaked out 😂
Always great to see A24 giving us orignal movies at reasonable budgets that are released in theatres and not streaming only
People were a bit scared when A24 said it would go more comercial, but I think movies like Heretic, We live in time and Civil war is what a comercial A24 looks like
Just finished watching it...raised in a very strict household I loved it and it makes u think about the regurgitation of things.
How did this man’s house pass inspection was what I was asking myself the entire movie.
Didn’t get inspected after remodeling.
😂
The inspector probably never got to leave.
Very thought provoking movie, and it does represent both sides of the argument very well. No spoilers - but after the big reveal, I wish Hugh would have given another monologue to explain his thoughts more, the punch didn't hit as hard as it could have. For me, the punchline hit after the end of the movie; that in the end of the day, whether you have beliefs or not, our end is the same: death. Your beliefs won’t save you.
I agree! Punch line was muddled for me. Could have hit harder.
Top tier Hugh Grant impression!
Top gear*
Saw it last night, definitely a talker kind of movie. Where the writing add so much tension.
Amazing that Hugh did the intro for Dan
I’ve been obsessed with Hugh Grant ever since the (messy) masterpiece Cloud Atlas. Talk about range, and disappearing into all 6 roles, including a cannibal. Even with soso makeup he manages to steal almost ever since and make you get engrossed in his characters. I can’t wait to see this!
Cloud Atlas = Master Piece...IMO.
I'm looking forward to this movie mostly because I love what Hugh Grant has been doing the last few years. He really has taken that natural charm he used for RomComs and used it for interesting roles. I love that for him!
As a Brit myself, that wasn’t the worst British accent, so fair play. 😅👍
I'll take "wasn't the worst" from a true Brit!
In fairness...is a lot easier for a Brit to do American Accent than for an American do a Brit accent.
Better than Anne Hathaway in One Day 😂
Have enjoyed the direction Hugh Grant's career has gone over the last decade re the variety of his roles/projects (A Very English Scandal, Heretic, Wonka, Dungeons & Dragons, The Gentlemen, Florence Foster Jenkins, The Undoing & Paddington 2), been great to watch his evolution as an actor from the bumbling romantic lead :)
Apparently he was also initially cast as Zeus in Kaos but dropped out.
I never cared for Hugh Grant in his 90s rom com era. However, this varied and fun direction is great
Too much suspension of disbelief for me tbh. Starts to feel goofy for the thought provoking movie they want it to be. Would’ve been better without some questions answered,
Dan nice try on your impression of Hugh Grant, hit and miss but the way you said “me?” at the very end I’m was *chef’s kiss*
HG was awesome in The Gentleman playing that slezeball
Glad to hear your thoughts, Dan! I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I’ve heard some creepy things from former missionaries on the Mormon Stories Podcast. Very young adults going to strangers houses…definitely could be like a scary movie! I still have yet to see it but I’m going to this week.

Kudos on the Grant impression, Dan! lol. I loved it.
I am a member of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints (aka Mormon). I served a mission as well in Argentina.
I can tell you first hand I had many, many experiences where I thought I was going to be murdered by a crazy person as well haha.😂
Looking forward to watching this one great review thanks!
Did a double feature last night of Heretic and Red One and in the tradition of Hideo Kojima: I really enjoyed Heretic for its strong writing, cinematography and excellent performances (Grant is magnetic every time he's on screen). I saw Red One...
Love the opening, per usual😂
1:58 I think both religious and non-religious people could either like or be offended by this movie, depending on how open-minded or defensive they are. The movie is not taking one of their sides, it's a discussion.
His role as a villain in the Bridget jones movies was already a nice surprise, for me who basically grew up watching his rom com.
It is interesting the 2 more entertaining films of the year have a strong religious backdrop. Did not expect that 😅
The only rom com I remember HG in was Micky Blue Eyes... Or was it the guy who protrayed Iron Man ???
Spot on Impression Dan!
A new A24 horror film approved by Dan 😄 I'm excited for this one and i've been waiting for a while😉
I like how Hugh Grant is using his usual charming persona when playing the darker villain roles he's been taking. Chloe East is also an ex-Mormon afaik.
The monopoly bit did have me thinking ‘oh Phillip’ but that’s cos I’ve written Blanc/Phillip fic that has them playing it.
That impression has me dying
Love Hugh Grant's villian era.
Easily in my top 3 films of the year!
AMAZING timing, I just got back from the theater and came looking for your review.
I enjoyed the heck out of it!!
Not really spoilers but
I can't stop thinking about the shot where Sister Paxton is going up the stairs, then it zooms out and looks like she's in the model of the house, then it pans up, and she comes out the door behind the model house. CINEMA.
Also Hugh Grant meowing had me rolling
I was surprised by Hugh Grant's range when I watched Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre. He's pretty great
I watched your A24 rankings and really enjoyed it. He said top tier. I'm guessing at least A16 or higher.
@tomleonard830 not sure if you watched his ranking but the A24 ranking was separate to the quality of the film, rather it was based on how A24 it was (judged on bleakness, how abstract the film was, and the critic/audience divide). Sleezy paparazzi Fletcher in Guy Ritchies' "The Gentlemen" was one of his best performances and it's also against the type.
A movie that respects religion AND non-religion?? Brilliant!!
Actually that’s a pretty good 90s Grant impression. I’m impressed. ❤😂😊
Saw this last weekend (came out in the UK) and absolutely loved it. It’s chilling, suspenseful and Grant is terrifying
Thanks for the video Dan! I'll check this out!
I saw this movie last night with one of my former companions on my Mormon mission and we both enjoyed it. Lots of interesting discussions on belief vs. disbelief and on the various iterations of the same idea. Book of Mormon as Bob Ross Monopoly was hilarious.
3 1/2 hours until the work day is done and I’m in the theater watching this!
Really solid Grant impression Dan that was hilarious

