Yep, one of the best films of recent years for me. There's something so effective that's equal parts enchanting and disturbing about the characters' descent into madness, on top of the fantastic acting and cinematography. But I get why people don't like it as much
When Dan describes college students filmmaking - “Where all of the characters walk in slow motion to music, everybody drops F bombs, because that’s how everybody knows you’re an adult and edgy” I can’t help but to think about Zack Synder loool 😂😂😂
Hardly a rant. Dan simply understands the RUclips comment section. Not everyone will have seen his other videos and even if they have there are those who will still argue about how names are spelled or pronounced because the comment section loves few things more than nitpicking. Seth Meyers has created a weekly series based on that certainty. If he says the name he has to show the evidence for why he's saying it that way or he'll get called out. He probably still will but this could deter some people which will prevent Dan from completely losing his mind when he reads through the comments.
I will always have A24 to thank for getting me into modern horror, I never liked horror that much in the past, but movies like hereditary really made me fall in love with horror, a lot of the movies remind me of the reflective and psychological horror movies from the late 70s and early 80s
I really love how you’ve done this video - love the inclusion of critic scores compared to audience scores, etc. Great overviews of everything and details mentioned - brilliant!
Hopefully if a studio like NEON can grow to be another new A24 style studio we can get that list as well Dan! I would probably also have to agree that Hereditary is my #1. Man Green Room is really a frightening thriller and I was really so scared when we're in a group of neo nazi and Patrick Stewart performance is absolutely unbelievable and frighting
I personally think the premise, the casting of Patrick Stewart, and portraying the skinheads as a truly formidable force were scary but the execution left me feeling very lacking with too many characters killed in a dissapointing faction.
An incredible video! A few random comments. Trying to judge the bleakness of some of these, specifically I Saw the TV Glow, is a tricky task. For sure it's at least 5/8, but on second watch, I found it easier to see the hopeful ending that JS intended. There's plenty of reason to believe that escape happens, which is a glimmer of hope in the midst of the dark. As a non-binary person it seems to me almost impossible that anyone would miss the trans allegory, but I know some people have which is wild to me. Still, as with your review in May, I think you do a really good job expressing taste, quality, and "this won't be for everyone" ness about this movie. I do think Beau is Afraid is a horror movie. The last act, including the attic part, is certainly in line with body horror and the horror aesthetics of Roy Andersson who Aster cites frequently as a favorite (check out Songs from the Second Floor; it's brilliant). Dream Scenario...not so much. I'm not sure that ones a horror movie, but I could see it. BUT if Dream Scenario is considered a horror movie, why isn't The Zone of Interest?!? (which I would score: Bleak: 8/8, Abstract: 4/8, and I'd have to look up critic gap). But there are a lot of movies like it--say, Come and See for example--that usually aren't labeled horror when they definitely are. Also did Love Lies Bleeding not count? That surprises me. I loved that an hour into this video on A24 horror movies you still dutifully provided plot summaries of movies that everyone watching an hour long video on A24 horror will have already seen. And yay for Saint Maud finally getting its flowers! My list has The Witch and I Saw the TV Glow at the top, and then most of your top 10 in a slightly different order to fill out the top 10.
That was an excellent film. Jennifer Ehle is mesmerizing and I was really taken with Morfydd Clark too. Plot wise, I knew where it was headed from the start but it was just so perfectly atmospheric and well executed.
I like your dedication in the videos. It's not just about listing your favorites but there is also a quite interactive system behind it. Greetings from Egypt.
Dang! I wasn't expecting Under the Skin to be so high on your list. When people ask me what my favorite movie is I always preface by saying "I don't recommend it..."
I'm glad that you enjoyed "I Saw the TV Glow" more on a rewatch. It's my favorite film of the year so far, I absolutely adore it, but I get that it isn't for everyone. Edit: Also! Whenever I talk about Saint Maud irl I never meet anyone who has seen it, it's so so good. Watch it!
Loved, loved Saint Maud. Jennifer Ehle is utterly brilliant (as usual) Clark is also someone to keep an eye on, and the entire atmosphere overcame the fact that I pretty much could guess the plot from the beginning. Just a well done movie that is less about religion than it is about why people turn towards fanaticism when reality has let them down.
That line about Men being “The only movie for you” is the funniest thing Dan has ever said in a video that I’ve seen and I’ve been watching his shit for at least six years 😂 never change, dude!
I had to scan the comments for this! What a shame. It should’ve been thumbed to the top! 😅 Such a hilarious aside from Dan, and if you’ve seen the film, entirely on point.
Whenever a film is released by A24, my interest is peaked. I just saw Heretic, another A24 release and it definitely was interesting. Thanks for the breakdown, Dan. Fantastic as always!
Hereditary is absolutely in my top 5 favorite movies of all time and I couldn’t agree more about Toni’s performance. There’s just something so compelling about this movie, it’s exceptional.
