    As a former member of the Mormon church, I have been eagerly awaiting this film. I have to say that I agree almost completely with your review. They kind of lost me when they brought in the "prophet". The worst part of that to me was, the bodies were presumably switched when they were at the top of the stairs yelling for the other missionary who was looking for them. Mr. Reed would have no idea that that man would have shown up to allow this distraction.
    It showcases the very dangerous situations that the Mormon church, and I'm sure others, put their missionaries in. Generally speaking, Mormon missionaries are kids...18-20 years old. There are all kinds of horror stories of things that have happened to the missionaries. I'm sure many of them would make for some good movies!
    The two actresses are former members of the Mormon church as well. I loved the fact that they were able to bring in accurate mannerisms and language which made it very authentic. On the whole, I enjoyed the movie. I just wish it had stayed in the same vein that it started with.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the religious debates in the film. That kind of stuff gets me going. I didn't think about it at first, but I do see that her piecing everything together was a stretch. I also questioned how they didn't hear the bodies being switched. From the table and chair being moved, an emaciated person moving a dead body, opening the trap door, the thud from the body being thrown in (because she's be too weak to carry a body down a ladder), and then everything being put back together. How did neither of them hear that? All in all, I did enjoy the film and would recommend it. 3.5/5.

      Man, if you haven't seen The Undoing on HBO, it's incredible. It's Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman as a New York power couple, he's a world-renowned pediatric oncologist who's accused of murdering his mistress. Hugh Grant gives one of the best performances I've ever seen towards the end of that show.

  • @NathanHassall
    @NathanHassall 4 дня назад +2

    the movie really fell apart at the end considering how detail was seemingly supposed to be such a large element to this ... the part where the two slave wifes traded places how can we believe the slave woman who can barely walk moved the table lifted a heavy door picked up a dead body somehow brought her down the chute and then carried her about 15 feet in the tunnel climbed back up shut the door moved the table back in place all in about 30 seconds (with nobody hearing anything) Yeah no sorry...this was pretty stupid...also why or how she threw up blueberry pie after she pretended to be resurrected when she wasn't even the one who ate the pie is kinda stupid after the fact. The movie was pretty good leading up to that point but those last few scenes destroyed the momentum they built up to that point.

    • @DonPetrushka
      @DonPetrushka 2 дня назад +1

      Yep, those basement chicks ruined the movie. They couldn't have made up a dumber scene. Considering such clever narrative that we could see at the beginning, most of the basement scenes paled in comparison. Like if they switched the movies, from a good psychological thriller to some cheap аss B-horror

  • @ani_mcall
    @ani_mcall 16 дней назад +5

    I liked your thoughts:) I agree that the basement didn’t feel as strong as the first part of the movie, but the ending…I think the butterfly was a clue that Sister Paxton actually died, because there’s no way the other sister survived the throat slash and the rest was just the crazy stuff our brains do when we die, “going into the light”, and as a viewer we have to choose belief or disbelief about what actually happened. The nature of reality butterfly 🦋. And the phone still said “no signal” even when she went outside…

    I agree. I thought the movie fell apart closer to the end. Sister Paxton noticed the body was in the wrong position after they came back and she followed Sisters Barne’s order to challenge him.
    The ending was put together in a Scooby Doo way but I think it was in the theme of control. Paxton had faith in Barnes even after death.

  • @dja-bomb6397
    @dja-bomb6397 14 дней назад +2

    Everyone is a critical thinker when it comes to topics that are not precious to their core identity such as religion. That's why Paxton had no problem putting the pieces together after Barnes had died.
    Also, consider that the ending was meant to be intentionally ambiguous, because as with the general motif from the film, when left with unknowns it becomes easier to believe whatever makes you feel comfortable. Create your own explanation as to what the ending really meant. For me, I think the fact that the butterfly did not fly away but rather disappeared tells me that sister Paxton had been having a near-death hallucination and Barnes had never woken up; She had died, and so did both herself and Mr. Read. But, like I said, interpret it anyway you like. That's what I think makes the ending brilliant.