Fantastic poster art, too.
I thought it was wonderful. I saw it this evening and Hugh Grant was amazing. One of his best rules yet he is such a diverse actor, and the actresses were fantastic as well very well done I am very much into my religion and I loved it!
Loved the impression and the review.
great impression!
Impressions. Well, that was unexpected 🤣
Haha brilliant intro! I’m looking forward to seeing this movie
Already have tickets to see it Tuesday(discount ticket day at my local theater)
Yes, I want to hear a Trump impression! And I always think of SNL’s Hugh Grant Impression, from those auditions tapes.
Solely because of that impression, I am going to like this video.😂😂
quite good, and completely unrelated but i will never enter Hugh Grant's home
Spot on impression, Dan. Spot on.
Whoa, I was definitely not expecting a see it now rating. I'll def see it today or tomorrow then.
Already saw it twice yesterday definitely liked it more the second time.
For me I loved the start. But boy did it lose me in the second and third act. Way to much was going on and I don’t think anything in the end made sense in a coherent way. It’s hard to explain without spoiling the movie.

Great impression!!🤣🤣🤣💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
as an ex mormon and huge horror movie fan this is wild to me, feels specifically targeted at me and I cant wait to see it, great coverage dan
Had me guessing the whole movie. Hugh Grant was perfect choice in this movie. All 3 actors made this movie
I liked it! there are a few imperfections, but it will probably make my years top 10 (most Oscar movies don't make my top 10s usually, so I'm not too eager for the reminder of the year)
Fun film, great cast,

Fun fact: Sophie Thatcher played Drash, the girl in the Space Vespa gang in "The Book of Boba Fett" 😁
That fact was more fun than the series.
I didn't know she was in this series till I looked it up. I mostly known and recognised her in Yellowjackets because she got a big part on that
Awesome! I’ll go see it today.
Love the Jaws reference in the film
I saw it Tuesday & really liked it. Well done. 😊😊
Saw it last night absolutely loved it
Great impression agvthe top Dan!
As someone who's lds this movie was fantastic. A movie that makes you question your beliefs but never feels anti religious. Sophie and Chloe were great but Hugh Grant is on a different level.

This was an amazing atheist movie for 90%, then it doesn’t follow through and gives an ambiguous ending to make it more palatable for the masses.
Grant was quite good in the very underrated comedy Dungeons and Dragons.
Hugh Grant’s transformation as an actor is greatly overstated. He essentially plays his Notting Hill character if he had succumb to the inevitable West London traditions of mid-life psychedelics and cornering young women at dinner parties.

I thought he was phenomenal in The Gentlemen and I cant wait to check out his performance in this
Scariest cardigan/glasses combination in years.
Good morning Dan.
Thumbs up on impression alone
Fantastic movie! As a Christian, I thought the script was incredibly smart and did a good job of not being sacrilegious or preachy
Anyone who knew anything about Hugh Grant before he hit it big in 90s romantic comedies isn't surprised at his range
Thanks gor the review
I just saw Heretic. I loved it. Good psychological horror film.
i saw this movie last night and i loved it, after leaving the theater it really had me thinking about my own believes. 10/10
Former Mormon here. Super excited to see it.
Come on Dan, give us the numerical A score.
The Heretic looks like a good movie. Plan to see it soon. With a good friend of mine. My friend is a big fan of Hugh Grant. I just like horror movies. Thank you for the information about the movie. I enjoy hearing others opinions. About a movie. If it's worth watching or not. 😄