This is one of your very best videos Dan, I enjoyed every minute of it! It was worth it just to finally get you to watch Men and hear your take on it. I didn't really care for it either, but the ending was brain-meltingly weird (I thought about it a bunch recently while watching The Substance). Agree with Talk to Me and Green Room being as high as they are, both absolutely brilliant!
Asidee from The Lighthouse and Hereditary which I both love, I haven't really liked many A24 horror films, so it was very interesting hearing the perspective of someone who clicks with so many of them. Great video!
'Beau is Afraid' is a classic example of a studio greenlighting a vanity project to a director who has delivered success. Vanity projects typically fail. I think Aster has learned that you're only as successful as your last film, I predict his next film will be a return to form....Oz Perkins is a beast!
Hi Dan, found your channel today by following YT's suggestion to watch this ranking. What a gret work! Of course I have another opinion in one or another point. (e.g. "Midsommar" to be 2nd after "Hereditary" and "The Witch" on 3rd place. ^^) But it was great to hear your understandable arguments in that enjoyable and informative way. Thank you very much. (Greetings from Germany + Sub)
I think "Lamb" is one of the best films of the past few years, but it's not really a horror film. I think if you watch it expecting a horror film, you'll be pretty bored. It's more of a folkloric/mythic tragic drama.
I didn't have to watch this to know Dan put Hereditary as number 1. Dan I have been keeping up with you for years(even screen junkies plus-i was a member). Love you dude DAN YOU ARE MOTHER
My review of hereditary is that it was so so frickin good but also traumatic that I’ve never forgotten it and never been able to watch it again. I will forever be searching for its equal
This content is wildly rich and unbelievably put together. I can’t emphasize enough how influential and necessary Dan Murrell is for the movie space. The true heir to the good ol’ ebert and roeper days of the birth of the podcast. Thank you so much for all your effort and dedication to your craft!
This is an incredibly valuable video for me because I'm not a huge horror fan, I need several reasons to be convinced to watch one. (My partner was surprised I wanted to see Longlegs but it was because of your review Dan!) So now I have a nice short list of new A24 movies to see-thank you! (Also the I AM YOUR MOTHER legit jump scared me)
I think Willem has got to be one of the best actors ever to act, it’s been amazing to see him just flourish in every kind of role possible especially in the last decade. His comforting presence in The florida Project to his crazy performance in the lighthouse he is just a joy to watch. I want to see an older women find this kind of success because i think it’s time!
Shocked by your number one! Shocked!!...well..not that shocked LOL. I will never forgive the academy for not rewarding Toni Collette with AT LEAST a nom for best actress!
1 and 2 is interchangeable between Hereditary and Climax. Climax can easily claim number one, it's a very unhollywood film that takes us on a wild immersive horrific ride. The horror is that this could happen if drinks get spiked at a party. The casual reveal at the end is shocking considering the horror the audience witnessed.
Appreciate the effort and willpower that went into this. I broadly agree with your list (from the ones I've seen) except I'd put In Fabric in the top 20 and take Talk to Me off list entirely (I hated it and because A24 didn't distribute it in the UK, I get to remove it on a technicality).
I am beyond grateful a studio like A24 is out there giving people massive creative control to make extremely interesting films. That said, there are very few A24 films I enjoy whatsoever. I have a genuine disdain for more movies produced by A24 than films I have enjoyed at the bare minimum. I dont think this is bad per say. I'll always go and see a movie that seems interesting, and A24 films are almost always interesting and they do what a movie should always do, impact you on an emotional level. The problem is that emotion for me is anger, annoyance, and sometimes hatred
Thank you so much for this, Dan. I know, and everyone can see, that you went above and beyond on this. Now I'm going to rewatch Hereditary for the 10th time.
Fun video with a concise and well thought out small recab/review for every movie. The A24 scale is a great idea, although I think you should have found a more fitting third category. I never felt the audience/critic divide being a A24 staple... Thank You!
I just watched I Saw The TV Glow yesterday for Halloween. It was very good. And if it's the most A24 a movie can get, i guess i should just stop there. :)
THIS right here is what this channel GOLD Dan. Ridiculous chart your not getting anywhere else that actually answers something you've always didn't know you want to know? CHECK! Rediculous scoring system that makes me smile everytime you say it? CHECK! The fact that you stick to your opinions no matter what? CHECK! Hereditaty is a movie I'm STILL thinking about every now and again all these years later and is in my top 3 horror recommendations to this day when anyone asks. Thank you Dan.
I completely agree with the top 3. Hereditary will go down as one of the most influencial horror films of all time, Talk To Me was such a great horror film that feels so 21st century, and I had forgotten about how good Green Room is and your breakdown makes me actually want to go back and watch it again.
I’m so happy that Hereditary got #1. Literally my favorite horror movie of all time. Saw it at the movies twice. In my top five of all time favorite movies of any genre.
The ranking of a scale of A24 is such a Dan thing to do and I love it.
I love it so much! It's great!

Love this overview.
I hope you use the “How A24 is it?” metric for all A24 releases going forward.
