Throughly enjoyed it. What got me about Hugh Grant’s performance was that even though you knew his motives were sinister; even extremely late in the film, because of his charm and his demeanour I couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe he’s just a misunderstood eccentric and it was all going to be ok.
Sister Paxton was my favorite & stole the show for me. She was genuinely bubbly & fun!🙏🥰🌟 Mr. Reed: "With great power, comes great responsibility." Sister Paxton: "Spider-Man!"😂
The acting of all three main characters is absolutely stand-out. So good by each of them. Really enjoyed the cerebral nature of "Heretic" and how you can read the ending in so many different ways depending on what you bring to the film yourself (in terms of belief, faith, optimism--or lack thereof, etc.).
There are a few ways to take the ending (SPOILERS OBV) w/ the butterfly... she sees the butterfly, but then it is gone. This could be taken a few ways... one, alluding to the butterfly dream Reed mentions earlier, suggesting that possibly she is in a dream and did not escape... two, Paxton mentions earlier in the film that she would like to return as a butterfly after dying to touch her loved ones so perhaps this is Barnes coming to touch her... three, it is just evidence of Paxton's ability to see the beauty in things, just as she relates, in the opening scene, to something strong and beautiful in the p0rn she watched, she feels enlightened by her experience and how it strengthened her belief... four, the darker side of that is believing that this tendency is from her programming and that this experience has opened her eyes to the cruelty of people and this is why the butterfly disappears... all these, and more, are valid
@@Birdland808 There is also the reading of the film that Barnes never "revives," and imagining her doing so and everything that follows from that (including the basement escape and the butterfly vision) is just that--a vision. A dreamlike hallucination that Paxton has in her dying state. Because, in the end, Paxton decides to cling to her faith. She has passed the test (of belief vs. disbelief). I think you allude to that in your response, but I've seen that theory as well (the theory that Barnes never reawakens).
@@honeymoonavenue97 not easier as in gore/horror elements. I meant easier on the mind, so won’t have you thinking or make you concentrate as much as Heretic which is very heavily dialogue based. When I say easy to watch horror it refers to things that require less brain power.
Hi Gremlin. What did you think the film was trying to get across to the audience, apart from the horror element? It had lots of intellectual content, whereas 'The Substance' for me was more of a titillation and exploitation film, made for teenage boys, with nothing particularly revolutionary to say...

I love introspective horror films like this.

Yessss loved the script so much. Comparing this to saw is wild lol I personally don’t see it :/ love both films so much
Thanks GG, will now go and watch it with my daughter!
I disagree and think the ending with one of the character’s experience and the butterfly pointed to a kind of religious proof. I loved this one!

It was an average film but the performances especially Hugh Grant and the Nuns phenomenal!!!
gremlingirl,
you are BEAUTIFUL.
@@m081113 thank you so much!!
Saw is NOT an “easier watch.” You good? It’s so gory and disturbing.

I've watched this movie twice now. Mr. Reed is a polygamist.