    • @razorbeard6970
      @razorbeard6970 16 дней назад +1

      Come on, this movie won't give people any ideas they wouldn't have otherwise. There have been missionaries going on these for 2 years for how long? The face of the church in current media is almost exclusively young, attractive women. The church is behind this film...what does that say about how comfortable they are about that possibility? It's a risk they take to serve God and they do have many safeguards this film may or may not realistically depict.

    As someone who grew up a Mormon and a skeptic, I’m so excited to see this. Missionaries to me always seemed intimidating, but the older I’ve gotten the more I see them as young and clueless 20-somethings. I don’t see them often, but I’ve made it clear as long as they don’t try to give me lessons, they’ll have a hot meal and unmonitored internet access. I was already baptized years ago, so it’s at no loss to them.

    It was very disturbing because at the end I felt like the movie was trying to make you question if religion is just make believe or if it’s real.
    The butterfly scene was chilling to everybody in the theater was frozen.
    My favorite part was when he was breaking down how all these gods were born “December 25th” way before Jesus Christ was here, yet here we are people still celebrating “Christmas “ for Jesus … like gurl 🙃

Very similar premise to Martyrs. Allegedly the directors say the ending is apart of the twist. When the old lady described her near death experience, that’s what we see after Mr.Reed and baby girl are bleeding in the end. She is going on to the other side… so the friend coming back wasn’t really happening…. idk… definitely a lot to think about.

I kind of wished it really really leaned more into the simulation theory but, it was very obvious it was a trick - I wished it went harder on that and made it more difficult to disprove -- it seemed like all of a sudden Cloe East's character instantly transformed into his intellectual equal, without earning it fully at that point. But I guess it was to show that she was smarter than she seemed, and the cutesy bubbly stuff was more out of respect for others, and not challenging their authority? William Friedkin's movie Bug did that very well by the end, where I kind of felt like I was losing my mind a bit hehe, I feel like I could of got there if he started going off about some really strong conspiracy theory, also I wished there was more comedy, there were little chuckles here and there, but I wish Hugh Grant got a bit goofier.

    Sophie reminded me if Anya Taylor Joy and Emily Browning had a baby. I gave this movie a 5/10. I was also a little hungover when watching it so I was getting easily annoyed. 1. When that bully girl pulls down her skirt and is not punched in the tits by anyone? 2. They weren't scrambling to kill this dude 3. The sudden change in Paxton's character from meek follower to Sherlock Holmes Velma brainy final girl. This is a slow burn religious film almost like The VVitch, however, the faith shown here seems surface level while in The VVitch feels so real and lived in.

    Did you say that you took the butterly ending as that Chloes character dying?? Because to me that was the other character signaling to her that shes okay on the other side, but it disappearing so fast was so she can still leave doubt.

    If you guys watch Small Things Like These, begging y'all to read the novella it's based on first. It stayed true to the book, the movie is very well received in the UK and Ireland probably because they're familiar with the story. Y'all need a bit of context to fully get it.

    It was ok. I wanted the house to be more of a maze where if they did the wrong thing aka sin they would get to the next room and be given another choice until only one would be left and would have to do something unspeakable to get out which affects her mind adversely... and she ends up in an insane asylum or she deletes herself.

    I thought a better story would have been that Hugh Grant had captured a demon (a lá "The Twilight Zone" episode "The Howling Man) and was going to sacrifice the girls to the one true religion of Satan.

      That would have made a better horror story. For a second I did think it was going to turn out Huge Grant's character was some kind of satanists. Then when he brought out the woman prophet then I thought he was going to claim some ancient matriarchal religion as the one true religion especially because of the whole Monopoly thing being originally invented by a woman.
      But philosophically I can see why this movie went the way it did but ultimately I think it should have done more to counter his viewpoint. Most people are going to walk away thinking it was the message the movie wanted to get across despite the fact that he was a complete psychopath.

      I thought maybe satanism/rebellion/atheism kinda spin was going to be it. Then I thought just as there is variants of Jesus there is also Satan so I don’t think that would have been it.