Dan, I don’t even need to watch this to know that you have Hereditary as #1 and that you’ll mention Toni Collette was robbed of a nomination haha.

I disagree on In Fabric. Peter Strickland is a master of suspense and atmosphere. Love his films, original, fresh and hypnotic.
This is a HALLOWEEN miracle... wait, that's not the right quote, but it's the feeling I feel. Thanks Dan!
The Witch is one of my favorite movies of all time
I hate that the thriller genre is now confused as being the horror genre. These are 95% thriller/suspense movies but NOT horror. Imho
I love it when you drop these longform projects. Happy Halloween, Dan!
Kudos for including Climax
Dang! I wasn't expecting Under the Skin to be so high on your list. When people ask me what my favorite movie is I always preface by saying "I don't recommend it..."
Awesome ranking video. I rarely bother with that format but this one was perfect and matched mine too so good to know, we've got similar tastes!
Top 5 Memorable Spaghetti Scenes:
1. Gummo
2. Killing of a Sacred Deer
3. Lady and the Tramp
4. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
5. Elf
Seven. That's the spaghetti scene to end all spaghetti scenes
Gummo is like an A24 precursor.
"What we do in the shadows" would like a word
@@TheEsperKing1 Sorry, that one is disqualified. The scene is question concerns bisgetti, not spaghetti
Wow Dan! You put so much work into this review and I never clicked faster on a video. Thank you for the legwork you saved us and well done my friend!
Such a hilarious aside from Dan, and if you’ve seen the film, entirely on point.
I slept on "The Blackcoat's Daughter" but now I'm going to have to check it out. Outstanding work, as always. Thanks, Dan!!
Incredible work here Dan! Can’t believe you watched all of these for one episode!
Saint Maud is definitely on my list to watch. Thanks for doing this video Dan, great stuff!
Whenever a film is released by A24, my interest is peaked. I just saw Heretic, another A24 release and it definitely was interesting. Thanks for the breakdown, Dan. Fantastic as always!
Beau Is Afraid is a cinematic masterpiece. I honestly get why people don’t/wouldn’t like it, but MAN. What a journey.
Agreed
Hereditary is absolutely in my top 5 favorite movies of all time and I couldn’t agree more about Toni’s performance. There’s just something so compelling about this movie, it’s exceptional.
I love your scoring Dan it’s so wonderfully creative.
This feels like the perfectly balanced metric to grade A24 horror movies on. Top notch stuff!
Hi Dan,
found your channel today by following YT's suggestion to watch this ranking.
This channel is like Sportscenter but for Cinema and I love it.
Love the ranking system Dan. Really well done!
Love watching this! Thanks for this! 🎉🎉
Falling into the black good and yelling “I knew it!” had me dying lol
❤ Under the Skin
I didn't have to watch this to know Dan put Hereditary as number 1. Dan I have been keeping up with you for years(even screen junkies plus-i was a member). Love you dude DAN YOU ARE MOTHER
My review of hereditary is that it was so so frickin good but also traumatic that I’ve never forgotten it and never been able to watch it again. I will forever be searching for its equal
I absolutely disliked "I Saw the TV Glow" after my first watch, but three watches in and I love it.
That points system is so genius and fun. Loved this video! ✌
Thank you for always making such great content! You do amazing work!
My favorite types of Dan videos!
This content is wildly rich and unbelievably put together. I can’t emphasize enough how influential and necessary Dan Murrell is for the movie space. The true heir to the good ol’ ebert and roeper days of the birth of the podcast. Thank you so much for all your effort and dedication to your craft!
I don’t even watch horror movies and I was hooked all through, what a great video, Dan!!
This is an incredibly valuable video for me because I'm not a huge horror fan, I need several reasons to be convinced to watch one. (My partner was surprised I wanted to see Longlegs but it was because of your review Dan!) So now I have a nice short list of new A24 movies to see-thank you! (Also the I AM YOUR MOTHER legit jump scared me)
Thanks for making my Halloween a good one. Being a A24 enjoyer I have some catching up.
Good point about taking a walk, Hereditary put me in the perfect mood to wave at a baby, lol
Great video man, bunch of films to watch: most I've heard of, some I pleasantly haven't heard of!
I can't believe you put In Fabric at 28th!
You're one of those people he alluded to haha. I'd never heard of it till now. It looks legit and I'll have to check it out.
Awesome Video, LOVE the A24 Ranking!
That last bit was some good jump scare if I ever saw one
a superior top 4 ranking! great video, Dan!
I’m so pleasantly surprised that Green Room was up so high! I was starting to think it wouldn’t be on the list. I really loved that movie
Mia Goth's monologue at the end of Pearl is one of the most haunting scenes in film history.
Dan making this list:
I don’t need this menu (other movies) I already know just what I want (Hereditary at #1)
Just FYI, there’s a editing timeline hiccup at the 23:00 mark.
Love the grading/ranking system for A24🎉
I completely agree with the top 3.
