They did fill the colosseum with water and boats (not sharks though)! It was called a Naumachia, although it surely was less epic than what's portrayed in the film. And on the topic of hygiene, the romans were way more clean than people usually think. They had public bathouses, indoor water heating, plumbing, etc. They also used perfumed oils and all sorts of oinments! Great reaction guys, I loved your facial expressions xD
I love binging you two after a few weeks. I love Nick’s encyclopedic fan boy moments then Joseph’s “oh… anyways” 😂. I can easily picture you both in a theater
I agree that Paul Mescal's character did not seem rageful at all. Initially he kinda did but that goes away quickly. He gets a chance to kill the general who murdered his girlfriend and he doesn't. I guess at that point he knows the Acacius is his mom's husband but if he was really rageful he wouldn't care. He'd be like "sorry mom, get yourself a new boyfriend." Throughout most of the movie he's really calm, almost stoic like he really doesn't care what happens.
Mescal felt rather miscast for me, he seemed too quiet and not commanding/violent enough. He didn’t captivate me, so the film never really stepped up for me. I also felt bad for Denzel in those robes, it seemed he was always readjusting the sleeves
Well, its Ridley Scott isn't it? Why depict Macrinus as coming from a well to do family of Provincial Romans from North Africa when you can depict him as a former slave?

Honestly, Hollywood almost got me with this. Initially the trailer swept me completely off my feet but slowly I began to find those nostalgic feelings leaving and there wasn’t anything else to grasp onto. Bummed but not surprised to see another soulless big budget movie.
The taller brother was straight, the shorter brother was gay. There's a scene when they first meet Lucius where they have their sex slaves next to them and I noticed the taller one had women and the shorter one had men. I did think they were really creepy but the betrayal seemed to come out of nowhere. It was obvious the taller brother was the more mature, dominant one but prior to the murder scene there was nothing that made my think they were antagonistic toward each other.
This movie had no meat in the bones. The filmmaker missed an opportunity by not fully telling Denzel character's backstory. And it could've easily have been done if some of those flashbacks were cut. The prince only showed rage when he told his mommy how mad he was at her for not coming to find him. 😂
THIS MOVIE HAS EVERYTHING: CGI monkeys, the Don King of Rome, a woman who is not really in control but "she's there", injectibles and hair dye, stage 3 syphilis, a monkey as a vice-president, CGI ships, creepy baboons, more CGI...BUT NOT A GOOD PLOT. Look at the top ten films at the box office this year. They are all sequels, prequels or remakes. The reason why Hollywood makes so many sequels is because that's what the majority of movie-goer audiences like.
Joseph getting into the the murky waters, in a separate colosseum spectacle...only to question, why the Prince didn't get in touch with his Mom ... 😉That's the 'heart' of the story your comments underlined well☺
Either one of you would have been a more convincing main actor than the bloke they hired. Assuming you enjoy actually acting unlike the disinterested character they put in front of us. Although the two of you sound deflated and bored by this film. A small part of all of us died watching this film. It’s that bad.
Overall the spectacle is good, I wasn't bored, but there were drawbacks. The downsides (spoilers): > > > > - since Lucius was Maximus' son, he made him at about the same time as his son with his wife, this makes Maximus unfaithul to his wife , whom he had allegedly loved so much in G1.” -final fight with Macrinus very below expectations, he was not a worthy opponent for Lucius, an old guy long past his fighting days and splendor -it would have been nice if the public found out who “Hanno ”was before the scene where he was supposed to defend his mother. Then they could rebel and the scene would have gained depth and epicness. Just imagine how great this scene would be if the Master of Ceremony announced who will defend Lucilla. I'd totally rewatch. - Too many of these scenes from the afterlife, on the boat with his wife was a bit cringe. And generally why take revenge on the general if the wife was killed in a fair fight? It did not have the impact of the murder of Maximus' wife, who was a civilian and had been additionally 'graped'. (after listening to your review, I hear Joseph made a similar point) - Lucius had weak prep speeches, except for the final one. Plus as someone else noted in the comments: taking without harm a lot of punches with spiked gloves, or scratching off his hands paddling a few days before the fight by Lucius, were stupid.
I liked the movie. Lucius already knows about his mother, but is unwilling to save himself because he's willing to give up his life for revenge. I thought the film made this point when he tells his mother to leave. He's torn between loyalty to his fellow gladiators and the place of his birth. It introduces moral complexity and gives him a fascinating arc. In fact, most of the characters are forced to make difficult choices which is what elevated the story for me. I do think Mescal needed more scenes with Pascal to really flesh out their relationship, but pitting them against eacother in the arena was a nice twist. Even Denzel had a fascinating backstory as a former slave trying to avenge his family but who succumbs to earthly temptations, making him an interesting counterweight to the main character. Also liked the doctor character who remains a slave, but still finds a way to give his life purpose. The twin emperors didn't bother me. Their insecurity and lack of masculinity is what drives their military ambitions and lust for power. Similar to Joaquin Pheonix in the original but more over the top. I went with the expectation that this would be an elevated melodrama that asks you to suspend your disbelief and was mostly entertained. The action is fast paced and sufficiently bloody. I will say that the major deaths happen too quickly but it was fine.
I liked this movie. But, I agree, the plot was too simplistic and confusing at the same time. The overthrow of the crazy twins seemed way too simple. And, I really need to look up the armies of the Roman era. They were going to overthrow the empire with just 5,000 men? And the army of the empire had only about 6,000?
I love how you don’t use any character names. So it sounds like you are talking about a messy party you went to 😂😂😂 “…there’s some gossipy ass housekeeper…”
I loved this one. The action was good and Denzel Washington was spectacular. He played a metaphor for the sins of Rome coming back to haunt them. "A plague on both your houses."
You should watch I, Claudius, it does so much with so little. First episodes are slow but once it gets going you get career-best performances from Brian Blessed, Sian Phillips, John Hurt and Jacobi. Also two great very-against-type appearances by Jonathan Rhys-Davies and Patrick Stewart. Jacobi was also in Gladiator 1, although as I didn't remember him before watching I Claudius I think it is also a pretty nothing part
I liked the first Gladiator movie and I have it on Blu-ray so I can't go watch this because, just like the Joker 2 movie did, it would ruin my memory of the first one.
I feel like this is just like the show i watched on peacock, Those Who Are About to Die. They had a water filled arena too. Its like there's too much of this being done

A fantasy movie with vaguely Roman costumes and fictional characters who happen to have the same names as some actual romans. Macrinus wasn't a former slave or a sub-Saharan African, he came from a well to do Roman family of Berber origin. Caracalla was older than Geta, hated and eventually murdered his brother, was half North African and a tough, bear of a man. His nickname 'Caracalla' was never used outside his immediate family. I'm not sure where the ridiculously complex fortification the ships were attacking is supposed to be, but it looks more like something from a 90's platform video game than a real walled city in the Classical period. But apart from that it was quite good. Well, actaully, it wasn't...

So... Gladiator 2 literally "jumped the shark" 🦈 😮🎉
10:24 this movie can be described as "Been Thur, Done That"
The fall of Ridley Scott... I hope Denzel got paid well.
